KANSAS CITY, KAN. – A Kansas man was sentenced to 36 months in prison for tax fraud and ordered to pay $40 million in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service, according to the United State's Attorney.

In November 2021, Scott Tucker, 59, of Leawood pleaded guilty to one count of filing a false or fraudulent tax return. According to court documents, Tucker owned a professional auto racing business called Level 5 Sports. On a 1040-tax return in 2010, Tucker reported that Level 5 had approximately $18,251,000 in gross receipts and approximately $17,514,000 in expenses. 

Tucker admitted in a plea agreement Level 5 never operated as an intended for-profit business, and he admitted to submitting false information on the 1040 form to try to disguise the amount of tax due and owing.

A federal judge ordered Tucker’s 36-month prison sentence to be served concurrent with a previous conviction in the Southern District of New York. In 2018, Tucker was sentenced to 200 months in prison for operating a nationwide $3.5 billion internet payday lending enterprise that systematically evaded New York state laws.

“Taxes are due on all earned income, even income earned by ripping people off,” said Special Agent in Charge Tyler Hatcher, IRS Criminal Investigation. “IRS-CI will always pursue the interests of the public. Mr. Tucker spent decades defrauding others through payday lending schemes and now a $40 million tax bill is due. In addition to the time he’s already serving, he’s now being held accountable for cheating the U.S. government and honest taxpayers.”

Former Kan. race team owner ordered to pay $40M for tax evasion

TOPEKA—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas teen for alleged threat to her school.

Just after 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, USD 501-Topeka school administration place Chase Middle School, 2250 NE State Street, into a lock down due to receiving a credible threat to the school, according to police Lt. Manuel Munoz.

School officials contacted the Topeka Police Department who worked with Campus Police and USD 501 Administrators to investigate further. 

Detectives took a 14-year-old student into custody from Chase Middle School and transported her to LEC for further questioning.

At the conclusion of the investigation, police transported the girl to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Criminal Threat, according to Munoz.

WASHINGTON (AP) — It’s time for America to stop letting the coronavirus “dictate how we live,” President Joe Biden’s White House declared Wednesday, outlining a strategy to allow people to return to many normal activities safely after two years of pandemic disruptions.

One highlight is a new “test to treat” plan to provide free antiviral pills at pharmacies to people who test positive for the virus.

<a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/National-COVID-19-Preparedness-Plan.pdf" target="_blank">The 90-page National COVID-19 Preparedness Plan</a>&nbsp;spells out initiatives and investments to continue to drive down serious illness and deaths from the virus, while preparing for potential new variants and providing employers and schools the resources to remain open.

“We know how to keep our businesses and our schools open with the tools that we have at our disposal,” said White House COVID-19 coordinator Jeff Zients.

Meanwhile, 140 million Americans, or 43% have now had COVID, according to a&nbsp;<a href="https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#national-lab" target="_blank">new assessment from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention</a>. That estimate comes from a surveillance program that tested nearly 72,000 blood samples that were sent to commercial labs from late December to late January. The samples were checked for antibodies from infection, and were distinguishable from antibodies that came from vaccination.

More than 947,000 people in the U.S. have died from the virus according to the CDC.

Wednesday’s White House announcement follows Biden’s Tuesday night&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-state-of-the-union-4d6eb9fed9a46bb4efb63ea4e015725c">State of the Union speech</a>, in which he pointed to progress against the pandemic since last year, with a dramatic reduction in cases, along with readily available vaccines and the likelihood of new tests and therapeutics soon becoming more accessible.

“This plan lays out the roadmap to help us fight COVID-19 in the future as we move America from crisis to a time when COVID-19 does not disrupt our daily lives and is something we prevent, protect against, and treat,” the White House said. “We are not going to just ‘live with COVID.’ Because of our work, we are no longer going to let COVID-19 dictate how we live.”

That tracked Biden’s speech statement, “Tonight, I can say we are moving forward safely, back to more normal routines. It’s time for Americans to get back to work and fill our great downtowns again.”

