WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump stunned the Pentagon and the broader defense world by nominating Fox News host Pete Hegseth&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/who-is-pete-hegseth-trump-defense-secretary-2e2bdd16c8e90f5d037f763cfadbde94">to serve as his defense secretary</a>, tapping someone largely inexperienced and untested on the global stage to take over the world's largest and most powerful military.

The news was met with bewilderment and worry among many in Washington as Trump passed on a number of established&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-defense-secretary-pentagon-nomination-59657362d8bb5b6bf245def8611e7a0f">national security heavy-hitters</a>&nbsp;and chose an Army National Guard major well known in conservative circles as a co-host of Fox News Channel’s “Fox &amp; Friends Weekend.”

While some Republican lawmakers had a muted response to the announcement, others called his combat experience an asset or said he was “tremendously capable.”

Hegseth's choice could bring&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-transition-white-house-staff-huckabee-f51121db5b18814bbab014e872c2a736">sweeping changes to the military.</a>&nbsp;He has made it clear on his show and in interviews that, like Trump, he is opposed to “woke” programs that promote equity and inclusion. He also has questioned the role of women in combat and advocated pardoning service members charged with war crimes.

In June, at a rally in Las Vegas, Trump encouraged his supporters to buy Hegseth’s book and said that if he won the presidency, "The woke stuff will be gone within a period of 24 hours. I can tell you.”

The 44-year-old Hegseth, a staunch conservative who embraces Trump's “America First” policies, has pushed for making the military more lethal. During an interview on “The Shawn Ryan Show” podcast, he said allowing women to serve in combat hurts that effort.

“Everything about men and women serving together makes the situation more complicated, and complication in combat, that means casualties are worse,” Hegseth said.

And while he said diversity in the military is a strength, he said it was because minority and white men can perform similarly, but the same isn't true for women.

By opening combat slots to women, “we’ve changed the standards in putting them there, which means you’ve changed the capability of that unit,” Hegseth said in the podcast interview.

Since then-Defense Secretary Ash Carter opened all combat roles to women in 2016, women have successfully passed the military's grueling tests to become&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/army-special-operations-gender-bias-female-sexism-1c904cba739b8ba3720827bd9e77f5f4">Green Berets and Army Rangers</a>, and the Naval Special Warfare's test to serve as a&nbsp;<a href="https://newsroom.ap.org/the%20boat%20operators%20who%20transport%20Navy%20SEALs%20and%20conduct%20their%20own%20classified%20missions%20at%20sea.">combatant-craft crewman</a>&nbsp;— the boat operators who transport Navy SEALs and conduct their own classified missions at sea.

While Trump lauded Hegseth as “tough, smart and a true believer in America First,” others were quick to point to the TV personality's lack of experience. Some suggested he could be Pentagon chief in name only as the Trump White House runs the department.

A number of other names floated as possible defense choices had included Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Ala., chairman of the House Armed Services Committee; retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg; Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa; and Robert Wilkie, a former Pentagon official who was head of the Department of Veterans Affairs in Trump's first term.

“There is reason for concern that this is not a person who is a serious enough policymaker, serious enough policy implementer, to do a successful job,” said Rep. Adam Smith of Washington, the ranking Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee.

Mark Cancian, a senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said Hegseth's lack of senior national security experience makes it more difficult to get Senate confirmation.

“I think Trump was tired of fighting with his secretaries of defense and picked one who would be loyal to him,” Cancian said.

Military officials said the choice came out of the blue. A senior military officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media, said Hegseth's selection is raising concerns about whether he has the practical experience to manage a large department with an enormous budget.

The Defense Department has a budget exceeding $800 billion, with about 1.3 million active-duty troops and another 1.4 million in the National Guard, Reserves and civilian employees based worldwide.

If confirmed, Hegseth would face a daunting array of global crises, from the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/mideast-wars">wars in the Middle East</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/russia-ukraine">Ukraine</a>&nbsp;and the expanding&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/south-korea-north-korea-troops-russia-ukraine-9ee96dc1d4f07ac0813c698e6873f96b">alliance between Russia and North Korea</a>&nbsp;to the growing competition with China. There is also the need to upgrade the complex U.S. missile and nuclear defense apparatus and ensure the defense industry can keep up with America's need for weapons systems.

Smith said that while Hegseth's combat experience is a plus, running the Pentagon requires a lot of other skill sets, and his nomination will need some time for consideration.

