DETROIT (AP) — The New York Rangers have sent defenseman Marc Staal to the Detroit Red Wings, along with a second-round draft pick in 2021 for future considerations.

The 33-year-old Staal had two goals and nine assists in 52 games this past season. 

The Wings also signed forward Sam Gagner (GAHN'-yay) to a one-year contract extension. The 31-year-old Gagner has 164 goals and 295 assists in 844 games.

LeMahieu batting title, Voit HR crown near as Yanks win

UNDATED (AP) — The Chicago Cubs were able to wrap up the NL Central title despite losing to the White Sox.

Yoan Moncada homered and the White Sox kept their AL Central title hopes alive by defeating the Cubs, 9-5. José Abreu hit a three-run double for the White Sox, who remain one game behind the AL Central-leading Twins.

The White Sox will win their division with a win over the Cubs on Sunday and a Minnesota loss to Cincinnati.

The Brewers kept their playoff hopes alive and allowed the Cubs to clinch the NL Central by blanking the Cardinals, 3-0. Ryan Braun and Daniel Vogelbach hit back-to-back homers in the fourth to back Brandon Woodruff, who allowed two hits in eight innings.

KU (0-2, 0-1 Big 12) got off to a fast start in its second game of the season, scoring on the first drive of Saturday night’s game at Baylor. True freshman quarterback Jalon Daniels got his first-career start and completed two passes during an eight-play, 79-yard drive, one each to senior wide receivers Andrew Parchment (four yards) and Stephon Robinson Jr. (23 yards). Pooka Williams Jr., then rushed 21 yards for his first touchdown of the season and 11th&nbsp;of his Kansas career.

Baylor (1-0, 1-0 Big 12) responded with a touchdown two plays later to tie the game at 7-7. The Bears also scored on their next two drives to take a 17-7 lead into the locker room at halftime.

After scoring two touchdowns in the second quarter, BU accomplished the same feat in the third quarter before tallying a safety and the team’s fifth touchdown of the night in the final 15 minutes of play. In the second half, Baylor senior running back Tresten Ebner took two KU kickoffs to the end zone, the first a 100-yard return and the second from 83 yards out.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Kansas’ Williams scored his second touchdown of the evening on a 16-yard rush. The junior from New Orleans, Louisiana, recorded 70 yards for the game, just surpassing his 67 against Coastal Carolina on Sept. 12. Redshirt-freshman kicker Jacob Borcila’s point-after-attempt was good, making the score 40-14 with 7:03 to play in the game.

The home team came right back on the next possession, scoring its sixth touchdown of the game on a 26-yard run by Craig Williams. John Mayers’ PAT was good, putting the Bears ahead by a score of 47-14 with four minutes remaining on the clock.

For the game, KU’s rookie quarterback, Daniels, completed 19 of his 33 pass attempts for a total of 159 yards. Williams and sophomore running back Velton Gardner led the Jayhawks in rushing with 76 and 70 yards, respectively, on 14 attempts apiece. Senior wide receiver Kwamie Lassiter II was the top receiver for Kansas on the evening, catching six passes for 65 yards.

Kansas’ defense was led by sophomore safety Kenny Logan Jr., who tied his career high in tackles with seven. Senior linebacker Kyron Johnson was just behind with six while junior safety Davon Ferguson and senior cornerback Elijah Jones recorded five tackles each.

Maybe you want to focus on the 174 all-purpose yards from Deuce Vaughn, but you can’t ignore a defense, missing five players, that picked off Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler three times in a comeback win that tied for the largest in K-State history.

When you talk about the Saturday afternoon when Kansas State (1-1) made history in Norman with a 38-35 win over No. 3 Oklahoma (1-1), you could really start anywhere.

That’s when Klieman learned K-State would have enough players to face the Sooners, but would need to rely on seven Wildcats off the bench to fill out their two-deep roster in Norman.

“Great resolve by our guys and a great team win,” Klieman said. “A lot of short meetings and walkthroughs [this week], sending them things they could look at on their iPad, just having the older guys talk to them and try to show them as many things as we can.”

A short-handed K-State defense put their stamp on the game early.

On Oklahoma’s first drive of the afternoon, Elijah Sullivan grabbed a tipped pass at the line of scrimmage for his first interception of the year.

Later in the half, Justin Gardner – one of those defensive players pressed into a starting role – went stride-for-stride with Oklahoma wide receiver Marvin Mims for the team’s second takeaway of the afternoon.

“I was excited for Justin Gardner’s opportunity to play a bunch,” Klieman said. “Knock on wood, who knows who’s going to be available next week? That’s what everyone has to realize on our team, and across college football, this is a great win, but now we’ve got to go back on Monday, see who’s available and get those guys ready to play.”

K-State couldn’t turn those early interceptions into points, but the Wildcats found a spark on offense late in the first half.

On 3rd and 18 near midfield, Skylar Thompson connected with Chabastin Taylor on a 39-yard dart to put K-State on the board. An otherwise quiet first half allowed the Sooners to take a 21-7 lead into the locker room.

Thompson was banged up again on Saturday but finished the afternoon with 334 yards passing.

“I was battling through a little injury and cramping, but there wasn’t anything taking me out,” Thompson said. “Everybody on the sidelines had great spirit, kept telling me to stick with it and trust the game plan. One play at a time.”

What happened after halftime will go down as one of the most impressive 30 minutes in the history of Kansas State football.

In his pregame interview, Klieman jokingly asked FOX color commentator Joel Klatt if he could step in at cornerback for a depleted K-State secondary.

So, that’s where the Wildcats were at when the team arrived in Norman.

