St. Louis, second in the NL Central, dropped three games behind the division-leading Chicago Cubs with two weeks left. The fourth-place Reds are 20-26 and also trail Milwaukee. KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Johnny Russell scored in the 80th minute and Sporting Kansas City beat Minnesota United 1-0 on Sunday night to take the Western Conference lead. Minnesota (5-4-2) listed seven players not medically cleared for the match. Sporting Kansas City had six on the list, including Erik Hurtado. An unidentified player for Sporting Kansas City tested positive for COVID-19. The team said Saturday the player self-isolated upon the initial positive result and will remain in isolation until cleared by the club's medical staff. No other players and coaches were confirmed positive for the coronavirus.

UNDATED (AP) — Kansas City's Brady Singer took a no-hitter into the eighth inning Thursday. Then a night later, Casey Mize began a game with five hitless frames for Detroit. That was a step forward for the two pitching prospects who have had their struggles this season. They're not alone. Nate Pearson, Luis Patino, Spencer Howard and Tarik Skubal are other young pitchers who have gone through some growing pains. There are some success stories among the game's current group of pitching prospects. Sixto Sanchez pitched a seven-inning complete game Sunday for Miami. UNDATED (AP) — Big 12 teams posted the top three passing totals of the weekend in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech all went over 400 yards passing. OU's Spencer Rattler hit on 14 of 17 for 290 yards and four touchdowns in just two quarters against FCS Missouri State. OU finished with 484 yards. Texas' Sam Ehlinger was 25 of 33 for 426 yards and five touchdowns against UTEP. Texas ended up 29 of 41 for a school-record 481 yards and seven TDs. Texas Tech's Alan Bowman was 38 of 52 for 430 yards with two TDs and an interception against FCS Houston Baptist.

UNDATED (AP) — The Big Ten presidents were presented a comprehensive plan to conduct a fall football season, but a final decision is still to come. A person with direct knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that the full Council of Presidents and Chancellors heard from all the subcommittees of the conference's Return to Competition Task Force over two and half hours. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Big Ten was not making its return to competition plans public. The person said the meeting broke up without the presidents and chancellors voting and with no set plans for them to reconvene.

Nuggets do it again, taking Clippers to Game 7 in West

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — The Denver Nuggets have done it again, climbing back from a 3-1 deficit for the second consecutive NBA playoffs series.

It was a comeback within a comeback as the Nuggets turned a 19-point, third-quarter deficit into a 13-point win over the Clippers, 111-98. Denver outscored Los Angeles, 62-27 over a dizzying 20-minute stretch of the second half.

Nikola Jokic (NEE'-koh-lah YOH'-kich) had 34 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists for Denver, which also faced a 3-1 series deficit before downing Utah. Jamal Murray scored 21 for the Nuggets, who also got 16 from Gary Harris.

Paul George had 33 points and Kawhi (kah-WY') Leonard scored 25 for the Clippers.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — A person with knowledge of the situation says head coach Mike D'Antoni has told the Houston Rockets that he won't be back next season.

It was not totally unexpected. The Rockets and D'Antoni couldn't agree on an extension last year, meaning he was coaching this season with no guarantee of his future in Houston. 

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — The Tampa Bay Lightning used a quick-strike attack to take a three-games-to-one lead in the NHL's Eastern Conference final.

The Lightning are one win away from their first trip to the Stanley Cup final since 2015 following a 4-1 win over the Islanders.

The Lightning's first two goals came 12 seconds apart midway through the second period. Blake Coleman tied it 15 seconds after Brock Nelson gave the Islanders the lead. Ondrej Palat (AHN'-dray pah-LAHT') made it 2-1 at the 11:54 mark.

Bayden Point added an insurance goal 3:33 into the third, returning to the ice after a one-game injury absence.

Pat Maroon added an empty-netter and Andre Vasilevskiy (va-sih-LEHV'-skee) made 26 saves for Tampa Bay.

Isles netminder Semyon Varlamov (SEHM'-yahn vahr-LAH'-mahv) was brilliant at times while stopping 32 of 35 shots.

Newton runs for 2 TDs, Patriots hold off Dolphins 21-11

UNDATED (AP) — The New England Patriots' new quarterback had a better day than the old one.

