FORD COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating bomb threats nationwide and at two schools in Kansas.

Just before 1p.m. Thursday, a&nbsp;bomb threat was called in at KU School of Medicine, 1010 N. Kansas Street, in Wichita, according to Officer Chad Ditch. Police and&nbsp;&nbsp;KU Security checked the facility and alerted staff. They found no bomb but continue to investigate, according to Ditch.

Just after 1p.m., the Ford County Communications Center received a call from a person saying there was a bomb in the Arts classroom of the Dodge City Community College, 2501 North 14th Avenue in Dodge City, according to a media release from police.

 The caller described the bomb and its location in the back of the classroom.  The caller also stated it would detonate in just over one hour.  Police, Fire and EMS responded and coordinated with campus security to evacuate the area and sweep the stated location.  No suspicious devices were located.  

College administration and security requested the area to be swept by a bomb dog.  During the coordination of the dog, we learned from state and federal Intelligence sources that the same report had been made at multiple campuses across the nation. 

 Each of these searches concluded the same.  The detonation time elapsed without incident.  

At this time, the Dodge City Community College security and police were holding the area closed off to the public until the bomb dog arrives and searches for a device.

Just after 5 a.m. Saturday, sheriff's deputies were sent to a shooting call in the 4400 block of south Rock Road in rural Sedgwick County, according to Blick.&nbsp;

At the scene, first responders found 42-year-old&nbsp;<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20076411">David Baeza</a>&nbsp;of Wichita on the side of the road suffering from gunshot wounds, according to Colonel Brian White with the sheriff's department. EMS transported Baeza to an area hospital for treatment.

During an additional search of the rural property, deputies found a man andNegrete-Perez deceased in the backyard of a residence the 4300 block of South Rock Road. They died from apparent gunshot wounds.&nbsp; The victims did not live at this location, according to White.

While processing the scene, investigators found 43-year-old&nbsp;<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=18714449">Joseph Ponse Jr. </a>&nbsp;of Wichita. Deputies booked him on requested charges of first degree murder and a Kansas Department of Corrections arrest and detain order, according to White.

After he was released from the hospital and interviewed, deputies booked<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20076411">&nbsp;Baeza</a>&nbsp;on requested charges of first-degree murder.

Investigators still have individuals they want to interview in connection with the case, according to White. "This was not a random act and drug activity is believed involved."&nbsp;

OVERLAND PARK - The University of Kansas Cancer Center has been designated as a “Comprehensive” cancer center by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kucancercenter.org/research/transformative-research/nci-designation" target="_blank">the National Cancer Institute (NCI)</a>. This is the highest level of recognition awarded by the NCI and is the gold standard for cancer centers.

“Nearly twenty years ago, this entire community joined together and decided that national designation, and ultimately Comprehensive designation, of our cancer center was our top priority as a region. It was our moonshot,” said Douglas A. Girod, MD, chancellor of&nbsp;<a href="https://ku.edu/" target="_blank">the University of Kansas</a>. “Well, today we’ve landed on the moon, so to speak. What was once a dream is now a reality. And that reality means better patient care, better health outcomes and better research. And it means we are one step closer to our ultimate goal – which is to rid our society of cancer so that we all have the opportunity to live happier, healthier lives.”

In addition to Comprehensive status, the KU Cancer Center was awarded a five-year, $13.8 million grant to support the center’s research programs, shared equipment and resources. It also received an “outstanding” rating by NCI reviewers.

“Comprehensive designation is a crucial milestone in our journey to conquer all cancers,” said Roy Jensen, MD, vice chancellor and director of KU Cancer Center. “You might ask, ‘What does Comprehensive designation mean for people with cancer?’ As one of just 53 NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the nation, it means patients will be cared for by the world’s leading cancer experts who have access to a robust portfolio of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kucancercenter.org/cancer-clinical-trials" target="_blank">clinical trials</a>. The University of Kansas Cancer Center has nearly 350 researchers and 150 disease-specific oncologists. They conduct all phases of cancer research, from laboratory studies to clinical trials to population-based studies that address environmental and behavioral factors that contribute to cancer.

