KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Former Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid sentencing scheduled for Friday was delayed to Tuesday afternoon November 1, according to Jackson County officials.

He pleaded guilty in September to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-kansas-football-kansas-city-kansas-city-chiefs-d43b085c56ac1d0ec8445f30faa6a4d0">felony driving while intoxicated</a>&nbsp;resulting in serious physical injury stemming from a 2021 crash, which occurred when his pickup truck struck two stopped cars on an interstate entrance ramp and seriously injured a 5-year-old girl.

Reid, the 37-year-old son of Chiefs coach Andy Reid, had been scheduled to go to trial on Sept. 26. He had faced up to seven years in prison, but the plea deal means he now faces a possible sentence ranging from probation to four years in prison.&nbsp;

Investigators said Reid was intoxicated and driving about 84 mph&nbsp; when his Dodge truck hit the cars on an entrance ramp to Interstate 435 near Arrowhead Stadium on Feb. 4, 2021.

A girl inside one of the cars, Ariel Young, suffered a traumatic brain injury. Six people, including Reid, were injured in the crash.

In court, Reid acknowledged he was drinking on the night of the crash.

“I really regret what I did,” Reid said. “I made a huge mistake. I apologize to the family. I didn't mean to hurt anyone.”

Tom Pardo, an attorney representing Ariel's family, said they opposed the plea deal.

“The five victims of this crime are outraged,” Pardo said. “The prosecuting attorney is not seeking maximum sentence allowable by law. The defendant is a prior offender whose actions caused a 5-year-old girl to be in a coma and seriously injured three others.”

A Kansas City police officer who arrived at the scene of the crash reported he could smell alcohol and that Reid’s eyes were bloodshot, according to court documents. Reid had a blood-alcohol level of 0.113 two hours after the crash, police said. The legal limit is 0.08.

One of the vehicles he hit had stalled because of a dead battery and the second was owned by Ariel’s mother, who had arrived to help.

The Chiefs reached a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-sports-health-business-football-b79b53869eb2a017e1e41623ac5abb58">confidential agreement</a>&nbsp;with Ariel's family in November to pay for her ongoing medical treatment and other expenses.

Reid underwent emergency surgery for a groin injury after the crash. The Chiefs placed Reid on administrative leave and his job with the team ended after his contract was allowed to expire.

This is not the first legal issue for Reid, who graduated from a drug treatment program in Pennsylvania in 2009 after a series of run-ins with law enforcement. His father was coach of the Philadelphia Eagles at the time.

Britt Reid's older brother, Garrett, served a two-year sentence in a Pennsylvania state drug program after he was arrested on drug-related charges. Garrett Reid later was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/philadelphia-eagles-nfl-sports-archive-philadelphia-22c3d437603141f0ae97ae96ff1103a6">found dead</a>&nbsp;in August 2012 in his dorm room at Lehigh University, where he was assisting at the Eagles' training camp. Prison or probation: Sentencing for ex-Chiefs assistant delayed 

WASHINGTON (AP) — The intruder who attacked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband in their San Francisco home was searching for the Democratic leader, shouting "Where is Nancy, where is Nancy?" before assaulting Paul Pelosi with a hammer.

Those shouts were a chilling echo of the chants during the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the Capitol, when rioters trying to stop Joe Biden's election searched menacingly through the halls for the speaker.<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/paul-pelosi"> Paul Pelosi</a>&nbsp;was attacked and severely beaten by an assailant who broke into the Pelosi home early Friday, police said. The intruder confronted him shouting for the speaker's whereabouts, according to another person briefed on the situation.

“The motive for this attack is still being determined,” said San Francisco Police Chief William Scott at a press briefing.

The suspect was identified as David Depape, Scott said. He was in custody.

“Our officers observed Mr. Pelosi and the suspect both holding a hammer," Scott said. "The suspect pulled the hammer away from Mr. Pelosi and violently assaulted him with it. Our officers immediately tackled the suspect, disarmed him, took him into custody, requested emergency backup and rendered medical aid.”

Scott said Depape was being charged with attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse aand other charges.

The 42-year-old man broke into House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco home early Thursday, attacking the speaker’s husband with a hammer just as police officials responded to the home.

Police responded to the 2:27 a.m. call. Both men were holding the hammer, he said.

The 82 year-old suffered blunt force injuries to his head and body, according to two people who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing probe. He was admitted to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital for his injuries, the hospital confirmed. His condition was not immediately available.

Paul Pelosi was being treated by doctors for bruising, severe swelling and other injuries.