Cam Newton rushed for two touchdowns and the Pats held on to beat the Dolphins 21-11. Newton rushed for 15 times for 75 yards and threw for 155 yards. He guided an offensive attack that did most of its damage on the ground in their first game since the departure of Tom Brady this offseason. Sony Michel added a game-clinching TD run for New England. 

Brady was intercepted twice in his Tampa Bay debut, a 34-23 loss to the Saints. The first of Brady's interceptions led to Alvin Kamara's (kah-MAH'-rahz) 6-yard touchdown run. The second pick thrown by the new, 43-year-old Bucs QB was returned 36 yards for a touchdown by Janoris Jenkins.

Kamara scored touchdowns running and receiving, and 41-year-old Drew Brees (breez) passed for 160 yards and two TDs with no turnovers.

— The Rams opened their new stadium with a victory as Malcolm Brown rushed for a career-high 79 yards and two touchdowns in a 20-17 win over the Cowboys. Jared Goff passed for 275 yards as the Rams improved to 4-0 in openers under coach Sean McVay.

Robert Woods had six catches for 105 yards to help the Rams improve to 4-0 in season openers under coach Sean McVay and spoiled the debut of Mike McCarthy, Dallas' first new head coach in a decade.

— DeAndre Hopkins had a career-high 14 catches for 151 yards in his Arizona debut and set up Kenyan Drake's 1-yard TD run with 5:03 to help the Cardinals down the 49ers, 24-20. — Gardner Minshew threw three touchdown passes, including a 22-yarder to Keelan Cole in the fourth quarter of the Jaguars' 27-20 victory over the Colts. Ninshew completed 19 of 20 passes for 173 yards and no turnovers. 

— Josh Jacobs ran for 93 yards and three touchdowns, Derek Carr threw for 239 yards and a score as the Raiders hung on to beat the Panthers, 34-30 to spoil Matt Rhule's coaching debut. Jacobs' 6-yard touchdown run around the right end with 4:14 left in the game put the Raiders ahead for good after they'd surrendered a 12-point fourth-quarter lead. 

— Mitchell Trubisky lofted a 27-yard, go-ahead touchdown pass to Anthony Miller with 1:54 remaining to lift the Bears over the Liongs, 27-23. Alec Mills has tossed baseball's second no-hitter of the season, with both coming from Chicago hurlers. He became the 16th Cubs pitcher to toss a no-no by going the distance for the first time in his major league career, beating the Brewers' 12-0.

He is 5-3 with a 3.94 ERA in nine starts but has allowed 11 runs in his last two outings after giving up just nine earned runs in 41 2/3 innings over his first seven. 

Thiem rallies to beat Zverev in U.S. Open final

NEW YORK (AP) — Dominic Thiem (teem) has earned his first major title while making history at the U.S. Open.

The second-seeded Thiem is the first man in 71 years to win tournament after dropping the first two sets of the final, storming back to beat No. 5 Alexander Zverev (ZVEHR'-ehv), 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6. It's the first time the men's final has been decided by a fifth-set tiebreak.

Thiem entered Sunday with an 0-3 career record in major title matches. This was Zverev's debut in a Grand Slam final.

La.-Lafayette leads 10 new teams in rankings

UNDATED (AP) — Louisiana-Lafayette and Appalachian State are among 10 new teams ranked in first regular-season Associated Press college football poll, which was stripped of the teams not yet scheduled to play a fall season.

There was no change at the very top: Preseason No. 1 Clemson received 60 of 61 first place-votes this week.

Alabama moved up to No. 2. Oklahoma is No. 3, followed by Georgia and Florida. Defending champion LSU, with one first-place vote, is No. 6.

Among the new teams in the rankings were Sun Belt powerhouses Louisiana-Lafayette at No. 19 and Appalachian State at No. 24. Louisiana-Lafayette was last ranked in 1943.

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (AP) — Mirim Lee birdied the first playoff hole to capture the ANA Inspiration.

Lee chipped in three times Sunday, the last one for eagle on the final hole that got her into a three-way playoff. She was never in the lead at any point until she calmly holed a 5-foot birdie putt on the 18th to beat Nelly Korda and Brooke Henderson, who each had the lead on the back nine.

Lee closed with a 5-under 67 to finish at minus-15.

