LYON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal accident on the Kansas Turnpike have identified the victim.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Cadillac SRX driven by&nbsp;Sacha McNack, 31, Oklahoma City, was northbound on Interstate 335 near the Emporia exit just after noon Monday.

The SUV traveled onto the right shoulder. The driver overcorrected and lost control of the vehicle. The SUV traveled into the east ditch, struck a tree and caught fire.

EMS transported an 8-year-old Oklahoma City boy from the SUV to Children's Mercy.&nbsp; &nbsp;A 6-year-old girl and a 2-year-old boy both of Oklahoma City were transported to the hospital in Emporia.&nbsp; The 8-year-old was not in a child safety seat, according to the KHP.&nbsp; 

The KHP did not have information on whether McNack was properly restrained at the time of the accident.

American adults who haven’t yet gotten vaccinated against COVID-19 may soon get another choice, as advisers to the Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday backed a more traditional type of shot.

Next, the FDA must decide whether to authorize the vaccine made by latecomer Novavax, a protein vaccine that’s made with a more conventional technology than today’s U.S. options.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/covid-science-health-202fd25f335208c7cf77c81231dd9ce8">Novavax shots</a>&nbsp;are already used in Australia, Canada, parts of Europe and dozens of other countries. But U.S. clearance is a key hurdle for the Maryland-based company.

FDA’s vaccine chief Dr. Peter Marks said another choice in the U.S. may entice at least some vaccine holdouts -- whatever their reason -- to consider rolling up their sleeves.

“We do have a problem with vaccine uptake that is very serious in the United States,” Marks said. “Anything we can do to get people more comfortable to accept these potentially life-saving products is something that we feel we are compelled to do.”

If the FDA authorizes Novavax as the nation’s fourth vaccine, it’s not clear how widely it would be used -- at least right away. Only about 27 million U.S. adults remain unvaccinated. Eventually, Novavax hopes also to become a choice for the millions more who haven’t yet had a booster dose of today’s vaccines. The shots are used elsewhere as a booster, regardless of which vaccine people got originally.

Tuesday’s question: Do the benefits of two primary doses of the Novavax vaccine outweigh any risks? The FDA advisory panel voted that they do, by a 21-0 vote with one abstention.

Large studies in the U.S., Mexico and Britain found two doses of the Novavax vaccine were safe and about 90% effective at preventing symptomatic COVID-19. One complication: Those studies were done far earlier in the pandemic, well before more contagious coronavirus variants emerged -- including the omicron mutant and its relatives.

Novavax chief medical officer Dr. Filip Dubovsky said the company already has tested a booster dose -- and it revved up virus-fighting antibodies that could tackle that mutant.

This type of vaccine “we think generates a broad immune response against a broad array of variants,” he told the FDA advisory panel.

And while the trials showed generally people experienced only mild reactions such as injection-site pain or fatigue, the FDA did highlight a possible concern: six cases of heart inflammation, known as myocarditis, found among the 40,000 people who received the vaccine in studies.

Vaccines are coming under close scrutiny for the possibility of that heart inflammation after the Pfizer and Moderna shots were linked to that rare risk.

Novavax argued there were other potential causes for some of the cases in its trials. COVID-19, as well as other infections, also can cause heart inflammation. The company said more than 744,000 vaccinations in other countries so far support the shots’ safety.

The Novavax vaccine is made of copies of the spike protein that coats the coronavirus, packaged into nanoparticles that to the immune system resemble a virus. Then an immune-boosting ingredient, or adjuvant, that’s made from the bark of a South American tree is added that acts as a red flag to ensure those particles look suspicious enough to spark a strong immune response.

Protein vaccines have been used for years to prevent hepatitis B, shingles and other diseases.

That’s very different than the vaccines currently used in the U.S. The most widely used Pfizer and Moderna vaccines deliver genetic instructions for the body to produce its own copies of the spike protein. J&amp;J uses a cold virus to deliver those instructions.

Manufacturing problems held up Novavax’s vaccine but the company said those problems have been resolved. Novavax, a small biotech company, created the vaccine in its research lab, but the Serum Institute of India, the world’s largest vaccine maker, produces most of its shots including those slated for the U.S.

WASHINGTON&nbsp;– U.S. Senator Jerry Moran– the lead Republican on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science (CJS), and Related Agencies – along with 15 colleagues Tuesday called on U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland to investigate and work to prevent violence against pro-life organizations. 

