Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of East Bigger Avenue and South Main.

The building at 722-724 South Main was first constructed in 1935 as Charles Christopher Grocery and Hardware.

About 1940, it was converted to be the Dr. Pepper Bottling Company. In 1949, it became the Grapette Bottling Co. with Verne Hamilton as president, C.W. Kelley as V.P. and Guy Ankerholtz as Sec./Mgr. The first photo shows Bill Lehman and his Pontiac stock racing car in front of Grapette Bottling in 1950.

Bill raced mostly at the fairgrounds track and was sponsored by the Wat Henry Pontiac Dealership of Tulsa, Oklahoma. 

The building was vacant for a time, then Richard Blick moved his beer distributorship to this location between 1963-1971. The second photo shows Blick's sponsorship of the week's professional boxing championships broadcast on <a href="https://www.kwbwradio.com/default.asp?sec_id=140000775">KWBW radio</a> in 1967.

 Between 1979-1982, the building became the Seven-Up Bottling Co. warehouse. 

Between 1983-1987, it was S&amp;S Classic Cars  owned by Eldon Steffans. The third photo shows the 722-724 S. Main building today, owned by Barb, Jon and Donald Badget, and used for warehouse storage.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Grapette Bottling Co. - Vol. 53

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northwest corner of East 4th Avenue and North Elm.

The building at 324 E. 4th was built and opened as Lums Restaurant in 1969 with Jack Taylor as manager, but it didn't last long. At that point, the subject of today's article entered. 

Ted Nieciecki was an interesting entrepreneur. In 1972, he started Ted's Family Restaurant in this building. The first photo shows the business at opening.

In 1974, he turned this into the Golden Cymbal Supper Club. Between 1976 to 1982, it was the Hutchinson Appliance Center, owned by Jack Zabel. 

In 1983 and 1984, it was Budget Rental with A.D. Arney.

In 1987, it became Casa De Zaki Restaurant, owned by Troy Albright. 

In May 1994, it became Connecting Point Computer Center, owned by Steve Harper. The name was changed to Network Management Group Inc. in 2000. The second photo shows that business.

In May 2019, NMGI moved to larger quarters at 734 E. 4th. The third photo shows the tenant of 324 E. 4th today, the PRMI Support Center, owned by Billzy L.L.C. of Henderson, Nevada.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Ted's Family Restaurant - Vol. 52

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northwest corner of 13th Avenue and North Severance.

Hutchinson High School history started with Central School,&nbsp;which was Hutchinson's first dedicated high school, at 5th and Maple in 1891. 

The second high school was at 28 E. 7th Ave. and opened in the fall of 1910. 

This article is dedicated  to the third high school. 

In 1960, two new buildings were added to the Plaza Junior High and a new "sprawling campus" high school was opened at 810 E. 13th Ave. The first photo shows that conversion in progress.

The second photo shows the completed high school, taken from the Sports Arena in 1963. At that time, the parking lots for the high school and Sports Arena were still unpaved.

The third photo shows the problems the unpaved lot posed after rain storms in 1969.

Hutch High underwent another major renovation during the 2011-2012 school year. The fourth photo shows Hutchinson High School today from the parking lot at 810 E. 13th.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch High - Vol. 51

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of East 11th Avenue and North Plum.

Hutchinson Junior College began in 1928 in an addition on the north side of the high school at 28 East 7th.

As attendance grew in 1938, work was started on a new campus located on the northeast corner of 11th and Plum. Lockman Hall was completed and, just east of that, Gowans Stadium was constructed — named after the college's first superintendent, J.W. Gowans. The first photo is an aerial taken of Gowans Stadium, football field and track, by 17-year-old Nation Meyer,&nbsp;who was earning his pilot's license, in the fall of 1938.

The second photo, taken in 1965, is another aerial showing the entire college campus and Sports Arena.

In August 2006, voters approved a bond to refurbish Gowans Stadium. It was dedicated in August of 2006. The third photo shows another aerial of the college campus and the new Gowans Stadium in 2014.

