Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of East Second Avenue and North Walnut. 

The early Reno County Homesteaders had few options for jobs in 1873. The wholesale slaughter of what is estimated at four million bison near extinction caused many to collect the bones by the wagonload for money just to keep from starving. 

These bones were used by eastern manufacturers for fertilizer and shirt buttons, and piled at the location of today's topic. 

Fred Harvey worked with the A.T.&amp; S.F. Railway to build a first-class hotel with his restaurant in it. That hotel, designed by Louis Curtiss of K.C., cost $250,000 to build — the most expensive hotel in the state at that time. It was named the Bisonte after the bone pile that was located there. 

Construction was from 1906-1908. The first photo shows the Bisonte, new in 1908.

The second photo shows the north (track-side) view in 1920.

The third photo shows the elegant interior lobby.

The popularity of auto travel caused the railroads to slow passenger traffic and the Bisonte suffered too. In 1946, the American Legion bought the hotel for $25,000. But even the Legion couldn't make it work financially. 

In 1964, all the contents were auctioned off and the grand old building was razed in 1965. The fourth photo shows the Bisonte coming down (what a shame).

In 1967, the Ramada Inn constructed the current building. The fifth photo shows the 100 E. 2nd location today, now the New Beginnings - Meadowlark Commons &amp; Walnut Court Apartments.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 25

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of East Second Avenue and North Elm. 

In 1901, D.E. Richards started selling candy out of the back of a feed store on Main Street. In 1902, he formed a partnership with A.R. (Rube) Scheble and built a three-story building at 400 E. 2nd. The Richards-Scheble Candy Co. was born. 

On the night of July 2, 1911, the candy factory burned completely to the ground. The first photo shows the residue from the next morning.

Poor water pressure caused the fire department big problems and the cause of the fire was unknown. They were well insured and vowed to rebuild even bigger and better. 

In 1912, they rebuilt the factory. The second photo shows the new structure in 1929 after an addition was added.

The third photo shows the candy packaging room with workers about 1930.

On Jan. 30, 1934, Rube died mysteriously at night in an elevator accident. Eventually, other family members and decedents took over the management of the business. The Candy Co. closed for good on July 4, 1954. 

The building was taken over by the Can-A-Pop Beverage Co. but only operated for two years. From 1958 to 1978, the Zephyr and Western Mfg. companies operated from here. 

In 1992, Chuck's Sheet Metal and Lee Contractors resided here. The fourth photo shows the building today at 400 E. 2nd, owned by Basil Wilson. His family also resides there.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 24

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of Sherman Avenue and North Main. 

As the city continued to grow in 1886, the original wooden structures on this property were razed to construct larger stone buildings. 

In 1887, the three-story Masonic Temple was built and housed mostly real estate, loan, insurance, lawyer offices and a tailor shop. 

In 1906, the Commercial National Bank opened here. The first photo shows that enterprise.

The bank didn't last all that long and many other businesses occupied the ground floors. Eventually, the property went downhill and, in January 1965, the slot addresses of 2-4-6-8-10 were all demolished to make room for the new, larger Woolworth's store. The second photo shows that building when it was new.

The entire Woolworth's organization fell on hard times and the Hutchinson store closed in 1981. Between 1984 to 1997, the C.R. Anthony Co. department store operated out of this location. The third photo shows that store&nbsp; in 1988.

In 2012, it was Hayes Home Furnishings and, in 2015, it was the Main Street Events Center. The fourth photo shows the property today — The Furniture &amp; Mattress Clearance Center, operated by Kevin Rule. Note: The large lion portrait was donated by Bob &amp; Ann Bush with the artwork done by T.E.C.H. artists.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 23

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southwest corner of North Main Street and 4th Avenue — 327 N. Main to be exact. 

John Severance's Street Railway was granted a franchise on June 5, 1886, for 21 years to construct, maintain and operate within the city limits. This was a single short-cart powered by horse or mule. It was a rousing success. 

In 1888, the Hutchinson Street Railway Co. was formed, bought out the John Severance interests on Oct. 17 and continued operating the horse-drawn street cars. 

The opening day of the Hutchinson Interurban Railway (electrified) was Sept. 6, 1906. By 1910, the central transfer point was located at 4th &amp; Main. 