After a draft opinion in the Supreme Court case&nbsp;Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization&nbsp;was leaked to the media, pro-life and religious organizations have been increasingly&nbsp;<a href="https://www.christianpost.com/news/churches-pro-life-offices-burned-vandalized-since-supreme-court-leak-list.html" target="_blank">vandalized</a>&nbsp;and damaged.

“We are deeply concerned that this trend will continue should the Supreme Court overturn Roe v. Wade in the coming weeks unless the Department of Justice, the FBI, and U.S. Attorneys’ Offices take a firm public stance and proactive response against these violent threats,”&nbsp;the senators wrote.

“The criminal acts perpetrated against those who oppose legalized abortion are a clear effort to intimidate or coerce individuals who hold pro-life values,”&nbsp;the senators wrote.&nbsp;“We call on the Department of Justice to take these actions seriously and work to prevent violence and, when such acts are perpetrated, investigate and prosecute them as appropriate.”&nbsp;

Most Republicans are skeptical about added pandemic funding. “I have a hard time believing that there’s not enough money and not enough flexibility already” to use it, said Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D.

Counterintuitively but unsurprisingly for the always perplexing Senate, one intractable puzzle stymying Democrats is immigration.

Senate Republicans are demanding a vote an amending the pandemic legislation with language retaining Trump-era curbs that, citing COVID-19, have made it easier to bar migrants from entering the U.S.

A federal judge has blocked Biden from ending those restrictions. Liberals want Congress to eliminate the clampdown, but moderate Democrats in both chambers facing tough reelections want to vote to retain it.

The result: Testy divisions between the Democrats’ two ideological factions, and knotty questions for party leaders about how to resolve them and push a pandemic package to passage.

Their task is compounded by disputes between House and Senate Democrats over why the COVID-19 battle remains unresolved.

Senate Democrats note a bipartisan $15.6 billion pandemic compromise was on the cusp of House passage in March until that chamber’s progressive Democrats rebelled against spending cuts to pay for it,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-ketanji-brown-jackson-biden-covid-health-1f6cd2e49607be0c6b9286bb038d1aef">derailing the money</a>. “We’re waiting for the House to send us something,” Schumer said last week.

House Democrats say even if they do, the biggest hurdle will still be the Senate, where 10 GOP votes will be required to reach that chamber’s usual 60-vote threshold for passage. They note that an April deal between Schumer and Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-ketanji-brown-jackson-biden-covid-health-1f6cd2e49607be0c6b9286bb038d1aef">$10 billion in COVID-19 money collapsed</a>&nbsp;after Republicans demanded the immigration vote.

“We want to get COVID-19 done, but the only impediment right now is the United States Senate,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., told reporters recently.

That’s left Republicans waiting for Democrats’ next move.

A detention memo filed by First Assistant U.S. Attorney Raj Parekh says she trained children how to use assault rifles and at least one witness saw one of her children — approximately 6 or 7 years old — holding a machine gun in the family’s home in Syria.

Prosecutors have also said Fluke-Ekren wanted to recruit operatives to attack a college campus in the U.S. and discussed a terrorist attack on a shopping mall. She told one witness that “she considered any attack that did not kill a large number of individuals to be a waste of resources,” according to an FBI affidavit.

A criminal complaint against Fluke-Ekren was filed under seal in 2019 but not made public until she was brought back to the U.S. to face charges.

At the end of the hearing, though, First Assistant U.S. Attorney Raj Parekh told the judge that he had been in contact with Ekren’s parents and her adult children, and all had said they wanted no contact with her.

The magistrate judge, Ivan Davis, said he had little ability to keep her from reaching out to her family from jail, but told Ekren he would take it into account at Thursday’s hearing if she contacted her family against their wishes.

Ekren, speaking in a soft-spoken voice and wearing an inmate jumpsuit and headscarf, said she understood the restriction. She also told the judge, in response to his question, that she preferred to be addressed as Ekren. The Justice Department used her full name, Allison Fluke-Ekren, when it announced charges against her Saturday.

Prosecutors say Ekren wanted to recruit operatives to attack a college campus in the U.S. and discussed the idea of attacking a shopping mall. Former Kan. woman admits leading Islamic State battalion

TOPEKA — Republican state Sen. 
Dennis Pyle filed paperwork to launch a campaign for Kansas governor and
 enter a race that features Attorney General Derek Schmidt and Gov. 
Laura Kelly.