“What’s your plan? What are you going to do? ... How can you assure us that that lack of experience, you know, isn’t going to make it impossible for you to do the job?” Smith said. “I think those are questions that need to be answered over the next couple of months.”

Even some Republicans in the Senate, who would vote on his nomination, had a subdued response.

North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis called the choice “interesting.” Indiana Sen. Todd Young, who served in the Marine Corps, said, “I don’t know much about his background or his vision, so I look forward to learning more.”

North Dakota Sen. John Hoeven said he’s not surprised that Trump chose Hegseth because Trump is “close to him and likes him and trusts him.”

“The guy’s obviously tremendously capable, a great communicator," Hoeven said. "I look forward to getting to know him better.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said Hegseth brings a lot to the table and will be "reform-minded in the areas that need reform.”

According to the Army, Hegseth served in the Guard from 2002 to 2021 as an infantry officer, but is not currently serving. He deployed to Iraq in 2005, Afghanistan in 2011 and to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in 2004. He has two Bronze Stars.

He has been a contributor since 2014 for Fox News, developing a friendship with Trump, who made regular appearances on his show. He is the author of “The War on Warriors: Behind the Betrayal of the Men Who Keep Us Free.”

“With Pete at the helm, America’s enemies are on notice — Our Military will be Great Again, and America will Never Back Down,” Trump said in a statement. “Nobody fights harder for the Troops, and Pete will be a courageous and patriotic champion of our ‘Peace through Strength’ policy.”

Trump's choice for Secretary of Defense stuns the Pentagon

SMITH COUNTY –&nbsp;A man was convicted and sentenced in Smith County&nbsp; following a Kansas Bureau of Investigation case, according to a media release from the agency.

Smith County Attorney, Tabitha Owen, announced that a Smith County man 29-year-old Colter J. Ducote has been sentenced to seven presumptive life sentences after being convicted by a jury on seven counts of Jessica’s Law child sexual abuse charges. 

On Aug. 12, 2024, a Smith County jury trial convened and concluded on Aug. 14, 2024 with the guilty verdict.&nbsp;

The case was investigated by the KBI after a request for assistance from the Smith County Sheriff’s Office on July 24, 2023. A Special Agent assigned to the KBI West Child Victims Unit led the investigation regarding allegations that Ducote had committed the sexual abuse of a child under the age of 14. Ducote was convicted of seven counts of child sexual abuse, including; rape, aggravated criminal sodomy, and aggravated indecent liberties with a child. The victim was 11 years old when she reported the sexual abuse by Ducote beginning at the age of six.

On October 31, Ducote was sentenced to a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years-to-life on each of the seven counts of conviction; two counts will be served consecutively for a mandatory term of 50 years-to-life.

NW Kansas man sentenced for child sex crimes

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President-elect&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;chose Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida to serve as his attorney general on Wednesday, bypassing more experienced options in favor of a loyalist who has built a national reputation as a disruptor and has pledged to dramatically overhaul the Justice Department.

Trump also announced that he had tapped Sen.&nbsp;<a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/112752631378869022">Marco Rubio</a>&nbsp;of Florida as his nominee for secretary of state. And he selected Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democratic member of Congress and presidential candidate, to serve as his director of national intelligence.

The choices continued a pattern of Trump stocking his Cabinet with loyalists he believes he can trust to execute his agenda rather than longtime officials with experience in their fields. Gaetz's selection, in particular, was seen as a shock. The Florida lawmaker was not among the more established attorneys who had been mentioned as contenders for the job.

Trump announced the decision in a post in his Truth Social network, saying that, “Matt will end Weaponized Government, protect our Borders, dismantle Criminal Organizations and restore Americans’ badly-shattered Faith and Confidence in the Justice Department."

Gaetz represents much of the Florida Panhandle and became a conservative star when he joined Congress, appearing as a frequent staunch defender of Trump on cable news.

He irked fellow GOP members in early 2023 when he filed the resolution that successfully ousted former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. McCarthy then helped fund a primary challenge to Gaetz that included commercials alleging that he paid for sex with a 17-year-old, an allegation currently investigated by the House Ethics Committee. Gaetz has denied any wrongdoing. The Justice Department ended its own sex trafficking investigation without bringing charges against him.

Even Trump’s allies in the Senate are keeping their distance from Gaetz.

“We’ll see,” said Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin when asked whether he would vote to confirm the congressman.