While the circumstances of the attack were unclear, the attack raised questions about the safety of members of Congress and their families. Threats to lawmakers are at an all-time high almost two years after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/capitol-siege">the Capitol insurrection</a>. The attack also came just 11 days ahead of midterm elections in which crime and public safety have emerged as top concerns among Americans.

In 2021, Capitol Police investigated around 9,600 threats made against members of Congress, and members have been physically attacked in recent years. Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., was shot in the head at an event outside a Tucson grocery store in 2011, and Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., was severely injured when a gunman opened fire on a Republican congressional baseball team practice in 2017.

Members of Congress have received additional dollars for security at their homes, but some have pushed for yet more protection as people have shown up at their homes and as members have received an increasing number of threatening communications.

Capitol Police, tasked with protecting congressional leaders, said Nancy Pelosi was with her protective detail in Washington at the time her husband was attacked.

Speaker Pelosi, who is second in the line of succession to the president, had just returned this week from a security conference in Europe and is due to keynote an advocacy event Saturday evening in Washington with Vice President Kamala Harris.

Capitol Police said the FBI and San Francisco police were also investigating. The suspect was in the custody of the San Francisco police.

Often at Nancy Pelosi’s side during formal events in Washington, Paul Pelosi is a wealthy investor who largely remains on the West Coast. They have five adult children and many grandchildren. The two have been married 59 years.

Earlier this year, Paul Pelosi pleaded guilty to misdemeanor driving under the influence charges related to a May crash in California’s wine country and was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/california-san-francisco-nancy-pelosi-sentencing-napa-e98c47d5c47fa273cf2d65bf5c85124f">sentenced to five days in jail and three years of probation</a>.

President Joe Biden and lawmakers from both parties reacted to the assault with shock and expressed their well wishes to the Pelosi family.

“What happened to Paul Pelosi was a dastardly act," said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. “I spoke with Speaker Pelosi earlier this morning and conveyed my deepest concern and heartfelt wishes to her husband and their family, and I wish him a speedy recovery.”

“We have been to many events with the Pelosis over the last 2 decades and we’ve had lots of occasions to talk about both of our families and the challenges of being part of a political family. Thinking about the Pelosi family today," tweeted Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that President Joe Biden has also been in contact with Nancy Pelosi.

“The President is praying for Paul Pelosi and for Speaker Pelosi’s whole family,” Jean-Pierre said. “This morning he called Speaker Pelosi to express his support after this horrible attack. He is also very glad that a full recovery is expected. The president continues to condemn all violence, and asks that the family’s desire for privacy be respected.”

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said on twitter, “Horrified and disgusted by the reports that Paul Pelosi was assaulted in his and Speaker Pelosi’s home last night. Grateful to hear that Paul is on track to make a full recovery and that law enforcement including our stellar Capitol Police are on the case.”

At the Capitol Democratic Sen. Pat Leahy of Vermont, who is third in line of succession, said he had known Paul Pelosi “forever.” He said, “It’s just horrible.”

Pelosi, 82, suffered blunt force injuries in the attack, according to two people with knowledge of the investigation who spoke to The Associated Press on Friday on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing probe.

🎥.Police ID suspect in hammer attack on Pelosi's husband 

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The 19-year-old gunman who forced his way into a St. Louis school and killed two people purchased the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/crime-shootings-school-st-louis-00bda97835851e40fd9654a80987b36d">AR-15-style rifle</a>&nbsp;from a private seller after an FBI background check stopped him from buying a weapon from a licensed dealer, police said Thursday.

Orlando Harris tried to buy a firearm from a licensed dealer in nearby St. Charles, Missouri, on Oct. 8, St. Louis police said in a news release Thursday evening. An FBI background check “successfully blocked this sale,” police said, though they didn't say why the sale was blocked. A message seeking comment wasn't immediately returned.

Harris then bought the rifle used in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/st-louis-shootings-crime-5aa844c9d070bb4e6fc64151da76d6a4">school shooting on Monday at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School</a>&nbsp;from a private seller who had purchased it legally in 2020, police said.

Police noted in the release that Missouri does not have a red-flag law aimed at keeping firearms away from people who may be a danger to themselves or others. As a result, police "did not have clear authority to temporarily seize the rifle when they responded to the suspect’s home when called by the suspect’s mother on 10/15/22.”

Police on Wednesday said Harris' mother called police on the evening of Oct. 15 after she found a gun and wanted it removed. The statement said someone known to the family was contacted and took possession of it.

Somehow, Harris got the gun back. How that happened is under investigation.

Police responded within minutes after being called Monday morning. Officers confronted and killed the gunman, who graduated from the school last year. He had around 600 rounds of ammunition with him.