Pyle, a Hiawatha farmer among the Senate’s conservative members, said
 he submitted documents Monday night. The filing deadline is Friday for 
the Aug. 2 primary election.

He would be the third Republican candidate for governor in 2022. In 
addition to Schmidt, Republican Arlyn Briggs of Kincaid is a GOP 
candidate.

Kelly is seeking reelection to a second term against Emmett resident Richard Karnowski, a Democrat.

Pyle, 61, has served in the Kansas Legislature for nearly 20 years. 
He was in the Kansas House from 2001 to 2003, but lost a race for 
reelection. He assuming a seat in the Kansas Senate in 2005. In 2020, he
 easily won reelection to his northeast Kansas seat in the Senate with 
more than 70% of the vote.

In 2018, Pyle entered a crowded GOP field in an attempt to replace 
retiring U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins. He finished fifth in the 2nd District’s
 Republican primary won by Steve Watkins, who served one term before 
ousted by U.S. Rep. Jake LaTurner.

In announcing his congressional candidacy four years ago, Pyle said 
“no matter how crowded the field, there is always room for a genuine, 
proven conservative who represents rural Kansas values.”

Pyle also challenged Jenkins in the Republican congressional primary 
in 2010. He lost to Jenkins, but earned about 43% of the vote.

GOP senator Pyle files to launch campaign for Kansas governor

SEDGWICK COUNTY—A Kansas man is going to prison for the death of his 4-month-old daughter in 2018.

On Monday, a judge sentenced 36-year-old Andrew Franklin of Haysville to serve more than 20-years in prison, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In April, Franklin pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of second-degree murder and child abuse in the death of B<a href="https://memorials.smithfamilymortuaries.com/brexley-franklin/3610588/service-details.php">rexley Grace</a> Franklin.&nbsp;&nbsp;Police say the baby girl died on Sept. 13, 2018, five days after she was admitted to a hospital suffering from a skull fracture, retinal hemorrhages and bruises to her jaw.

Franklin was&nbsp;initially charged&nbsp;with first-degree murder and two counts of child abuse.

Franklin has been in the Sedgwick County jail since his <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=38776">arrest in January 2019.</a>&nbsp;He has previous convictions for theft and burglary, according to the&nbsp;Kansas Department of Corrections.

FINNEY COUNTY&nbsp; —Law enforcement authorities are investigating numerous reports of Facebook Marketplace and other social media scams, according to a media release from Garden City Police.

Police offered several examples of the scams that include COVID-19 relief, rentals for sale and fundraisers to help people in need. 

In many incidents, the scammer will send a photo with their Driver’s License or another form of identification to gain the trust of the victim, express urgency to act, and convince the victim into switching to a third-party option for payment. 

A recent victim of an online marketplace scam reported to police of losing several thousands of dollars. 

Police urged the public to continue to be vigilant with your online marketplace shopping. If you think it is a scam or if  something seems too good to be true, then it probably is. 

Ask questions, do not give out your personal or financial information, and do your own research before you commit to anything. At the bare minimum, if you see something suspicious on any social media marketplace, report it as spam/fraud through that platform. 

If you have questions or believe you have been a victim of fraud, immediately report it to your bank and contact police.

Police in SW Kansas issue online marketplace scam alert

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) — Five young teenagers including two 13-year-olds who are charged in a Kansas man's shooting death pleaded not guilty in juvenile court to first-degree murder. Court documents say the teenagers pleaded Monday. 

Three of the suspects who pleaded Monday are 14-years-old. A hearing for a sixth 14-year-old scheduled for Monday was postponed to June 15. 

They are charged in the May 14 death of 19-year-old Marco Cardino of Smithville, Missouri. He was found dead in his car in an Olathe, Kansas, park. The Johnson County prosecutor is seeking to try the 14-year-olds as adults. Kansas law does not allow 13-year-olds to be tried as adults.

They are among six teenagers charged in juvenile court with first-degree murder in the death of 19-year-old Marco Cardino, of Smithville, Missouri.

The two other suspects are 13 and cannot be tried as adults under Kansas law.

Marco was found dead in his car with multiple gunshot wounds on March 14 in Black Bob Park in Olathe, Kansas.

Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe said the shooting occurred during a marijuana sale, The Kansas City Star&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article261596277.html">reported</a>.

“It follows a pattern we’ve seen with young adults and teenagers, where violence has occurred on sales of small amounts of marijuana,” Howe said. He did not specify who was buying and who was selling.