The fourth photo shows the inside of Gowans Stadium today with its new, huge video board. It is a facility that Hutchinson and the community college can be very proud of.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Gowans Stadium - Vol. 50

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 2400 block of North Main Street on the west side.

Chet Bourell was a flooring installer, mainly in the 1930s. In 1945, he started his first retail store endeavor. Chet's Custom Floor Covering Co. at 1309 N. Main quickly expanded to include 1311 N. Main. 

Business went so well, that he built a new building at 2411 N. Main and, on May 1, 1949, he opened Bourell's Floors at this location. The first photo shows a night view at opening.

He ran that business until his death in 1957, when his son, Marion, acquired it. In 1996, his son, Mike, and wife, Kathy, bought the business and ran it until its closing in 2010.

About 2012, dentist Dr. John Dahm bought the building and completely remodeled it. The second photo shows the new dentistry look.

In 2018, dentist Dr. Jason Hatch bought the business from Dr. Dahm at his retirement. The third photo shows the business today at 2411 N. Main, Hutchinson Main Street Dental, with the property owned by Hatch Holdings L.L.C.

 </figure>&nbsp;STEVE HARMON Hutch Post ContributorToday's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 2400 block of North Main Street on the west side.Chet Bourell was a flooring installer, mainly in the 1930s. In 1945, he started his first retail store endeavor. Chet's Custom Floor Covering Co. at 1309 N. Main quickly expanded to include 1311 N. Main. Business went so well, that he built a new building at 2411 N. Main and, on May 1, 1949, he opened Bourell's Floors at this location. The first photo shows a night view at opening.<figure>

 </figure>He ran that business until his death in 1957, when his son, Marion, acquired it. In 1996, his son, Mike, and wife, Kathy, bought the business and ran it until its closing in 2010.About 2012, dentist Dr. John Dahm bought the building and completely remodeled it. 📷 Throwback Thursday: Bourell's - Vol. 49

<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/ba0335a2-0c2d-4240-b62a-3cbff60095f6">Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us back to the northwest corner of North Main Street and West Second Avenue (Part 2 of a two-part series).</a>

 Another substantial building on this corner, not included in last week's article, was the Midland Hotel. This three-story hotel, which opened in May of 1888,  was constructed in an "L" shape with the livery facilities on the back side. The first photo shows it when brand new, taken by Glines.

 It contained many retail businesses on the first floor with street fronts. It survived the 1903 flood, but the 1929 flood devastated it. The second photo shows the Midland during the 1929 flood, which shows how high the water got.

After a fire gutted the interior, it was condemned and razed in 1931. The third photo shows the Midland's replacement between 1932 and 1936.

The Shamrock Lunch Diner (a Valentine Diner) was there during prohibition, still going on in Kansas, and had some interesting offerings.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Midland Hotel - Vol. 48

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northwest corner of North Main Street and West Second Avenue (Part 1 of a two-part series).

 There have been some very substantial buildings on this Hutchinson corner. One of them was the Wolcott Building. The seven-story buff building was built in 1937 by longtime resident Mahlon Ely, on land owned by F.D. Wolcott. 

It was the first air-conditioned office building in Kansas. The construction cost was $250,000. The architects for the structure were Mann &amp; Co., the builder was Foy Construction. The first photo shows the Wolcott under construction. 

In 1955, there was an addition to it by D.C. Bass &amp; Son of Oklahoma City. The second photo shows the Wolcott in 1965 with its trail of neighbors to the north: Frease Drug, A.G. Edwards, Cobbler Shoes, Boren's Sporting Goods, Esquire Bar and Factory Outlet Shoes. 

In 1985, W.A. Michaelis of Wichita bought the building from Dick Popp, assistant publisher of the Huch News. Michaelis also owned the Hutch National Bank. The bank wanted the property for its use. With the A/C and heating needing replacement and the tenancy going down, it was doomed for demolition. The third photo shows the Wolcott coming down in 1988, truly a sad day. 

