KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs have locked up a key piece of their offensive line, signing right guard Trey Smith to a four-year, $94 million contract extension just ahead of Tuesday’s 3 p.m. CT deadline for franchise-tagged players to reach long-term deals.

Smith, 26, had been franchise-tagged by the team in March. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the new deal includes $70 million in guaranteed money, making him the highest-paid guard in the NFL. Alongside center Creed Humphrey, the Chiefs now feature the league’s top-paid interior offensive line duo.

A sixth-round pick out of Tennessee in 2021, Smith slid in the draft due to medical concerns but quickly became a mainstay in Kansas City. He’s started 67 games over the past four seasons, earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2024, and helped anchor the offensive front for two Super Bowl-winning teams.

Smith played on a rookie deal worth $6.5 million over four years. Had he played on the franchise tag in 2025, he would have made a record $23.4 million for a guard.