The first photo shows that location with six of the trolleys gathered for a photo by Bailey. The main office was at 327 N. Main along with the office of the Peoples Water, Light &amp; Power Co.

The third photo shows the 327 N. Main location today, Deming Studio, which has been there quite a while, but now Dave Deming is the proprietor. The property is part of the Bob Ging Properties, LLC.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 22

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the unit block of East 4th Avenue on the south side. 

S.J. Houston was from Wichita and owned a string of lumber yards in this part of the state. In 1913, he bought out the inventory of the Campbell Lumber Company at 417 E. 2nd, purchased the property at 15 E. 4th, razed the houses there and built the S.J. Houston Lumber Yard there. 

The first photo shows that concern in 1913.

In 1916, Houston sold interest to R.H. Doughty. The business then became Houston-Doughty Lumber, and employed George H. Stuckey and Nick Renner to manage it. 

In 1947, the group of George H. Stuckey, V.G. Cunningham, George F. Stuckey and Frank A. Stuckey purchased the lumber yard from Houston-Doughty. 

In 1961, Stuckey Lumber moved to new quarters at 11th and Lorraine. 

In 1964, the Faraday Corp. of Glendale, California, built a 35-unit motel on the property for $180,000. Charles Messersmith and his wife moved here from Rockford, Illinois, to manage it. The new motel was named the Astro Motel. 

The Astro has seen a few different ownerships since then. The second photo shows the property today, now known as the Sky Palace Inn &amp; Suites by Jasper.

The 15 E. 4th property is now owned by Harshad Bhakta of Wichita.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 21

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southwest corner of Avenue E and south Main streets. 

In 1907, the Kansas City Stock Yard Company, after acquiring the Hutchinson Stock Yard at Ave. F and Main, paid the Armour Company $500,000 to build a packing house. 

The packing house took the Swift &amp; Co. name, which already had other facilities by that name. The first photo shows the plant with its creamery about 1930.

 By December 1902 it was hugely successful. That month alone, Swift &amp; Co. shipped 161,186 pounds of poultry from Hutch. Fat turkeys, chickens, ducks and geese were sent to both the East &amp; West coasts — 95,000 pounds of this was dressed here before shipping. 

Four railcars were shipped alive. Theodore Roosevelt was president between 1901 to 1909. He championed breaking up bad trusts during his Square Deal domestic policies. Swift &amp; Co. was one of those. The plant closed in 1938. 

The cost of rehabbing the old building was too much. It was consolidated into other facilities. Between 1947 to 1958, it was the Crown Poultry Products Inc. and the ARKAY Egg Products Co. 

On Nov. 29, 1958, the old building burned down. The second photo shows the property today. Most of it has been taken over by the Tyson Foods Company, except the very corner that is still the Richard Gray Barber Shop.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 20

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the unit block of West Avenue A on the south side. 

Not many are old enough to remember, but Cow Creek was an open channel west of Main Street. 

The first photo shows what that looked like in the early 1900s.

In 1928, the city commissioned the Stamey Construction Co. to cover the open channel from Main Street to Washington Street. The second photo shows that work in progress.

The creek is still open from Washington to Adams Street. This allowed more business access along Avenue A. 

One of those businesses was the Bornholdt Feed &amp; Seed downtown store, owned by Vernon and Edna Bornholdt. They also had the location at 1518 W. 4th that later became a garden center. The third photo shows the Bornholdt location at 13 W. Avenue A in 1959.

After the old Isham's Furniture Store building at 101 S. Main burned down in 1992, the city razed the entire south side of the block and developed the Avenue A Park and Splash Park. The fourth photo shows the park maintenance building today, approximately where the Bornholdt business was located.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southeast corner of Sherman Avenue and South Main streets. 

This article deals with a more-recent history of the businesses that have been there. 

The first photo is from 1963, showing Torrence Jewelers, Beardslee's Fabrics, Sears and Roebuck, Singer Sewing Machines, Meschke's South Store and Adams-Parker Furniture.

The second photo is from 1975, showing Torrence Jewelers, Beardslee's Fabrics, Western Auto, Team Electronics, Meschke's South Store and Adams-Parker Furniture.

Even the businesses that were still there from the first photo showed a lot of exterior improvements. 

The third photo is from 2021, showing the Bluebird Books Store.