The fourth photo shows the 201 N. Main property today, DCI park and gazebo. The property is owned by Data Center Inc. of 20 W. 2nd.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Wolcott Building - Vol. 47

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the unit block of East 30th Avenue on the south side. 

The very first A&amp;W Root Beer Drive-In  in Hutch was built in May of 1956 by William Owens at 27 E. 30th. The first photo shows the drive-in on an August 1959 evening.

The second photo shows one of the carhops in action the same day.

In 1962, Gordon and Marge Troyer purchased the business and continued there until 1967 when they moved the drive-in to 206 W. 4th. They were only there until the end of 1968. 

In 1969, Ron and Jean Peterson purchased the old 27 E. 30th property, razed the old building and built a more-modern A&amp;W Root Beer Drive-In there again. That A&amp;W outlet was there until the end of 1978. 

Since then, a small office building has occupied the property. The third photo shows the 27 E. 30th property today, with The Trust Company of Kansas and A New You Day Spa residing there. The building is owned by the Shamar 1300 L.L.C.

📷 Throwback Thursday: A&W Root Beer Drive-In - Vol. 46

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 1300 block of East Avenue A on the north side. 

The building at 1326 E. Ave. A was built originally as the 4 S Razor Blade Factory in 1916. It was only able to stay viable until 1918. 

It was then that J.D. Conard, President of the Salt City Business College, had an innovative idea. He started the Hutchinson Auto and Tractor School there as a satellite campus. The first photo shows the architectural renderings for that endeavor. 

It was right next door to the Massey-Harris Manufacturing Plant that produced combines and tractors, so the two worked in tandem. The second photo shows the school with all its students and instructors out front in 1920. 

This endeavor only lasted until 1921, that's when Massey-Harris took over the building. Fast forward to 1970, that's when Martinez &amp; Sons Machine Shop took over the building. The third photo shows that business, which was there until 1993.

That's when Interfaith Housing purchased the building. The fourth photo shows the 1326 E. Ave. A building today, still the Interfaith Housing &amp; Community Services Inc. with Clint Nelson serving as President and Chief Executive Officer.

 </figure>This endeavor only lasted until 1921, that's when Massey-Harris took over the building. Fast forward to 1970, that's when Martinez &amp; Sons Machine Shop took over the building. The third photo shows that business, which was there until 1993.<figure>

📷 Throwback Thursday: 1326 E. Ave. A - Vol. 45

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of North Pershing Street and East Fourth Avenue. 

The J.S. Dillon and Sons Grocery Stores were created right after World War I by Ray and Clyde Dillon. They flourished quickly and spread to many outlets. About 1932, they constructed store #10 at 800 E. 4th. The first photo shows that location in 1940.

The second photo not only shows that Dillons store, but also the Bob-O-Leah Dairy next door at 804 E. 4th in 1941. That business was there between 1941-1947.

In 1955, Dillons closed this store to build a bigger, newer store just west at 734 E. 4th, which opened in 1956. In the 1960s, this building was Trend Stores Inc. Shoes. 

In the 1970s, the store was Austin's Inc. Shoes. 

In the 1980s, it had become a bingo hall. About 1990, Don and Janice Frye opened Mom's Attic, antiques, books and records in this location. The third photo shows that business.

In 2018, Steve and Shirley Fiffe purchased the property and created The Warehouse on 4th, antiques and stuff. The fourth photo shows the property at 800 E. 4th today, still The Warehouse on 4th, with the property owned by Fiffe Enterprises L.L.C.

📷 Throwback Thursday: J.S. Dillon and Sons - Vol. 44

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 100 block of North Main on the west side. 

Ben Nussbaum came to Hutchinson about 1885 and opened a small men's clothing store at 203 N. Main on the ground floor of the Midland Hotel in 1886. The first photo shows that location.

After rapidly expanding and stocking higher-grade apparel, in 1892 he built the two-story building at 119-121 N. Main. The second photo shows that location about 1908.

