MONTREAL (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs lineman Laurent Duvernay-Tardif will spend the next few months studying at one of the world's most prestigious universities instead of playing football. The Canadian addressed the media Wednesday, speaking about his decision to opt out of the 2020 NFL season after spending the past few months as an orderly at a long-term care facility an hour away from Montreal during the COVID-19 pandemic. Duvernay-Tardif will take online classes at Harvard University's T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The 29-year-old McGill University medical school graduate first revealed he would try to take classes in nutrition, biostatistics and epidemiology in an article with Sports Illustrated released Wednesday.

UNDATED (AP) — Famed North Carolina basketball coach Roy Williams has paid tribute to Gene Budig, the former American League president who also headed three major universities. Budig died Tuesday at 81. Budig was the chancellor at the University of Kansas in 1988 and strongly backed the decision to hire Williams as its next head basketball coach after Larry Brown left for the NBA. Williams had been a longtime assistant coach at North Carolina. Some Kansas backers wanted the school to hire a high-profile coach. The Hall of Fame coach says Budig "was the guy that gave Roy Williams a chance."

(AP) — The idea a year ago that the San Francisco 49ers would win the NFC West following a three-year stretch of winning just 12 games combined seemed far-fetched. &nbsp;Maybe it shouldn't have considering how often teams go from also-rans to division champs in the span of a year in the modern NFL. Last year marked the 16th time in the past 17 seasons that two teams won the division a year after missing the playoffs entirely, with Green Bay also doing it.

LAKE BUENA VISTA (AP) — It took double-overtime for the Toronto Raptors to force a Game 7 in the NBA's Eastern Conference semifinals against the Boston Celtics.

Kyle Lowry contributed 33 points, eight rebounds and six assists in 53 minutes as the Raptors outlasted the Celtics, 125-122. He got an acrobatic jumper to fall with 11.7 seconds left. 

Lowry bounced back after scoring just 10 points on 3-of-8 shooting in Toronto's Game 5 loss.

Norman Powell finished with 23 points off the bench for the defending champs, Fred VanVleet had 21 and OG Anunoby chipped in 13 with 13 rebounds. Anunoby put Toronto ahead by nailing a 3-pointer with under a minute left.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — The NBA's board of governors and general managers will discuss a plan later this week to push the NBA draft back to Nov. 18. That's according to a memo sent to teams, a missive that says the date is based on "initial conversations with the Players Association. 

The draft has been moved back once from June 25 to October 16. The memo says the additional delay would also allow the league more time to conduct the pre-draft process, including a combine in some form.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — The Tampa Bay Lightning have followed a blowout win with a nail-biter to take a two-games-to-none lead over the New York Islanders in the NHL's Eastern Conference final.

Nikita Kucherov (KOO'-cheh-rahv) scored with 8.8 seconds left to lift the Bolts past the Isles, 2-1. The Lightning had two quality chances that were stopped by Semyon Varlamov (SEHM'-yahn vahr-LAH'-mahv) seconds before Kucherov fired the puck into the net.

Matt Martin put the Isles ahead just 1:24 into the game. Martin has five playoff goals after scoring just five the entire regular season.

Victor Hedman tied it late in the first period for the Lightning, who were outshot 28-21.

Andrei Vasilevskiy (va-sih-LEHV'-skee) was superb at times and helped Tampa Bay kill off a five-minute major and a 5-on-3 situation.

UNDATED (AP) — Bruce Cassidy is the winner of the Jack Adams Award as NHL coach of the year after leading the Bruins to the Presidents' Trophy.

Cassidy edged out Philadelphia's Alain Vigneault (VEEN'-yoh) for his first Jack Adams honor. Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella finished third in the voting, which is done by broadcasters.

Williams wins in 3 sets; Azarenka cruises

NEW YORK (AP) — Serena Williams remains in line to tie Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles. Her next opponent will be someone she beat in the 2012 and 2013 finals.

Williams fired 20 aces but had to rally to beat Tsvetana Pironkova (sveh-TAH'-nuh pih-RAHN'-koh-vah) 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 and get to the U.S. Open semifinals. 

Williams trailed by a set and a break in the all-mom quarterfinal match before winning five straight games to take control.

The 38-year-old Williams will have about 24 hours to recover from a match that lasted over two hours. She next faces unseeded Victoria Azarenka, who breezed through her quarterfinal match.

Azarenka continued her recent resurgence with a 6-1, 6-0 rout of Elise Mertens. Azarenka used a big serve to beat Mertens to earn a meeting with Williams, who is 18-4 against her in their careers.

Ararenka won the Open-tuneup Western &amp; Southern Open for her 21st career title. She made her first U.S. Open semifinal since 2013 and eighth grand slam semifinal overall. 

