TOPEKA —On Sunday, Kansas implemented the 'Axe the Food Tax’ legislation passed during the 2022 legislative session changing the state sales tax rate on groceries from 6.5% to 4.0%.
Current legislation will completely eliminate the state’s sales tax on groceries by 2025. Local tax rates still apply. However, Governor Kelly has renewed her call for the legislature to pass a bill that immediately eliminates the state sales tax on groceries.
On December 19, Kelly released a new three-part ‘Axing Your Taxes’ plan to save Kansans more than $500 million over the next three years, according to a statement from her office.
The comprehensive plan includes a push to immediately ‘axe the tax’ on groceries and eliminate the state sales tax on diapers and feminine hygiene products.
The plan would also create an annual state sales tax holiday for school supplies; and cut taxes on social security for retirees.