In 1921, the building went through extensive remodeling both inside and out. In 1960, the Meschke family bought the business, continued the offerings and eventually changed the name to Meschke's in 1963. The third photo shows that name change in 1971.

In 1988, Meschke's went out of business. In 1989, Sport Shack appeared at that location, owned by Richard Strano. The fourth photo shows that business, which closed about 2017.

The fifth photo shows the 119-121 N. Main business today, showing the latest location of Reffner's, now owned by Brian and Kathy Reffner. The building is owned by the Ging Investment Co.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Sport Shack - Vol. 43

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of West 1st Avenue and North Washington. 

The building at 28 W. 1st had an interesting history before its demise. In 1908, Frank Manda built the Coliseum Hotel - European Plan at 28 W. 1st, he was also the proprietor. 

It featured a saltwater swimming pool with in-room saltwater baths. This feature was fed by a saltwater brine well drilled toward the back of the hotel. The first photo shows the Coliseum Hotel about 1913.

In the 1920s, it was renamed the Reno Hotel. In May of 1930, Graber Furniture moved from 101 S. Main to this location and was there until 1984. The second photo shows Graber's there in 1937.

In 1988, it became Woody's Furniture-TV-Appliances, owned by the Hayes family. The third photo shows that at opening.

On Jan. 17, 2001, the Hutchinson gas explosions happened. The fourth photo shows Woody's completely engulfed, fed by the uncapped salt brine well from the Coliseum's days.

The fifth photo shows the 28 W. 1st location today as a City of Hutchinson parking lot with a monument pillar on the corner with some plaques on it describing the property history.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Coliseum Hotel - Vol. 42

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northwest corner of West Avenue B and South Main. 

John Hess had a livestock business at his residence at 103 W. First in 1906. 

In 1907, he purchased the A.J. Graves Coal, Flour and Feed business at 129 S. Main. The first photo shows the Hess Feed Store in 1909.

Notice the brick piles on both sides of the building. The city was just getting ready to lay street bricks that are still visible there today. 

About 1920, The Dillon Mercantile Co., owned by C.O. Mammel and David Theede, purchased the building for their second mercantile location. The second photo shows that business during the 1929 flood. 

About 1943, the building became the B &amp; Main Cafe, owned by Carl Hughbanks, which was there until 1958 under a variety of owners. 

After that date, the tenants varied from furniture stores, appliance stores, to antique stores. The third photo shows Cline's-Duke's Mixture Antiques about 1990.

In 2009, Marty Lee and husband bought the building and remodeled it to become Tesori Gifts &amp; Boutique. The fourth photo shows that business.

 The fifth photo shows the 129 S. Main tenant today, Amelia's Boutique, owned by Amy Quillen.

 </figure>Notice the brick piles on both sides of the building. The city was just getting ready to lay street bricks that are still visible there today. About 1920, The Dillon Mercantile Co., owned by C.O. Mammel and David Theede, purchased the building for their second mercantile location.  </figure>About 1943, the building became the B &amp; Main Cafe, owned by Carl Hughbanks, which was there until 1958 under a variety of owners. After that date, the tenants varied from furniture stores, appliance stores, to antique stores. The third photo shows Cline's-Duke's Mixture Antiques about 1990.<figure>

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hess Feed Store - Vol. 41

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 4200 block of West Fourth Avenue, both north and south sides of Mohawk Road. 

Fun Valley recreational area was the brainchild of Larry Brown of L&amp;B Oil from the Nickerson area. Fun Valley was developed into a four-diamond softball complex that featured camping, boating, fishing, swimming, a four- chute waterslide, a go-cart track and, eventually, an impressive corporate office complex. 

Mohawk Speedway, which originally opened in June of 1955 as a half-mile racetrack, was renamed Fun Valley Speedway. The softball complex opened in 1980. The first photo shows the softball complex at opening. 

On Feb. 15, 1980, Brown was issued a building permit to build a waterslide at 4200 W. 4th for $175,000. It opened March 26, 1981. The second and third photos show the waterslide in 1982.