Naomi Osaka will face Jennifer Brady in Thursday's other semifinal.

UNDATED (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers scored 19 runs for the first time in a decade on Wednesday, and it wasn't close to being the day's biggest offensive assault. 

Milwaukee's former major league team outscored the current one as the Braves obliterated their franchise scoring record in a 29-9 dismantling of the Marlins. Adam Duvall led Atlanta's 23-hit assault with three homers and nine RBIs, including a grand slam.

Nationals put Kendrick on 10-day IL with strained hamstring

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Nationals have placed Howie Kendrick on the 10-day injured list because of a strained left hamstring. 

Kendrick is batting .275 with two homers and 14 RBIs in 25 games this season. Last year, he was the MVP of the NL Championship Series and hit the go-ahead homer in Game 7 of the World Series.

UNDATED (AP) — Jalen Ramsey is becoming the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history after agreeing to a five-year, $105 million contract extension with the Los Angeles Rams. 

The extension includes $71.2 million, the most guaranteed money ever given to a defensive back. Ramsey will average $21 million per season, another record for a cornerback or safety. 

Los Angeles acquired Ramsey in a trade with Jacksonville midway through last season.

— Five-time Pro Bowler Aqib Talib announced his retirement from the NFL on his new podcast Wednesday. Talib said he was excited about reuniting with Bill Belichick and the Patriots, But after he began looking at flights and apartments, Talib took a look at the Patriots' schedule and asked himself if he really wanted to cover the likes of George Kittle, Travis Kelce, Darren Waller and Noah Fant, among others.

— 49ers linebacker Fred Warner took part in Wednesday practice after being taken off the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday. Brooks Koepka out of US Open with lingering injury

MAMARONECK, N.Y. (AP) — Brooks Koepka (KEHP'-kuh) has pulled out of next week's U.S. Open because of lingering pain in his left knee. 

The two-time champion had played eight times in a 10-week span, including six in a row. He was trying to catch up from missing so much time from a knee injury suffered last October. It reached a point where he withdrew before the start of the FedEx Cup playoffs, ending his season in the hopes that time off would help. 

Koepka won the U.S. Open in 2017 and 2018, and he was runner-up last year at Pebble Beach. 

Former WWE wrestlers' lawsuit over brain damage is dismissed

NEW YORK (AP) — A federal appeals court has dismissed a lawsuit filed by 50 former pro wrestlers who claimed World Wrestling Entertainment failed to protect them from repeated head injuries that led to long-term brain damage. 

The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals in New York City upheld a lower court ruling in 2018 that said the lawsuit's claims were frivolous or filed too late.

Among the plaintiffs were Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka and Harry Masayoshi Fujiwara, known as Mr. Fuji. Their lawyer says they were posthumously diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

The Hutchinson Community College women's cross country team turned a third-place showing in the season-opening Terry Masterston Twilight Classic into a Top 5 national ranking on Wednesday.

The Blue Dragon women are ranked in the Top 5 of the national rankings for the first time since 2003 as Hutchinson sits in fifth in the first United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NJCAA Division I rankings of the 2020 season.

Not many teams around the country competed last weekend and there are several schools not running cross country this season because of the Coronavirus pandemic. Cross Country stayed in its traditional season slot while the rest of the fall sports' seasons were moved to spring by the NJCAA because of the pandemic.

Hutchinson is one of four Jayhawk Conference teams ranked in the Top 10. Masterson Twilight Classic women's team champion Cloud County is third. Hutchinson is fifth, Dodge city is sixth and Barton is ninth.

Iowa Central is the No. 1 team in the first women's national rankings of the season. New Mexico Junior College is second.

Led by freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2020-21/bios/cocking_louise_h2uv">Louise Cocking</a>, the Blue Dragons finished third in the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic. The Hutchinson Community College men's cross country team attained its highest national ranking in program history on Wednesday when the first United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NJCAA Division I rankings were released on Wednesday.

The Blue Dragons are ranked No. 3 in the Division I rankings. Hutchinson's previous high team rank was No. 4 in 2018.

Hutchinson finished third in the season-opening Terry Masterson Classic on Friday at Fun Valley.

The Blue Dragons were paced by all-region runner&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mxc/2020-21/bios/flanagan_teagan_iz8r">Teagan Flanagan</a>, who finished as individual runner-up on Friday night at the Masterson. The Blue Dragons had three other runners finish in the Top 20 on Friday. Sophomore Jacob Mcelhanon was sixth overall, followed by sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mxc/2020-21/bios/schrag_matthew_erzg">Matthew Schrag</a>&nbsp;(13th) and freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mxc/2020-21/bios/delaney_cameron_5m5a">Cameron Delaney</a>&nbsp;(19th).