COVID-19 cases have fallen to their lowest level since last summer in recent weeks, after a winter spike from the highly transmissible omicron variant. Deaths, though, which lag cases by weeks, are still elevated, with an average of nearly 1,700 people dying in the U.S. each day. Officials emphasize that most instances of serious illnesses and death in the U.S. occur among those who are unvaccinated or who have not received a booster dose of vaccine.

The White House’s strategy comes days after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/coronavirus-pandemic-science-health-centers-for-disease-control-and-prevention-87d7bdc811ba6521e32017072d5ea180">the CDC loosened its guidance for when face masks should be worn&nbsp;</a>in public indoor settings, placing more emphasis on local capacity to treat serious disease than overall case counts. Now more than 70% of the country can safely remove masks indoors, the CDC says, and the percentage is expected to grow as cases continue to decline.

While most states and localities moved to relax their mask requirements even before the CDC change, many have kept mandates in place for schools, and the federal government continues to require face masks on public transportation, including airplanes. The federal mandate is to expire on March 18, and health officials did not provide any indication whether it would be extended.

Meanwhile, businesses across the country are struggling to navigate employees’ lingering concerns about COVID-19 and desire for the flexibility of working from home. Many companies’ would like to get workers back into offices.

A key component of the administration’s plan to convince American that it is safe to resume normal activities is the increasing availability of an antiviral pill from Pfizer that has been shown to reduce the risk of hospitalization from COVID-19 by 90%. By the end of the month, the administration says, 1 million pills will be available, with double that ready for use in April.

A White House official said the “test-to-treat” plan would initially roll out in hundreds of pharmacies across the country, including CVS, Walgreens, and Kroger locations, and would soon expand beyond that. Those who test positive at the sites would be able to obtain the antiviral pills for quick use, dramatically reducing the risk of bad outcomes.

One possible problem: The test-to-treat plan drew early concern from some pharmacists. Anne Burns, a vice president with the American Pharmacists Association, said pharmacies across the country have struggled with staffing issues in recent months. Pharmacists already doling out vaccines, prescriptions and health advice are worried about the extra time needed if they add more COVID-19 testing and treating.

“There’s just a lot of considerations that go into this,” she said. “It takes far longer than it takes to dispense most normal prescriptions.”

The administration said it also stands ready to rapidly administer millions of vaccine doses for children under 5 once the vaccines are approved by federal regulators. While there had been hope for the first shots to be authorized last month, Pfizer is now waiting on the results of a study including a third dose of the vaccine for that age group, and that will likely delay approval until April.

As part of the new strategy, the administration is calling on Congress to reinstitute tax credits for businesses that provide paid sick leave for employees who are sick with COVID-19. The White House is also asking Congress for additional funding to invest in new COVID-19 drugs, including research into the development of pan-coronavirus vaccines that would prevent against multiple strains and even several different types of viruses.

Meanwhile, federal officials emphasized they have greatly improved the public health system’s capacity to identify and track any potential new variants, with new investments in surveillance testing and genomic sequencing. Zients said the administration believes that if needed, it can authorize, produce and deliver new vaccines and treatments “in just 100 days rather than in many months or years.”

Biden, in his remarks Tuesday night, said that in addition to starting the new antiviral initiative, his administration would allow people in the U.S. to order another round of free tests from the government. He said that starting next week, the administration would make available four more free tests to U.S. households through COVIDTests.gov, which has sent more than 270 million to nearly 70 million households since it launched in mid-January.

Juan Gallego, a 58-year-old resident of Chelsea, Massachusetts, a majority Latino city north of Boston that was one of the state’s hardest hit during the pandemic, says Biden’s comments were appropriate, given how far the nation has come over the plast two years.

“Before, we didn’t know how to treat it. We were all paranoid, we didn’t know what to do,” he said of the virus. “Now we know, with all the experience, all we’ve done with the vaccines and new treatments.”