NAPA, Calif. (AP) — Stewart Cink has won the season-opening Safeway Open at 47 years old for his seventh PGA Tour victory and first since the 2009 British Open.

Cink closed with a 7-under 65, rebounding from a bogey on the 17th with a birdie on the 18th for a two-stroke victory over Harry Higgs.

Cink is the oldest PGA Tour winner since Phil Mickelson at 48 at Pebble Beach in February 2019.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Miguel Angel Jimenez has completed a wire-to-wire victory in the Sanford International, the PGA Tour Champions' first event with fans since returning from a break for the coronavirus pandemic.

Jimenez closed with a 5-under 65 at Minehaha Country Club to beat Steve Flesch by a stroke. The 56-year-old Spanish star won for the second time this season and 10th on the 50-and -over tour.

Sun Belt rivals Louisiana-Lafayette and Appalachian State were among 10 new teams ranked Sunday in first regular-season Associated Press college football poll, which was stripped of the teams not yet scheduled to play a fall season.

After all Division I teams were eligible to be voted on for the preseason Top 25, the panel of 61 voters was permitted to consider only the 60% of Football Bowl Subdivision teams scheduled to play in the fall now that the season has started.

That meant preseason No. 2 Ohio State, No. 7 Penn State and No. 9 Oregon, along with six other Big Ten and Pac-12 teams, dropped out of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll">rankings</a>. The Big Ten, Pac-12, Mid-American Conference and Mountain West have delayed their seasons due to concerns about playing amid the coronavirus pandemic, but the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/c4576e6af10849ed513317841831cbff">Big Ten is taking some steps</a>&nbsp;toward a possible mid-October start.

With those teams gone, Alabama moved up to No. 2. Oklahoma is No. 3, followed by No. 4 Georgia and No. 5 Florida. Defending champion LSU, with one first-place vote, is No. 6.

The Sun Belt Conference has two teams ranked for the first time since the conference began sponsoring football in 2001, with Louisiana-Lafayette at No. 19 and Appalachian State at No. 23, tied with Kentucky.

The Ragin’ Cajuns pulled off maybe the biggest upset of the weekend, winning at Iowa State 31-14 on Saturday. The Cyclones had been ranked No. 23 and are the one team currently scheduled to play to fall out of the rankings after being in the preseason Top 25.

Louisiana-Lafayette was last ranked in 1943.

— No. 16 Memphis has the highest ranking of those teams entering the poll. Not surprising. The Tigers were first among the others receiving votes in the preseason poll and opened the season by beating Arkansas State last week. That same Arkansas State then turned around and upset Kansas State on the road Saturday. The Tigers might have to sit on that ranking for a little while. Players being sidelined by positive COVID-19 tests and related quarantines forced the postponement of Memphis’ game Friday against Houston.

— No. 17 Miami also garnered some support in the preseason. The Hurricanes join on the strength of a 31-14 victory Thursday against Conference USA contender UAB.

— No. 18 Louisville beat Western Kentucky 35-21 to open its season and is ranked for the first time since 2017.

— No. 20 Virginia Tech has already had two games postponed. The Hokies were supposed to open their season Saturday against North Carolina State, but the Wolfpack’s preparation for the season was delayed by a COVID-19 outbreak. Now Virginia Tech is dealing with coronavirus issues of its own and its game next week against Virginia has been postponed.

— No. 21 BYU opened the season on Labor Day, beating Navy 55-3. But the Cougars’ next game has been postponed because of positive COVID-19 cases among the players.

— No. 22 Army has opened the season with two victories by a combined score of 79-7.

— No. 23 Kentucky is scheduled to start the season Sept. 26, along with the rest of the SEC.

— No. 25 Pitt opened the season by beating Austin Peay 55-0 in a game that was shortened in the second half. With the Panthers up 42-0 halftime, the teams agreed to play 10-minute quarters.

Playing before an empty stadium due to COVID-19, Coastal Carolina turned three Kansas first-half turnovers into 21 points as the Chanticleers scored touchdowns on four of their first five possessions to go up 28-0. After stalling Coastal Carolina’s opening drive of the second half, Kansas went 89 yards in 15 plays with junior quarterback Miles Kendrick hitting senior wide receiver Andrew Parchment on a 14-yard touchdown pass. Kendrick then connected with senior Kwamie Lassiter II on the two-point conversion to make the score 28-11. For the game, Kendrick completed 15 of his 24 pass attempts for a total of 156 yards and two touchdowns. Parchment hauled in six receptions for 54 yards on the night, also scoring one touchdown.