Research operations at KU Cancer Center have already contributed an estimated $2.5 billion in economic impact to the region since 2007 when the center began working toward NCI designation in earnest. It’s estimated that those numbers will only increase with the anticipated expansion that will accompany KU Cancer Center achieving Comprehensive designation. University leaders note that the growth of the cancer center has contributed to additional advancements at the university.

“Two decades ago, when KU Medical Center leadership decided to focus on cancer research, there were some who worried that other areas might be left behind,” said Robert D. CLEVELAND (AP) — Reassuring&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/voting-rights-abortion-us-supreme-court-filibusters-michael-bennet-6a3ea5e275e6e2bc4f3a3060beda4fa3">frustrated blue-collar voters</a>, President Joe Biden on Wednesday visited Ohio iron workers to highlight federal action to shore up troubled pension funding for millions now on the job or retired — and to make his political case that he’s been a champion for workers in the White House.

Biden’s speech at a Cleveland high school showcased a final rule tied to his $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package from last year. The rule allows troubled multi-company pensions to be made financially whole, ensuring full benefits for 2 million to 3 million workers and retirees.

Hurt politically by inflation at a 40-year high and damage wrought by the pandemic, the president chose to deliver his message in a state that has been trending strongly Republican, with Donald Trump easily carrying it twice. In his sixth visit as president, Biden looked to personally reverse that electoral tide, touting the rule to help multi-company pensions as one of the most significant efforts to support union workers’ retirement funds in the past 50 years.

“A lot of politicians like to talk about how they’re going to do something about it,” Biden said. “Well, I’m here today to say we’ve done something about it.”

“We’re turning a promise broken, into a promise kept.”

The roughly 200 pension plans receiving assistance faced possible insolvency without government aid. And without the full benefits, workers and retirees could struggle to pay for housing, food and other essentials. The financial support should help keep the pension funds solvent for roughly 30 years until 2051.

That’s important, several retirees said.

Bill DeVito, who introduced Biden, said “it was devastating” when his pension was cut 40 percent in 2017 after his lifetime spent as an iron worker.

“The thing of it is, we had a lot of politicians over the years saying, hey, we’ll try to help you, we’ll do everything we can, and nobody’s ever done anything for us until Joe Biden come along,” said DeVito, 73. He said that other Ohio Democrats in Washington kept pushing, too.

Jeffrey Carlson, 67, of the Cleveland suburb of North Ridgeville, said that a year before he retired in 2017, he learned his pension would be cut, too.

“I’m grateful for anything that we could get back,” he said. “I know I earned it. I worked hard.”

Multiemployer plans are created through agreements between companies and a union, and are insured by the federal Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC). In 2014, Congress passed the Multiemployer Pension Reform Act that allowed plans, for the first time, to cut workers and retirees’ benefits in order to ensure that pensions projected to run out of money remained solvent.

The American Rescue Plan passed in March 2021 included a special finance assistance program that allows struggling multiemployer pension plans to apply to the PBGC for assistance. The final rule being unveiled by the Biden administration is designed to make it easier for the pensions’ investments to receive a higher rate of return.

The effort to highlight a program to help union workers comes as Democrats hope to pick up a U.S. Senate seat in Ohio, where a strong showing with working class voters could play a pivotal role.

Republican Rob Portman is leaving the Senate after two terms. Vying to replace him are Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan and Republican J.D. Vance, the author of the memoir “Hillbilly Elegy” who secured an endorsement during the primary from Trump. Ohio voters backed Trump in 2016 and 2020, with his margin of victory each time at roughly 8 percentage points.

In a sign of Biden’s standing in the state, Ryan didn’t appear with him at Wednesday’s event, but White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the administration was “in close contact with Congressman Tim Ryan in particular.” Biden in his speech noted Ryan’s absence and referred to him as the “future” U.S. senator from Ohio.