Irving, Texas –&nbsp;In advance of the 2020 football season, the Big 12 Conference released its public service announcement (PSA),&nbsp;<a href="https://big12.us/3bSzKCt">You See Us Differently (Click to View).</a>&nbsp;&nbsp;In an ongoing effort to confront racism and social injustice, Big 12 student-athletes lent their voices to a series of 30- and 60-second ads.

“Systemic racism is a very real issue in our country, and unfortunately it continues to affect the everyday lives of many Americans,” said TCU Chancellor and Big 12 Conference Board of Directors Chairman Victor Boschini. “The Big 12 Conference is utilizing its platforms to keep this issue top-of-mind so we can collectively help put an end to racism.”

You See Us Differently&nbsp;illustrates how millions of fans come together to cheer for and support the student-athletes of their favorite teams when on the field, and yet some fans still don't see those same student-athletes as equal off the field.&nbsp;

“It takes all Americans to combat racism, and work toward true equity and social justice,” said Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby. “We recognize that using the voices of those affected to articulate a strong message may make some people uncomfortable.&nbsp; The Conference supports our student-athletes and we join them in this effort.&nbsp; If we are to eradicate racism, difficult conversations will play a part.&nbsp; We embrace the opportunity to use our platforms to facilitate the needed dialogue.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Since May, the Big 12 and its member institutions have worked to create, administer and execute a multi-faceted diversity and inclusion plan.&nbsp; Beyond the PSA campaign, other activities include:

●&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Uniforms: Option for teams to include a Conference approved and uniformed social justice/unity game-jersey patch or helmet sticker, and slogans on warm-up shirts.&nbsp; Additionally, a Big 12-branded unity helmet sticker will also be featured.

●&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Unity Messages: Each campus will incorporate a Unity Message into its pre-game run of show. Messages can include PA announcements, and student-athlete videos, which will run prior to the start of competition.&nbsp;

Over 40 football student-athletes are featured in the&nbsp;You See Us Differently&nbsp;spots.&nbsp; Separate ads will be produced in the voices of women’s basketball, men’s basketball and Olympic sport Big 12 athletes.&nbsp;The Conference will use the majority of its PSA inventory to air these ads during the athletic year and will also create football sport specific ads for each member institution.&nbsp;These ads will run during broadcast of Big 12 Conference controlled inventory on ESPN/ABC and FOX platforms, and Big 12 Now on ESPN+.

With the coronavirus pandemic wiping out the offseason and eliminating all four preseason games, the Chiefs and Texans found themselves going through a final workout Tuesday with plenty of things to iron out — from the basics such as pregame stretch and warm-ups to the last-minute tweaks to formations, play calls and the game plan. After all, the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs and the Texans, whom they beat in the divisional round of the playoffs, know that all eyes will be on them as they kick off the season with a Thursday night showdown at Arrowhead Stadium.

NEW YORK (AP) — The former American League President Gene Budig has died. His death was announced Tuesday by the commissioner's office and the Charleston RiverDogs, a minor league team he co-owned. No cause was given. He had been in hospice in South Carolina. Budig brought an academic pedigree to the job of AL president, and he was the last one to hold the post. He was on the job from 1994 until 2000 when owners abolished league presidents. Budig was the head of three universities — Kansas, West Virginia and Illinois State. He also was a newspaper reporter, governor's assistant, major general in the Nebraska Air National Guard and a teacher at Princeton. Gene Budig was 81 years old.

Heat wipe out top-seeded Bucks; Lakers win

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — The top seed is out after just two rounds and 10 games of the NBA playoffs.

The Heat are in the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in six years following a 103-94 win over the Bucks.

Playing without Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH'-nihs an-teh-toh-KOON'-poh) because of a sprained ankle, the Bucks raced out to a 28-15 lead but couldn't sustain the momentum. Miami answered with a 30-9 spurt that put the Heat ahead, 45-37.

Jimmy Butler and Goran Dragic (DRAH'-gihch) each scored 17 points for the Heat, who overcame 22 turnovers and clinched their seventh trip to the conference finals since 2005.

The Bucks are just the sixth No. 1 seed to fail to advance to the conference finals since the playoffs expanded to 16 teams in 1984.

Khris Middleton scored a game-high 23 points for the Bucks.

Next up for Miami is the winner of the East semifinal series between the Celtics and Raptors, which Boston leads, three games to two.

The Los Angeles Lakers enjoy a 2-1 lead in the Western Conference finals after beating the Houston Rockets for the second straight game.