Sen. John Cornyn, a Texas Republican, suggested that the Senate would look closely into Gaetz, including the House Ethics Committee investigation.

“I’m sure it will make for a popcorn-eating confirmation hearing,” said GOP Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina.

The announcement came shortly after Trump confirmed that he had picked Rubio, a conservative lawmaker, as the nation’s top diplomat. A onetime critic who evolved into one of the president-elect’s fiercest defenders, Rubio, who will become the first Latino in the job, is a noted hawk on China, Cuba and Iran, and was a finalist to be Trump’s running mate this summer.

On Capitol Hill, Rubio is the vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He has pushed for taking a harder line against China and has targeted social media app TikTok because its parent company is Chinese. He and other lawmakers contend that Beijing could demand access to the data of users whenever it wants.

“He will be a strong Advocate for our Nation, a true friend to our Allies, and a fearless Warrior who will never back down to our adversaries,” Trump said of Rubio in a statement.

Trump made the announcement while flying back back to Florida from Washington after meeting with President Joe Biden.

The president-elect had been expected to pick Rubio for the post, but had also faced pressure from allies of Ric Grenell, who served as acting director of national intelligence during Trump’s first administration.

Grenell responded to the news on on X, writing, “Congratulations, Senator. You will be great for America!”

The selection is the culmination of a long, complicated history between Trump and Rubio. During their tense competition for the GOP presidential nomination in 2016, Rubio was especially blunt in his criticism of Trump, calling him a “con artist” and “the most vulgar person to ever aspire to the presidency.”

He tried to match Trump’s often-crude attacks by joking about the size of Trump’s hands in a reference to his manhood. Trump responded by branding Rubio as “little Marco,” a nickname that stuck with the senator for years.

But like many Republicans who sought to maintain their relevance in the Trump era, Rubio shifted his rhetoric. As speculation intensified that Trump might pick him as his running mate, Rubio sought to play down the tension from 2016, suggesting the heated tone simply reflected the intensity of a campaign.

“That is like asking a boxer why they punched somebody in the face in the third round,” Rubio told CNN when asked about his previous comments. “It’s because they were boxing.”

Rubio was first elected to the Senate in 2010 as part of the tea party wave of Republicans who swept into Washington. He quickly gained a reputation as someone who could embody a more diverse, welcoming Republican Party. He was a key member of a group that worked on a 2013 immigration bill that included a path to citizenship for millions of people in the country illegally.

But that legislation stalled in the House, where more conservative Republicans were in control, signaling the sharp turn to the right that the party — and Rubio — would soon embrace. Now, Rubio says he supports Trump’s plan to deploy the U.S. military to deport those in the country illegally.

“We are going to have to do something, unfortunately, we’re going to have to do something dramatic,” Rubio said in a May interview with NBC.

Gabbard, meanwhile, will to serve as director of national intelligence.

“As a former Candidate for the Democrat Presidential Nomination, she has broad support in both Parties - She is now a proud Republican!” Trump said in a statement. “I know Tulsi will bring the fearless spirit that has defined her illustrious career to our Intelligence Community, championing our Constitutional Rights, and securing Peace through Strength. Tulsi will make us all proud!”

Both Vice President-elect JD Vance and Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr. had been advocating for Gabbard to get a position in the administration, after she grew close with them during the campaign.

She helped prepare Trump for his debate against Vice President Kamala Harris, announced she was becoming a Republican at a Trump rally during the race’s final stretch, and received huge cheers from his crowds at events.

Gabbard, who has served in the Army National Guard for more than two decades, deploying to Iraq and Kuwait, would come to the role as somewhat of an outsider, compared to her predecessor. The current director, Avril Haines, was confirmed by the Senate in 2021 following several years in a number of top national security and intelligence positions.

Gabbard hasn’t worked directly in the intelligence community, outside of House committees, including two years on the Homeland Security Committee. Like others Trump has selected for his agency leadership, she has been among his most popular political surrogates, often drawing thunderous responses from crowds as she stumped for him in the campaign’s closing months.

Earlier Wednesday, Trump announced that four longtime aides would be joining his administration as well.

Longtime aide Dan Scavino, who first worked for Trump as caddy at one of his golf courses and later became his social media guru, will serve as a deputy chief of staff. James Blair, the campaign’s political director, will serve as as deputy chief of staff for legislative, political and public affairs. And Taylor Budowich, who ran the pro-Trump Super PAC, Maga Inc., before joining the campaign, will be deputy chief of staff for communications and personnel. All will have the rank of assistant to the president.

