The Negro Leagues are getting the kind of recognition they deserve today. All Major League clubs will celebrate the centennial of the founding of the Negro National League -- the first structured Negro League that lasted for an extended period -- with all players, managers, coaches and umpires wearing a Negro Leagues 100th anniversary logo patch on their uniforms during today's games. The logo, a derivative of the official logo created by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, also will be featured on base jewels and lineup cards.

The festivities, originally slated for June 27 but postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, will cap what has become a summer-long celebration of the league and its players, 100 years after the league’s founding. Bob Kendrick, who is the president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, believes the big celebration would not have happened without Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association, who made a joint donation of $1 million to the museum in February.

After a sluggish showing offensively in a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mlb.com/gameday/631280/final/box" target="_blank">Game 1 loss</a>&nbsp;to the Twins on Saturday afternoon, the Royals needed someone to step up in Game 2 with a big hit.

Who else but&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mlb.com/player/593160" target="_blank">Whit Merrifield</a>, the MLB hits leader the past two seasons?

With the score tied at 1 in the fourth inning, Merrifield -- who already had two hits and an RBI -- blasted a three-run home run. That was the key blow in the Royals’ 4-2 victory at Target Field in the second of two seven-inning games.

It was Royals manager Mike Matheny’s 600th career win.

“That’s cool. Um, yeah. That’s good,” Matheny said, seemingly forcing a smile.

Merrifield jumped on a first-pitch changeup from right-hander José Berríos and launched it over the left-field fence, his fifth homer this season.

“This is the second time we’ve seen Berríos [this season],” Merrifield said. “I’m familiar with him, seen all his pitches. Saw a changeup out of his hand and I thought it was a good pitch to hit.

“He hadn’t thrown me a changeup today but he did last week, and I knew it was in his arsenal.”

Matheny continues to marvel at Merrifield’s approach at the plate.

“Big spot there,” Matheny said of Merrifield’s homer. “He just takes such a nice short swing and [doesn’t] try to do too much. I think that’s a lesson for all our guys. Some guys think home run and then they actually slow their swing down by trying too hard to do that. But he takes a nice short path to the ball. In a park like this, if he gets the head out, he can do damage.”

Meanwhile, Royals starter&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mlb.com/player/518633" target="_blank">Danny Duffy</a>&nbsp;tossed five solid innings, giving up two hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out eight. Going five innings gave the bullpen a break after Game 1, when&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mlb.com/royals/news/ian-kennedy-looks-sharp-as-royals-opener" target="_blank">opener Ian Kennedy went two</a>&nbsp;but Jakob Junis, who was going to piggyback Kennedy for multiple innings, was shut down because of back spasms. That forced Matheny to use four relievers.

“We needed that from Duff right there,” Matheny said. “We needed him to get through five. He really showed us something there to get through that last inning.”

Duffy got nicked for a run in the first when Mitch Garver reached on an error, went to second on a single, then to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Marwin Gonzalez.

Duffy also gave up a sole home run to Nelson Cruz in the fourth, but the lefty retired 15 of the final 17 batters he faced.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Whit Merrifield had three hits, including a three-run homer, to back Danny Duffy's strong start as the Kansas City Royals came back to beat the Minnesota Twins 4-2 and split Saturday's doubleheader. Duffy (1-2) allowed two runs - one earned - on just two hits in five innings. José Berríos (1-3) surrendered four runs in four innings for Minnesota. Nelson Cruz homered in both games of and now has 407 career home runs, tying Duke Snider for 56th on the all-time list. The Twins won Saturday's first game 4-2.

Playing for the first time since July 29, St. Louis used solid performances by Dexter Fowler and Adam Wainwright to post a 5-1 victory in Game 1. Then it battered Chicago's bullpen in the second seven-inning game — part of shortened doubleheaders in the pandemic-delayed season. The reigning NL Central champions improved to 4-3 with the sweep. Every other team in the majors had played at least 13 games coming into the day.

CHICAGO (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals are back. They have returned to the field for the first time in 17 days after their season was derailed by a coronavirus outbreak. The reigning NL Central champions played a doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox, kicking off an extended stay in the Windy City and a busy finish to the pandemic-shortened season. Manager Mike Shildt says it's easy to complain and he recognizes the challenges, "But we accept them and we move forward."

UNDATED (AP) — Goaltending was the story during the first two games of Saturday's Stanley Cup Playoff schedule. The Boston Bruins managed to win after their top netminder opted out of the remainder of the playoffs, while the Arizona Coyotes received an outstanding performance from their goalie.

