Bicycle boulevard island is in; intersection work to finish this week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The work continues on the Washington Street Bicycle Boulevard from 17th to 27th. The island in the middle of 17th to allow bicycles to cross safely has been poured.

Northbound Washington traffic will be forced to turn east and southbound will have to turn west. Travelers on 17th Avenue will also no longer be able to make a left turn off of 17th onto Washington Street.

The grant to do this work was approved in 2017. The city's matching on the project was $105,000.

According to the 2016 Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan, candidate streets for bicycle boulevards are typically low volume and low speed streets that have the potential for high bicycle ridership because of proximity to many destinations or adjacency to a corridor with high vehicular traffic volumes or speed.

The intent is to move the bicycle traffic off of Adams and Main onto Washington through that stretch.

The work at that intersection is scheduled through Friday, June 24 and then will move north where a section of storm sewer on Washington between 18th and 19th has to be fixed before the road can be rebuilt.