Trump also formally announced Stephen Miller, an immigration hard-liner and another of Trump’s longest-serving aides, will be deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security adviser.

The break-ins, which were first reported by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tmz.com/2024/11/12/patrick-mahomes-travis-kelce-homes-burglarized/">TMZ,</a>&nbsp;happened just before and the day of the Chiefs’&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/saints-chiefs-score-7b5412c1594d73113111336074ee5ade">26-13 home victory</a>&nbsp;over the New Orleans Saints on Oct. 7, as Kelce’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-taylor-swift-travis-kelce-arrowhead-b386bd5deb5b6588f255d62068417cae">superstar girlfriend Taylor Swift</a>&nbsp;watched from the stands. No injuries were reported in either case.

One day before the Monday night game, law enforcement was called to a home matching Mahomes' address in a private gated resort-like community in northwestern Cass County, just to the south of the city's metropolitan area.

Mahomes said he couldn’t provide many details because the investigation is ongoing. He described it as “something you don’t want to happen to anybody and obviously yourself.”

His name isn’t listed on the sheriff's office report, which The Associated Press obtained. The single-page document shows another person called just after midnight on Oct. 6 to report what was classified as a burglary. It didn't describe any missing items.

Ronnie Lozano, a spokesman for the sheriff's department, wrote in an email that the investigation is active and declined to answer other questions, including whether there had been any arrests. The prosecutor for the county didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Around 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 7, as the Chiefs played the Saints at Arrowhead Stadium, a home matching the address of Kelce's was broken into in the affluent suburb of Leawood, just over the state line in Kansas. The crime wasn't reported until early the next morning, an offense report obtained from police by the AP shows.

Kelce’s name isn’t listed in the report, which said losses included $20,000 in cash and damage to a rear door. The 16,000-square-foot (1,440 square meter) home includes a wine cellar, backyard pool and six-car garage.

“The Leawood Police Department does not comment about specific victims of crimes except in the case of fatality crashes or homicides,” police Capt. Jason Ahring said in an email.

Melody Webb, a spokeswoman for the area's Johnson County prosecutor's office, said in an email that the office had no comment.

Documents posted Wednesday on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website say a transmission control valve can wear out over time. In rare cases it can fail and lock up the rear wheels. Drivers may notice harsh shifting before any wheel problems.

GM says in documents that dealers will install new transmission control software that will monitor the valve and detect excess wear 10,000 miles before the wheels lock up. If wear is detected, the transmission will be limited to fifth gear, preventing wheel lockup, which happens when the transmission downshifts from eighth gear.

GM will provide warranty coverage to fix transmissions that have a defective control valve.

Owners will be notified of the recall by letter on Dec. 9.

WASHINGTON (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;made a victor’s return to Washington on Wednesday, visiting the White House for an Oval Office meeting with President Joe Biden and committing to a smooth transition of power as the president-elect moves quickly to build out his new administration.

Sitting in front of a crackling fire, the rivals shook hands in the Oval Office as reporters looked on. Biden called Trump "Mr. President-elect and former president” before settling on “Donald.”

“Congratulations,” the Democrat told the Republican. “I look forward to having, like they said, a smooth transition,” Biden said. “Welcome. Welcome back.”

Trump replied, “Thank you very much," saying that “politics is tough. And it’s, in many cases, not a very nice world. But it is a nice world today, and I appreciate it very much.”

Neither man answered questions shouted by the media. At one point, Biden looked at Trump, who moved his head to the side and gave a small shrug but did not respond. Each was joined by his chief of staff for the private meeting that is a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-biden-white-house-meeting-awkward-obama-6ad7c112e2e1af6ff4fe2ebb4117eef5">traditional part of the peaceful handoff of power</a>, but a ritual that Trump declined to participate in four years ago after losing to Biden.

First lady Jill Biden greeted Trump upon his arrival at the White House and gave him a handwritten letter of congratulations for his wife, Melania Trump, who did not make the trip to Washington. The letter also expressed the first lady's team’s readiness to assist with the transition.

As Trump met with Biden, Trump sent out a fundraising email to supporters saying that he "is inside the White House right now conducting a very important meeting.”

Trump had flown from Florida in the morning, joining up with billionaire&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/elon-musk">Elon Musk</a>&nbsp;for a morning session with House Republicans. That discussion came as Trump prepares for a potentially unified Republican government and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/congress-senate-leadership-elections-house-trump-82730f474a365a0d6e6af78a84bceda7">sweep of power</a>.