Tenth-grader Alexzandria Bell and teacher Jean Kuczka were killed in the attack, and seven 15- and 16-year-olds were wounded. None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

Police believe Harris had intended targets. They have not said if any of the victims were among them.

Harris’ mother was “heartbroken” by the shooting, Police Commissioner Michael Sack said. She and other relatives had long dealt with Harris’ mental health issues and even had him committed at times, Sack said at a news conference on Wednesday. They also monitored his mail and often checked his room to make sure he did not have a weapon.

In a note left behind, Harris lamented that he had no friends, no family, no girlfriend and a life of isolation. His note called it the “perfect storm for a mass shooter.”

“Mental health is a difficult thing,” Sack said. “It’s hard to tell when somebody is going to be violent and act out, or if they’re just struggling, they’re depressed, and they might self-harm.”

Central Visual and Performing Arts shares a building with another magnet school, Collegiate School of Medicine and Bioscience, which also was evacuated as the shooting unfolded. Central has 383 students, Collegiate 336.

The building was locked Monday morning and an unarmed security guard saw Harris trying to get in. Sack has declined to say how Harris forced his way inside.

Officers, some of whom were off-duty, arrived four minutes after the 911 call. Amid the chaos of students, teachers and staff fleeing, officers asked some of them where the gunman was. Eight minutes after arriving, officers located Harris on the third floor, barricaded in a classroom. Police said that when Harris shot at officers, they shot back and broke through the door.

The St. Louis shooting was the first school shooting to involve multiple deaths since a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/uvalde-school-shooting">gunman killed 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas</a>, in May, according to a list of shootings compiled by Education Week.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) —Jerry Lee Lewis, the untamable rock ‘n’ roll pioneer whose outrageous talent, energy and ego collided on such definitive records as “Great Balls of Fire” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” and sustained a career otherwise upended by personal scandal, died Friday morning at 87.

The last survivor of a generation of groundbreaking performers that included Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and Little Richard, Lewis died at home in Memphis, Tennessee, representative Zach Farnum said in a release.

Of all the rock rebels to emerge in the 1950s, few captured the new genre’s attraction and danger as unforgettably as the Louisiana-born piano player who called himself “The Killer.”

Tender ballads were best left to the old folks. Lewis was all about lust and gratification, with his leering tenor and demanding asides, violent tempos and brash glissandi, cocky sneer and crazy blond hair. He was a one-man stampede who made the fans scream and the keyboards swear, his live act so combustible that during a 1957 performance of “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” on “The Steve Allen Show,” chairs were thrown at him like buckets of water on an inferno.

“There was rockabilly. There was Elvis. But there was no pure rock ’n ’roll before Jerry Lee Lewis kicked in the door,” a Lewis admirer once observed. That admirer was Jerry Lee Lewis.

But in his private life, he raged in ways that might have ended his career today — and nearly did back then.

For a brief time, in 1958, he was a contender to replace Presley as rock’s prime hit maker after Elvis was drafted into the Army. But while Lewis toured in England, the press learned three damaging things: He was married to 13-year-old (possibly even 12-year-old) Myra Gale Brown, she was his cousin, and he was still married to his previous wife. His tour was canceled, he was blacklisted from the radio and his earnings dropped overnight to virtually nothing.

“I probably would have rearranged my life a little bit different, but I never did hide anything from people,” Lewis told the Wall Street Journal in 2014 when asked about the marriage. “I just went on with my life as usual.”

Over the following decades, Lewis struggled with drug and alcohol abuse, legal disputes and physical illness. Two of his many marriages ended in his wife’s early death. Brown herself divorced him in the early 1970s and would later allege physical and mental cruelty that nearly drove her to suicide.

“If I was still married to Jerry, I’d probably be dead by now,” she told People magazine in 1989.

Lewis reinvented himself as a country performer in the 1960s, and the music industry eventually forgave him, long after he stopped having hits. He won three Grammys, and recorded with some of the industry’s greatest stars. In 2006, Lewis came out with “Last Man Standing,” featuring Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, B.B. King and George Jones. In 2010, Lewis brought in Jagger, Keith Richards, Sheryl Crow, Tim McGraw and others for the album “Mean Old Man.”

In “The Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock &amp; Roll,” first published in 1975, he recalled how he convinced disc jockeys to give him a second chance.

“This time I said, ‘Look, man, let’s get together and draw a line on this stuff — a peace treaty you know,’” he explained. Lewis would still play the old hits on stage, but on the radio he would sing country.