The fourth photo shows the string of businesses as they are today: Crow &amp; Co. Book Store, Queen B Marketing, Beds For Less, The Young Life Club, AgTrax and Anima Bella.

This block would date back to Hutch's earliest history. In future installments, we will go back to some of the earliest businesses aligned there.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 18

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southwest corner of Avenue D and South Washington streets. 

In 1907, expert machinists George Rundell &amp; Granville Scanland founded Hutchinson Foundry &amp; Machine Works at 14 W. Ave. B. 

Business went so well, they needed a larger building to expand. In November 1912, the foundry moved into the new building at 401 S. Washington. 

They also took on a new business manager, Joseph P. O'Sullivan the First. (Note to article - Joe's father Mortimer O'Sullivan homesteaded the N.W. corner of U.S. 50 and Kent Road in 1872). 

The first photo shows the Hutchinson Foundry in 1912. 

They did general castings and machining. At that time, they cast 6,000 pounds of molten metal every-other day in a pyrotechnical display from a white-hot cauldron and poured it into a huge ladle.

Castings weighing more than a ton were handled with the same ease as a small automobile. They also did structural castings. They did a lot of sewer castings and manhole covers for towns all over Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado and New Mexico. The foundry was sold in 1972 to Go Steel Inc.

The second photo shows the Go Steel operation at that changeover. 

As the globalization of the world continued, the manufacturing of steel started to move to China and few places domestically could compete. 

Go Steel Inc. closed in 1981. The structures were all razed and metal warehouses were constructed. 

The third photo shows the 401 S. Washington property today, the Hutchinson Distribution Warehouse L.L.C. c/o Central National Bank of Junction City.

In 1907, expert machinists George Rundell &amp; Granville Scanland founded Hutchinson Foundry &amp; Machine Works at 14 W. Ave. B. Business went so well, they needed a larger building to expand. In November 1912, the foundry moved into the new building at 401 S. Washington. They also took on a new business manager, Joseph P. O'Sullivan the First. (Note to article - Joe's father Mortimer O'Sullivan homesteaded the N.W. corner of U.S. 50 and Kent Road in 1872). The first photo shows the Hutchinson Foundry in 1912. <figure>

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 17

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us&nbsp;to the southwest corner of Avenue G and South Main. 

In 1909, everyone was getting cars and many companies were making them to fill the demand. On Feb. 3, 1909, there was a state charter issued for $100,000 in capital stock for the St. Joe Motor Car Co. to move from Elkhart, Indiana, to Hutchinson and start manufacturing autos. 

George White built a two-story, cement-block building along the Missouri-Pacific rail line. It was to be named the Sellers Motor Car Company after O.G. Sellers. H.C. Shoemaker was the engineer and superintendent. 

On June 12, 1909, the first cars hit the streets. They made two models, a roadster and a touring car at $1,500. The company made high-quality, 35-horsepower, four-cylinder cars with a full-floating rear axle. 

The first photo shows the plant at 705 S. Main at opening. 

The second photo shows the machining shop. 

The third photo shows the trimming department about 1910. 

The investors eventually lost their money when it closed in 1912 because they couldn't compete with eastern manufacturers (like Henry Ford's production line). 

The fourth photo shows the property today with a brick warehouse on it, owned by Midwest Iron Inc. of Kansas City, Missouri.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 16

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the rural corner of East 4th Avenue and North Obee Road. 

The Iris Drive-In, sometimes called the Airport Drive-In Theatre, was built in 1948 by the Sproule brothers: Robert, Carl, Lee and George. 

DBA Sproule Theatre Circuit, the theatre was built at a cost of $75,000 with a 35-by-47-foot screen tower and a 500 car capacity. 

The theatre opened in July of 1948. The first feature was the 1946 comedy "A Night In Casablanca" starring the Marx Brothers. 

The Sproule Brothers built this as well as the State Theatre, later called the Flag Theatre. In May of 1966, Jay Wooten &amp; Dennis Montee purchased the drive-in, DBA Farmington Corporation. They also owned the Ayr-Vu and South Hutch drive-ins. 

The first photo shows The Iris from the air about 1968.

In 1972, Jay and Dennis sold the South Hutch and Iris to Commonwealth Theatres. On June 27, 1973, The Iris reopened as the Airport Drive-In. It started showing R and X-rated films, causing some problems. The venue was closed for good in 1982. 