Back in Washington for the first time since his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/election-2024">election victory</a>, Trump told the GOP lawmakers, “It’s nice to win.”

He received a standing ovation from House GOP members, many of whom took cellphone videos of Trump as ran through their party's victories up and down the ballot, in what would be, under the constitutional limits, his final presidential election.

“I suspect I won’t be running again unless you say he’s good we got to figure something else,” Trump said to laughter from the lawmakers.

It’s a stunning return to the seat of America's government for the former president, who departed Washington in January 2021 a diminished, politically defeated leader after the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/projects/january-6-cases/">attack on the Capitol.</a>&nbsp;Today, he is preparing to come back to power with what he and his GOP allies see as a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-day-1-priorities-deportations-drilling-ukraine-6747c6e64b0440978f59450b928f61d1">mandate for governance</a>.

“He is the comeback king,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., before Trump’s arrival. “We owe him a great debt of gratitude.”

The private meetings, including his sit-down with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/joe-biden">Biden</a>, put in stark relief the former president’s remarkable political rebound. The reemergence comes amid Republican congressional leadership elections — with the potential for him to place his imprint on the outcome.

Trump endorsed Johnson's return to the speaker's office with the president-elect saying he is with Johnson all the way, according to a person familiar with the remarks but not authorized to publicly discuss the private meeting.

Musk joining Trump on the return to Washington comes after the Tesla and SpaceX CEO has been spending much of his time at Mar-a-Lago, Trump's Florida estate, and participating in discussions as the incoming Trump administration prepares to transition from Biden's.

Trump has named Musk to a government efficiency advisory role in his incoming administration. Some close to Trump and his team now see Musk as the second most influential figure in Trump’s immediate orbit, after Susie Wiles, the campaign manager who is Trump's incoming chief of staff.

After his election win in 2016, Trump met with President Barack Obama in the Oval Office and called it “a great honor." But he soon was back to heaping insults on Obama, including accusing his predecessor — without evidence — of having&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/1b2637860b2042c48b18a26951437d5d">wire-tapped him</a>&nbsp;during the 2016 campaign.

Four years later, Trump disputed his election loss to Biden, and he has continued to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-2020-election-lies-debunked-4fc26546b07962fdbf9d66e739fbb50d">lie</a>&nbsp;about&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/voter-fraud-election-2020-joe-biden-donald-trump-7fcb6f134e528fee8237c7601db3328f">widespread voter fraud that did not occur</a>. He didn't invite Biden, then the president-elect, to the White House and he left Washington without attending&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-donald-trump-inaugurations-302e242646b2bec9838b5e8d9950d164">Biden's inauguration.</a>&nbsp;It was the first time that had happened since Andrew Johnson skipped Ulysses S. Biden insists that he'll do everything he can to make the transition to the next Trump administration go smoothly. That's despite having spent more than a year campaigning for reelection and decrying Trump as a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/president-joe-biden-donald-trump-democracy-arizona-788d5203b3ac970dbf6b71ca74d6b386">threat to democracy and the nation’s core values.</a>&nbsp;Biden then&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-drops-out-2024-election-ddffde72838370032bdcff946cfc2ce6">bowed out of the race</a>&nbsp;in July and endorsed Vice President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/kamala-harris">Kamala Harris</a>&nbsp;to succeed him.

Traditionally, as the outgoing and incoming presidents meet in the West Wing, the first lady hosts her successor upstairs in the residence, But her office said Melania Trump wasn't attending, saying in a statement that “her husband’s return to the Oval Office to commence the transition process is encouraging, and she wishes him great success.”

When Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-leaves-white-house-ad718c0048c341d0044c4709fb23c8dd">left Washington</a>&nbsp;in 2021, even some top Republicans had begun to decry his role in helping incite a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/capitol-siege">mob of his supporters</a>&nbsp;that had staged the violent attack on the Capitol mere weeks earlier, trying to stop the certification of Biden’s election victory.

Wednesday's trip was not the first time Trump has returned to the Capitol area since the end of his first term, though. Congressional Republicans hosted Trump over the summer, as Trump was again solidifying his dominance over the party.