Lewis had a run of top 10 country hits between 1967-70, and hardly mellowed at all. He performed drinking songs such as “What’s Made Milwaukee Famous (Has Made a Loser Out of Me)”, the roving eye confessions of “She Still Comes Around” and a dry-eyed cover of a classic ballad of abandonment, “She Even Woke Me Up to Say Goodbye.” He had remained popular in Europe and a 1964 album, “Live at the Star Club, Hamburg,” is widely regarded as one of the greatest concert records.

A 1973 performance proved more troublesome: Lewis sang for the Grand Ole Opry and broke two longstanding rules — no swearing and no non-country songs.

“I am a rock and rollin’, country-and-western, rhythm and blues-singin’ motherf—–,” he told the audience.

Lewis married seven times, and was rarely far from trouble or death. His fourth wife, Jaren Elizabeth Gunn Pate, drowned in a swimming pool in 1982 while suing for divorce. His fifth wife, Shawn Stephens, 23 years his junior, died of an apparent drug overdose in 1983. Within a year, Lewis had married Kerrie McCarver, then 21. She filed for divorce in 1986, accusing him of physical abuse and infidelity. He countersued, but both petitions eventually were dropped. They finally divorced in 2005 after several years of separation. The couple had one child, Jerry Lee III.

Another son by a previous marriage, Steve Allen Lewis, 3, drowned in a swimming pool in 1962, and son Jerry Lee Jr. died in a traffic accident at 19 in 1973. Lewis also had two daughters, Phoebe and Lori Leigh, and his survived by his wife Judith.

His finances were also chaotic. Lewis made millions, but he liked his money in cash and ended up owing hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Internal Revenue Service. When he began welcoming tourists in 1994 to his longtime residence near Nesbit, Mississippi — complete with a piano-shaped swimming pool — he set up a 900 phone number fans could call for a recorded message at $2.75 a minute.

The son of one-time bootlegger Elmo Lewis and the cousin of TV evangelist Jimmy Swaggart and country star Mickey Gilley, Lewis was born in Ferriday, Louisiana. As a boy, he first learned to play guitar, but found the instrument too confining and longed for an instrument that the only the rich people in his town could afford — a piano. His life changed when his father pulled up in his truck one day and presented him a dark-wood, upright set of keyboards.

“My eyes almost fell out of my head,” Lewis recalled in “Jerry Lee Lewis: His Own Story,” written by Rick Bragg and published in 2014.

He took to the piano immediately, and began sneaking off to Black juke joints and absorbing everything from gospel to boogie-woogie. Conflicted early on between secular and scared music, he quit school at 16, with plans of becoming a piano-playing preacher. Lewis briefly attended Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie, Texas, a fundamentalist Bible college, but was expelled, reportedly, for playing the “wrong” kind of music.

“Great Balls of Fire,” a sexualized take on Biblical imagery that Lewis initially refused to record, and “Whole Lotta Shakin’” were his most enduring songs and performance pieces. Lewis had only a handful of other pop hits, including “High School Confidential” and “Breathless,” but they were enough to ensure his place as a rock ‘n’ roll architect.

“I knew it was a hit when I cut it,” he later said. “Sam Phillips thought it was gonna be too risque, it couldn’t make it. If that’s risque, well, I’m sorry.”

In 1986, along with Elvis, Chuck Berry and others, he made the inaugural class of inductees for the Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Fame. The Killer not only outlasted his contemporaries but saw his life and music periodically reintroduced to younger fans, including the the 1989 biopic “Great Balls of Fire,” starring Dennis Quaid, and Ethan Coen’s 2022 documentary “Trouble in Mind.” A 2010 Broadway music, “Million Dollar Quartet,” was inspired by a recording session that featured Lewis, Elvis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash.

He won a Grammy in 1987 as part of an interview album that was cited for best spoken word recording, and he received a lifetime achievement Grammy in 2005. The following year, “Whole Lotta Shakin’” was selected for the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry, whose board praised the “propulsive boogie piano that was perfectly complemented by the drive of J.M. Van Eaton’s energetic drumming. The listeners to the recording, like Lewis himself, had a hard time remaining seated during the performance.”

A classmate at Bible school, Pearry Green, remembered meeting Lewis years later and asking if he was still playing the devil’s music.

“Yes, I am,” Lewis answered. “But you know it’s strange, the same music that they kicked me out of school for is the same kind of music they play in their churches today. The difference is, I know I am playing for the devil and they don’t.”

On Thursday, the Arkansas City Police Department learned of counterfeit bills making their way through vendors and other local businesses during the Arkalalah Festival, according to the police department.

   The bill is similar to others recovered in the community. The paper does feel different from normal currency.  There is an area whited-out on both the front and back of the suspect bills.

