HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It is usually one of the most popular housing programs offered by the South Central Kansas Economic Development District (SCKEDD), but with the pandemic, the agency’s weatherization assistance program has, for the most part, been silent.
The agency hopes to change that with the colder weather setting in. Under the program, income-eligible families receive a comprehensive home energy audit that is an assessment of the entire home. A certified energy auditor assesses each home for inefficiencies and safety concerns using advanced equipment and techniques.
The energy audit will identify areas for cost-effective improvements. Those improvements are then provided free of charge by a network of professional crews and contractors. SCKEDD normally receives $4 million per year, which is enough to do about 480 homes.
Normally, the waiting time for the program is 18 to 24 months, but right now an applicant can expect to be included in the program within 90 days.
If a household contains a member who receives Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits or utility assistance from the Low Income Energy Association Program (LIEAP), the household is automatically considered eligible for the program.
To apply for assistance, contact SCKEDD at 316-262-7035 in Wichita or in Hutchinson at 620-259-6544.
