Hutchinson Community College freshman runner Mildred Rono was named the Jayhawk Conference's Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week for the third time this season on Tuesday.
Rono broke the Blue Dragon Women's Cross Country 5K record for this second time this season after a second-place finish at the Fort Hays State Tiger Open on Saturday in Hays.
The Blue Dragon freshman from Eldoret, Kenya, posted a time at the Tiger Open of 15:41.1. She just missed her third race victory of the season by 1.1 seconds and beat her own school record by 8.1 seconds.
Rono was the conference women's cross country runner-up after winning the Terry Masterson Twilight on August 30 and the Missouri Southern Stampede on September 20. Next up for Rono and the No. 11-ranked Blue Dragons is the Region 6 Championships on October 24 in Colby.
Rono matches a program record of earning KJCCC Runner of the Week awards with Faith Jepchirchir, who won three weekly awards in the 2024 season. Rono was also the NJCAA and USTFCCCA National Runner of the Week after winning the Missouri Southern Stampede.