Police report more counterfeit cash in Kansas

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Businesses are increasingly worried about the renewed threat of a railroad strike after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-business-strikes-government-and-politics-581babaeee804c37e4761424c02af21a">two unions rejected their deals</a>, and they want the Biden administration and Congress to be ready to intervene.

A coalition of 322 business groups from a variety of industries signed off on a letter to President Joe Biden Thursday urging him to make sure the deals he&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-economy-strikes-congress-94089be6a4f469444da99fec9dde1b3e">helped broker last month</a>&nbsp;get approved because a railroad strike would have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/economy-congress-government-and-politics-a53abd85fa6f8b3ccd622222ea9a4c46">dire consequences</a>&nbsp;for the economy. All 12 rail unions must approve their agreements to prevent a strike next month.

“It is paramount that these contracts now be ratified, as a rail shutdown would have a significant impact on the U.S. economy and lead to further inflationary pressure,” wrote the group, which includes nearly every major trade group and quite a few state business associations.

Biden has been watching the contract dispute closely and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-transportation-strikes-ba718974eb14fcd615d606bfcdffb3d2">appointed</a>&nbsp;a special board of arbitrators this summer to try to help resolve it, but the White House hasn't said whether he will get personally involved again.

The railroads have offered 24% raises and $5,000 in bonuses in the five-year deal, which would be the biggest increases in more than four decades, but the negotiations hinge on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-economy-government-and-politics-207229bcd558b6a6c1d58f3f85e2d804">quality-of-life concerns</a>. The unions that represent the conductors and engineers who drive the trains want the railroads to ease the punishing schedules that they say keep them on call 24-7, and the other unions want the railroads to add paid sick time.

A strike isn’t imminent because the two unions that voted down their deals agreed to retry negotiations before considering a walkout, but the railroads face a Nov. 19 deadline with one of those unions. Six smaller unions have approved their deals while four others are set to vote over the next month, including the two biggest ones and the engineers and conductors in those two unions have the most quality-of-life concerns.

The head of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division union that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-economy-government-and-politics-0744cffe919f0d48fcc02d16c8a298b3">rejected</a>&nbsp;its agreement earlier this month said if the railroads&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/government-and-politics-business-strikes-940da8fc519f8c526ca614e201d01216">won't consider</a>&nbsp;adding sick time he has no choice but to prepare for a strike next month. Union President Tony Cardwell said railroad executives continue to “bow to Wall Street's continued desire for more than its fair share” as they report&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nebraska-omaha-economy-business-483f55c699a94c29f579883e6b87fa85">billions</a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/csx-corp-florida-business-earnings-99976c3154d2939f544c2bdfecc77330">profits</a>.

KANSAS CITY— Kansas City Police Department detectives and the KCPD Crime Lab have determined who was responsible for the double homicide that occurred on or about October 1, in an apartment fire near 41st and Oak in Kansas City, according to Jackson Co. Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.

A Kansas City Police Department investigation established that on Oct. 1, 42-year-old Kevin Ray Moore, now deceased, caused the deaths of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.stowers.org/gradschool/predocs">Camila Behrensen, 24, of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Pablo Guzmán Palma, 25, of Santiago, Chile</a>&nbsp;and intentionally set their apartment on fire. &nbsp;

Due to the efforts of KCPD and, in particular, the Crime Lab, KCPD used phone and computer data, surveillance videos, ballistic testing as well as DNA tests to determine the cause of the deaths of Behrensen and Guzman-Palma and to determine that Moore was the suspect. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Police also determined that Moore died as part of a murder-suicide in Clay County on Oct. 16. Moore and 40-year-old Misty Brockman, a mother of five, were found dead in a car near Worlds of Fun. Police continue to investigate their deaths.

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday denied having any intentions of using nuclear weapons in Ukraine but described the conflict there as part of alleged efforts by the West to secure its global domination, which he insisted are doomed to fail.

Speaking at a conference of international foreign policy experts, Putin said it's pointless for Russia to strike Ukraine with nuclear weapons.

“We see no need for that,” Putin said. “There is no point in that, neither political, nor military.”

Putin said an earlier warning of his readiness to use “all means available to protect Russia” didn’t amount to nuclear saber-rattling but was merely a response to Western statements about their possible use of nuclear weapons.

He particularly mentioned Liz Truss saying in August that she would be ready to use nuclear weapons if she became Britain's prime minister, a remark which he said worried the Kremlin.

“What were we supposed to think?” Putin said. “We saw that as a coordinated position, an attempt to blackmail us.”

In a long speech full of diatribes against the United States and its allies, Putin accused them of trying to dictate their terms to other nations in a “dangerous, bloody and dirty” domination game.

