Update: Cause of Fire at Kan. alcohol plant under investigation

ATCHISON— Authorities continue working to determine the cause  of an explosion and fire at MGP Ingredients in Atchison.

Just after 8p.m. Friday, crews responded to the fire in the 100 Block of Commercial Street, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson. Firefighters worked on a grain fire for a period of time in the area of the explosion. Traffic was diverted from the immediate area throughout the evening but no residents were evacuated, according to Wilson.  Employees were not injured.

In a statement Saturday, MGP said they are assessing the damage and trying to determine the cause of the fire.

MGP is a supplier of premium distilled spirits and specialty wheat proteins and starches, according to the company web site.

Earlier this year, MGP was fined $1 million for violating the federal Clean Air Act.