The Bruins lead their first-round series two games to one after Jaroslav Halak (YAR'-oh-slav hah-LAHK') stopped 29 shots in a 3-1 victory over the Hurricanes. Halak got the win hours after the team announced that Tuukka (TOO'-kah) Rask left to be with his wife and three children.

Charlie Coyle opened the scoring with a power-play goal in the second period and added an assist. Sean Kuraly (kuh-RAH'-leez) made it 2-0 with a short-handed goal early in the third.

Darcy Kuemper was sensational as the Coyotes earned a 4-2 win over the Avalanche to pull within two games to one in their first-round series. Darcy Kuemper made 20 of his 49 saves in the first period and stopped several tough attempts in the final 20 minutes to allow Arizona to stay ahead. 

Brad Richardson broke a 1-1 tie with 34 seconds left in the second period. It remained 2-1 until Taylor Hall scored the first of the Coyotes' two empty-netters.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — The Portland Trail Blazers have advanced to the NBA playoffs by winning their play-in series against the Memphis Grizzlies.

CJ McCollum scored 14 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter, including a pair of big jumpers to lead the Blazers past the Grizzlies, 126-122. Damian Lillard dropped in 31 points for the Trail Blazers, who won their last four games in down-to-the-wire finishes.

UNDATED (AP) — The New Orleans Pelicans have fired coach Alvin Gentry after the club missed the playoffs for the fourth time in his five seasons. 

The Pelicans went 30-42 this season. They finished with just two victories in their final eight games despite the presence of top overall draft choice Zion Williamson and first-time All-Star Brandon Ingram.

New Orleans' lone playoff appearance under Gentry came in the 2017-18 season.

UNDATED (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals finally got a chance to play meaningful baseball for the first time since July 29, sweeping a doubleheader from the White Sox.

The Cardinals were in midseason form from the start as Dexter Fowler supplied a two-run single while St. Louis scored four times in the first inning to beat the White Sox, 5-1 in the opener of a doubleheader in Chicago.

Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright pitched five innings of one-run ball in his second start of the year. Giovanny Gallegos then struck out the side in the sixth before John Gant finished the seven-inning game.

Paul Goldschmidt and Tyler O'Neill homered in the nightcap to power the Redbirds past the Pale Hose, 6-3. The Cards trailed 3-1 in the fifth until Goldschmidt hit an RBI single off Evan Marshall and O'Neill belted a tiebreaking drive to left later in the inning.

St. Louis had been sidelined for 2 1/2 weeks after several players tested positive for the coronavirus, including All-Star catcher Yadier Molina (YAH'-dee-ehr moh-LEE'-nuh) and infielder Paul DeJong (deh-YUHNG').

— Max Muncy's third RBI of the night was a sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th to send the Dodgers past the Angels, 6-5. Mookie Betts homered again and had three RBIs for the Dodgers, while Mike Trout slammed his ninth home run of the season for the Angels.

— Saturday's game between the Reds and visiting Pirates was postponed after a Cincinnati player tested positive for COVID-19. The Reds are the third team to have a game postponed because someone on their roster tested positive, joining the Marlins and Cardinals. — The White Sox have put reliever Ian Hamilton on the 10-day injured list because of a sore right shoulder. The team also transferred utilityman Leury (lay-UR'-ee) García to the 45-day injured list with a sprained thumb. 

Kim shoots 62 for 2-shot lead after three rounds at Wyndham

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Si Woo Kim had a hole in one on the way to a 62 and a two-shot lead over Doc Redman and Rob Oppenheim through three rounds of the PGA's Wyndham Championship.

Kim is at 18-under after 54 holes. He made history three years ago when at 21 he became the youngest winner of The Players Championship. Now, he's seeking his first victory since — and playing strongly wherever he tees it up. 

Redman had a 63, while Oppenheim set a career low on tour with a 62 in second at 16-under. 

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS-SENIOR PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Jerry Kelly remains the leader at the Senior Players Championship despite bogeys on two of his last four holes on Saturday.

Kelly had to settle for an even-par 70 after being the only player at par or better after two days in the PGA Tour Champions' first major of the season. He's one stroke ahead of Woody Austin, Scott Parel and Colin Montgomerie.

Austin and Parel each shot 67, while Montgomerie had a 68.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Kenny Clark has signed a four-year contract extension.

Clark's agent confirmed a ESPN report that the 2016 first-round draft pick from UCLA agreed to terms on a deal worth $70 million, with a $25 million signing bonus. 

