With temperatures soaring across the region, local organizations are stepping up to protect some of the city’s most vulnerable residents. “Beat the Heat 2025” is set for Wednesday, July 23, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Salvation Army, 700 N. Walnut.

The free event is designed to support Hutchinson’s unhoused community with essential services and supplies to stay safe during extreme summer heat. Offerings include showers from 9 to 11 a.m., a free lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and take-home items such as water, supply packs, first aid kits, and hygiene products.

In addition, the event will feature on-site haircuts, STI and STD testing, and access to free Naloxone and fentanyl test strips—tools that can help prevent fatal overdoses.

Organized by Unhoused Conversation and a coalition of local partners, “Beat the Heat 2025” aims to foster care, connection, and safety at a time when heat-related illnesses pose a serious risk to those without shelter.

Organizers say the event is about more than just supplies—it’s about dignity, compassion, and ensuring no one is left behind in the summer heat.
