PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — Haley Austin, a Pretty Prairie High School graduate from the class of 2019, is a Kansas Horizon Award nominee for secondary education, nominated for her work at Haysville. After graduating from Pretty Prairie, Austin attended and graduated from Hutchinson Community College and Wichita State University.

“I am absolutely honored to receive this nomination,” Austin said. “I appreciate that others see how passionate I am about teaching. I believe growth is evident in everyone, and I want children to do their best in all aspects of their lives. My students are the future, and we need to invest in their education.”

Austin’s nomination was announced on Haysville Public Schools’ Facebook page on Monday, Oct. 7. Austin is a middle school science teacher at Haysville Middle School in Haysville, Kansas. She was chosen as the secondary nomination for the award in her district.

The Kansas Horizon Award Program is sponsored by the Kansas Department of Education (KSDE). The purpose of the award is to identify novice teachers (first and second year teachers) who show an excellence in teaching amongst other novice teachers. Two nominees are chosen from each district, one elementary teacher, and one secondary teacher. Nominees are selected by the school district superintendent and building principal.