Clark has emerged as the Packers' top defensive lineman. 

— Atlanta police say former four-time Cleveland Browns Pro Bowl linebacker Chip Banks is in serious condition following a shooting. Atlanta police spokeswoman Marla Rooker said the 60-year-old was in serious condition. 

Parents join players urging Big Ten to play; 9 Sooners positive for virus

UNDATED (AP) — A group of Ohio State football players' parents joined parents of players at Iowa in calling for the Big Ten to overturn its decision not to play this fall. Meanwhile, Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said nine Sooners tested positive for COVID-19 after he gave his players a week break from team activities. 

The Football Parents at Ohio State posted a letter to Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren, calling for the reinstatement of the 10-game schedule the conference unveiled six days before it postponed football until spring. 

NEW YORK (AP) — Belinda Bencic (BEN'-chich) is the latest top tennis player to pull out of the U.S. Open. Her withdrawal means three of the four female semifinalists in 2019 will not be at the Grand Slam tournament this year. 

Bencic currently is ranked No. 8. Five of the WTA's top eight players have announced they won't play at Flushing Meadows amid the coronavirus pandemic. 

Austin Dillon out after positive COVID-19 test

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — NASCAR driver Austin Dillon has tested positive for COVID-19 and will not compete in Sunday's Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway's road course. 

Richard Childress Racing says Dillon tested positive Saturday morning and is now self-quarantining away from the team. Kaz Grala will drive the No. 3 Chevrolet at Daytona.

Dillon is the third Cup Series drive to test positive for the coronavirus, joining seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson and part-timer Brendan Gaughan. 

MONTMELO, Spain (AP) — Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has secured a record-extending 92nd pole position at the Spanish Grand Prix. He nudged Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas into second place by just .059 seconds. Red Bull's Max Verstappen qualified in third. 

Hamilton is looking to claim an 88th F1 victory that would move him within three of Michael Schumacher's record. 

Marco Andretti leads Honda onslaught in Indy 500 qualifying

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Marco Andretti led a top speed sweep for Andretti Autosport in qualifying for the Indianapolis 500 as the Honda-powered team claimed the first four spots on the leaderboard and eight of the top nine. 

Andretti posted a four-lap average of 231.351 mph.

CHEYENNE, Wy. -Cheyenne Central volleyball player Shelby Murrell has signed in with Hutchinson Community College in Kansas for volleyball. The 6-0 middle and outside hitter showed some versatility on the court which helped Central qualify for the 4A state tournament as a #4 seed.

Murrell earned all-state status in 2019&nbsp; and will join a Hutchinson program that plays in a very competitive juco league.&nbsp;

Bruins goalie Tuuka Rask opts out of NHL playoffs

UNDATED (AP) — Boston Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask has opted out of the team's playoff run. The Vezina (VEH'-zih-nuh) Trophy finalist said in a statement Saturday morning before Game 3 of Boston's playoff series against Carolina that "at this moment there are things more important than hockey in my life, and that is being with my family."

Rask led the NHL with a 2.12 goals-against average and was second in save percentage and shutouts. 

Boston and Carolina are tied 1-1 in the best-of-seven series. After a 3-2 loss on Thursday night, Rask said he complained that the NHL's fan-free playoffs lacked the usual intensity.

Wyandotte County announced Thursday that it is barring non-professional athletes from competing this fall in football, volleyball and soccer because of virus concerns. The order also bars marching band events. The district in Kansas City, Kansas, called off its fall sports season earlier this week. The new order applies to public schools, private schools, higher education and non-professional sports clubs and organizations in the county. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment says nine coronavirus clusters have been tied to sports, with 64 cases as of last week.

UNDATED (AP) — Major college football will be the only championship decided by the NCAA, and the prospect of holding that still hangs in the balance.

The NCAA has called off all fall championship events except for major college football because of the limited number of schools competing in sports such as men's and women's soccer and women's volleyball during the first semester.

NCAA President Mark Emmert made the announcement in a video posted on Twitter, although it has been clear this was coming as conferences canceled fall sports seasons because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Emmert said the NCAA would prioritize staging championships in winter and spring sports because those — including the NCAA basketball tournaments— were canceled when COVID-19 first spiked across the United States in March.

The decision comes after The Big Sky, West Coast and Southern conferences announced Thursday that they are the latest Division I leagues to postpone its fall sports schedule. 

