HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Emanuel Lutheran, Grace Episcopal, and First Presbyterian Churches, all of Hutchinson, will jointly host a “Blue Christmas” worship service on December 19, at 7 p.m., at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 140 E 30th Avenue. The event is open to the entire Hutchinson community.

Traditionally occurring on or around the winter solstice, the longest night of the year, a Blue Christmas service is meant to provide hope and healing for those experiencing grief, loss, or other difficult life situations during the holiday season.

“Although we often think of the holidays as a time of joy, celebration, and fellowship with family and friends, for some, the Christmas season means anxiety, stress, and isolation,” said the Reverend Lisa Simmelink, pastor of Emanuel Lutheran. “By working together, our congregations hope to provide a meaningful service for the community and an experience of solace and comfort for those having a hard time.”

The churches hope the joint Blue Christmas service will become an annual event. The location will rotate yearly among the three congregations, with Emanuel Lutheran as the inaugural host.
