AAA

As the summer travel season officially kicks off this Memorial Day weekend, AAA is forecasting a busy stretch on roads and in the skies, both nationwide and in Kansas. According to the latest projections, more than half a million Kansans will join the more than 45 million Americans expected to travel 50 miles or more between May 22 and May 26 — marking one of the busiest Memorial Day travel periods in recent history.

Kansas Travel Snapshot

AAA projects 505,003 Kansans will hit the road or take to the skies this holiday, a 3.2% increase from 2024. The vast majority — 85.9% — will drive to their destinations, totaling 433,708 road trippers, up 2.6% from last year.

One reason for the continued popularity of road trips? Affordable fuel. Kansas currently ranks 10th lowest in the nation for average gas prices, with a gallon of regular unleaded costing $2.86, about 30 cents cheaper than a year ago and significantly below the current national average of $3.17.

Air travel in the state is also expected to rise, though modestly — up 0.8% compared to 2024. Nationally, air travel will see a 1.8% increase, with travelers paying an average of $850 for domestic roundtrip flights, a 2% increase over last year.

National Trends and Travel Modes

Across the U.S., 45.1 million people are expected to travel this Memorial Day, a 3.1% jump from 2024 and a 5.4% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019. Of those, 39.4 million will travel by car — 1.2 million more than last year.

Meanwhile, 2.08 million travelers will choose alternate modes such as buses, cruises, and trains — an 8.5% increase year-over-year. Cruise vacations are especially gaining momentum, with the average cost of a U.S. departure now at $2,065, a 2% rise over 2024.

What to Expect – and Prepare For

In 2024, AAA responded to over 1,600 roadside assistance calls in Kansas alone over Memorial Day weekend. The top three reasons for those calls:

  1. Vehicle breakdowns requiring a tow
  2. Dead batteries
  3. Tire problems

To help avoid these disruptions, AAA recommends motorists have their vehicles inspected before hitting the road, especially given the increased traffic volumes.

Tips from AAA for a Safe Holiday Weekend

  1. Plan ahead: Expect heavy traffic and book accommodations in advance, especially with domestic hotel prices up 8% this year.
  2. Check your vehicle: Battery, tires, and fluid levels should all be inspected before departure.
  3. Pack smart: Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, including water, snacks, jumper cables, and a flashlight.

With travel returning to — and in many ways exceeding — pre-pandemic levels, this year’s Memorial Day holiday is shaping up to be a busy and vibrant start to the summer season.