Gallego, a real estate agent who during the worst of the pandemic helped make face masks and deliver groceries and other essentials to quarantined families throughout Chelsea, said safety habits won’t quickly fade, especially in cities like his that took the brunt of the pain.

Many along Chelsea’s bustling main street and even children in local schools have continued to mask up, although a statewide mask mandate in classrooms was lifted this week, he said.

“He sent a message of hope, not desperation,” Gallego said of Biden. “We are in a much better place. And he’s right.”

White House unveils new 'test to treat' COVID-19 plan

he Federal Trade Commission, jointly with the Department of Justice 
and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, have sued a New York-based 
marketer of herbal tea, seeking to permanently block deceptive ads that 
claim its Earth Tea is clinically proven to treat, cure, and prevent 
COVID-19. The FTC also is seeking to impose civil penalties on the 
defendants behind Earth Tea under the COVID-19 Consumer Protection Act.

The complaint announced today names as defendants Brooklyn-based B4B 
Earth Tea LLC, B4B Corp., and its owner, Andrew Martin (“Busta”) 
Sinclair.

“Without any scientific evidence, the defendants claimed that 
drinking their herbal tea is more effective in preventing COVID-19 than 
approved vaccines, and cures anyone who has gotten ill within 24 hours,”
 said Samuel Levine, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer 
Protection. “In bringing this matter with our partners at the Department
 of Justice and the Food and Drug Administration, the Commission 
continues its commitment to using every tool available to stop and deter
 those who would treat the pandemic as opportunity to peddle bogus 
treatments.”

“The Department of Justice will not tolerate individuals or companies
 seeking to profit from the COVID-19 public health emergency by 
unlawfully advertising unproven products,” said Principal Deputy 
Assistant Attorney General Brian M. Boynton, head of the Department of 
Justice’s Civil Division. “The Department is committed to protecting 
consumers and enforcing the COVID-19 Consumer Protection Act and the 
FDCA against those who unlawfully market unproven COVID-19 treatments.”

“Products like this may delay patients from seeking proven treatments
 from their health care provider. Preying on patients’ vulnerabilities 
during the COVID-19 pandemic is unacceptable,” said Judy McMeekin, 
Pharm.D., FDA’s Associate Commissioner for Regulatory Affairs. “The FDA 
will continue to actively monitor the U.S. market for any companies or 
individuals falsely marketing products with claims it prevents or treats
 COVID-19, and will take actions against those who violate the law and 
endanger patients.”

“COVID-19 has tragically claimed nearly one million lives in this 
country and close to six million lives worldwide,” stated United States 
Attorney Breon Peace. “Unfortunately, there are too many people who are 
taking advantage of this crisis by pushing alleged treatment products 
that are nothing more than snake oil. We will not tolerate attempts to 
make a dishonest dollar while putting our communities at risk during a 
pandemic.”

According to the <a href="https://www.ftc.gov/system/files/documents/cases/us_v._b4b_earth_tea_complaint_22cv1159.pdf">joint agency complaint</a>,
 Sinclair and the two companies he owns and operates sell Earth Tea for 
$60 per 16-ounce bottle to consumers nationwide via social media and the
 Internet. Since at least April 2020, the complaint alleges, on their 
own websites and through social media posts and videos on Facebook, 
Instagram, Twitter TikTok, and YouTube, Sinclair, and his companies have
 misrepresented that Earth Tea prevents or treats COVID-19 and falsely 
claimed to have evidence of its efficacy. The defendants say they have 
anecdotal evidence from customers to support the claims, but there are 
currently no published reports or any well-controlled scientific studies
 or research indicating that Earth Tea can either prevent or treat 
COVID-19.

Among other things, the ads for Earth Tea claim:

Earth Tea’s ads also include unsupported claims such as: 1) 
“Vaccines trial shows preventing hospitalization is 85%-96% while so far
 Earth Tea Extra Strength is 100% we have helped people who are 
vaccinated;” 2) “No one who was positive and used Earth Tea went to the 
hospital;” and 3) comparing a vial of vaccine with a bottle of Earth 
Tea, “Which one is 100% effective with 0 side effects…#COVID19 Trial 
Report Is The Answer Not What Leaders Want…Compare Both.” The ads also 
falsely claim the Earth Tea is clinically proven to cure COVID-19 in 48 
hours. In at least one tweet, the defendants claimed the cure would only
 take 24 hours.