Fun Valley even had some private investors. In 1980, the racetrack held a promotional concert with nationally-known singer and comedian Jim Stafford.

In 1982, Larry Brown ran into some money problems. 

In May of 1983, the city bought the softball complex, campground and waterslide. Maintenance problems and other costs caused the closing of the waterslide after 1984. The fourth photo shows the remnants of the waterslide today at 4200 W. 4th, hardly visible any more with the overgrowth of trees around it.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Fun Valley - Vol. 40

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 300 block of North Main Street on the east side. 

The little building at 304 N. Main was built about 1910 and one of its first tenants was the Iris Theatre, a B-movie theatre showing non-first-run films. The first photo shows the Iris in 1929.

In the 1960s, this slot was the Burnett's News stand. In 1967, Ron and Jolene Cross bought the business and changed the name to Crossroads Books, Magazines and Newspapers. The second photo shows the business during a parade on Main in 1967. 

They were there quite a while. The third photo shows the business in 1980.

After 32 years, Crossroads finally closed in 1999. In 2000, it was City Blueprint and Reproduction Co. In 2002, Ron and Lovella Kelly opened Sarah's Catholic Bookstore in this location. The fourth photo shows this enterprise in 2015. 

The Kellys closed this store in 2017 and then sold the property to Jarrett and Monica Cullens in 2022. The fifth photo shows the business at 304 N. Main today as Thoracic Park Wellness Clinic - Jarrett Cullens D.C.

📷 Throwback Thursday: 304 N. Main - Vol. 39

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 600 block of North Main Street on the west side. 

The unusually-designed building at 615 N. Main was built around the start of 1917 and was named the North Main Garage with Allen McCandless being the proprietor. The first photo shows the business taken about 1920 by professional photographer Albert Wade.

In 1923, Harry Rowland and Keith Zeigler purchased the business and renamed it the Zeigler-Rowland Service Station. The second photo shows that business in 1928.

About 1940, it became the Sam Schneider Oil Co. Filling Station #1 of four. Between 1944 to 1955, the building was occupied by the John Knightly Motor Company. The company sold new DeSotos and Plymouths, and had used cars as well. 

From 1955 to 1959. it was the Ely Paint &amp; Body Shop. From 1960 to 1963, it was the White &amp; Wyer Auto Repair. The building was vacant between 1963 to 1968. 

On Easter of 1969, Perry Reger Sr. moved his Reger Rental business from 717 N. Main to 615 N. Main. The third photo shows 615 N. Main today, still Reger Rental, but now owned by Perry Reger Jr. They have been at this location for 54 years — another example of a longtime successful family-owned local business in Hutchinson.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 38

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northwest corner of West First Avenue and North Main. 

The building at 103 N. Main has been many things since being built in 1910. The Deluxe Theatre opened in 1912 and was managed by William Fulton and owned by the Standard Theatre Co. The first photo shows the Deluxe Theatre and the George Hipple Clothing Co., 103 and 105 N. Main during the 1929 flood. 

The theatre was showing the Harry Carey film "Burning Bridges." The Deluxe was damaged by fire in 1930 for a $10,000 loss. It reopened in April 1930 and was named the Strand Theatre as its keystone shows. The Strand closed in July 1959 and sat vacant for a while. The second photo, taken in 1963, promotes moviegoers to visit the Fox.

Spangler's Photo Supply moved to 103 N. Main with a grand opening on Dec. 4, 1964. The third photo shows Spangler's in 1971, next to Orth's Cards &amp; Gifts. 

The fourth photo still shows Spangler's there in 1988, next to the Lunchbox. 

In June 1988, Evans Sewing Center moved to 103 N. Main. Later, the Curiosity shop was there. In 2008, The Heimerman family purchased the property, remodeled it and — in 2009 — moved Carl's Bar to this location. The fifth photo shows 103 N. Main today, still Carl's Bar, still owned by the Heimermans with the property owned by Dph88L.L.C.