One veteran Democratic lawmaker who did attend, Ohio Rep. Marcy Kaptur, praised Biden for looking out for American workers’ pensions.

“People say, ’Marcy why do you stay in the House?′ This is why,” Kaptur said. She added, “The former president — the Donald — didn’t do anything.”

Biden, too, sharply criticized his predecessor, as well as “Trumpers” in Congress who continue to support the former president’s agenda. He blamed them for blocking efforts to lower prescription drug prices and tackle surging inflation, and assailed them for proposals to require Congress to reauthorize Medicare and Social Security and raise some low-income Americans’ taxes.

“That’s why elections have consequences,” Biden said, looking ahead to November’s midterms. “That’s why they matter. And that’s why what we’re doing here is so important.”

While Biden boasts of steady job growth — unemployment sits at 3.6% — Americans have largely been discontented with the Democratic president’s handling of the economy as inflation continues to rise, interest rates increase and the stock market wobbles. Just 28 percent approve of Biden’s stewardship of the economy, down from 51% a year ago, according to an AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll published last week.

Labor Secretary Marty Walsh, who attended with Biden, made his own pitch that the president has delivered for American workers.

“I just want you to understand that this, the president that we have right now .. .is the most pro worker president in America’s history,” he declared.

Biden closed his remarks by appealing to working-class voters who helped send him to the White House.

“There’s no other place I want to be than right here with the workers in this room and the workers that built America,” Biden said. “I see you. I hear you and I’ll always have your back.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — James Caan, the curly-haired tough guy known to movie fans as the hotheaded Sonny Corleone of “The Godfather” and to television audiences as both the dying football player in the classic weeper “Brian’s Song” and the casino boss in “Las Vegas,” has died. He was 82.

His manager Matt DelPiano said he died on Wednesday. No cause was given.

“Jimmy was one of the greatest. Not only was he one of the best actors our business has ever seen, he was funny, loyal, caring and beloved,” DelPiano said. “Our relationship was always friendship before business. I will miss him dearly and am proud to have worked with him all these years."

A football player at Michigan State University and a practical joker on production sets, Caan was a grinning, handsome performer with an athlete’s swagger and muscular build. He managed a long career despite drug problems, outbursts of temper and minor brushes with the law.

Caan had been a favorite of Francis Ford Coppola since the 1960s, when Coppola cast him for the lead in “Rain People.” He was primed for a featured role in “The Godfather” as Sonny, the No. 1 enforcer and eldest son of Mafia boss Vito Corleone.

Sonny Corleone, a violent and reckless man who conducted many killings, met his own end in one of the most jarring movie scenes in history. For decades after, he once said, strangers would approach him on the street and jokingly warn him to stay clear of toll roads.

Despite Coppola’s fears he had made a flop, the 1972 release was an enormous critical and commercial success and brought supporting actor Oscar nominations for Caan, Duvall and Al Pacino.

Caan was already a star on television, breaking through in the 1971 TV movie “Brian’s Song,” an emotional drama about Chicago Bears running back Brian Piccolo, who had died of cancer the year before at age 26.

After “Brian’s Song” and “The Godfather,” he was one of Hollywood’s busiest actors, appearing in “Hide in Plain Sight” (which he also directed), “Funny Lady” (opposite Barbra Streisand), “The Killer Elite” and Neil Simon’s “Chapter Two,” among others. He also made a brief appearance in a flashback sequence in “The Godfather, Part II.”

But by the early 1980s he began to sour on films. He had begun to struggle with drug use and was devastated by the 1981 leukemia death of his sister, Barbara, who until then had been a guiding force in his career.

He returned to full-fledged stardom opposite Kathy Bates in “Misery” in 1990.

Once again in demand, Caan starred in “For the Boys” with Bette Midler in 1991 as part of a song-and-dance team entertaining U.S. soldiers during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars. The following year he played a tongue-in-cheek version of Sonny Corleone in the comedy “Honeymoon in Vegas."

