HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As winter weather approaches, the Public Works Department is prepared to respond to a variety of conditions to keep Hutchinson safe.
Here’s how we tackle Condition II Storms—rain turning into ice (up to ½ inch thick), which typically occurs 1-3 times per year.
What’s treated? A full salt pattern is applied to major streets to prevent ice buildup and improve driving conditions.
How do we treat it? Our team will deploy a crew of 8 salt spreaders and 1 snow boss to monitor and treat the streets. We may need to repeat the salt application to keep roads safe.
What else happens? In the event of downed trees or power lines, additional Public Works staff will be assigned to assist with traffic control and debris removal.
This type of storm can create hazardous driving conditions, so please stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel if possible. Our crews will work around the clock to ensure the streets are safe for all.