The property stood empty until 1997 when the Rev. Harold Nelson was able to acquire the property to build a new church. The structures were all razed and, in 1998, The New Hope Baptist Church was built. 

The second photo shows the building at 4815 E. 4th &amp; Obee Rd. today, still the New Hope Baptist Church, with Brian Lee the pastor now.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 15

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the intersection of First Avenue and North Main Street at The Wiley Plaza. 

On Thursday, July 11, 1929, Lyons had 11 inches of rain. All that deluge collected into the Cow Creek Watershed and headed southeast. 

On Friday, July 12, 1929, The Hutch News headline was "Hutchinson Will Be Flooded," telling all the citizens a great wall of water would sweep in from the north. 

Ben Lee, the city engineer, took an airplane ride toward Lyons to look for himself. The wall of water was three miles wide and four-feet deep. He predicted the water would begin pouring into Hutchinson about 8 p.m.

 The dike gates were raised, but were overwhelmed. Saturday, July 13, downtown water levels ranged from one-to-four feet. Train service was entirely cut off because of washed-out tracks. The News basement was submerged, where the presses were. 

Wichita had to print the local paper. The next four photos are among the thousands taken. These are specifically from 1st &amp; Main. 

The first is from the top of the Wiley building looking west toward the Soldier &amp; Sailor monument.

 The second is of two fellows out in 1st street, showing the velocity of the water. 

The third is of the intersection, showing the American National Bank in the background. 

The fourth shows cars of the era in front of the Wiley building. The photo once again shows the water speed. 

This was Hutchinson's greatest natural disaster. It caused more than $1 million in damage — in 1929 dollars!

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 14

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 2300 block of East Avenue G on the south side. 

In 1915, airplane flight was in its infancy. Hutchinson had no airport at that time, but it did have Emerson Carey! He was Hutchinson's most-notable entrepreneur and visionary. 

Carey took a section of his farmland and turned it into a landing field. He made his sister, Mrs. W.E. Albright, the live-in manager of the property and the Albright Airfield was born. 

There were many national, as well as state, notables who made their way through this facility. Carey even started the Hutchinson Airways Corp. for transporting mail and small packages. The first photo shows that plane.

 He also started a pilot training school, known as the Mid-American Air College. The second photo shows that plane.

 Carey named his son, William, as president of both the airways and the college with both offices located at 1326 E. Ave. A, where Interfaith Housing is now located. 

The field was abandoned in 1930 to construct a cement runway airport at 4th and Airport Road. Its dedication was June 6, 1930. That property was also owned by Emerson Carey. 

At the dedication, there were 23 airplanes and two gliders shown for the celebration. The third photo shows an aerial of the Albright Airfield location between Lorraine and Halstead on the south side of East Avenue G.

 </figure>STEVE HARMON Hutch Post ContributorToday's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 2300 block of East Avenue G on the south side. In 1915, airplane flight was in its infancy. Hutchinson had no airport at that time, but it did have Emerson Carey! He was Hutchinson's most-notable entrepreneur and visionary. Carey took a section of his farmland and turned it into a landing field. He made his sister, Mrs. W.E. Albright, the live-in manager of the property and the Albright Airfield was born. There were many national, as well as state, notables who made their way through this facility. Carey even started the Hutchinson Airways Corp. for transporting mail and small packages. The first photo shows that plane.<figure>

 </figure> Carey named his son, William, as president of both the airways and the college with both offices located at 1326 E. Ave. A, where Interfaith Housing is now located. The field was abandoned in 1930 to construct a cement runway airport at 4th and Airport Road. Its dedication was June 6, 1930. That property was also owned by Emerson Carey. At the dedication, there were 23 airplanes and two gliders shown for the celebration. The third photo shows an aerial of the Albright Airfield location between Lorraine and Halstead on the south side of East Avenue G.<figure>

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 13

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the unit block of East Sherman Avenue on the south side. 

The Hutchinson News started in 1872 as a weekly newspaper. By 1886, it had become a daily paper and was doing quite well. 

Ralph Easley was president and managing editor. He decided The News needed a new and larger building, so in 1887 he contracted with the Swift &amp; Congdon Construction company to build a new structure at 13-15 E. Sherman. The first photo shows that opening.

