Posted Dec 15, 2024 2:40 AM

CONCORDIA, Kan. — Hutchinson (8-5, 4-3) won for the first time this season after trailing at the break.

The Dragons were 0-2 when trailing at halftime before erasing a 16-point deficit Saturday afternoon.

Hutchinson, the No. 1 three-point shooting team in the Jayhawk Conference, was an ice-cold 1-of-12 from distance in the first half.

Cloud County (9-5, 3-5) hit 5-of-13 triples and took a 40-26 advantage into the locker room.

The Dragons then caught fire from distance and knocked down 7-of-12 treys in the second half.

Back-to-back threes, one from Quez Thornton and the other from Khalil Arnold, tied the game at 55 with less than 10 minutes to play.

Thornton scored 21 of his game-high 27 points in the second half.

Arnold scored 11 of his total 18 points in the second frame.

Hutchinson took the lead for good on an Isaiah Jackson layup with seven minutes to play.

Jackson finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds, his second double-double of the year.

Mikhail Abdul-Hamid hit a clutch three with 1:50 to play to put Hutchinson up six. The sharp-shooting redshirt sophomore has been in a shooting slump lately (3-of-16).

Keyon Garrett-Miller's three with 20.7 seconds to play kept things interesting to the final horn, but Hutchinson made just enough free throws (2-of-4) in the final seconds to keep the Thunderbirds grounded.

FINAL: Hutchinson 77 Cloud County 73

Hutchinson shot 56.7% in the second half after shooting just 28.6% in the first 20 minutes.

The Dragons return to action Jan. 4 in the Sports Arena and face Cowley in a 4 p.m. matchup.