Other later films included “Flesh and Bone,” “Bottle Rocket” and “Mickey Blue Eyes.” He introduced himself to a new generation playing Walter, the workaholic, stone-faced father of Buddy’s Will Ferrell in “Elf.”

Married and divorced four times, Caan had a daughter, Tara, and sons Scott, Alexander, James and Jacob.

On Wednesday, July 6th, Saint George Police Department served two search warrants simultaneously at 107 N Lincoln Street and 215 Kelly Lane, both in Saint George, Kansas.

Saint George Police Department has been investigating an ongoing distribution of marijuana, prescription pills and possible fentanyl to teenagers in the Pottawatomie County area.

The search warrants allege adults are using teenagers to distribute the illegal drugs with small children present in both homes.

The following individuals were arrested as part of the two search warrants.&nbsp; DIXIE ROSE MARTIN, 44,&nbsp; was arrested at 107 N. Lincoln and transported to Pottawatomie County Jail with the following requested charges: Distribute or possess with intent to distribute marijuana within 1000 feet of school; Aggravated Endangering of a Child; Contributing to a child's misconduct; Possession of Marijuana; Possession of Drug Paraphernalia; Possession of Opiates; Possession of Depressants; No Kansas Drug Tax Stamp

ADAM SCOT TIRAK, 17, was arrested at 107 N Lincoln with requested charges of Possession of Marijuana and Endangering a Child. He was later released to a family member.

MARTIN,&nbsp; HAMILTON and COOK are being held at the Pottawatomie County Jail without bond until their first court appearance and are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

During the search, officers removed four children from both homes, they were placed into custody of the State of Kansas.

The investigation is still on-going and more arrests are anticipated with investigation.&nbsp;

Kansas State Fair Grand Drive announces scholarship winners

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Authorities investigating a fatal head-on crash have identified the man who died as 32-year-old Nicholas Cox of Haysville, according to Sheriff's Lt. Benjamin Blick.

Just after 11a.m. Wednesday,&nbsp;a 2014 Chevy Cruze driven by Cox was eastbound at 7600 west MacArthur Road. The Chevy struck a westbound 2012 Ford F-150 driven by a 27-year-old man from Derby head-on.

Cox died at the scene, according to Blick. EMS transported the driver of the Ford F-150 to a local hospital with serious injuries

At the location of the collision MacArthur Road is a two lane paved road with center and edge line markings. The circumstances of the collision remain under investigation, according to Blick. 

SEDGWICK COUNTY—One person died in an accident just after 11a.m. Wednesday in Sedgwick County.

According to Sheriff's Lt. Benjamin Blick, a 2014 Chevy Cruze driven by a 32-year-old man was eastbound at 7600 west MacArthur Road. The Chevy struck a westbound 2012 Ford F-150 driven by a 27-year-old man head-on.

Sheriff IDs Kansas man who died after head-on crash

MOSCOW (AP) — Jailed American basketball star Brittney Griner on Thursday pleaded guilty to drug possession and smuggling during her trial in Moscow but said she had no intention of committing a crime, Russian news agencies reported.

The reports quoted Griner as saying through an interpreter at the court hearing that she had acted unintentionally because she was packing in haste.

Griner was detained in February at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport after vape canisters with cannabis oil allegedly were found in her luggage. She faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of large-scale transportation of drugs.

The trial of the Phoenix Mercury star and two-time Olympic gold medalist began last week amid a growing chorus of calls for Washington to do more to secure her freedom nearly five months after her arrest.

Before Thursday’s hearing, Russian police escorted Griner, handcuffed and clad in a bright red T-shirt and sports trousers, into the courtroom past a crowd of journalists.

The athlete was detained in February at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport after vape canisters with cannabis oil allegedly were found in her luggage. She faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of large-scale transportation of drugs.

Elizabeth Rood, deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, told reporters after the hearing that she spoke to Griner in the courtroom and shared a letter from President Joe Biden that she read.

