Daniel Velasquez Vieyra |1928-2021|

Daniel Velasquez Vieyra, 93, passed away May 21, 2021, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born April 10, 1928, in Hutchinson, to Luis Chavando and Bibiana (Velasquez) Vieyra.

Daniel attended Hutchinson High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II from 1946 to 1948 and during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. Daniel was a Golden Gloves boxing champion and boxed on the team while serving in the Army. He was a correctional officer at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility (formerly Kansas State Industrial Reformatory), retiring with over 20 years of service.

Daniel enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, pull tabs, and watching sports on television. If the Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Chiefs, University of Kansas basketball, or wrestling was on, he could be found parked in front of the television. Daniel was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68, and Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.

On May 19, 1956, he married Sara Razo, in Hutchinson. They shared over 64 years of marriage, prior to her death on October 22, 2020.

Daniel is survived by: children, Anthony Vieyra, Melinda (Richard) Aleman, Alex Vieyra, and Vince Vieyra, all of Hutchinson; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter on the way.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; wife, Sara Vieyra; daughter, Melissa Vieyra; sister, Nellie Garcia; and brothers, Jesus, Bacilio, Jesus ‘Chickie’, Pete, Frank, Rojelio, Trunkalino, and Charlie.

Parish Rosary will be 7 p.m. Monday, May 31, 2021, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 612 S. Maple, South Hutchinson, with Father Charles Seiwert officiating. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at the church, with Father Todd Shepherd officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park. Military honors will be conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 28, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 29, and from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 30, at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Daniel V. Vieyra Memorial Fund, in care of Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
