A sweet tradition with a meaningful mission returns to Hutchinson this Thursday as the Salvation Army hosts its annual Donut Day eating contest during the community’s Third Thursday festivities.
The contest, which kicks off at 6 p.m. in the parking lot of Hutch Auto Body — near the corner of Avenue A and Walnut Street — will feature roughly 20 contestants, including several high school students from Buhler. Participants will compete in a timed donut-eating showdown, with prizes awarded across three categories.

The event, now in its third year in Hutchinson, celebrates National Donut Day — traditionally held the first Friday in June — a nod to the "Donut Lassies" of World War I and II, women who volunteered to serve donuts to soldiers on the front lines. For organizer and Salvation Army representative Maj. Paul James, the event also holds a personal connection.
“My wife’s great-grandmother was one of those women,” he said. “She volunteered at the age of 16. This is a way for us to honor that legacy.”
In partnership with Third Thursday and longtime sponsors Daylight Donuts and Hutch Auto Body, this year marks the first time the contest is incorporated into the larger downtown event. Free donuts will be handed out at 6 p.m., while supplies last.
Three Ways to Win
Contestants will vie for three titles:
- Donut Champion: Awarded to the person who eats the most glazed donuts in five minutes.
- People’s Choice: Given to the contestant or team that raises the most online donations before the event.
- Raising the Most Dough: Goes to the contestant or team that collects the most cash donations during the event.
Spectators are encouraged to cheer on their favorite eaters and support them by donating in-person or online. Links to the donation portal can be found on the Salvation Army Hutchinson Facebook page.
“We need people to come out and witness this spectacle,” said Maj. James. “And if you’re thinking you want to join in, there’s still time. We can always make room for one more.”
Funds with a Purpose
All proceeds will support local and global Salvation Army programs. Half of the money raised will fund summer camps for area youth, offering experiences such as sports, music, and teen leadership development near Kansas City.
“These camps are $10 per child — and that covers four to five days,” Maj. James said. “We transport them, feed them, and give them an experience they wouldn’t otherwise have.”
The other half of the proceeds will benefit the Salvation Army’s international efforts, including hospitals, schools, and orphanages in countries where such services are limited.
How to Give
Those unable to attend can still contribute. Donations can be mailed or dropped off at the Salvation Army office, 700 N. Walnut St., behind Wendy’s in Hutchinson. For more information on how to donate, call 620-663-3353.
“We’re excited to bring this event to Third Thursday and share the fun,” Maj. James said. “But at the heart of it, it’s about honoring service — past and present — and helping others through donuts.”
