Beulah May (Schmidt) Gehring, 83, of Moundridge, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on December 27, 2021 at Meadowbrook (Pine Village), Moundridge. Beulah was born on February 17, 1938, at Goessel, Kansas to John H. and Susie (Buller) Schmidt.
Beulah graduated from Burns High School in 1956. She married James Leroy Gehring at Burns Mennonite Church on February 24, 1956. They welcomed 4 children into this blessed marriage.
Beulah’s faith was very important to her starting with her baptism in 1953. Beulah was an active member of First Mennonite Church of Christian in Moundridge where she served as Sunday School teacher, sang in the church choir, member of Mission Study Workers/Friendship Circle, Church Council and served on many church committees. She was known to volunteer in the community and was a member of the Bethel College Women’s Association (BCWA).
While the children were little Beulah stayed home and as they grew up, she could be found working as the editor of the Moundridge Journal, working part time at a local fabric and floral shop, Administrative Assistant at Memorial Home and her last position before retirement was the Administrative Assistant to First Mennonite Church in Newton. Her most cherished job was being wife to her husband of 65 years and the mother of her 4 children.
Beulah had many hobbies that filled her time which included quilting, sewing, gardening, baking (oh could she bake, whether it was her amazing cinnamon rolls, poppyseed rolls, cookies or her delicious poppyseed cake that could be found at church and family potlucks) and let’s not forget her infinite love and passion for Indian pottery and artifacts. Beulah and Jim would make many trips to Taos, New Mexico to get her “fix” of the Indian culture during their 65 years together.
Beulah is survived by her husband, James (Jim) Gehring of Moundridge; son, James Jr. (Chrystle) Gehring of Edmond, OK; daughters, Helen (Jim) Schroeder of Moundridge; Bonnie (Charles) Johnson of Merritt Island, FL, Rhonda Schrock of Hesston; 8 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren; sisters, Julie (Leland) Stucky of Newton, Emmy Midkiff of Spokane, WA, twin sister Twylah Nightengale of Burlington, Fern (Ron) Goodwin of Burns, Berneda (Rex) Jewell of Manhattan; brothers, John (Carol) Schmidt of Longmont, CO, Calvin (Dawna) Schmidt of Moundridge, Dennis (Sherry) Schmidt of North Newton; sister-in-law Mary Langenegger, Newton, and many nieces and nephews.
Beulah was preceded in death by both her parents, son-in-law John Schrock, and great granddaughter Abigail Jantz. Brothers-in-law Frank Midkiff, Don Nightengale, Cecil Langenegger; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Joyce and Ken Kyle.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 31, 2021 at First Mennonite Church of Christian, Moundridge. Burial will be prior to the service at 10:00 a.m., at the church cemetery. Friends may pay their respects from 3:00 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, December 30, 2021 at Moundridge Funeral Home with the family greeting friends from 5:30 to 7:30p.m.
