🏀 WBB: No. 1 Blue Dragons hit 14 3-pointers in blowout win

GOODLAND, Kan. — The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team passed its first road test of the week with flying colors, dominating Northwest Tech on Wednesday, 91-52.

Hutchinson is now 26-0 overall, 20-0 in Jayhawk Conference play. The Blue Dragons still hold a 3.5 game lead on Dodge City in the conference standings with four games remaining.

The win also matches the third-best start and tie for the fourth-longest win streak in program history. The Blue Dragons tie the 1976-77 team that started the season 26-0.

The Blue Dragons knocked down a season-high 14 made 3-pointers and dished off a season-high 29 assists in the win.

HutchCC led 25-7 after the first quarter before outscoring the Mavericks in the second quarter, 31-7, to build a 56-19 lead at halftime. The Blue Dragons knocked down seven of 10 3-point tries in the second quarter to help grow the lead.

Kiki Smith led the Blue Dragons in scoring with 15 points in a team-high 23 minutes played. Monae Duffy added 13, as did Kahlen Norris, who set a new career-high in doing so. Akaysha Muggeridge added 12 points and six assists. Madi Denison finished with six points and a career-high 15 rebounds.

The Blue Dragons saw all 11 players on the roster contribute with at least two points each. 

Northwest Tech (2-22, 1-19) was led in scoring by Tyjhanae Penny with a career-high 20 points. Traysha Newsome also finished in double figures with 10 points. 

Hutchinson will travel to Liberal on Saturday to face Seward County. The Blue Dragons and the Saints will tip off at 4 p.m. Northwest Tech will make their shortest trip of the season to Colby.