“I would like again to emphasize the commitment of the U.S. government at the very highest level to bring home safely Ms. Griner and all U.S. citizens wrongfully detained as well as the commitment of the U.S. Embassy in Moscow to care for and protect the interests of all U.S. citizens detained or imprisoned in Russia,” Rood said.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov bristled at the U.S. description of Briner as “wrongfully detained” and warned that “attempts by the American side to make noise in public ... don’t help the practical settlement of issues.”

The White House said Biden called Griner’s wife on Wednesday to assure her that he’s doing all he can to obtain the athlete’s release, as soon as possible. They spoke after Biden read a letter from Griner in which she said she feared she’d never return home.

Washington hasn’t made public its strategy in the case and the United States may have little leverage with Moscow because of strong animosity due to Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. The State Department has designated Griner as wrongfully detained, moving her case under the supervision of its special presidential envoy for hostage affairs, effectively the government’s chief hostage negotiator.

Asked about the possibility of Griner being swapped for a Russian jailed in the U.S., Ryabkov, the senior Russian diplomat, noted that until her trial is over “there are no formal or procedural reasons to talk about any further steps.”

He warned that U.S. criticism, including a description of Griner as wrongfully detained and dismissive comments about the Russian judicial system, “makes it difficult to engage in detailed discussion of any possible exchanges.”

“The persistence with which the U.S. administration ... describes those who were handed prison sentences for serious criminal articles and those who are awaiting the end of investigation and court verdicts as ‘wrongfully detained’ reflects Washington’s refusal to have a sober view of the outside world,” Ryabkov snapped.

Griner's trial was adjourned after its start last week because two scheduled witnesses did not appear. Such delays are routine in Russian courts and her detention has been authorized through Dec. 20, suggesting the proceedings could last months.

Although Griner's supporters initially kept a low profile, calls for the United States to take action spiked after the trial's first day.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, one of America's most prominent Black activists, this week called for Biden to arrange a prayer meeting with Griner, saying, "Four months is too long for this to have gone on, and I hope the President acts on her pleas to come home.”

An organization called Win With Black Women sent Biden a letter saying Secretary of State Antony Blinken “has called Cherelle Griner, Brittney’s wife, assuring her and stating publicly that Brittney’s safe return was a matter of personal priority; however, we are concerned that the rhetoric does not appear to align with the actions taken to date. We urge you to make a deal to get Brittney back home swiftly.”

Russian news media have repeatedly speculated that Griner could be swapped for Russian arms trader Viktor Bout, nicknamed “the Merchant of Death,” who is serving a 25-year sentence in the U.S. on conviction of conspiracy to kill U.S. citizens and providing aid to a terrorist organization.

Russia has agitated for Bout’s release for years. But the wide discrepancy between Griner’s alleged offense and Bout’s global dealings in deadly weapons could make such a swap unpalatable to Washington.

Others have suggested that she could be traded along with Paul Whelan, a former Marine and security director serving a 16-year sentence in Russia on an espionage conviction that the U.S. has repeatedly described as a setup.

Russia has shown no signs of backing off.

“This is a serious offense, confirmed by indisputable evidence ... Attempts to present the case as if the American was detained illegally do not hold up," Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexei Zaitsev said Wednesday.

“The law has been violated, and arguments about the innocent nature of Griner’s addiction, which, by the way, is punishable in some U.S. states, are inappropriate in this case,” he said.

Report: Former Big 12 star pleads guilty in Russia drugs trial

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal shooting that left&nbsp;39-year-old Louis Cantrell of Topeka dead have made an arrest.

Late Wednesday, police arrested 20-year-old Jahiem Brown and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of First Degree Murder, Aggravated assault; Use of a deadly weapon and&nbsp;Criminal possession of a firearm by a felon, according to Lt. Jerry Monasmith.

Just before 1a.m. July 5, police responded to report of a shooting in the 200 Block SE Lawrence Street in Topeka, according to Lt. Jerry Monasmith. Upon arrival, officers located Cantrell suffering from a gunshot wound. An ambulance transported him to an area hospital. 