The defendants behind Earth Tea cite one 15-person study conducted in
 India to support their health claims for Earth Tea, but the study has a
 small sample size, no control group, and the results were never 
published in a recognized scientific journal. The results do not rise to
 the level of providing “competent and reliable scientific evidence” to 
support the health claims, according to the complaint.

The Commission vote to refer the civil penalty complaint to the DOJ 
for filing was 4-0. The Department of Justice filed the complaint on 
behalf of the Commission in the U.S. District Court for
 Eastern District of New York. In addition to the violations alleged by 
the FTC, the complaint includes charges by the FDA alleging violations 
of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

anecdotal evidence from customers to support the claims, but there are 
currently no published reports or any well-controlled scientific studies
 or research indicating that Earth Tea can either prevent or treat 
COVID-19.Among other things, the ads for Earth Tea claim:<ul>
 <li>“B4B Corp is sharing a COVID-19 Update…Earth Tea works!! The all
 natural instant immune booster clinical trails proves its [sic] 
effective against Covid19;” and</li><li>“Our Clinical Trial was successful. So successful we are offering a
 Money Back Guarantee against covid-19 if 2 bottles do not get you 
negative you will get your money back.”</li>
 </ul>Earth Tea’s ads also include unsupported claims such as: 1) 
“Vaccines trial shows preventing hospitalization is 85%-96% while so far
 Earth Tea Extra Strength is 100% we have helped people who are 
vaccinated;” 2) “No one who was positive and used Earth Tea went to the 
hospital;” and 3) comparing a vial of vaccine with a bottle of Earth 
Tea, “Which one is 100% effective with 0 side effects…#COVID19 Trial 
Report Is The Answer Not What Leaders Want…Compare Both.” The ads also 
falsely claim the Earth Tea is clinically proven to cure COVID-19 in 48 
hours. In at least one tweet, the defendants claimed the cure would only
 take 24 hours.The defendants behind Earth Tea cite one 15-person study conducted in
 India to support their health claims for Earth Tea, but the study has a
 small sample size, no control group, and the results were never 
published in a recognized scientific journal. The results do not rise to
 the level of providing “competent and reliable scientific evidence” to 
support the health claims, according to the complaint.The Commission vote to refer the civil penalty complaint to the DOJ 
for filing was 4-0. The Department of Justice filed the complaint on 
behalf of the Commission in the U.S. District Court for
 Eastern District of New York. In addition to the violations alleged by 
the FTC, the complaint includes charges by the FDA alleging violations 
of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

Feds take action to stop COVID treatment claims by herbal tea maker

BONNER SPRINGS, Kan. (AP) — A 20-year-old suspect in crimes on both sides of the state line in the Kansas City metro area is in custody after a standoff in Kansas. 

Bonner Springs police say Yucasante Oropreza was arrested without incident Wednesday. KMBC-TV reports Oropeza was a suspect in a shooting in Kansas City, Kansas, when police began chasing his vehicle on Jan. 8. 

The chase was suspended when Oropeza crossed into Kansas City, Missouri. Police say he ran a red light and hit a car driven by 47-year-old Dahir Abdi, of Olathe, who died at the scene. Oropreza ran from the scene. Law enforcement tracked him to a home in Bonner Springs, where he surrendered after a standoff

GREELEY, Kan. (AP) — Fire officials are investigating after two adults and a child were found dead in house fire in eastern Kansas. Anderson County Sheriff Veron Valentine said the fire was reported early Wednesday in Greeley.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper says in a statement that he drew his pistol on a Kansas legislator stopped for speeding when the lawmaker abruptly got out of his car holding his cellphone. 