LeBron James scored 36 points and Rajon Rondo (RAH'-zhahn RAHN'-doh) sparked a fourth-quarter rally in the Lakers' 112-102 win over the Rockets. 

Rondo scored eight straight points during a 10-0 run early in the fourth quarter that put the Lakers ahead for good. He finished with 21 points and nine assists to help James set an NBA record with his 162nd career playoff win, surpassing Derek Fisher.

Anthony Davis had 26 points and Kyle Kuzma added 14. James Harden scored 33 points and Russell Westbrook had 30 for the Rockets.

Billy Donovan out as Thunder coach after 5 seasons

UNDATED (AP) — Billy Donovan won't return after five seasons as coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Donovan took the Thunder to the playoffs every year. He was a finalist for Coach of the Year this season after his squad outperformed expectations and pushed the Rockets to seven games in the first round of the playoffs.

Donovan went 243-157 with Oklahoma City. 

Donovan was at the end of his contract. He and the team described his departure as a mutual decision.

— Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH'-nihs an-teh-toh-KOON'-poh) was the Defensive Player of the Year, so it should be no surprise that he was also the leading vote-getter for the league's All-Defensive team. The Bucks forward appeared on 97 of the first-team ballots out of 100 cast by a global panel of sports writers and broadcasters who cover the league. Also on the first team: Lakers forward Anthony Davis, 76ers guard Ben Simmons, Jazz center Rudy Gobert and Celtics guard Marcus Smart. 

— The Clippers have received final approval from Inglewood's city government to begin construction on their new arena next summer. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer is building a privately financed 18,000-seat arena along with a practice facility and corporate offices for his NBA franchise. Ballmer intends to open his new arena in 2024, immediately following the expiration of his team's lease at Staples Center.

— NBA coaches or other team staffers could have guests in the bubble later this month. Team staffs would be limited to a total of 10 guests, all of whom would have to begin a self-quarantining period at home immediately. The would then travel to Central Florida next week to begin another week of even stricter lockdown. 

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — The Vegas Golden Knights turned the tables on the Dallas Stars to even the NHL's Western Conference final at a game apiece.

Two days after a shutout loss in the opener, the Knights allowed just 24 shots and blanked the Stars, 3-0.

Robin Lehner posted his second consecutive shutout and fourth of the postseason.

All the scoring came in a 10-minute span of the second period, beginning with Paul Stastny's (STAS'-neez) goal at the 4:53 mark. Stastny also set up William Karlsson's power-play goal about 3 ½ minutes later. Tomas Nosek (toh-MAHS NOH'-shehk) capped the scoring for the Knights, who put 32 shots on Anton Khudobin (hoo-DOH'-bihn).

NEW YORK (AP) — Two-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka set up a U.S. Open semifinal against 28th-seeded Jennifer Brady, who's never been this far at a major tournament.

Osaka played far cleaner tennis than her opponent in a 6-3, 6-4 win over 93rd-ranked Shelby Rogers. Rogers finished with 27 unforced errors, Osaka with eight. 

The former No. 1-ranked played won the U.S. Open two years ago.

Earlier, Brady defeated No. 23 seed Yulia Putintseva (poo-TIHN'-seh-vah), 6-3, 6-2.

It's been quite a surge for Brady, whose big serve and forehand have carried her to an 11-1 record since tennis returned from its pandemic hiatus.

Jonathan Davis belted a two-run homer in his first at-bat of the season to spark the Blue Jays' third straight win, 2-1 over New York. Shun Yamaguchi (shoon yah-mah-GOO'-chee) allowed one run in two innings of relief to earn the win. 

The Yankees have dropped five straight and 15 of 20 to fall to 21-21. They sit behind the Blue Jays and first-place Rays in the AL East.

— Juan Soto drove in a run in his return to the lineup and the Nationals used strong relief pitching to beat the Rays 5-3 and sweep the two-game series. Soto missed five games with left elbow soreness. 

— The Orioles homered four times as Ryan Mountcastle belted a two-run blast and Rio Ruiz added a three-run shot in an 11-2 dismantling of the Mets. The Orioles won their fourth straight and improved to 20-21, moving within a half-game of the slumping Yankees for the second wild-card spot. 

— The Twins and Cardinals split a doubleheader in St. Louis. Josh Donaldson, Nelson Cruz and Miguel Sanó all homered to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 7-3 victory in the first game. Switzerland's supreme court says its judges dismissed Semenya's appeal against a Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling last year that upheld the rules drafted by track's governing body affecting female runners with differences of sex development. The Swiss Federal Tribunal said CAS had the right to uphold the rules to guarantee fair competition for certain running disciplines in female athletics.