Howe filed motions this week to charge the four 14-year-olds — three males and one female — as adults. All the suspects are from Olathe.

Prosecutors have not released more details about the shooting but court records list aggravated battery and criminal discharge of a firearm as felonies that contributed to the murder charge.

Olathe Attorney Carl Cornwell, who represents one of the 14-year-olds, said he was surprised the prosecutors want to try his client as an adult.

"I’ve never had one this young where they are trying (to transfer the case to adult court),” he said.

The annual award is given to states that attract high-value investment projects that create a significant number of new jobs in their communities. Only five states have been awarded the Gold Shovel for 2022. Since the start of Governor Kelly’s Administration, Kansas has received nearly $8.8 billion in new business investments, created and retained nearly 43,000 jobs, and been home to 645 new economic development projects.

As the state’s lead economic development agency, the Department of Commerce works to help businesses and communities grow in Kansas. Commerce’s business recruitment team supported all business successes submitted for the Gold Shovel Award.

“Under Governor Kelly’s leadership, the Kansas economy has transformed into one of the most dominant states for economic development,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Commerce Secretary David Toland said. “Our aggressive approach to bringing new, quality jobs and investment to the state has led to back-to-back years of record-breaking success. A Kansas man faces requested theft, drug, and weapon charges after he allegedly was seen on surveillance video taking money from an arcade game.

On June 2, police were sent to The Alley, 115 E. Ash Street in Salina for the report of cash being stolen from a video game the day before, according to Police Captain Paul Forrester.

The manager told officers that the Dragon's Ascent video game keeps a total of how much money is taken in, but when he ran the report, the game was $500 short.

Video surveillance showed a man in a red hoodie at the game between 2-4 p.m. Wednesday. In the video, he is seen prying a panel open and removing cash. He then returned at 7 p.m. Wednesday and took more cash from the game, Forrester said.

A total of $500 was taken, he said. An employee who viewed the video identified the man as David Boeschling, 23, of Salina.

Forrester said that at approximately 5:40 p.m. Thursday, officers were once again sent to The Alley, as Boeschling had returned. By the time they arrived, Boeschling had left in a green Honda Civic.

Officers were able to locate the Civic in the 100 block of S. Ninth Street, and conducted a traffic stop. A K-9 was deployed to do an air sniff of the vehicle and indicated the presence of illegal drugs, Forrester said. During a subsequent search of the Civic, officers allegedly found marijuana, methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and a .38 caliber handgun.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden ordered emergency measures Monday to increase U.S. manufacturing of solar panels and declared a two-year tariff exemption on panels from Southeast Asia as he attempted to jumpstart an industry key to his climate change-fighting goals.

His invoking of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/virus-outbreak-donald-trump-politics-16bf293467703f6b4fceae5a7f272ab5">the Defense Production Act</a>&nbsp;and other executive actions comes amid complaints by industry groups that the solar sector is being slowed by supply chain problems due to an ongoing Commerce Department inquiry into possible trade violations involving&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/china-business-government-and-politics-1fdb0ef1dfea9c95a7efee767320b2b6">Chinese products</a>.

The Commerce Department announced in March that it was scrutinizing imports of solar panels from Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Cambodia, concerned that products from those countries are skirting U.S. anti-dumping rules that limit imports from China.

Solar energy companies gained ground in morning trading Monday on Wall Street.

White House officials said Biden’s actions aim to increase domestic production of solar panel parts, building installation materials, high-efficiency heat pumps and other components like cells used for clean-energy generated fuels. They called the tariff suspension affecting imports from Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Cambodia a bridge measure while other efforts increase domestic solar power production — even as the administration remains supportive of U.S. trade laws and the Commerce Department investigation.

The Commerce Department has defended its investigation.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/climate-biden-asia-environment-42a392471ac9dee06d6e643574c04860">Secretary Gina Raimondo told a Senate panel</a>&nbsp;in May that the solar inquiry is following a process set by law that doesn’t allow consideration of climate change, supply chains or other factors.

Still, clean energy leaders have been warning since then that the investigation — which could result in retroactive tariffs of up to 240% — would severely hinder the U.S. solar industry, leading to thousands of layoffs and imperiling up to 80% of planned solar projects around the country. That could jeopardize one of Biden’s top&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/climate-joe-biden-technology-business-nebraska-6b81807a3b1a9d8158b1a65220165601">clean energy</a>&nbsp;goals and run counter to his Democratic administration’s push for renewable energy such as wind and solar power.

