Newton High Baseball sweeps Salthawks

HUTCHINSON, Kan.—The Hutchinson Salthawks just couldn't get going on offense as Newton came to town and shut out Hutch 9-0 in game one of the double header and then 8-0 in the nightcap.

Game 1 recap-

The Salthawks fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 9-0 loss to Newton on Friday. Newton scored on a single by Andrew Barron and a single by Jake Schmidt in the first inning to take a quick 2-0 lead. The Salthawks struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Newton, giving up nine runs in seven innings. 

A single by Jax Heneha in the fifth inning was the only hit for Hutch. Cade Valdez was the winning pitcher for Newton. Valdez allowed one hit and no runs over seven innings, striking out four. Lakin Franz took the loss for Hutchinson Salthawks Varsity. Franz went four and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on six hits and striking out five. Heneha went 1-for-3 at the plate to lead Hutchinson Salthawks Varsity in hits. Newton racked up 13 hits. Barron, Schmidt, Justin Zerger, Luke Hirsh, and Colby Gomez each managed multiple hits for Newton. Barron led Newton with three hits in five at bats.

Game 2 recap-

Hutch had trouble scoring again in game 2 losing to  Newton in an 8-0 loss.

One bright spot for Hutchinson Salthawks Varsity was a single by Lakin Franz in the second inning. Franz punched the ball into right field for a solid single.

Jason Slechta pitched Newton to victory. Slechta allowed two hits and zero runs over seven innings, striking out eight and walking one.

Kinser Newquist took the loss for Hutchinson Salthawks. Newquist lasted three and a third innings, allowing four hits and six runs while striking out two.

Franz and Maliki Miller each collected one hit to lead the Salthawks. Newton racked up eight hits in the game. Colby Gomez and Ryan Ruggiero all had multiple hits for Newton.

A bright spot for Hutchinson was freshman Jack Davis coming in to pitch in relief for Newquist threw one pitch to strike out top of the order batter Luke Hirsh.  Then promptly struck out the next batter he faced to retire the side.  Davis pitched two and two thirds innings and registered three strikeouts.

Next action for the Salthawks is next Tuesday in Goddard as they finish game 1 of a double header that was suspended in the 4th inning from opening day March 29th in Goddard.  Hutch trailed 7-1 in the 4th inning.
