Strataca, the popular underground salt museum in Reno County, is temporarily closed as a safety precaution following a maintenance concern identified Friday.

According to social media release from Strataca, the facility was evacuated using its designated evacuation hoist to ensure the safe and efficient return of all guests and staff to the surface. No injuries were reported.

“Safety is and always will be our top priority,” the statement said. “We are committed to operating only when all equipment is functioning at 100%, without exception.”

The museum initially hoped to remain open over the weekend but ultimately made the decision to shut down temporarily “out of an abundance of caution.” The closure will extend through Sunday, Aug. 3, while staff conduct a thorough review and resolve maintenance issues.

“We deeply appreciate the support, patience, and kind messages we’ve received from our community and visitors,” Strataca officials said.

Guests are encouraged to follow Strataca’s social media pages for updates on reopening plans.

Strataca, located 650 feet below the Kansas prairie, offers a unique look into the region’s mining history and geology. It draws thousands of visitors each year.

For now, museum leaders say the focus is solely on ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience once doors reopen.
