Edward Wayne “Ed” Waggoner |1945-2022|

Edward Wayne “Ed” Waggoner, 76, of Lyons, Kansas, passed away March 4, 2022 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson. He was born June 19, 1945, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Clarence Wayne and Lena Margaret “Midge” (Rick) Waggoner.

He graduated from Lyons High School with the class of 1963 and was a lifelong Lyons resident. On June 7, 1974, Ed was united in marriage with Leona Pearl Cook in Lyons. She preceded him in death on October 2, 2018. He is also preceded in death by his parents. Ed completed heavy equipment operator school in Texas. He was initially employed as an equipment operator doing dirt construction for various private contractors, followed by Farmers Coop, and eventually at American Salt Company which transitioned to Lyons Salt Company where he worked for 31 years, until his retirement in 2009. Ed was a farmer/rancher, who enjoyed raising cattle and breeding Quarter Horses. He bred and registered over 135 foals and was especially proud of his stallion “Mr. Shawnabug” who sired numerous circuit champions, American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) World Show Qualifiers and “good minded horses”. He shared his passion for livestock, cattle and horses with his children and his granddaughters. His greatest joy was spending time with his granddaughters whether it was a quick visit, attending school programs or sporting events, and never missed a 4-H fair or a local horse show if his granddaughters were showing. Ed most recently attended Faith Bible Church in Lyons, was a member of the United Steel Workers of America Union (#12458) and a lifelong member of the American Quarter Horse Association.

He is survived by his three children; Justin Waggoner and wife Stephanie (Sutton) of Garden City, and their children Madelyn and Cassidy; Becky Caywood and husband Todd of Maple Hill, and their child, Elise; Christopher Waggoner and fiancé Liz Crawford of Lyons, and his child Kaitlyn; brother, Donald Waggoner and wife Julia of Lyons; sister, Linda Barker and fiancé Tom Davis of Lyons.

Funeral service will be at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, March 12, 2022, at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons with Dennis Corbett officiating. Burial will follow at Lyons Municipal Cemetery, Lyons. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 7:00 P.M., Friday, March 11, 2022, at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons, with family present from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M.