“The president’s announcement will rejuvenate the construction and domestic manufacturing of solar power by restoring predictability and business certainty that the Department of Commerce’s flawed inquiry has disrupted,” Heather Zichal, CEO of the American Clean Power Association and a former Obama administration official, said in a statement Monday.

Others struck similar tones. Abigail Ross Hopper, president and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association, cheered Biden’s “thoughtful approach to addressing the current crisis of the paralyzed solar supply chain.”

“Today’s actions protect existing solar jobs, will lead to increased employment in the solar industry and foster a robust solar manufacturing base here at home,” Ross Hopper said in a statement.

But the moves drew sharp criticism from major solar panel manufacturer First Solar Inc., which said freezing tariffs grants “unfettered access to China’s state-subsidized solar companies for the next two years” and that using the Defense Production Act is “an ineffective use of taxpayer dollars and falls well short of a durable solar industrial policy.”

“The administration cannot stick a Band-Aid on the issue and hope that it goes away,” Samantha Sloan, the company’s vice president of policy, said in a statement.

Using executive actions comes as the Biden administration’s clean energy tax cuts, and other major proposals meant to encourage domestic green energy production, have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/climate-joe-biden-science-technology-business-b3bc2a5930b28dfcf1134879f86c131e">stalled in Congress</a>.

The Defense Production Act lets the federal government direct manufacturing production for national defense and has become a tool used more commonly by presidents in recent months. President Donald Trump’s administration used it to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/virus-outbreak-donald-trump-us-news-ap-top-news-wa-state-wire-e301b2fece936ef05ba760fd486f59a7">produce medical equipment and supplies</a>&nbsp;during the early stages of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/coronavirus-pandemic">the coronavirus pandemic</a>. Biden evoked its authority last month to prioritize&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-health-government-and-politics-df586c2e52b5e5865ea9f8091d4d1f80">boosting the nation’s supplies of baby formula</a>&nbsp;amid&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/baby-formula-shortage-what-to-know-735cef06e68ed9c5a46233bdfcf0573d">a domestic shortage</a>&nbsp;caused by the safety-related closure of the country’s largest formula factory.

Jean Su, director of the Center for Biological Diversity’s energy justice program, said in a statement that Biden’s announcement can “give critical momentum to the needed transition to solar energy.”

“We hope this use of the Defense Production Act is a turning point for the president, who must use all his executive powers to confront the climate emergency head on,” Su said.

Biden orders emergency steps to boost U.S. solar production

DOUGLAS COUNTY—The search for the driver in a hit and run accident that killed a 10-year-old Kansas girl ended Saturday in Indiana.&nbsp; The suspect's immigration status had an impact on information released in an effort to find 28-year-old Jose Alfredo Galiano Mesa, according to Douglas County Sheriff Jay Armbrister.

On Saturday, U.S. Marshals and Indiana State Troopers notified Kansas official that Mesa who lived in Overland Park, was in custody in Martinsville, Indiana, according to Armbrister.

The Sheriff’s Office had a warrant for Mesa’s arrest as the suspected driver that struck a motorcycle about 5:19 p.m., May 14 at East 1900 Road and Kansas Highway 10. Brooklyn Brouhard, 10, of Eudora, later died from injuries suffered in the crash. She was a passenger on the motorcycle driven by her grandfather Barry Larson, 54, of Eudora, who was also injured.

Authorities in Indiana located a vehicle with Mesa inside and took him into custody, and the Sheriff’s Office will now work on getting him extradited to Kansas to face charges.

“We are grateful for this arrest to begin the next chapter in the process in bringing answers to Brooklyn and her family. We thank all law enforcement agencies, especially the U.S. Marshals for their hard work.” Armbrister said.

“I also want to thank the public for their patience and trust in us in this process as we were limited in information we could provide while trying to locate a suspect in this serious crime who was eluding us.”

Mesa’s immigration status played a very large role in the need to keep his name from the public, Armbrister said.

“It was our fear that he would flee the country if we made him famous for all the wrong reasons, and we were poised to do so if it appeared he was moving south,” the sheriff said. “However, through tireless investigation, we knew he was still in the Midwest and could not risk pushing him out of the area, and due to those efforts, we were able to bring him safely into custody.”

