DRAGONS DROP 5-SET HEARTBREAKER AT BUTLER

EL DORADO – Twice down one set on Saturday at Butler, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team battled back to force a fifth set, but the Grizzlies outlasted the Blue Dragons in the 2025 regular-season finale at the Power Plant.

The Blue Dragons’ rally fell just short in a 24-26, 25-21, 16-25, 25-18, 16-18 KJCCC loss.

The Dragons close the regular season at 14-17 and tied Seward County for sixth in the KJCCC with 6-10 record. Official Region 6 Tournament pairings will be released on Monday.

After dropping the first set, the Blue Dragons hit .341 in the second set to win and tie the match at 1-1. Alondra Villanueva had four kills and Mattie Galliher added three kills to lead the Dragons. Then the Blue Dragons fell off offensively and hit only .120 to drop the third set.

Hutchinson rebounded with a strong fourth set, hitting .378 on 14 kills as the Dragons rolled in the fourth with five kills from Villanueva, four kills from Nathalia Ferreira and three kills from Jaylynn McNeill.

After five changes and six ties, Butler had match point at 15-14. Ferreira tied the set at 15 with a kill and then the Blue Dragons had a match point at 16-15 after a Grizzly attack error.

The Dragons thought they had won the match on another Grizzly attack error, but there was a replay overrule on a block touch by the Dragons and the set was tied at 16. Butler scored the final two points to win the match.

Villanueva led the Blue Dragons with her 14th double-double of the season with 16 kills and 23 digs. Villanueva hit .143 on 43 attacks. She added three block assists.

Galliher hit .474 with nine kills on 19 attacks. McNeill and Atlyn Proctor had seven kills each. Ferreira had six kills and Kierny Follmer added five kills.

The Blue Dragons hit .178 for the match with eight team blocks, 95 digs and five aces.

Setter Angela Reupena had her sixth double-double with 51 assists and 15 digs with two kills, two aces and three block assists.

Libero Clara Oliveira had 29 digs and defensive specialist McKenzye Williamson had 11 digs.