Medical personnel pronounced him deceased, according to Monasmith.&nbsp; Police released no additional details Tuesday afternoon.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/380b54e1-a41f-4346-96b1-ac4473343bc8">With the news that Democrats believe they have reached a deal on negotiating the cost of prescription drugs in the Medicare program that can pass through the budget reconcilation process</a>, Kansas U.S. Senator Jerry Moran said Thursday that he hasn't seen what went to the parliamentarian earlier this week, but that using the reconciliation process to pass policy isn't the way he believes that the Senate should run.

"The Senate, for a long time, most of its history, has required a supermajority to consider and pass legislation," Moran said. "It used to be unanimous agreement. Over time, that number has been whittled down to 60 votes and there's an ongoing debate, should the rules be changed to the United States Senate? Senator Sinema and Senator Manchin would not agree to those rule changes. I agree with Senator Sinema and Senator Manchin. It is to the well being of the country, certainly to the functioning of the Senate, that things occur with support from both Republicans and Democrats. A 60-vote rule protects the minority."

The budget reconcilation process is an exception to that 60-vote rule, and only policies that change spending or revenues can be included. Senate debate time is limited, and only certain kinds of amendments can be offered.

"Kansans are often in the minority, even when we're not talking Republicans or Democrats," Moran said. "The way we look at things, rural America, agriculture. Bringing people together is a good thing. The use of reconciliation is one way around the 60-vote rule. It says, whenever you are implementing, by legislation, your budget bill, so you have a budget in place, to implement the spending and taxes that go with that budget, you can pass legislation with 51 votes."

The Senate was designed to be more deliberative and cooperative in nature in the U.S. Constitution, which is why Senators are up for election every six years, while House members face the voters every two years.

"It's designed to counterbalance one with the other, a longer term view with a shorter term view," Moran said. "Our framers, I think, again, got that right, as well. Over time, the Senate has come to look a lot more like the House and I think the country is damaged by that and forcing Senators to work together by the rules, even if not by the goodwill among Senators, is a valuable thing."

Any Senator may raise a point of order against an extraneous provision in the reconciliation bill, amendments, or the conference agreement. Senator Moran serves on the Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies.

JOHNSON COUNTY— The Eastern Kansas Multi-County Taskforce has completed their investigation of the fire that sent four firefighters to the hospital and has ruled it as an accidental fire caused from an electrical component in the basement, according to the Shawnee Fire Department.

Just after 9p.m. Tuesday, fire crews responded to a house fire at 4610 Silverheel Street in Shawnee, according to a media release.

While firefighters were in the home, a stairway collapsed and injured four fighters.&nbsp;The fire had progressed into a storage area underneath the stairwell that firefighters used to access the basement. The fire had weakened the stairwell and caused it to collapse under the weight of fire crews.

The Rapid Intervention crews responded immediately and rescued the four fighters from the home. EMS transported them to local hospitals where they were treated and released.

A fifth firefighter received medical attention at the scene due to the intense heat. Three residents of the home were able to escape without injury.

Mayor Michelle Distler said "Most importantly, I am so relieved that all of our firefighters are recovering. I want to extend any help I can possibly provide to the firefighters and their families. I think we all understand this could have had a different ending as it did for one of our own back in 2010. The bravery, courage and selflessness these men and women show every day when they show up on the job is unmatched. They make a promise to our community to protect and serve and that was on full display Tuesday night."&nbsp;

Officials learn cause of Kan. house fire that injured 4 firefighters

LONDON (AP) — Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his resignation Thursday amid a mass revolt by top members of his government, marking an end to three tumultuous years in power in which he brazenly bent and sometimes broke the rules of British politics.

Months of defiance ended almost with a shrug as Johnson stood in 10 Downing Street and conceded that his party wanted him gone.

The brash, 58-year-old politician who took Britain out of the European Union and steered it through COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine was brought down by one scandal too many — this one involving his appointment of a politician who had been accused of sexual misconduct.

