
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College men suffered its first loss of the season Thursday night, falling 71–68 to Southwestern Christian College (Texas) at the Sports Arena. The Blue Dragons dropped to 3-1, while the Rams improved to 3-0.
The game was tied 31–31 at halftime, but Southwestern Christian outscored Hutchinson 40–37 in the second half and held off a late push by the Blue Dragons.
Kyrell Shaw had a chance to send the game to overtime with a 3-point attempt from half court as time expired, but it missed wide left.
Amir McMilan led Southwestern Christian with 15 points and three assists, while Donny Thomas added 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Ahmere Rose contributed 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds, and Daryl Blanks finished with 10 points and five assists. The Rams shot 38.6% from the field and went 19 of 27 from the free-throw line.
Shaw led Hutchinson with 17 points, going 8 of 9 at the free-throw line. Asher Boney scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Bobby Cannon and Chudier Dorar each added eight. The Blue Dragons shot 41.8% from the floor but were just 5 of 23 (21.7%) from beyond the arc.
Hutchinson held a 37–32 rebounding advantage but committed 14 turnovers and managed only four steals. Southwestern Christian capitalized with 17 assists and 10 steals.
The Blue Dragons return to action Saturday at 7:30 p.m. when they host Lamar (Colo.) at the Sports Arena.