After conducting an extensive investigation that included witness interviews, deputies early in the investigation were able to identify Mesa as the driver of the van that struck the motorcycle and left the scene. Mesa had been in Lawrence earlier in the day on May 14 for a painting job and was driving back to the Kansas City area.

Witnesses reported the driver of the white van after the collision proceeded down the ramp leaving its bumper behind and returned to eastbound K-10. Based on vehicle debris at the scene, witness interviews and assistance from area law enforcement agencies, deputies identified the vehicle and seized it on May 16 in the Kansas City area. After identifying Mesa, deputies and fellow law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Service had attempted to locate Mesa.

Immigration status had impact on search in fatal Kan. hit-and-run

SMITH COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Smith County Sheriff’s Office arrested a woman connected to a bank robbery in Kensington, Kansas, according to a media release from the KBI.

On Monday morning, June 6, at around 10:15 a.m., a woman robbed the Farmers National Bank at 133 S. Main St. in Kensington, Kansas. The Smith County Sheriff’s Office responded to the location and found Jennie R. Aanenson, 51, of Agra, Kansas, outside of the bank. Aanenson was detained.

The KBI was asked to assist at approximately 10:30 a.m. When questioned, Aanenson reported that she was forced by two men to rob the bank while armed with a bomb that was in her bag. She also claimed that her infant daughter was abducted by the men who left the area while she was inside the bank.

The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) and the Smith County Sheriff’s Office immediately began searching for the reported vehicles. Also assisting in the case were the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office and the Osborne County Sheriff’s Office.

KBI agents arrived to assist, and concluded that no child was abducted, and that Aanenson does not have an infant daughter. KHP’s Hazardous Devices Unit responded to the bank, and determined that the device was not a bomb.&nbsp;

Monday evening, Aanenson was arrested for suspected aggravated robbery with a dangerous weapon, aggravated criminal threat, and two counts of interference with law enforcement. She was booked into the Smith County Jail. Formal charges are pending.

UPDATE 6p.m. from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

On Monday morning, June 6, at around 10:30 a.m., the KBI responded to a bank robbery that occurred at the Farmers National Bank at 133 S. Main St. in Kensington, Kansas. The Smith County Sheriff’s Office detained one female subject outside of the bank. 

The woman was questioned and reported that she was forced by two men to rob the bank while armed with a bomb. She also reported that her infant daughter was abducted by the men who then left the area. Upon further investigation, 

law enforcement concluded that many of her statements were not credible. It has been determined that the device was not a bomb, and that the woman does not have an infant.

SMITH COUNTY —The Phillips County Sheriff's Department reported around 2 p.m. that a suspect is in custody.&nbsp;

"No child or other persons of interest are being sought at this time," according to the department's Facebook page.

SMITH COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities in north-central Kansas were looking for a shooting victim, two robbery suspects and an eight-week-old baby following an attempted bank robbery in Kensington Monday morning.

Just before 10:30a.m., according to a social media report from the Smith County Sheriff's Department,&nbsp; a woman entered a bank in Kensington, in an attempt to rob the bank. She made a bomb threat. She left the bank and two male suspects with the woman drove away and took her 8-week old baby girl.

Law enforcement in Kensington and surrounding towns were working to locate the suspects and the baby.&nbsp;

One suspect was described as wearing jeans, a white tee-shirt had a gold tooth and three teardrop tattoos under an eye.

The second suspect was described as wearing jeans and a green and white flannel shirt with cut-off sleeves.

The suspects were reported driving a white passenger van with a touch screen and Texas license plates. The gunshot victim was described as driving a Black Jeep four-door, Wrangler.

Main St. in Kensington, Kansas. The Smith County Sheriff’s Office detained one female subject outside of the bank. The woman was questioned and reported that she was forced by two men to rob the bank while armed with a bomb. She also reported that her infant daughter was abducted by the men who then left the area. Upon further investigation, law enforcement concluded that many of her statements were not credible. ATCHISON COUNTYLaw enforcement authorities are investigating a stabbing and have a suspect in custody.

Just after 2a.m. Sunday, police responded to investigate a stabbing that had occurred in the 500 block North 7th Street in Atchison, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

During a disturbance, between 36-year-old Katie Thomas and her 59-year-old husband, she stabbed him.

 Officers located the victim and the suspect several blocks from that scene where Thomas was taken into custody in requested charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

EMS transported the victim to the hospital in St. Joseph for a non life&nbsp; threatening stab wound, according to Wilson.
