Waneta Fern Schrag Showalter, 96, passed away July 23, 2022, at Paramount Community Living and Rehab, Newton. She was born July 31, 1925, in Hesston, to Roy Calvin and Rosa Ann (Landis) Hackenberg.
Waneta was a 1943 graduate of Halstead High School, Halstead. She was also a graduate of Adela Hale Business College, Hutchinson. Waneta was employed as a tax clerk in the Reno County Treasurer’s Office, retiring with many years of service. She attended the Burrton Mennonite Church, Burrton.
Waneta was a farm wife in her early years and enjoyed raising chickens and taking care of her flower garden. She was a member of the Hutchinson Sweet Adelines.
On November 6, 1943, Waneta married Willard N. Schrag. He passed away in 1979. Waneta then married Wayne Showalter on February 8, 1986. He passed away in 1996.
She is survived by: her daughters, Rita Franz of Newton, and Joyce Schnabel of Hutchinson; twelve grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Susie Schrag of Inman; sisters-in-law, Marlene Barton of Hutchinson, and Marilyn Schrag of Burrton; brother-in-law, Clifford Dick of Hutchinson; and special friend, Marcella Becker.
Waneta was preceded in death by: her parents; husbands, Willard N. Schrag and Wayne Showalter; and sons, John Schrag, Bill Schrag, and Steven Schrag.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 29, 2022, at the Burrton Cemetery, S Colorado, Burrton, with the Reverend Todd Ray officiating. The casket will remain closed. Friends may go to the Elliott Mortuary website and sign the online guestbook.
