
VALLEY CENTER, Kan. - Both Salthawk basketball teams had to overcome adversity and rally back in the Nest versus Valley Center on Tuesday, but both teams came out with hard fought wins. Hutch High Girls overcame 24 turnovers to pull away in the second half 41-30. The Salthawk boys took over in the second half to get the win 60-47.

Tenley Keeton scored all of her points in the first half but it was enough to lead the Salthawks in scoring in a game that saw a 10 point lead at half-time evaporate quickly when the Hornets starting dropping 3 point baskets in the third period. Hutch led 22-12 at half to see that lead go away quickly to let Valley Center take the lead 23-22 before Clara Ontjes hit a corner trey and Lynnea Alverez knocked down two long range bombs to allow the Salthawks to gain control of the tempo and get the win. Alverez and Kaia Smith both added 8 points each in the win.
Hutchinson is now 9-5 on the season and travel to Derby on Friday night while the Hornets are 8-6 and match up with Maize.
Boys recap:
Lamar Govain was fantastic in the third quarter to lead the Salthawks with 20 points scored while Senior guard Terrell King sliced and diced the Hornet defense fo 19 points. Danny Boone came off the bench to ad 9 as the Salthawks pulled away in the second half after trailing by two at the half 26-24.
The Salthawks put up 21 points in the third quarter that saw Hutch overcome a nine point deficit to at one time lead by as may as 17 points in the second half. At one time, Hutch owned a 15 to 0 run to take control of the game.
Hutchinson now plays 4 of their 6 remaining regular season games on the road by traveling to Derby to take on the Panthers on Friday night. Derby is currently ranked #1 in class 6A and is a hard team to beat on their home floor.
