SEATTLE (AP) — Geno Smith threw two first-half touchdown passes, Denver fumbled twice at the 1-yard line in the second half, and the Seahawks beat the Broncos 17-16 in Russell Wilson’s return to Seattle. Brandon McManus missed a 64-yard field goal attempt with 20 seconds left and the Seahawks escaped with another wild victory involving Wilson at quarterback. Except this time Wilson was the opponent and there will be plenty of questions about Denver coach Nathaniel Hackett’s late-game clock management and decisions in his first game. Denver faced fourth-and-5 at the Seattle 46 and had three timeouts left, but the Broncos ran significant time off the clock before Hackett called timeout and decided to have McManus try the long field goal.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Just about the only negatives for the Chiefs in their 44-21 win Sunday in Arizona came from the trainer’s tent. Patrick Mahomes threw for 360 yards and five touchdowns without an interception, and his rebuilt wide receiver group hardly missed Tyreek Hill. The running game got humming, tight end Travis Kelce proved once more that he is an ageless wonder, and a younger and speedier defense held the Cardinals to one score until midway through the fourth quarter. But a bevy of injuries, including one to kicker Harrison Butker, could cause the Chiefs problems with a short week ahead. They play the Chargers in the first of the NFL's exclusive Thursday night games on Amazon Prime.
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Carson Wentz made clutch throws to erase big mistakes and pull out a victory that eluded Baker Mayfield and Joe Flacco. Russell Wilson is up next in the NFL’s Week 1 revenge tour. Wilson returns to Seattle on Monday night to play his first game for the Denver Broncos. Mayfield came up short Sunday against the Browns. Flacco had no chance against the Ravens. Wentz didn’t face his former team - he’ll play against the Eagles in two weeks and the Colts next month - but his first game for the Washington Commanders came against Doug Pederson, the coach who drafted and developed him into an MVP candidate by his second season before both were quickly run out of Philadelphia.
FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Cooper Rush is filling in for an injured Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott for the second year in a row. This time the challenge will be much tougher for the sixth-year player. Prescott is out multiple weeks with a fracture near the thumb of his right hand. Rush won a game last season when Prescott had a calf strain. The victory helped keep the Cowboys on track for the NFC East title. Rush will have to do much more than that to keep Dallas in contention this time.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Former Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid has pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated resulting in serious physical injury after his truck hit two parked cars in 2021 and left a young girl with a traumatic brain injury. Reid entered his plea Monday. The son of Chiefs coach Andy Reid was scheduled to go on trial on Sept. 26. Prosecutors allege Britt Reid was intoxicated and speeding when he hit two stopped cars on an interstate exit ramp near Arrowhead Stadium in February 2021. Six people were injured, including Reid. Five-year-old Ariel Young suffered a traumatic brain injury. The plea deal means Reid faces a possible sentence of up to four years in prison, although he could be placed on probation.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — The early part of the 2022 schedule was supposed to be West Virginia’s best opportunity at putting together only the second winning football season under fourth-year coach Neal Brown. Instead, fans are in an uproar over the Mountaineers’ first 0-2 start since 1979. Many are pleading for a coaching change. Saturday's overtime loss to Kansas dropped Brown's record to 17-20. Athletic director Shane Lyons says he is as disappointed as the fans and that on-field results have not met expectations. Lyons is willing to see how the season plays out, saying there are 10 games left and the focus is still on getting positive results.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner is expected to miss the rest of the regular season with an injury to his nonthrowing shoulder that will need surgery. Fighting Irish coach Marcus Freeman says Buchner has a severe AC joint sprain in his left shoulder. Buchner was injured in the fourth quarter of Notre Dame’s surprising loss to Marshall on Saturday. Drew Pyne, who came off the bench after Buchner was hurt, was listed as the starter on Notre Dame’s depth chart of Saturday’s home game against California.
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Defending national champion Georgia needed only two games to convince voters it should return to the top of the AP Top 25. Coach Kirby Smart says September rankings are “never a big deal.” He says the poll only matters at the end of the season. The Bulldogs are winning with defense. They play at South Carolina on Saturday in their Southeastern Conference opener. Georgia was No. 3 in the preseason AP Top 25 and moved to No. 2 following its 49-3 rout of then-No. 11 Oregon to open the season. The Bulldogs then climbed to No. 1 in this week’s poll after Alabama barely escaped with a one-point victory at Texas and fell to No. 2.