In last week's election, Republicans wrested the Senate majority from Democrats and are on the cusp of keeping control of the House, are in the midst of their own&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-senate-thune-cornyn-scott-republican-leadership-2a711f260887926676bb5d69866a1981">leadership elections</a>&nbsp;happening behind closed doors Wednesday. Johnson has pulled ever-closer to Trump as he worked to keep his majority — and his own job with the gavel.

It's unclear whether Trump will also visit the Senate, which is entangled in a more divisive closed-door leadership election in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/senate-republicans-leadership-mcconnell-thune-cornyn-scott-d17b341874cb6627f1d75d7051feebe4">three-way race</a>&nbsp;to replace outgoing GOP Leader Mitch McConnell.

On November 7, Samantha Jo Smith pled guilty to an amended complaint filed in in Finney County District Court for conspiracy to commit robbery&nbsp; according to the Finney County Attorney's office.&nbsp; &nbsp;The conspiracy involved Smith and Marcus Roady, who is now deceased in connection with the 2019 death of Charles Ernest 'Ernie' Ortiz.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;In September 2019, Ernie Ortiz was found shot outside of his family restaurant in Garden City and he later died at the hospital. It is believed Ortiz was shot during a robbery after he closed the business for the night.

On September 6 of 2023, U.S. Marshals arrested Smith in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in connection with crime.

A statement from the Finney County Attorney's office said they recognize the death of Mr. Ortiz was devastating to the family, friends and community. As victims, the family has been involved throughout all phases of the investigation and prosecution of Samantha Smith. As prosecutors, it is our duty to ensure justice is fair and commensurate with crimes committed by parties charges. It this instance, the amendment of the complaint to a reduced charge of conspiracy to commit robbery took into consideration all facts and circumstances known by law enforcement and the county attorney at the time of the plea.

The case remains an open and ongoing investigation, according to the Garden City Police Department. Anyone with information about the case, is asked to call Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or the Garden City Police Department Criminal Investigations Division.

Smith is scheduled for sentencing December 4.

Woman enters plea to lesser charge in SW Kansas robbery, murder

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans have elected South Dakota Sen.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/john-thune">John Thune</a>&nbsp;as the next Senate majority leader, completing a momentous shift in their leadership that elevates a top deputy of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/mitch-mcconnell">Mitch McConnell</a>&nbsp;into a key position as President-elect&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;returns to the White House.

Thune, 63, is in his fourth Senate term and has promised to work closely with Trump, despite differences the two have had over the years, and will be a crucial part of the incoming president’s efforts to push through his policy agenda.

In a statement, Thune said he was “extremely honored to have earned the support of my colleagues.”

“This Republican team is united behind President Trump’s agenda, and our work starts today,” he said.

Thune beat out two other competitors, Sens.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/john-cornyn">John Cornyn</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/rick-scott">Rick Scott</a>, by gaining majority support from GOP senators in a secret ballot vote in two rounds of voting. Scott was eliminated on the first round and the final vote between Thune and Cornyn was 29-24, according to several people who requested anonymity to discuss the private meeting.

Republicans are replacing McConnell, the longest serving Senate party leader, as they prepare to take majority control of the Senate with the 53 seats they won in last week’s elections.

Much of the campaign centered around the candidates' relationship with Trump. Thune has worked to smooth his over after breaking publicly with Trump over the effort to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, which he called “inexcusable.”

In recent months, Thune has realigned with Trump, visiting him in his Florida home, and the two have been consulting on how to implement the incoming president’s agenda. Thune&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ap.org/news-highlights/spotlights/2024/john-thune-is-striving-to-be-the-next-republican-senate-leader-but-can-he-rise-in-trumps-gop/">told The Associated Press</a>&nbsp;over the summer that he views their potential relationship as a professional one. If they both win their elections, Thune said, “we’ve got a job to do.”

As he made his case, Thune also made clear that he would listen to Trump's demands. SHAWNEE COUNTY —Authorities investigating a fatal house fire in Topeka have identified the victim&nbsp;as 46-year-old David S. Blevens of Topeka.

Investigators determined the cause of this fire was intentionally set,&nbsp;according to Topeka Fire Department spokesperson Rosie Nichols.&nbsp; The incident is being investigated as a homicide.&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Just after 6p.m. Oct. 13, crews from the Topeka Fire Department&nbsp; responded to a reported house fire at 1640 SW Buchanan Street.

Firs responders found heavy smoke and flames coming from the two-story residence. Firefighters performed a search and found Blevens on the second floor of the residence who was later pronounced deceased. 

Crews extinguished the fire. Investigators have not reported an arrest.