Putin, who sent his troops into Ukraine on Feb. 24, has cast Western support for Ukraine as part of broad efforts by Washington and its allies to enforce its will upon others through a rules-based world order. He argued that the world has reached a turning point, when “the West is no longer able to dictate its will to humankind but still tries to do it, and the majority of nations no longer want to tolerate it.”

The Russian leader claimed that the Western policies will foment more chaos, adding that “he who sows the wind will reap the whirlwind.”

Putin claimed that “humankind now faces a choice: accumulate a load of problems that will inevitably crush us all or try to find solutions that may not be ideal but could work and could make the world more stable and secure.”

Without offering evidence, the Russian leader repeated Moscow’s unproven allegation that Ukraine was plotting a false flag attack involving a radioactive dirty bomb it would try to pin on Russia.

Ukraine has strongly rejected the claim, and its Western allies have dismissed it as “transparently false.” Ukraine argued Russia might be making the unfounded allegation to serve as a cover for its own possible plot to detonate a dirty bomb.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters on Thursday that the U.S. has still not seen anything to indicate that Putin has decided to use a dirty bomb.

Putin said he personally ordered Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu to call his foreign counterparts to tell them about the purported plot. He maintained that Russia knows the Ukrainian facilities working on the project.

He mocked the allegations by Ukraine and the West that Russia was firing on the territory of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in southern Ukraine as “ravings.” Russian troops have occupied the plant, Europe's largest, since the early days of the conflict.

Putin also expressed bewilderment about Washington's policy on China, noting that tensions sparked by a recent visit to Taiwan by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi come amid the U.S.-Russian showdown over Ukraine.

“Why spoil relations with China at the same time?” Putin said. “It seems to defy logic and common sense. It looks like ravings.”

He hailed Russia's relations with China, but said he hadn't warned Chinese President Xi Jinping about his intention to send troops into Ukraine when he visited Beijing days before that to attend the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Asked about Washinton's threat to re-evaluate its relationship with Saudi Arabia over the Riyadh-led OPEC+ alliance's move to cut oil production, Putin argued that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was acting in his nation's interests and the need to stabilize global energy markets.

“They need to respect the crown prince and Saudi Arabia, and they will respond in kind,” Putin said. “And they will also respond in kind if they are spoken to in a boorish manner.”

The Russian leader said Russia isn’t the enemy of the West but will continue to oppose the purported diktat of Western neo-liberal elites, accusing them of trying to subdue Russia.

“Their goal is to make Russia more vulnerable and turn it into an instrument for fulfilling their geopolitical tasks, they have failed to achieve it and they will never succeed,” Putin said.

Putin reaffirmed his long-held claim that Russians and Ukrainians are part of a single people and again denigrated Ukraine as an “artificial state” that received historic Russian lands from Communist rulers during the Soviet times.

In that context, he acknowledged that the fighting in Ukraine effectively amounts to a civil war, although the Kremlin calls its actions in Ukraine a “special military operation.”

Putin said he thinks “all the time” about the casualties that Russia has suffered in Ukraine, but insisted that NATO’s refusal to rule out Ukraine’s prospective membership and Kyiv’s refusal to adhere to a peace deal for its separatist conflict in the country’s east has left Moscow no other choice.

He denied underestimating Ukraine’s ability to fight back and insisted that his “special military operation” has proceeded as planned.

Putin also acknowledged the challenges posed by Western sanctions, but argued that Russia has proven resilient to foreign pressure and has become more united.

John Kirby, a U.S. National Security Council spokesman, responded to Putin’s speech as it was underway.

“We don’t believe that Mr. Putin’s strategic goals have changed here. He doesn’t want Ukraine to exist as a sovereign, independent nation state," Kirby said.

Russia's Putin says he won't use nuclear weapons in Ukraine

KANSAS CITY —A former Kansas City Police Department sergeant, Matthew Neal, 42, pleaded guilty Thursday to felony assault charges for excessive force he used against a Kansas City juvenile in November 2019, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.

A Jackson County judge accepted Neal’s plea of guilty. Neal agreed he cannot carry a firearm and he would surrender his post license required to be a police officer, complete an anger management class, have no contact with the victim or his family and would send a written apology to the victim. Those were conditions of his 4-year probation.

Neal’s attorney told the court that Neal had resigned from the Kansas City police department yesterday.

The victim in this case did not make an appearance because of his strong interest in maintaining his privacy, Deputy Prosecutor Dion Sankar told the court. "The state remains in communication with the (young) victim in this case…The state would note that the victim thanks this court and others for the work put into this case. He fully supports this outcome and the finality it will bring."

