HUTCHINSON, Kan. — No. 2 Hutchinson Community College opened the 2026 season in dominant fashion Thursday night, scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter and rolling past Cisco College 59-7 at Gowans Stadium.
The victory gave the Blue Dragons their fifth consecutive season-opening win and improved Hutchinson to 1-0.
“Just pleased with our guys’ effort,” Hutchinson head coach Drew Dallas said. “I thought they played efficient, especially really early on, offense, defense, each side of the football. ... For 16 practices, pleased with where we’re at. But we’ve got to continue to get better and clean up some things.”
Hutchinson piled up 552 yards of total offense while limiting Cisco to 116. The Blue Dragons finished with 312 yards passing and 240 rushing and scored touchdowns with all three quarterbacks who saw action.
JB Price opened the scoring with a 45-yard touchdown run less than three minutes into the game. Randy Phillips added a 6-yard touchdown run before Price scored again from 4 yards out to give Hutchinson a 21-0 lead with 3:36 remaining in the first quarter.Price finished with 72 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries.
Rashaud Hurt pushed the lead to 28-0 with a 1-yard touchdown early in the second quarter before Cisco answered with its only score of the night, a 72-yard touchdown run by Randall Jackson.
Phillips then connected with Bobby Shaw III for an 8-yard touchdown and Nakai Poole for a 17-yard score in the final three minutes of the half, sending Hutchinson to the locker room with a 42-7 advantage.Phillips completed 14 of 21 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns without an interception while also rushing for a score.
“I thought all three of those guys did some good things,” Dallas said of Phillips, Bravin Powell and Jace Jefferson. “Again, just efficiency, not forcing things. Took some vertical shots when we had the chance. ... I thought we were balanced. We ran the ball efficiently. We threw it well.”
Powell completed 5 of 10 passes for 85 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown to Shaw in the third quarter. Jefferson completed all four of his attempts for 48 yards and threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Rayvelle Leak in the fourth.
“It was fun to get all three of those guys reps and get them game situations,” Dallas said. “Even though they were around, they hadn’t played. ... Very pleased with what they did.”
Shaw led Hutchinson with six receptions for 108 yards and two touchdowns, while Jeremiah Looney added six catches for 88 yards. Ten Blue Dragons caught at least one pass.
Parker Grizzell made a 45-yard field goal in the third quarter and converted all eight extra-point attempts.
Hutchinson’s defense was equally dominant, allowing just six first downs and 53 rushing yards. The Blue Dragons recorded five sacks for 53 yards in losses and held Cisco to 1 of 13 on third-down conversions.
Cisco’s 72-yard touchdown run accounted for more than 60% of its total offense.
“They flew around,” Dallas said. “I thought we tackled well for the first game for the most part. ... You look at some of those critical areas — one of 13 on third-down conversions. I mean, that’s a big-time number.”
Kameron Graham recorded two sacks for 22 yards, while Kyrece Robinson, Temerrick Johnson and Jason Wilson also registered sacks. Wilson forced a fourth-quarter fumble that LaDarius Jemes recovered at the Cisco 20.
Hutchinson finished with 29 first downs, averaged 7.1 yards per play and possessed the ball for 35 minutes, 14 seconds.
Despite the lopsided result, Dallas said the opener will provide the coaching staff with plenty to evaluate heading into Week 2.
“Live bullets is the best way to evaluate where you’re at and then start to make adjustments,” Dallas said. “We’ve got to learn the personality of who we are and what we’re good at offensively, defensively, special teams. Clean those areas up and make a big improvement from Game One to Game Two.”
The Blue Dragons will play their first road game of the season Aug. 29 at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa.