The trooper’s affidavit was released Wednesday and provides details about the Nov. 27 arrest in Lawrence of Democratic state Rep. Aaron Coleman, of Kansas City. 

Coleman is charged in Douglas County District Court with speeding and failing to yield to an emergency vehicle and has a hearing set for April 15. Master Trooper Michael Hamilton said in his affidavit that Coleman was speeding west on Interstate 70, left the highway and stopped in a parking area.

Trooper drew gun on Kansas lawmaker after stop for speeding

A Dodge City man was arrested late Tuesday night after he allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend's west Salina residence and threatened to kill her and her family.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that officers were sent to the 1600 block of Beverly Drive at approximately 11:30 p.m. after multiple calls were received concerning a disturbance that involved a woman running away from a man.

A 47-year-old woman told police that she was cooking dinner when her ex-boyfriend, identified as Zachary Mayarda, 40, of Dodge City, came through the front door and threatened to kill her and her family, Forrester said.

The woman was able to escape the residence through the front door. A witness reported seeing Mayarda chasing the woman down the street, Forrester said.

Mayarda was located back at the residence and was arrested on the following requested charges of Aggravated burglary and Criminal threat.

TOPEKA — Bipartisan majorities in
 the Kansas Senate voted Wednesday to confirm three nominees to the 
Kansas Board of Regents recommended by Gov. Laura Kelly.

The process of considering nominations of former BNSF Railway 
executive Carl Ice, retired school superintendent Cynthia Lane and 
former banker and state Sen. Wint Winter took on an unusually high level
 of political intrigue as some GOP lawmakers sought to derail Kelly’s 
picks of Lane and Winter to the state board with oversight of more than 
30 public universities, community colleges and technical colleges.

The Senate Education Committee conducted an extensive inquiry into 
the nominees despite a unanimous vote of support last year by the 
interim Senate Confirmation Committee.

Sen. Molly Baumgardner, a Louisburg Republican and chairwoman of the 
Senate Education Committee, said evidence raised in the extended process
 resulted in a recommendation Ice be confirmed. She said the other 
nominees — Winter and Lane — were forwarded to the Senate without a 
recommendation because some lawmakers were convinced the nominees hadn’t
 been sufficiently transparent in answers to written and oral questions.

“It is up to this body to assure the nomination process and the confirmation process isn’t perfunctory,” Baumgardner said.

Before the vote, Sen. Marci Francisco, D-Lawrence, delivered a brief speech endorsing each of the governor’s nominees.

Ice won unanimous support from the Senate with a 38-0 vote on 
confirmation. The margin for Winter was 24-9, while Lane was confirmed 
23-11.

During the Senate committee hearings, questions were raised by GOP 
lawmakers about political allegiances of people selected by the 
Democratic governor. They quizzed Winter about his opposition to 
re-election of then-Gov. Sam Brownback, while Lane was questioned about 
her involvement in a school-finance lawsuit that led to a finding the 
Legislature’s approach to funding K-12 public schools was 
unconstitutional.

The political dimension of the Senate’s consideration of the nominees
 was unusual given that three of six members of the Board of Regents, 
aside from Winter, previously served in the Legislature.

In addition, Brownback selected Helen Van Etten, who served as 
Republican National Committeewoman, to serve on the board in 2013 at the
 same time she served in that high-level Republican Party position.

Wood said firefighters found the man dead after extinguishing the blaze. It wasn't clear if the man died from the fire or a medical problem. Fire officials are warning Kansans to reconsider burning in the current warm and extremely dry conditions. 

The National Weather Service had issued an advisory for a very high fire danger on Tuesday because of the conditions.

Just after 3p.m. on Tuesday, two off-duty Wichita Police officers were working at a business in the 500 block of East Pawnee, according to Officer Charley Davidson.&nbsp; They were contacted by a woman who reported her grey Pontiac Grand Prix being stolen from the parking lot and her 11-month-old child being in the vehicle.

