⚾ Dechant strikes out 16 in Trinity Catholic quarterfinal win

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Drew Dechant struck out 16 and allowed one hit Thursday, helping No. 3 Hutchinson-Trinity Catholic beat No. 14 Sedgwick 3-1 in a Class 2-1A baseball regional quarterfinal at Rice Park.

Dechant went 6 2/3 innings, allowing one run, one hit and three walks. Sam Vogel got the final out for the Celtics.

Sedgwick took a 1-0 lead in the third inning after Rylan Howell doubled and later scored on a wild pitch.

Trinity Catholic answered in the bottom half of the inning. Kaid McElgunn singled and stole second before Vogel hit an RBI triple to center field to tie the game. Dechant followed with a sacrifice fly to score Vogel and give the Celtics a 2-1 lead.

The Celtics added an insurance run in the sixth. Lucas Griffith singled, stole second and third, and scored on Garrett Griffith’s RBI single.

Trinity Catholic finished with seven hits. Vogel went 1 for 3 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored. Dechant went 1 for 2 with an RBI, Garrett Griffith went 1 for 3 with an RBI, and McElgunn, Lucas Griffith, Gavin Scott and Bryan Maya each had a hit.

Alex Stout took the loss for Sedgwick, allowing three runs on seven hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks in six innings.

Trinity Catholic improved to 18-3 and will play No. 6 Stanton County at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Spearville. Stanton County, now 14-8, beat No. 11 Plainville 8-4 on Thursday. Sedgwick ended its season 6-19.
