WICHITA, Kan. — A section of Interstate 135 in Wichita has been closed after a train derailment damaged a bridge supporting the highway, according to J.B. Wilson of the Kansas Department of Transportation.

KDOT officials said northbound I-135 is closed just past the ramp connecting northbound I-135 to eastbound K-96, where the bridge crosses a rail yard. The closure comes after the derailment caused structural damage to the bridge.

Bridge inspectors are on site evaluating the extent of the damage. KDOT reported that two support columns beneath the bridge were impacted and compromised, prompting the immediate closure of the roadway.

Crews are working to stabilize the structure while railcars involved in the derailment are being cleared from the area. Officials said a full assessment of the bridge will take place once the site is secured, but no timeline has been announced for reopening the highway.

Traffic is being diverted in the area. Drivers traveling north on I-135 are advised to exit at Hillside Avenue, proceed to the westbound K-96 on-ramp, and then reconnect with northbound I-135 via K-96. Motorists exiting eastbound K-96 can travel south on Hillside Avenue, but those exiting westbound K-96 will not be able to head south, and access to northbound Hillside from K-96 is restricted.

Transportation officials urge drivers to remain alert, follow posted detours and use caution in the work zone. Updated road conditions are available at kandrive.gov or by calling 511.