This case was not charged by way of complaint using a probable cause statement. Rather, Neal was charged by Jackson County citizens who served on the grand jury by way of indictment.&nbsp;This office thanks the local and federal law enforcement agencies who assisted in this matter.

In 2020, during her announcement of the charges, Baker noted, “I hope all involved in this case and our community will rally around this victim and support him.” &nbsp;Today, the office asks for the community's continued support of this young man.

Six people, including Reid, were injured in the crash.In court, Reid acknowledged he was drinking on the night of the crash.“I really regret what I did,” Reid said. “I made a huge mistake. I apologize to the family. I didn't mean to hurt anyone.”Tom Pardo, an attorney representing Ariel's family, said they opposed the plea deal.“The five victims of this crime are outraged,” Pardo said. “The prosecuting attorney is not seeking maximum sentence allowable by law. The defendant is a prior offender whose actions caused a 5-year-old girl to be in a coma and seriously injured three others.”A Kansas City police officer who arrived at the scene of the crash reported he could smell alcohol and that Reid’s eyes were bloodshot, according to court documents. Reid had a blood-alcohol level of 0.113 two hours after the crash, police said. The legal limit is 0.08.One of the vehicles he hit had stalled because of a dead battery and the second was owned by Ariel’s mother, who had arrived to help.The Chiefs reached a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-sports-health-business-football-b79b53869eb2a017e1e41623ac5abb58">confidential agreement</a>&nbsp;with Ariel's family in November to pay for her ongoing medical treatment and other expenses.Reid underwent emergency surgery for a groin injury after the crash. The Chiefs placed Reid on administrative leave and his job with the team ended after his contract was allowed to expire.This is not the first legal issue for Reid, who graduated from a drug treatment program in Pennsylvania in 2009 after a series of run-ins with law enforcement. His father was coach of the Philadelphia Eagles at the time.Britt Reid's older brother, Garrett, served a two-year sentence in a Pennsylvania state drug program after he was arrested on drug-related charges. Garrett Reid later was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/philadelphia-eagles-nfl-sports-archive-philadelphia-22c3d437603141f0ae97ae96ff1103a6">found dead</a>&nbsp;in August 2012 in his dorm room at Lehigh University, where he was assisting at the Eagles' training camp. Prison or probation: Sentencing for ex-Chiefs assistant for DWI crash

FINNEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent knife attack at a McDonald's in Garden City and have a suspect in custody.

Just after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday,&nbsp; police were dispatched to the McDonald's 1106 N. Taylor Avenue in Garden City for a fight in progress, according to a media release.

Upon arrival, officers located a woman and two men standing outside of the business and learned one of the men had been stabbed.

The investigation revealed that the three individuals were shopping in Garden City when they were confronted by a man known to them, identified as 33-year-old Adam Barnett of Scott City.

 The three individuals fled the confrontation in their vehicle with Barnett attempting to follow them. The three&nbsp; believed they had lost Barnett and stopped to eat at McDonald’s West. 

Barnett arrived at McDonald’s a short time later, exited his vehicle with a knife in his hand and began walking towards the restaurant.

 The two men met Barnett in the parking lot, and a physical altercation ensued. The fight continued inside the business near the restroom where the woman was hiding. 

One of the men attempted to stop Barnett from entering the restroom when Barnett stabbed him. 

The fight was broken up, and Barnett then fled the area in his vehicle. EMS transported the 32-year-old male stabbing victim to St. Catherine Hospital, where he was treated and released for his injury. 

Police later located Barnett and took into custody on requested charges of Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault, Stalking and Criminal Use of a Weapon.&nbsp;No other injuries were reported from the incident, according to police.

That's the word from Lieutenant Governor David Toland during an exclusive interview with Salina Post earlier this week.