The second photo shows the Hutchinson News staff out front around 1888. 

In July of 1888, the Western Union Telegraph had wired up and moved in upstairs also. The News published out of this building until 1924.

At that time, W.Y. Morgan, the owner then, built a new building at 28 E. 2nd and moved The News there. 

Fast forward to 1969, The Adams Parker Furniture company opened a branch there calling it the "Carriage House." The third photo shows that enterprise, which was there until 1983. 

In 1986, Don Sturgeon purchased the building from Delos Smith and moved his fledgling glass company to the 13-15 E. Sherman address. 

In July 2018, Don Sturgeon retired and sold his glass company to Eshleman Investments L.L.C. out of Salina. The third photo shows the 13-15 E. Sherman building today, still Sturgeon Glass, but managed by Everett Gould.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 12

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northwest corner of West Third Avenue and North Washington Streets. The Underwood &amp; Viles Cold Storage Co. was organized about 1900. 

In February 1903, they opened a large facility at 307 N. Washington, costing $60,000. It used 700,000 bricks and had 300,000 cubic feet for storage. 

A large percentage was used to store apples and sweet potatoes. The egg storage rooms were the only ones of their kind for the first 10 years. The first photo shows that company ownership. 

In 1924, the company was owned by Eagan Produce Co. Arthur Eagan was president. In 1929, it was the Hutchinson Produce Co., owned by the Fraziers. The second photo shows that ownership. 

In 1941, J.S. Dillon &amp; Sons purchased the building and it became their cold storage and corporate offices. 

In 1948, Dillons moved its grocery warehouse and offices to 2700 E. 4th. In 1960, the produce storage moved there, too. 

In 1970, Harmon Furniture moved into 307 N. Washington after its downtown store burned down. 

In 1986, the building was razed and the old Nash Finch building, just north of it, was completely remodeled into an office complex named Trend II. 

The third photo shows the property today, still the Trend II office complex, owned by Via Fone Inc. out of Wichita.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 11

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 200 block of North Maple Street on the east side.

In 1887, a stone cutter named John Milligan started Milligan Marble Works at 312 E. 2nd. Later, he hired and trained a valuable employee named William Howard. 

They built a new building at 202 N. Maple to have railway access. Howard's son, Lerlowe Howard, started learning the trade at a young age.

 In 1909, 10-year-old Lerlowe carved a huge limestone puppy — 1,000 pounds and 3 ½-feet tall. In 1917, when WW1 broke out, Lerlowe enlisted and died in 1918 at the Battle of Chateau Thierry. 

In 1919, William Howard purchased the Monument business from Milligan with Lerlowe's government death benefit. The first photo shows Howard Monument Works in 1929 with Lerlowe's Puppy out front.

 Howard sold the Monument Co. to Charles &amp; Ester Wagner in 1960 with the promise to keep Lerlowe's Puppy. The second photo shows the newly-remodeled Wagner Memorial building in 1960 with Lerlowe's Puppy still out front. 

Dale Evans bought the business in 1981. In 2009, after being outside for 100 years, Dale decided to bring the quickly-eroding puppy indoors to help preserve him. The third photo shows Lerlowe's Puppy today in his historical corner at Wagners. 

The fourth photo shows Wagner Memorial today, still at 202 N. Maple, with the business being 136 years old. It is now owned by Wilbert Funeral Services out of Overland Park with Dale Evans serving as manager.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 10

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southeast corner of Avenue B and Main Streets.

In 1898, it became apparent that Reno County needed a new and larger courthouse. Bonds were passed in 1899 and 200 S. Main was selected for the location. 

Architect D.T. Depry of Hutch was selected to design it. The cornerstone was laid on Aug. 2 of 1900. It took almost a year for construction at a final cost of $54,000.

It opened June 25, 1901. The first photo shows the courthouse finished with the jail immediately behind it at 15 E. Ave. B. 

Everything went along fine until 1924 when the courthouse started developing large cracks in the brick and limestone walls due to settling.

It was decided that the settling was being caused by the Carey Salt brine plant south of the courthouse. The courthouse was abandoned in 1927 and offices were scattered around the city until a replacement courthouse was built. 

After the property was cleared, Dillons purchased it and built a new Dillons Food Market #1 in 1933. The second photo shows that store about 1950. This store was here from 1934 to 1979. 