Officers quickly responded and began circulating.&nbsp; Officers located the vehicle abandoned in a parking lot in the 1400 block of South Emporia.&nbsp; The child was also inside, unharmed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Through the investigation, police learned of Robertson’s involvement in the theft.&nbsp; Robertson is currently on parole through the Kansas Department of Corrections. He has over twenty previous convictions that include theft,  aggravated burglary, aggravated battery, DUI, criminal threat, obstruction aggravated failure to appear and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Senate passes Marshall's bill to stop vaxx mandate for healthcare workers

WICHITA, Kansas — Debate over a video about white privilege 
dominated the Derby school board meeting this week, with one board 
member linking the video to critical race theory and others saying they 
support its message and the principal who shared it.

More than 100
 people packed into the board chambers and an overflow room for Monday’s
 meeting. Many wore green “Team Hamblin” T-shirts in support of Derby 
High Principal Tim Hamblin.

Hamblin spoke publicly for the first time since the controversy began, saying he <a href="https://www.kmuw.org/education/2022-02-20/fallout-from-video-about-white-privilege-roils-derby-school-district" target="_blank">shared the video with teachers</a> in January after learning about race-based attacks on social media against two Black students.

“‘See
 something, say something.’ It’s on the Derby homepage. It’s in every 
building in this district,” Hamblin said. “I was trying to teach kids 
how they can help others.”

Hamblin <a href="https://www.kmuw.org/2022-02-09/a-kansas-principal-shared-a-video-about-speaking-up-against-racism-he-was-ordered-to-apologize" target="_blank">emailed his staff last month</a>
 to apologize for showing the video. He said an anonymous employee had 
complained to a school board member that the video was offensive and 
created a hostile work environment.

The <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wf9QBnPK6Yg" target="_blank">video features Black author Joy DeGruy</a>
 relating a story about being treated differently at a store because of 
her race. A lighter-skinned family member “used her white privilege and …
 pointed out the injustice,” DeGruy says in the video.

School board member Andy Watkins emailed Superintendent Heather Bohaty about the video on Feb. 6.

“I really believe the community/patrons of our district would not be 
OK with this video,” Watkins said in the email. He said students and 
teachers who watched it should get an apology or explanation.

“Do 
we need some kind of policy which talks more about disparaging one race 
over another (which seems like common sense but may be needed to prevent
 a video like this in the future)?” Watkins wrote in the email.

“I
 really need to understand your position on this video, as I think it 
dictates what possible next steps look like and further questions.”

Board members were <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/12LquYeN0_WcUae9m7_kI0dCRB0ZhEcsX/view" target="_blank">scheduled to review Bohaty’s contract</a> the following day.

On
 Monday, Watkins said he raised concerns about the video because he 
thinks terminology used in it “has a direct tie to critical race 
theory,” and he was concerned about “making this terminology … the 
norm.”

Critical race theory is not taught in Kansas K-12 schools, 
but its core idea holds that racism is embedded in American culture and 
policies. Some critics say conversations about white privilege can make 
people feel uncomfortable and accelerate racial conflict.

Watkins 
said he did not order Hamblin to apologize. But Hamblin said he viewed 
board members as “the ultimate formal authority” in the district.

“This
 is a dumb analogy, but if my father asked me to mow the lawn, I never 
really thought I had a choice,” Hamblin said. “I respected his formal 
authority, and it was an expectation that I would do so.”

Bohaty, 
the superintendent, drew loud applause from the audience Monday when she
 said she supported Hamblin’s decision to show the video.

“I do 
not believe there was a communication breakdown. I have clearly stated …
 that an apology should not be requested from DHS administration,” 
Bohaty said.

“We have to do better. We must have an environment where conversations can occur, and every student feels safe in our school.”

Board
 president Michael Blankenship thanked Bohaty “for finally taking a 
stance on the video.” Then added, “Unfortunately, it’s about a month 
late.”

Several Derby residents addressed the school board in support of Hamblin.

“We
 live in a dangerous time when the sensibilities of the oppressors and 
their apologists are given more consideration than the experiences of 
true victims,” said Karen Runyon, a parent and school district employee.