New Mexico State has postponed its football season because of COVID-19 concerns and state restrictions. The Aggies are the third independent FBS program to decide not to play in the fall, joining Connecticut and Massachusetts. 

New Mexico State says it will explore playing football in the spring.

Moving fall sports to the spring still must go through the Division I Council, which is comprised of representatives of all 32 conferences. It also would need approval by the DI Board of Directors.

UNDATED (AP) — It took the Columbus Jackets a while to get going following their five-overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Fortunately for the Jackets, netminder Joonas Korpisalo (YOH'-nuhs kohr-pih-SAH'-loh) was just as sharp as he performed while making a playoff-record 85 saves two days earlier.

— Dougie Hamilton broke a 2-2 stalemate midway through the third period to give the Hurricanes a 3-2 win over the Bruins, evening the series at a game apiece. Carolina trailed, 1-0 until Teuvo Teravainen and Andrei Svechnikov scored 1:28 late in the second, but Boston tied it on Brad Marchand's goal with five seconds left in the period. James Reimer stopped 33 shots for the Canes.

— The Stars squandered a 4-2 lead in the third period before Jamie Oleksiak (oh-LEHK'-see-ak) scored with just 40 seconds remaining to give Dallas a 5-4 win over the Flames. Miro Heiskanen had two goals and Alexander Radulov (RAD'-yoo-lahv) also tallied to help the Stars even the series at a game apiece. The game appeared headed to OT when Calgary's Sam Bennett beat Ben Bishop on a power-play with 2:49 left in the third period.

— The Golden Knights squandered leads of 2-0 and 3-2 before Reilly Smith scored 7:13 into overtime to give them a 4-3 win over the Blackhawks. The Knights wasted leads of 2-0 and 3-2 in the second period before taking a 2-0 lead in the series. Paul Stastny (STAS'-nee), Tomas Nosek (tah-MAHS' NOH'-shehk) and Mark Stone also tallied for Vegas.

Canadiens coach hospitalized with chest pains

TORONTO (AP) — Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin (BERZH'-eh-vin) says coach Claude Julien was taken by ambulance to a Toronto hospital after experiencing chest pains Wednesday night. The 60-year-old Julien remained in the hospital Thursday afternoon while more tests were being conducted to determine the cause of his condition.

Bergevin said the situation is not COVID-19 related. 

The 60-year-old coach is not expected to be back behind the bench for the rest of the team's first-round series against Philadelphia. Associate coach Kirk Muller will take over Julien's role in an interim basis. 

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — It will be the Portland Trail Blazers against the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA's Western Conference play-in series. The Trail Blazers advanced with a win over the Nets after the Grizzlies secured a spot by downing the league-leading Milwaukee Bucks.

Damian Lillard dropped in 42 more points and had a crucial steal as the Blazers earned a do-or-die victory, 134-133 over the Nets. CJ McCollum had 25 points for Portland, which erased a 10-point, third-quarter deficit and pulled out a win when Caris LeVert missed a jumper just before the final buzzer.

LeVert had 37 points for Brooklyn, which already had secured the seventh seed in the East.

Memphis kept its season alive with a 119-106 victory over the Bucks. Jonas Valanciunas (YOH'-nuhs val-ehn-CHOO'-nuhs) and Ja (jah) Morant each had triple-doubles, while Dillon Brooks added 31 points in the Grizzlies' second wire-to-wire win of the season.

Valanciunas had 26 points, 19 rebounds and 12 assists for his first triple-double in 559 NBA games. Morant had 12 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists.

The Blazers can advance to the first round against the Lakers by beating the Grizzlies on Saturday. If Memphis prevails, there will be a winner-take-all game on Sunday.

— The Wizards picked up their lone win in the restart as Thomas Bryant had 26 points and nine rebounds lead a 96-90 decision over the Celtics. Troy Brown Jr. added 17 points and eight rebounds against Boston, which rested its starters after clinching the third seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. 

UNDATED (AP) — Mookie Betts and the Dodgers certainly know how to exact a bit of revenge.

Betts was 4-for-4 with three home runs and four RBIs as the Dodgers blasted the Padres, 11-2. Betts' assault began after he was hit by a pitch leading off the bottom of the first. Corey Seager homered just three pitches later before AJ Pollock went deep.

Betts joins Johnny Mize and Sammy Sosa as the only players in major league history to homer three times in six different games.

— The Orioles completed a three-game sweep as Pedro Severino and Rio Ruiz homered in an 11-4 blasting of the Phillies. Thomas Eshelman allowed two runs and four hits in five innings to earn his second career win.
