HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As Independence Day approaches, the City of Hutchinson and the Hutchinson Fire Department are reminding residents to follow local fireworks regulations designed to keep the holiday safe and reduce the risk of fires and injuries.

According to the city's fireworks safety guide, retail fireworks stands are permitted to sell fireworks from June 26 through July 7.

However, residents may only discharge fireworks from June 30 through July 4, and only between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. each day.

Fireworks are permitted only on private property. Anyone wishing to use fireworks on public property or as part of a special event must first obtain a City special use permit.

The city also emphasized several important restrictions. Bottle rockets are illegal within Hutchinson, as are sky lanterns and aerial luminaries. Residents are prohibited from setting off fireworks outside the authorized dates and hours, and fireworks cannot be used on any day a fire code official declares conditions unsafe because of fire danger.

City officials also outlined who may be held responsible for violations. Adults are prohibited from allowing anyone under the age of 18 to violate the city's fireworks rules, and failing to supervise a minor who breaks the law may be treated as allowing the violation. The city defines an adult as anyone 18 years of age or older.

Property owners, renters, lessees and anyone in control of a property may also be held responsible for illegal fireworks activity occurring on their property or in a nearby public right-of-way. Fireworks debris or remnants found on a property may be used as evidence of illegal use.

The city encourages residents to celebrate responsibly by following all local regulations, using fireworks safely and helping prevent fires during the Independence Day holiday.

The fireworks regulations apply only within the Hutchinson city limits. Residents living outside the city should check with their local jurisdiction for applicable fireworks laws and restrictions.