“Kudos
 to Mr. Hamblin for attempting to deal with a complex and difficult 
issue in a productive way, and shame on those who requested an apology 
for his efforts.”

Cheryl Bannon, a former Derby City Council 
member, motioned to the crowd in attendance. “I represented this 
community for 17 years, and I can guarantee you, as shown by this sea of
 green, most of the community would not have a problem with that video.”

Sherilyn Ray, a Derby High graduate who is Black, said racism is a problem in the district and needs to be addressed.

“If
 every single person that was voted into a position … within this school
 district doesn't stand up and do something different, you're all 
accountable for that,” she said. “If you stand up and take a position … 
be on the right side, and that's on the side of the kids that are 
suffering.”

Residents pack board meeting to support Kan. principal's lesson on 'white privilege'

WICHITA — A U.S. House select committee investigating the Jan.
 6 attack on the Capitol has subpoenaed Phill Kline, a former Kansas 
attorney general.

According to the subpoena, Kline convened a 
meeting between then-President Donald Trump and 300 state lawmakers in 
an attempt to “disseminate purported evidence of election fraud” and 
ultimately overturn the 2020 election.

The subpoena says Kline 
encouraged the legislators to sign a letter urging former Vice President
 Mike Pence to delay the electoral certification on Jan. 6, 2021.

Kline, a Republican who served as Kansas attorney general from 2003 to 2007, was one of <a href="https://january6th.house.gov/news/press-releases/select-committee-demands-information-witnesses-who-promoted-unsupported-claims" target="_blank">six people subpoenaed by the committee</a> on Tuesday. The subpoenas seek documents and testimony from attorneys who worked on behalf of Trump.

Kline has until March 15 to produce documents and was ordered to appear for a deposition on March 25.

Kline founded a group called <a href="https://www.theamistadproject.org/" target="_blank">The Amistad Project</a>, which bills itself as “the nation’s leading election integrity watchdog.” Recent news reports reveal that the group was <a href="https://www.kcur.org/news/2022-01-24/former-kansas-attorney-general-phill-kline-led-effort-to-promote-fake-trump-electors-in-2020" target="_blank">active in promoting fake slates of pro-Trump electors</a> in 2020.

The
 new subpoenas reflect the Jan. 6 committee’s focus on Trump’s efforts 
to stop President Joe Biden’s certification, including plans to send 
slates of electors to return Trump to office.

“The select 
committee is seeking information about attempts to disrupt or delay the 
certification of electoral votes and any efforts to corruptly change the
 outcome of the 2020 election,” Rep. Bennie Thompson, a Mississippi 
Democrat and chairman of the panel, said in a statement.

“The six 
individuals we’ve subpoenaed today all have knowledge related to those 
matters and will help the select committee better understand all the 
various strategies employed to potentially affect the outcome of the 
election,” Thompson said.

 6 attack on the Capitol has subpoenaed Phill Kline, a former Kansas 
attorney general.According to the subpoena, Kline convened a 
meeting between then-President Donald Trump and 300 state lawmakers in 
an attempt to “disseminate purported evidence of election fraud” and 
ultimately overturn the 2020 election.The subpoena says Kline 
encouraged the legislators to sign a letter urging former Vice President
 Mike Pence to delay the electoral certification on Jan. 6, 2021.Kline, a Republican who served as Kansas attorney general from 2003 to 2007, was one of <a href="https://january6th.house.gov/news/press-releases/select-committee-demands-information-witnesses-who-promoted-unsupported-claims" target="_blank">six people subpoenaed by the committee</a> on Tuesday. The subpoenas seek documents and testimony from attorneys who worked on behalf of Trump.Kline has until March 15 to produce documents and was ordered to appear for a deposition on March 25.Kline founded a group called <a href="https://www.theamistadproject.org/" target="_blank">The Amistad Project</a>, which bills itself as “the nation’s leading election integrity watchdog.” Recent news reports reveal that the group was <a href="https://www.kcur.org/news/2022-01-24/former-kansas-attorney-general-phill-kline-led-effort-to-promote-fake-trump-electors-in-2020" target="_blank">active in promoting fake slates of pro-Trump electors</a> in 2020.The
 new subpoenas reflect the Jan. 6 committee’s focus on Trump’s efforts 
to stop President Joe Biden’s certification, including plans to send 
slates of electors to return Trump to office.“The select 
committee is seeking information about attempts to disrupt or delay the 
certification of electoral votes and any efforts to corruptly change the
 outcome of the 2020 election,” Rep. Bennie Thompson, a Mississippi 
Democrat and chairman of the panel, said in a statement.“The six 
individuals we’ve subpoenaed today all have knowledge related to those 
matters and will help the select committee better understand all the 
various strategies employed to potentially affect the outcome of the