Police ID victim in arson fire at Kansas home

WASHINGTON (AP) — A man who worked for the U.S. government has been charged with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-iran-us-documents-attack-e7e23d09a2f1fc14498e64b38d74576f">leaking classified information</a>&nbsp;assessing Israel's earlier plans to attack Iran, according to court papers filed Wednesday.

The man, identified as Asif William Rahman, was arrested by the FBI this week in Cambodia and was due to make his first court appearance in Guam.

He was indicted last week in U.S. court in Virginia on two counts of willful transmission of national defense information — felony charges that can can carry significant prison sentences.

It was not immediately clear whether Rahman had a lawyer or which federal agency employed him, but officials say he had top secret security clearance.

The charges stem from the documents, attributed to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nga.mil/index.html">National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nsa.gov/">National Security Agency</a>, appearing last month on a channel of the Telegram messaging app. The documents noted that Israel was still moving military assets in place to conduct a military strike in response to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-lebanon-hezbollah-gaza-news-10-01-2024-eb175dff6e46906caea8b9e43dfbd3da">Iran’s blistering ballistic missile attack</a>&nbsp;on Oct. 1.

Israel carried out a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-attack-israel-strikes-mideast-war-tehran-35a2b1474e5feedbb200c3aaa557fe60">retaliatory attack on multiple sites in Iran</a>&nbsp;in late October.

The documents were sharable within the “Five Eyes,” which are the United States, Britain, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

The New York Times was first to report his arrest.

 </figure>WASHINGTON (AP) — A man who worked for the U.S. government has been charged with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-iran-us-documents-attack-e7e23d09a2f1fc14498e64b38d74576f">leaking classified information</a>&nbsp;assessing Israel's earlier plans to attack Iran, according to court papers filed Wednesday.The man, identified as Asif William Rahman, was arrested by the FBI this week in Cambodia and was due to make his first court appearance in Guam.He was indicted last week in U.S. court in Virginia on two counts of willful transmission of national defense information — felony charges that can can carry significant prison sentences.It was not immediately clear whether Rahman had a lawyer or which federal agency employed him, but officials say he had top secret security clearance.The charges stem from the documents, attributed to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nga.mil/index.html">National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nsa.gov/">National Security Agency</a>, appearing last month on a channel of the Telegram messaging app. The documents noted that Israel was still moving military assets in place to conduct a military strike in response to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-lebanon-hezbollah-gaza-news-10-01-2024-eb175dff6e46906caea8b9e43dfbd3da">Iran’s blistering ballistic missile attack</a>&nbsp;on Oct. 1.Israel carried out a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-attack-israel-strikes-mideast-war-tehran-35a2b1474e5feedbb200c3aaa557fe60">retaliatory attack on multiple sites in Iran</a>&nbsp;in late October.The documents were sharable within the “Five Eyes,” which are the United States, Britain, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.The New York Times was first to report his arrest.

US government worker charged in docs leak about Israel’s plans to strike Iran

DOUGLAS COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a shooting in Lawrence that sent a man to the hospital and continue to search for a teen suspect.

Just before 8p.m. Monday, police&nbsp;were called to 3323 Iowa Street around&nbsp; where they located a 26-year-old victim with multiple gunshot wounds to the leg, according to police spokesperson Laura McCabe. Lawrence Douglas County Fire Medical transported the man an area trauma center.

Initial reports indicate a drug deal was taking place and allegedly turned into a robbery. Investigators worked through the night to identify witnesses and leads, which led them a nearby residence where the suspects were believed to have run to following the shooting. Investigators applied for and received a search warrant to enter the residence.

The Lawrence Police tactical team was activated, surrounded the residence, and were able to convince one of the suspects to come out shortly after 3:00 a.m. Cameron Cooper, of Lawrence, the suspected shooter, was safely taken into custody. Cooper was taken to the Douglas County Correctional Facility where he is jailed on requested charges of aggravated battery, aggravated assault, and aggravated robbery.

A 17-year-old suspect was not located at the residence and has not been found. Police believe he may have left the area, but investigators continue to follow up on leads.

Police continue search for teen in Kansas drug deal shooting

KANSAS CITY—Authorities are working to determine the cause of a fire in an apartment building in Kansas City.

Just before 6a.m., crews,&nbsp;responded to a reported apartment fire in the 1000 block of E. 9th Street, according to Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins.