Kansas’ defense then forced a Coastal Carolina three-and-out and on its next drive. KU sophomore running back Velton Gardner raced 61 yards for a touchdown to make the score 28-17 after three quarters. It would be the closest the Jayhawks would come in the second half. Gardner ended the night as KU’s leading rusher with 81 yards on 11 carries.

Coastal Carolina then went on an 81-yard drive with a two-yard score by quarterback Grayson McCall to make it 35-17, but KU would once again respond. Kendrick hit Lassiter with a five-yard touchdown pass to make the score 35-23. Lassiter hauled in five catches for 63 yards for the game.

The Chanticleers would add a late field goal to give Coastal Carolina its second-straight win in as many seasons versus KU, with a final score of 38-23.

Next, Kansas will take a week off and open Big 12 play at Baylor on Saturday, Sept. 26. Kickoff time and television designation for the KU-BU contest have yet to be announced.

🏈 Kansas Falls in Season Opener to Coastal Carolina

The Hutchinson, Buhler and Nickerson volleyball teams had excellent weekends.

The Hutchinson Salthawk Freshman team went 3-1 on the day getting wins over Great Bend, Derby and Garden City while dropping a game to Salina Central.&nbsp; The Crusaders Freshman won over Newton, Great Bend and Garden City at the Hutchinson Freshman Volleyball Invitational. 

Nickerson Varsity squad went 5-0 at the Ellsworth Tournament with wins over Ellsworth, Sacred Heart and Republic County 2-0 and Central Plains and Ellinwood in three to win the tournament.

Also on Saturday, Buhler and Hutch High both won on the soccer pitch, Buhler was a 6-0 winner over El Dorado and Hutchinson won over Valley Center 2-0.

Saturday high school results positive for Reno County schools

MANHATTAN, Kan. –&nbsp;When Ty Zentner’s opening kick sailed through the back of the end zone on Saturday morning, K-State pulled off the upset against an opponent they have battled since March.

But it was the opponent that arrived at Bill Snyder Family Stadium on Saturday that caused problems for the Wildcats in a 35-31 loss to Arkansas State.

Will Jones II blocked the first punt of the game and Deuce Vaughn scored the first touchdown of his K-State career, but a locked in Arkansas State passing attack doomed the Wildcats in the season opener.

It marked the first season-opening defeat in Manhattan for K-State since a loss to North Dakota State in 2013, when Chris Klieman was on the Bison sideline as a defensive coordinator.

“I said to the guys in the locker room, this is the kind of adversity we’re going to face all year,” Klieman said. “We were down to our third team center. I thought Hayden Gillum did a great job. Down to our third team safety, I thought Ryan Henington did a great job. But that being said, it’s frustrating when you take a loss.”

Playing their first game after an offseason dominated by COVID-19 precautions, K-State hosted socially distanced fans at Bill Snyder Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon for their only non-conference game of 2020.

With temperature checks at the gate, social distancing in the stands and masks throughout the stadium, it was a season opener unlike any other in Manhattan.

“I was nervous up till 4:30- 5:00 on Friday that we would even be playing this game,” Klieman said. “I was just so excited for the guys. There’s been a lot of stress and anxiety on the guys about whether we’re going to play or not.”

It wasn’t perfect, but it was unmistakably college football.

In their latest season opener since 1992, K-State out-possessed Arkansas State by almost nine minutes but had no answer for receiver Jonathan Adams Jr. and a Red Wolves defense that caused problems in the trenches.&nbsp;

Vaughn, a true freshman, racked up 71 all-purpose yards in his first college game and flashed the potential to be a four-year force in the K-State backfield.

His 24-yard reception helped get the Wildcats in business in the second quarter, before Vaughn punched it in from three yards out for the first touchdown of his college career.

“It is honestly surreal. Last night I went to bed dreaming about scoring my first touchdown in Bill Snyder Family Stadium and playing for the Wildcats,” Vaughn said. “Whenever I got the opportunity and I hit it and I got in the end zone, I didn’t know what to think. I was so excited and I look forward to doing it over and over again.”

Harry Trotter added another rushing touchdown on the afternoon for K-State.