Main has been many things since being built in 1910. The Deluxe Theatre opened in 1912 and was managed by William Fulton and owned by the Standard Theatre Co. The first photo shows the Deluxe Theatre and the George Hipple Clothing Co., 103 and 105 N. Main during the 1929 flood. <figure>

 </figure>The theatre was showing the Harry Carey film "Burning Bridges." The Deluxe was damaged by fire in 1930 for a $10,000 loss. It reopened in April 1930 and was named the Strand Theatre as its keystone shows. The Strand closed in July 1959 and sat vacant for a while. The second photo, taken in 1963, promotes moviegoers to visit the Fox.<figure>

 </figure>In June 1988, Evans Sewing Center moved to 103 N. Main. Later, the Curiosity shop was there. In 2008, The Heimerman family purchased the property, remodeled it and — in 2009 — moved Carl's Bar to this location. The fifth photo shows 103 N. Main today, still Carl's Bar, still owned by the Heimermans with the property owned by Dph88L.L.C.<figure>

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 37

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 1200 block of North Main Street on the west side. 

Charles Winchester was a very successful businessman and owned the Winchester Packing Co. About 1910, he built a large, lovely home at 1219 N. Main. The first photo shows that home about 1925.

Charles died in 1929 (age 74) and his widow, Nell, continued to live there. In April of 1935, she sold the home to Jim Elliott and Dale Gard. They converted the home to a modern mortuary. Gard even resided there for a while. The name was Elliott-Gard Funeral Home. The second photo shows that conversion in 1937.

In 1948, Bill Elliott joined the business. The third photo shows the building improvements in 1951.

In 1952, the Elliotts bought out Gard's partnership. In 1953, Don Elliott joined the firm. In 1962, the chapel and covered drive were added, and the name was changed to Elliott Mortuary. The fourth photo shows that building upgrade.

The fifth photo shows Elliott Mortuary today, still at 1219 N. Main. Notice the original house is still visible, although the siding has changed. This exemplifies a longterm family business, now run by Tom Elliott, that has prospered for 88 years.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 36

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 200 block of South Main Street on the west side. 

Today's article is about Smith's Market at 211 S. Main. But, before this property was Smith's, it was the Cassidy-Kingsley Auto Co. in 1910. 

The first photo shows that dealership selling the Regal 30 autos. Notice the steering wheels on the right side, not uncommon at that time.

Fast-forward 20-some years. In 1933, Henry and Minnie Smith opened the Smith's Fruit &amp; Vegetable Markets at 211 S. Main and at 610 N. Adams. Henry passed away in 1934, but Minnie kept the dream alive for many years. 

By 1946, Lavern Burns became owner of the market. In 1954, it was sold to Ewing Wright and there was some remodeling. The second photo shows the deconstruction of the exterior façade and replacement of a more modern storefront.

The third photo shows the Smith's Fruit Market delivery truck in 1961 with John Boling (Chris Barnes' uncle) the driver. 

In 1964, the Barnes family entered the picture with Earl Barnes and Nile Burnes purchasing the business. Eventually, just the Barnes family would run the business and pass it down the family line. 

Chris and Gail Barnes have done even more remodeling since, even restoring the front façade to resemble the original structure between 2007-2012. The fourth photo shows the Smith's Market today at 211 S. Main, still owned by the Barnes, with the property ownership of 211 S. Main L.L.C.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 35

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the&nbsp;"Midtown Shopping Center" on the east side of the 1300 block of North Main Street.

 In the mid-1930s, Arthur Valentine partnered with the Ablah Hotel Supply Co. and started manufacturing small, portable lunch buildings in Wichita. He produced at least 2,000 "Valentine Diners" in various designs in a 40-year career. 

They were very small and had fewer than a dozen seating stools placed around a serving counter. There are still many in use today. The first photo shows one of those in 1959.

It was first placed there in 1946 by Charles Hall and called the "Chef System Lunch #3" — addressed as 1308-A N. Main. It changed hands many times with the last being in 1965, called the "Chef Cafe" and owned by Everett Waite. 