Former Kansas AG Phill Kline subpoenaed by Jan. 6 committee

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A community task force is calling for the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate the death of a Black teenager who was restrained facedown for more than 30 minutes at a Kansas juvenile detention center.

Sedgwick County Commission Chairman David Dennis said last month that he was told by county Sheriff Jeff Easter that the&nbsp;FBI&nbsp;requested all information regarding the death of 17-year-old Cedric Lofton. The FBI is part of the Justice Department.

But the task force wasn’t certain about the status of the investigation because its members only knew about it secondhand and they wanted to add their voices to those asking, said member Jazmine Rogers, an organizer with the Wichita-based youth civil rights group Progeny.

Lofton’s foster father called authorities in September seeking help because the teenager was hallucinating. Police initially tried to convince him to go to a mental health facility, but body camera video shows him refusing to go and then resisting when officers tried to force him.

Lofton then was taken to the Sedgwick County Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center, where he had to be resuscitated after he was held facedown. He died two days later.

The county prosecutor declined to file charges in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/wichita-kansas-a51f619b8b196987e74b046ac399680c">January</a>, citing the state’s stand-your-ground law self defense law.

The state reported 29 additional COVID-19 deaths for a total of 7,975.

A probable case is defined as a person with: a) presumptive lab evidence (antigen) or b) no lab testing but meeting clinical case criteria and is epi-linked. A person will be counted as a new surveillance case (e.g. reinfection) if they test positive for SARS-CoV-2 by a diagnostic test (i.e., molecular, antigen) and it has been greater than 90 days since the previous positive diagnostic test. In addition, a person with sequencing results identifying different SARS-CoV-2 lineages regardless of the time since the previous specimen sequenced will be counted as a new surveillance case.&nbsp;

KDHE reports 29 additional COVID-19 deaths

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — A suspect in the fatal shooting of a North Carolina bus driver has been arrested in Kansas, police announced Tuesday.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said in a news release that detectives found Darian Dru Thavychith, 21, through a collaboration with state police, the FBI and the Shawnee, Kansas, Police Department. Thavychith was arrested without incident at a gas station in Shawnee, according to police there.

Thavychith is charged with murder and shooting into occupied property in the death of Charlotte Area Transit System bus driver Ethan Rivera last month, police said. He is in the Johnson County, Kansas, jail, Shawnee police records show. At a court hearing Tuesday, Thavychith agreed to be extradited to Charlotte.

Officers responding to a call about a shooting on Feb. 11 found a bus off the road and the bus driver shot, police said. Rivera was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and police said he died the next day. The four passengers on the bus at the time were not hurt, police said.

 </figure>WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Two off-duty police officers in Wichita found a baby unharmed in the back seat of a car that had been stolen from a Walmart parking lot. Television station KAKE reports the theft happened Tuesday afternoon. The officers were off-duty and working at a business on Pawnee Street when they learned of the car theft with the 11-month-old baby still in the car's back seat. The pair began patrolling the area looking for the car and found it abandoned a short distance away with the baby still in the back seat. The suspect who stole the car is described as a white male in his 50s with brownish, blonde hair, some facial hair and he was wearing blue jeans and a checkered, flannel shirt, according to OffiCer Charley Davidson.