It took only five plays on Saturday for Jones II to put his stamp on the 2020 season, when the freshman got a jump off the edge and blocked the first punt of the game for the Wildcats.

It was the first blocked punt of his career, but Jones II – who appeared in four games last season while retaining his redshirt – wasn’t done making an impact against Arkansas State.

Later in the quarter, he picked off Red Wolves quarterback Logan Bonner, setting up the Wildcats at midfield before Vaughn put K-State up 14-7.

It was a lead the Wildcats would protect until the fourth quarter.

Even after falling behind, K-State scored 10 straight points to retake a 31-28 lead late in the game following a 35-yard field goal by Blake Lynch.

The Red Wolves responded with a 65-yard drive inside the game’s final two minutes.

Bonner threw for 204 yards to lead Arkansas State on the afternoon, but it was Layne Hatcher who found Adams Jr. for the game-winning touchdown with 38 seconds to go in Manhattan.

“This week off should give us a couple guys back and a couple guys [a chance] to get their body’s right. We will get prepared for Big 12 play,” senior linebacker Justin Hughes said.

The Wildcats had a few shots at the endzone in the final seconds, but Skylar Thompson couldn’t write a heroic ending to an afternoon when he finished with 259 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns.

“I thought our guys stepped up and did a great job and kept fighting, that’s what it’s about,” Thompson said. “Things didn’t go our way today, but sometimes that’s part of it. That’s just part of life. You just keep fighting. That’s my approach and that’s this team’s approach, and we are not giving up. We are not going to let this team define us and how this season is going to go.”

Kansas State will return to action in two weeks when the Wildcats travel to Norman, where they will face No. 5 Oklahoma in the Big 12 opener for both teams. It will be the first matchup between the schools since K-State beat the Sooners 48-41 in Manhattan last season.

Cats Fall to Arkansas State in Season Opener

GARDEN CITY, Kan. — The Hutchinson Salthawk football team dug deep into their bag of tricks Friday night to come out of Garden City with a 21-20 victory.

That bag contained many players training on both sides of the ball this off season and the time came for senior linebacker Jack Hawver to slide into the fullback position with the offense and drive down the field late in the 4th quarter to set up a 1 yard dive for quarterback Myles Thompson to tie the game at 20-20.&nbsp; Carter Booe added the extra point to give the Salthawks their first lead of the night 21-20.

Garden City's productive&nbsp; offense was not done however as they drove deep into Hutchinson territory before incomplete passes and holding penalties became their demises as Hutchinson held and took over on downs to take a knee and get the win.&nbsp; The defensive secondary stepped up big in the closing minutes.

Hutchinson opens their 2020 home schedule on Friday as Maize South (2-0) comes to Gowans Stadium for a 7pm kickoff.&nbsp; It will be senior night for the Salthawks.&nbsp; Salthawk athletic director, Kevin Armstrong urges the fans to exercise social distancing and reminds that Gowens Stadium's COVID-19 capacity will be 25%.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Luis Castillo pitched a two-hitter for his first complete game in the majors, Joey Votto homered and the Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1. Castillo struck out six and walked three in winning his second straight start. He improved to 2-5. An All-Star last year, the right-hander made his 87th career start in the big leagues. Castillo outpitched Adam Wainwright, who allowed three runs in six innings. The Cardinals lost for the fourth time in six games.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs raised some eyebrows during the NFL draft when they used their first-round pick on Clyde Edwards-Helaire, adding another potent weapon to their dynamic offense rather than filling a pressing need on defense. Turns out that decision was downright brilliant. &nbsp;Edwards-Helaire shouldered a massive load with aplomb Thursday night. The slippery, pint-sized running back out of LSU carried 25 times for 138 yards with a touchdown in helping the Chiefs to a 34-20 victory over the Houston Texans in the opening game of the season.

UNDATED (AP) — The Big 12 has secured access to COVID-19 antigen testing that produces rapid results and will be used the day before competition on players, coaches and staff. The conference announced a partnership with Virtual Care for Families. The testing program will use Quidel Rapid Antigen tests. The Pac-12 recently announced a partnership with Quidel that will provide its schools with the capacity to test daily and get results in about 15 minutes. The Big 12 said it expects the Quidel test to provide results that quickly.