Toland noted not only the growth and vibrance of downtown Salina, but also the growth in local manufacturing and housing starts."We've been really proud, Governor Kelly and I, to have been partners with the Salina community in all of this growth, and we think that the future's very bright, and we're going to continue with the same approach and policy to economic development and to community development that we've had from the start," Toland said. "We think that that is going to continue to bring rich dividends for the Salina community."School fundingToland also talked about some of the accomplishments of the administration's first term."Since I work for the Education Governor, I would be remiss if I didn't start with fully funding our K-12 system for the last four years in a row and getting the state out of the cycle of litigation about underfunding that had really bedeviled us for over 20 years," Toland said."We're proud of the investments we've made in our K-12 system, but also in higher education, and that includes K-State Salina and the amazing programs that are happening there," he said.Toland also noted new investments in the state's community colleges and technical colleges.Economic developmentAt the state level, there has been more than $14 billion of new investment that has occurred since Kelly took office in January of 2019, including 52,000 new and retained jobs, Toland said."You look at Salina specifically, there have been over 1,300 new jobs created under the Kelly administration. That's 1,323 to be specific. And we've had $687.4 million of private business investment that has happened in Saline County since 2019," he said."When you look at the variety of things that have happened in Salina specifically, you know, from Schwans, where the largest frozen pizza plant in the world is going to open next week to Great Plains Manufacturing, which has taken over the Phillips Lighting facility, is just such a great opportunity to really grow the Kubota footprint in Kansas," Toland continued. "There's so much room for growth in that massive facility."Toland also talked about 1 Vision Aviation at the Salina Regional Airport as an example of growth in Salina, noting how 1 Vision Aviation was able to utilize the assets of the airport in creating new jobs and new investment."It's so healthy to have this kind of diversity, from food processing to advanced manufacturing to maintenance, repair, and overhaul for aviation. It's really a good sign about the health of the Salina economy that you've had this kind of diversity of growth," he said.Axing the food taxGetting legislation passed to eliminate the state's sales tax on groceries is also listed among the Kelly administration's accomplishments."We're really proud that we were able to ax the food tax. And this is both an accomplishment and a to-do for January because axing the food tax got through, but it's on a schedule that takes it a couple of years out before it's actually eliminated, and that's because Derek Schmidt's allies in the legislature didn't want to give Governor Kelly a win in an election year, and so they were playing politics with people's grocery bills," Toland said."And so, Priority One along with Medicaid expansion in our second term is going to be immediately axing the food tax so that it takes effect hopefully in January, so that we can give some relief to families that are really struggling and seniors in particular who are on fixed incomes," he said.InfrastructureAccording to Toland, there are more than 1,000 highway construction projects that currently are underway across the state."You know, coming to Salina on I-70, there are an awful lot of orange barrels, and that's a good thing. It means that we've stopped the raid of the 'Bank of KDOT' that happened under the Brownback administration, all these transfers of money that Derek Schmidt supported, and we've been able to fully fund the infrastructure we need," Toland said.Additionally, as part of the IKE Transportation Plan through the Kansas Department of Transportation, funding is available to increase broadband internet offerings in the state."We're really proud that there are 55,000 new households and businesses that have been connected to high-speed internet in the last 18 months," he said."When you think about those kinds of investements, and then you think about how Derek Schmidt says he wants to get in and start slashing and cutting, you know, he's going to be cutting broadband. He's going to be cutting economic development. He's going to be cutting the highway program. And these are things that the voters have made clear are important to them and they don't want to see us go down that road again," Toland said.Republican supportAs campaigning for the upcoming election has progressed, a number of well-known Republicans have come out in support of the Kelly-Toland ticket. Those Republicans include former Kansas governors Bill Graves and Mike Hayden, former U.S. senators from Kansas Nancy Kassebaum and Sheila Frahm, former U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister, former Republican National Committee Committeewoman Alicia Salisbury, and former Kansas Attorney General Robert Stephan."I think it reflects who the governor and I are as people. We are centrist, concensus builders who work to find common ground and who don't worry so much about party labels. We worry about getting the public policy right and doing things that not only help people in the here and now, but really set up the next generation for success," Toland said.He continued, "Ultimately, I think the reason we've got such strong Republican support across the state is that folks see that Governor Kelly is a middle-of-the-road governor who works to craft sound public policy and isn't worried about party labels. She's worried about getting it right."No drag party fundingRecently, the British tabloid The Daily Mail falsely claimed that the Kansas Department of Commerce and its Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission (KCAIC), provided funding for drag shows in Wichita. A poster for one of the shows included the Department of Commerce/KCAIC logo.Members of the GOP, including Kelly's gubernatorial opponent Derek Schmidt, expressed outrage over the alleged funding, which the Kelly administration quickly debunked as false.READ:&nbsp;Kan. GOP seize on false report about drag show to attack GovernorWhen asked about the issue, Toland said, "It's just flat out not true. It didn't happen," calling the incident a "classic, late October political dirty trick."OpenStudios, the sponsor of one of the Wichita events, also noted that no state funds were to be used for the event. In a post on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/OpenStudiosICT">its Facebook page</a>, Open Studios wrote, "You may have noticed we had to erase a few posts about the event because of some (frustrating) marketing miscommunications. After a few inquiries, we’d like to clarify that the KCAIC is not sponsoring this event. Their logo was placed on former posters because of their relationship with Fisch Bowl Inc., who hosts the OpenStudios spaces at Towne West. No state funds were used in support of this event."