First responders found smoke and fire showing from the second floor of a two-story apartment building. The initial calls for trapped occupants were unfounded, according to Hopkins.

 Searches, both primary and secondary came back all clear.&nbsp; No injuries were reported. Fire officials orders a warming bus from ATA has been ordered for a warming location and the Red Cross will assist approximately 16 residents.

16 displaced after fire at Kansas City apartment building

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. forces conducted strikes in Syria against Iranian-aligned militia groups for a second day in a row Tuesday in response to further attacks on U.S. personnel, U.S. Central Command said late Tuesday.

In the latest retaliatory strikes, U.S. forces hit a weapons storage and logistics facility after militia groups launched a rocket attack on U.S. personnel at Patrol Base Shaddadi in eastern Syria.

Earlier Tuesday, Pentagon press secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said that over the weekend the militias had also targeted U.S. personnel with a drone attack and indirect fire at another base, Green Village, where U.S. troops are operating — which prompted the U.S. to strike nine militia targets on Monday in self-defense.

There are about 900 U.S. troops deployed in Syria. No U.S. troops were wounded in either attack.

NEOSHO COUNTY—One person died in an accident just after 1:30p.m. Tuesday in Neosho County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Victory motorcycle driven by&nbsp; Brandon M.&nbsp;Eastwood, 42, Pittsburg, Kansas, was southbound on U.S. 59 three and one half miles South of Kansas 47 and was passing another southbound vehicle. 

The driver lost control of the the motorcycle as it re-entered the southbound lane. The driver was ejected from the motorcycle.&nbsp; The vehicle came to rest within southbound shoulder of the highway and the driver in the ditch. Eastwood was promounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Frontier Medical. He was not wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

TOPEKA — A Topeka man who blocked officers on Jan. 6, 2021, during an attack on the U.S. Capitol building asked a federal court to delay his trial after Donald Trump won the presidency.

In a motion filed Friday in the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., Will Pope asked the judge to delay his trial scheduled for Dec. 2 for three months. Trump promised while on the campaign trail to pardon those criminally charged in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, and Pope is one of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2024/11/06/2024-election-results-live-coverage-updates-analysis/trumps-jan-6-pardon-pledge-00187864" target="_blank">several</a>&nbsp;defendants seeking changes to their cases in the wake of Trump’s victory.

“Ultimately, my jury was the entire American public, and they voted for a mandate to set me free,” Pope wrote in his motion.

He also expressed concern that a fair jury trial may not be possible. More than 90% of voters in Washington, D.C., voted for Vice President Kamala Harris in the recent presidential election. Those voters “may find it especially difficult to look past those results to serve as fair jurors in my case,” Pope wrote.

He continued: “However, if there should be a jury trial in my case, it should happen after emotions have had time to cool.”

They faced eight criminal charges, including civil disorder, obstruction of an official proceeding and disorderly conduct in a capitol building.According to an FBI agent’s investigation into the Pope brothers, which used information&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2021/01/11/kansas-man-who-ran-for-topeka-city-council-appears-in-video-of-fatal-shooting-at-u-s-capitol/">first reported by Kansas Reflector</a>, a U.S. Capitol Police officer said Pope&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2021/03/02/topeka-man-blocked-officers-tried-to-break-into-pelosis-office-during-attack-on-u-s-capitol/">blocked law enforcement</a>&nbsp;from closing doors as they were trying to prevent others from entering the building despite “repeated verbal orders to leave” and an attempt “to physically grab and push” Pope out.But Pope “resisted by tensing up and refusing to move,” the agent wrote.Pope, who ran for Topeka City Council in 2019, said he entered the Capitol “to express their concern about the direction of the nation,” wrote the FBI agent, whose name was redacted.“Specifically, William Pope explained that questionable things happened during the election and that citizens deserved a full election audit,” the FBI agent wrote.Pope and his brother were identified in social media posts and videos, and surveillance footage from inside the Capitol building. FBI agents and Topeka Police Department officers arrested Pope on Feb. 12, 2021, at his house in Topeka, according to court documents.Since then, the case has dragged on.In June, prosecutors admitted to a “drafting error” that stated Pope had assaulted an officer. He is not charged with any crimes associated with assaulting an officer. In response to the error, Pope accused prosecutors of misconduct and requested sanctions. He subsequently withdrew that request in a June 26 filing.“I ask that the government in turn begin bestowing mercy on the hundreds of January 6 defendants whose lives are being crushed,” he wrote.