In 1981, Dillons worked a deal with The Salvation Army to open a thrift store in the old building. The third photo shows the 200 S. Main property today, still housing The Salvation Army Thrift Store, overseen by Maj. Paul James from their home at 700 N. Walnut.

 </figure>STEVE HARMON Hutch Post ContributorToday's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southeast corner of Avenue B and Main Streets.In 1898, it became apparent that Reno County needed a new and larger courthouse. Bonds were passed in 1899 and 200 S. Main was selected for the location. Architect D.T. Depry of Hutch was selected to design it. The cornerstone was laid on Aug. 2 of 1900. It took almost a year for construction at a final cost of $54,000.It opened June 25, 1901. The first photo shows the courthouse finished with the jail immediately behind it at 15 E. Ave. B. <figure>

 </figure>Everything went along fine until 1924 when the courthouse started developing large cracks in the brick and limestone walls due to settling.It was decided that the settling was being caused by the Carey Salt brine plant south of the courthouse. The courthouse was abandoned in 1927 and offices were scattered around the city until a replacement courthouse was built. After the property was cleared, Dillons purchased it and built a new Dillons Food Market #1 in 1933. The second photo shows that store about 1950. This store was here from 1934 to 1979. <figure>

 </figure>In 1981, Dillons worked a deal with The Salvation Army to open a thrift store in the old building. The third photo shows the 200 S. Main property today, still housing The Salvation Army Thrift Store, overseen by Maj. Paul James from their home at 700 N. Walnut.<figure>

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 9

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the unit block of East Avenue B on the south side. The year is 1887, Hutchinson is growing quickly and so is crime. 

On May 23, 1887, a special election was held and passed to build a new jail. Hopkins &amp; Holland Architects of Topeka was selected to design it. The Reno County Jail was completed on March 22, 1888. 

The first photo shows the building at opening, taken by Glines.

Each sheriff and their families lived in this building, with the sheriff's wife acting as the matron. 

The second photo shows Sheriff John W. Jones, his family and his deputies out front in 1892 (from Jim Potter).

In 1900, the third Reno County Courthouse was built just to the west of the jail. 

This courthouse began having some structural problems and had to be replaced in 1930.

In 1931, the new courthouse at 206 W. 1st was opened and the Reno County Jail was moved there. 

In 1934, a new police and fire station was built across the street at 16 E. Ave B — that became the city jail. The old jail was then razed and the City of Turon took a section of the old jail for its use. 

In 1935, a storage warehouse was built on the old 15 E. Ave. B property. 

In 1985, Russell Johnston purchased this building and remodeled it to house his fledgling new ACS business. 

The third photo shows the property at 15 E. Ave B today, still ACS (Applied Computer Services). ACS does printing and direct mailing. It is still owned by Russell Johnston. The business has been at this location for 38 years.

 </figure>STEVE HARMON Hutch Post ContributorToday's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the Unit Block of East 1st Avenue on the south side to the P &amp; O Garage, opened as the Painter &amp; Oliphant Motor Co. in March of 1914 at 25 E. 1st Ave. They were the distributor for the Mitchell-Lewis, Oakland and Krit auto lines. The first photo shows their complete line of all their autos for the 1915 model year. This includes a Model M Grant, an Oakland Speedster, a Krit Touring Car, an Oakland Model 37 touring car, an Oakland Model 49 more expensive car, and two larger Mitchell's.<figure>

 </figure>In 1917, this facility was purchased by the Arnold Motor Co. of Wichita and became a Hutchinson outlet managed by J.L. Bascom. They sold Marmon and Dodge Brothers autos. A second and third story was added to this building and, in 1928, Montgomery Ward &amp; Co. opened here. In 1934, Montgomery Ward moved to a Main Street location and this became its warehouse. In 1950, The Great American Life Ins. Co. moved here from 102 S. Walnut with Frank Hadden as the office president. The second photo shows this company in 1970. In the 1980s, it had a false front on the building. <figure>

 </figure>Great American ceased to have an office here in 1993. Donna Brigman had her art studios here from 2000 to 2008. In 2008, Brad Easter purchased the building for his Pools Plus business. The third photo shows the 21-23 East 1st location today, still Pools Plus, with the business being run by Jake Easter. Enjoy!<figure>