Celtics advance, end Raptors' reign; Nuggets extend series

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — The Toronto Raptors' reign as NBA champions lasted 14 1/2 months.

The Boston Celtics are going to the Eastern Conference finals following a 92-87 triumph over the Raptors in Game 7. Jayson Tatum scored 29 points and Jaylen Brown had 21 for the winners, who opened the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run to take an eight-point lead. Marcus Smart scored 16 points and Kemba Walker added 14, including a pair of game-clinching free throws with 7.9 seconds remaining.

Fred VanVleet scored 20 points for the Raptors, who were bidding to become the first NBA team to win four consecutive Game 7s.

The third-seeded Celtics will face the No. 5 Miami Heat beginning Tuesday.

Also in the NBA Playoffs, the Denver Nuggets continue to be the comeback kids, but it took one of their veterans to help them improve to 4-0 when facing elimination in this postseason.

The Nuggets have forced a Game 6 by rallying from a 15-point, third-quarter deficit to beat the Clippers, 111-105.

Los Angeles was up, 61-46 with 9:42 left in the third when Paul Millsap got hot. The 35-year-old veteran scored 14 of his 17 points in the period to help Denver get back into the game.

Nikola Jokic put the Nuggets ahead for the first time by draining a 3-pointer with 7:06 to play. Jokic finished with 22 points and 14 rebounds, while Jamal Murray had a team-high 26 points for Denver.

Kawhi Leonard scored 36 points and Paul George added 26 for the Clippers, who are searching for the franchise's first appearance in a conference finals.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — The New York Islanders hadn't won a game in this postseason when allowing more than two goals. They took that monkey off their backs while getting back in the NHL's Eastern Conference final.

The Isles blew a 3-1 lead in the third period before Brock Nelson scored with 3:25 remaining in a 5-3 victory over the Lightning. Nelson, Anthony Beauvillier (boh-VIH'-lee-ay) and Jean-Gabriel Pageau (PA'-zhoh) each finished with a goal and an assist as the Islanders pulled within 2-1 in the series.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Colorado's Nathan MacKinnon has won the Lady Byng Trophy given for sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with strong play.

He finished ahead of Toronto's Auston Matthews and St. Louis' Ryan O'Reilly in voting by the Professional Hockey Writers Association.

MacKinnon had a career-low 12 penalty minutes this season. No other forward averaged more ice time than MacKinnon's 21:13 average while taking fewer penalties.

— The Wild have acquired center Nick Bjugstad (BYOOG'-stad) from the Penguins for a conditional selection in the 2021 draft. The 28-year-old Minnesota native played in only 13 games for the Penguins in the virus-shortened 2019-20 season, missing a large portion due to a core muscle injury that required surgery.

The swap that includes the Penguins covering an unspecified portion of Bjugstad's $5.25 million salary next season.

NEW YORK (AP) — It was a couple of firsts for Alexander Zverev (ZVEHR'-ehv) at the U.S. Open as he earned a meeting with Dominic Thiem (teem) in Sunday's men's final.

Zverev is in the men's final of a Grand Slam for the first time after storming back from a two-sets deficit to beat a fading Carreño Busta, (sah-REH'-noh BOOS'-tah), 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3. 

Zverev had never won a match after dropping the opening two sets. He appeared in serious trouble after dropping nine straight points and 17 of 19 before righting the ship.

Zverev is the first man to win a U.S. Open semifinal after a 2-0 set deficit since Novak Djokovic (JOH'-koh-vihch) did it against Roger Federer in 2011.

Thiem won a far more entertaining match, holding off 2019 U.S. Open runner-up Daniil (DAN-ihl') Medvedev 6-2, 7-6, 7-6. Medvedev held a set point in both the second and third, but Thiem hung in there both times and now will try to improve his 0-3 record in Grand Slam finals. 

Medvedev was a point away from taking the third set at 5-3, 40-30, but framed a forehand. 

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees entered their weekend series with Baltimore in danger of falling behind the Orioles for the final American League wild-card berth. The Bombers are off to a good start, winning a doubleheader from the Orioles after dropping 15 of their previous 21 games.

Gerrit Cole ended a three-start losing streak by firing a two-hitter in the Yankees' 6-0 win over the Birds in Game 1. He struck out nine in ending his personal skid that began after he had won 20 straight decisions.
