⚾ Hutch High swept at Maize in season finale

MAIZE, Kan. — Maize closed Hutchinson’s baseball season Friday with a doubleheader sweep, beating the Salthawks 14-0 and 12-2.

Hutchinson ended the season 4-22 and will not advance to postseason play. Maize, which entered the doubleheader 19-2, improved to 21-2 and will continue its regular season Monday against Kapaun Mt. Carmel.

The Eagles took control early in Game 1, scoring six runs in the first inning and adding two runs in the second, two in the third and four in the fourth.

Maize finished with 12 hits and played error-free defense, while Hutchinson committed five errors. Drake Blasi, Scotty Hadley and Parker Meirowsky each tripled in the first inning as the Eagles quickly built a 6-0 lead.

Hadley went 3 for 4 with a double, triple, three runs and three RBIs. Meirowsky was 2 for 3 with a double, triple, two runs and two RBIs. Gavin Short added a hit, two runs and three RBIs.

Porter Newell earned the win for Maize, throwing three hitless innings with four strikeouts. Austin Epp finished the combined no-hitter with two hitless innings and three strikeouts.

Payne Young took the loss for Hutchinson.

Hutchinson had a stronger offensive start in Game 2, collecting two hits in the first inning from Brodie McCuan and JuJu Lyons, but the Salthawks were unable to score.

Maize scored once in the first and broke the game open with six runs in the second inning. Porter Newell had the big hit in the inning with a two-run triple, helping the Eagles build a 7-0 lead.

Hutchinson got on the board in the fourth when Landon Haugsness scored on an Eli Atha fielder’s choice. The Salthawks added another run in the fifth when Haugsness singled to score Lyons, cutting the deficit to 8-2.

Maize ended the game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Brodie Jarvis hit an inside-the-park home run, and Kolby Dornbusch later reached on an error that brought in the final two runs.

Haugsness led Hutchinson in Game 2, going 1 for 2 with a run, an RBI, a walk and a stolen base. McCuan and Lyons each had two hits, while Eli Parks added a hit.

Cooper Shaw earned the win for Maize, allowing one run on four hits in four innings. Carson Roth pitched the fifth inning.

Gabe Valadez took the loss for Hutchinson, allowing eight runs, four earned, on seven hits in four innings.