Next to that was "Friendship House Gifts," owned by Walter Pace at 1306 N. Main — 1959 was the last year for that business. That's when Dick Langenwalter of Reno Hardware, just to the South at 1304 N. Main, purchased the properties and expanded his business into those slots. The second photo shows the same properties after Westlake Hardware purchased the business.

The third photo shows the 1306-1308 N. Main business today, still Westlake Hardware, with the property being owned by RENOS L.L.C.  c/o Barbara Lappin.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 34

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the Carey Park entrance at 1000 S. Main. 

Riverside Park existed as early as 1888 with animal selections for the public. By 1910, "Koon" Beck, a wild animal collector and breeder, had assumed management of the park. The park boasted a swimming pool, roller skating rink, chance booths, amphitheater, small steam train and waterfowl lagoon.

In 1910, Beck started construction of a breathtaking roller coaster. It took 20 men to construct and was an exact reproduction of the one in Denver, a figure eight. 

The coaster opened to a big crowd July 23, 1910. The first photo shows its positioning next to the Arkansas River Bridge.

The second photo shows an aerial view of the tracks taken from the top of the searchlight tower.

The third photo shows the roller coaster and the trolley tracks turnaround next to the Carriage Works building.

On Nov. 10, 1915, the roller coaster and the searchlight tower were completely destroyed by a 9 p.m. tornado, but it was quickly rebuilt. It was dismantled shortly after that when a young girl was killed on the ride. 

In 1921, Emerson Carey donated 200 acres of land — just southeast of this park — to the city. That land was merged with the existing park and the name was changed to Carey Park. The fourth photo shows the current park entrance at the end of Main Street, very close to where the roller coaster was.

 </figure>STEVE HARMON Hutch Post Contributor Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the Carey Park entrance at 1000 S. Main. Riverside Park existed as early as 1888 with animal selections for the public. By 1910, "Koon" Beck, a wild animal collector and breeder, had assumed management of the park. The park boasted a swimming pool, roller skating rink, chance booths, amphitheater, small steam train and waterfowl lagoon.In 1910, Beck started construction of a breathtaking roller coaster. It took 20 men to construct and was an exact reproduction of the one in Denver, a figure eight. The coaster opened to a big crowd July 23, 1910. The first photo shows its positioning next to the Arkansas River Bridge.<figure>

 </figure>The third photo shows the roller coaster and the trolley tracks turnaround next to the Carriage Works building.<figure>

 </figure>On Nov. 10, 1915, the roller coaster and the searchlight tower were completely destroyed by a 9 p.m. tornado, but it was quickly rebuilt. It was dismantled shortly after that when a young girl was killed on the ride. In 1921, Emerson Carey donated 200 acres of land — just southeast of this park — to the city. That land was merged with the existing park and the name was changed to Carey Park. The fourth photo shows the current park entrance at the end of Main Street, very close to where the roller coaster was.<figure>

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 33

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northwest corner of West 20th Avenue and North Monroe. 

St. Elizabeth's Hospital was built in 1920 at a cost of $150,000 at 500 W. 20th. The 50-bed, Catholic Church-run facility with a nursing school was on the edge of town at the time. 

The hospital's managing nuns lived on-site. The building was dedicated April 4, 1920. The first photo shows the original building in 1930. 

With an addition added in 1932, it offered 107 beds and became known as St. Elizabeth's Mercy Hospital. The second photo shows the interior lobby about 1960.

 In 1971, it merged with Grace Hospital to form the Hutchinson Hospital Corporation. The new, single hospital opened on Sept. 8, 1975, and the old St. Elizabeth's building was vacated and sold. The building has gone through different renovations. By 2015 it was owned by Crossroads Lumber Company and offered mixed spaces of retail and office units for rent. 

Since then, it has fallen into disrepair. The third photo shows the building today at 500 W. 20th. It is owned by the Reno County Board of County Commissioners.
