
MDS Coordinator
Salary Range: $32.75 – $40.00 per hour
Schedule: Full-Time | Day Shift
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly)
Reports To: Director of Nursing
Position Summary
The MDS Coordinator is a Registered Nurse responsible for coordinating and completing the Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) process in compliance with state and federal regulations. This role oversees the implementation and ongoing evaluation of each resident’s comprehensive plan of care while serving as a key clinical and regulatory resource for the interdisciplinary team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate the facility’s RAI process in accordance with state and federal regulations.
- Complete all MDS assessments accurately and ensure supporting clinical documentation is present.
- Implement, monitor, and evaluate each resident’s comprehensive plan of care.
- Audit medical records to verify documentation supporting all MDS-coded items.
- Provide education and guidance to department heads, physicians, and staff as needed.
- Interpret regulations, coverage guidelines, and quality reporting requirements, serving as the primary resource for SNF PPS and Quality Reporting Programs.
- In the absence of the Social Services Designee, assist with scheduling and leading interdisciplinary care plan meetings as requested.
RAI Coordinator Responsibilities
- Utilize the current RAI Manual during all assessment and coding processes.
- Schedule Assessment Reference Dates (ARDs) for payment and OBRA assessments.
- Provide weekly and as-needed ARD and assessment schedules to the interdisciplinary team.
- Ensure timely completion of MDS sections and Care Area Assessments (CAAs).
- Transmit assessments in accordance with current regulations through the QIES ASAP system.
- Review, print, and confirm validation reports.
- Correct fatal errors promptly and retransmit assessments until accepted.
- Facilitate the completion and updating of resident care plans to reflect current needs.
- Identify residents requiring Significant Change in Status assessments and communicate with the care team.
- Participate in resource utilization and triple-check meetings prior to billing.
- Assist with admissions, discharges, or resident care as needed.
- Participate in continuing education, required training, and competency assessments.
- Complete administrative duties, including QAPI activities and committee participation.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing or Administrator.
Qualifications
- Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse license in the State of Kansas.
- Completion of assessment training as required by state and federal regulations.
- Experience in a Continuing Care Retirement Community preferred.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
- Intermediate computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and electronic medical record systems.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
- Willingness to work beyond regular hours, including weekends and holidays as needed.
- Positive interpersonal skills with individuals of all ages and cultures.
