Max L. Smith, 89, of Wichita and Moundridge, Kansas, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2024 at the Park West Plaza in Wichita. He was born on October 15, 1934 in Halstead, Kansas, to Calvin L. and Mildred V. (White) Smith.
He graduated from Moundridge High School with the class of 1952. Max later attained his bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1967 from Friends University in Wichita. Max and his wife, Norma, were major supporters of Friends University.
He worked as a tax auditor for the Kansas Department of Revenue for over 40 years, retiring in 1998.
In 1946, Max was baptized at the First Christian Church of Burrton. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Moundridge.
Max was united in marriage to Norma Jean Kaufman on January 24, 1955 in Pocatello, Idaho. She preceded him in death on November 25, 2006. They shared 51 years of marriage.
He is survived by his brother, Fred (Glenda) Smith of Wichita; sisters-in-law, Janet Smith of Wichita, and Delonna Barnett of Moundridge; brother-in-law, Wendell D. Kaufman of Moundridge; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and friends.
Max was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Gregory Allen Smith; brother, Robert “Bob” Smith; sister, Aletha Gay Dugan; sister-in-law, Hattie Smith; and brothers-in-law, Bob Barnett and Melvin Dugan.