The messiest of prime ministers did not leave cleanly. Johnson stepped down immediately as Conservative Party leader but said he would remain as prime minister until the party chooses his successor. The timetable for that process will be announced next week, he said.

But many in the party want him gone before then, and his government has been shredded by scores of resignations.

Among the possible candidates to succeed him: former Health Secretary Sajid Javid, former Treasury chief Rishi Sunak, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and Defense Secretary Ben Wallace.

Johnson had clung to power for two days, defiantly telling lawmakers on Wednesday that he had a “colossal mandate” from voters and intended to get on with the business of government.

But he was forced to concede defeat Thursday morning after one of his closest allies, newly appointed Treasury chief Nadhim Zahawi, publicly told him to resign for the good of the country.

“In the last few days, I tried to persuade my colleagues that it would be eccentric to change governments when we’re delivering so much and when we have such a vast mandate," Johnson said outside his office. “I regret not to have been successful in those arguments, and of course it’s painful not to be able to see through so many ideas and projects myself.’’

About 50 Cabinet secretaries, ministers and lower-level officials had quit the government over the past few days, often castigating the prime minister for his lack of integrity.

The mass resignations had left numerous positions unfilled, and the crisis had stalled the business of some parliamentary committees because there were no ministers available to speak on the government’s behalf.

“It is clearly now the will of the parliamentary Conservative Party that there should be a new leader of that party and therefore a new prime minister,” Johnson said.

Zahawi, who was promoted earlier this week as Johnson tried to shore up his Cabinet, said he and a group of colleagues had privately expressed their concerns to the prime minister on Wednesday and he decided to go public after Johnson ignored the advice to resign.

“I am heartbroken that he hasn’t listened and that he is now undermining the incredible achievements of this government,” Zahawi said in a letter posted on Twitter. “But the country deserves a government that is not only stable but which acts with integrity.”

It is a humiliating defeat for Johnson, who not only pulled off Brexit but was credited with rolling out one of the world’s most successful mass vaccination campaigns to combat COVID-19.

But the perpetually rumpled, shaggy-haired leader known for greeting critics with bombast and bluster was also dogged by criticism that he acted as if the rules did not apply to him.

Johnson became prime minister in July 2019, succeeding Theresa May, who resigned after Parliament rejected the Brexit agreement she negotiated with the EU. Johnson pushed his own Brexit deal through in an often messy and turbulent debate.

He managed to remain in power despite allegations that he was too close to party donors, that he protected supporters from bullying and corruption allegations, and that he misled Parliament about government office parties that broke COVID-19 lockdown rules. He was fined by police over the parties and survived a no-confidence vote last month in Parliament in which 41% of Conservative lawmakers voted to oust him.

Recent disclosures that Johnson knew about sexual misconduct allegations against a Conservative lawmaker before he promoted him to a senior position in government proved to be one scandal too many.

The crisis began when Chris Pincher resigned as deputy chief whip amid allegations that he had groped two men at a private club. That triggered a series of reports about past allegations leveled against Pincher.

Johnson tried to deflect criticism with shifting explanations about what he knew and when he knew it, but that just highlighted concerns that the prime minister couldn’t be trusted.

Javid and Sunak resigned within minutes of each other Tuesday night, triggering the wave of departures among their Cabinet colleagues and lower-level officials.

Javid captured the mood of many lawmakers when he said Johnson’s actions threatened to undermine the integrity of the Conservative Party and the British government.

“At some point we have to conclude that enough is enough,” he said Wednesday in the House of Commons. “I believe that point is now.”

Bernard Jenkin, a senior Conservative Party lawmaker, told the BBC he met with Johnson later in the day and advised him to step down.

“I just said to him, ‘Look, it’s just when you go now, and it’s how you go. You can go with some dignity or you can be forced out like Donald Trump clinging to power and pretending he’s won the election when he’s lost,'" Jenkin said.
