🏀 Blue Dragons defeat Saints, Ontjes picks up win No. 500

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team overcame a slow start in route to a 52-40 win over Seward County Community College on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons improved their record to 17-0 overall, 11-0 in the Jayhawk Conference. HutchCC extended its win streak to 54 games, 38 straight against KJCCC schools. 

The win also marked the 500th career head coaching victory for John Ontjes, who is in his 18th season. Ontjes now holds a 500-96 overall record.

Hutchinson didn't score it's first points until the 4:11 mark in the first quarter, already trailing 4-0 at that moment. The Blue Dragons held a slim 7-6 lead after the first quarter, the lowest scoring first period by HutchCC this season.

The Blue Dragons led 21-16 at halftime and then 38-29 after three quarters. Hutchinson extended the lead to 16 in the fourth quarter, their largest lead of the night.

Hailey Jackson finished with a team-high 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Blue Dragons, while Madi Denison and Jada Pleasant each had 10 points. 

Ari Gordon led Seward County with 15 points, the only Saints player in double-figure scoring.

Hutchinson (17-0, 11-0) will travel to No. 3 Dodge City (15-2, 10-1) on Saturday. The game will tipoff at 1 p.m. inside the Student Activity Center. The game will be broadcasted on KHUT-FM (102.9), the flagship station for Blue Dragon athletics with pregame coverage starting at 12:45 p.m. with Sean Boston (play-by-play) and Daren Dunn (analyst).

Seward County (11-6, 6-5) will travel to Garden City on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tipoff from Conestoga Arena.