“I came out a halftime and looked at Seth Porter before the third quarter started,” Thompson said. “I told him, ‘We’re going to win this game, Seth.’ He looked at me and said, ‘I have no doubt.’ There was just no doubt in our locker room at halftime that we could win this football game.”

The K-State defense went the distance on Saturday with the No. 3 team in the country. The Wildcats came up with a huge fourth-down stop to kick off the second half, shutting down Rattler in a short-yardage situation at midfield.

After Oklahoma found the end zone on their next drive, Thompson responded quickly with a 77-yard pass to Vaughn, giving the freshman a chance to show off the playmaking ability that has been one of the stories of the 2020 season.

And the ‘Cats weren’t done. Not even close.

The touchdown would be the first of four consecutive scoring drives for K-State, as the Wildcats erased a 35-14 deficit in the third quarter.

Vaughn posted 129 receiving yards and scored two touchdowns in his first college start on Saturday. The true freshman’s 174 all-purpose yards against Oklahoma helped cement an electric start to Vaughn’s career, through just two games with K-State.

“My Dad always tells me, ‘It’s about what you put in the ATM, Monday through Friday. On Saturday, you cash everything out.’ This team put a lot of things in the ATM,” Vaughn said. “Today, when it was time, we cashed everything out.”

Thompson tossed a 77-yard pass, a 78-yard pass and rushed for three touchdowns to help the Wildcats close the game on a 31-7 run. On their final drive of the game, the Wildcats set up a 50-yard game-winning field goal from Lynch.

“Dreamed about this for a while,” Lynch said. “Everybody at halftime believed that we could win. Coach Klieman got in there and was getting us hyped up. He never gave up on us.”

Oklahoma had the ball needing a touchdown to win the game, before Jahron McPherson came up with the game-winning interception to seal the win in the final seconds.

It’s the first time in K-State history the Wildcats have won two straight games over a top-five opponent, after a 48-41 win over No. 5 Oklahoma last season in Manhattan.

The Wildcats return to action on Saturday for their first Big 12 home game of the season against Texas Tech. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. in front of a national TV audience on FS1.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Niko Goodrum and Austin Romine keyed a three-run first inning and the Detroit Tigers edged the Kansas City Royals 4-3.

 Detroit got to Kansas City right-hander Carlos Hernandez on Goodrum’s RBI single and Romine followed with a two-run double. Willi Castro’s RBI single in the second made it 4-1. Adalberto Mondesi drove in two runs for Kansas City with a homer and a double. Matthew Boyd (3-7) pitched six innings, allowing five hits and three runs with three strikeouts for Detroit. The Tigers’ bullpen tossed three shutout innings. Bryan Garcia pitched the ninth for his fourth save of the season.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Salthawks found themselves in a shoot out on homecoming but took advantage of Newton Railer turnovers and big plays to come out on top 54-42 at Gowans Stadium Friday night.

The Salthawks got a huge night again from senior running back Alec McCuan who amassed 208 yards on 22 carries and scored 4 touchdowns.&nbsp; Sophomore Noah Khokhar added 106 yards on 7 carries and&nbsp; 2 touchdowns including a rushing touchdown in the first quarter from 61 yards out plus he tacked on a huge late back-breaking 50 yard TD pass from Hutch Senior QB Myles Thompson with 5:58 to go in the game. That pushed the Hutchinson lead back up to 12 after Newton had made it a 1 possession game at 33-28 with a TD catch by Newton's Xzavion Martin.

Alec McCuan then added his final 2 touchdowns on the night pounding several carries up the middle to seal the win.

Hutchinson's 4-0 start is the best start the Salthawks have had since 2009 when Hutchinson went undefeated and won their 6th of 7 State Championships. That year, Hutchinson was also in class 5A.

Next action is on the road at defending 6A Champion Derby next Friday night.&nbsp; Derby had to postpone their game with Salina South Friday due to COVID-19.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Salthawks found themselves in a shoot out on homecoming but took advantage of Newton Railer turnovers and big plays to come out on top 54-42 at Gowans Stadium Friday night.The Salthawks got a huge night again from senior running back Alec McCuan who amassed 208 yards on 22 carries and scored 4 touchdowns.&nbsp; Sophomore Noah Khokhar added 106 yards on 7 carries and&nbsp; 2 touchdowns including a rushing touchdown in the first quarter from 61 yards out plus he tacked on a huge late back-breaking 50 yard TD pass from Hutch Senior QB Myles Thompson with 5:58 to go in the game. He now wants to spend more time with his family and "catch up on things I've missed my whole life."&nbsp;

Adalberto Mondesi had four hits and two RBIs, Perez had two hits and three RBIs, and Jorge Soler plated one. (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Thursday top cornerback Charvarius Ward, who missed last week's win over the Chargers with a fractured hand, would return to practice in some capacity and could play in their Monday night showdown against the Ravens. The Chiefs are also due to get back Mike Pennel, their run-stuffing defensive tackle, who had to serve a two-game suspension to start the season. Both players should help a defense that has been fairly stout the first two weeks.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — TCU receiver Taye Barber and his teammates have been itching to get back on the field. The Horned Frogs are finally set to open their season with a Big 12 game against Iowa State. It will be their first game in 10 months because their only non-conference game was wiped out because of COVID-19. Iowa State is also motivated to play again, even though it has been only two weeks for the Cyclones. They were in the Top 25 before a 31-14 home loss to Louisiana-Lafayette. Saturday's game will be the opener of Gary Patterson's 20th season as TCU's coach.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — In one sense, the Los Angeles Lakers are one win away from a berth in the NBA Finals after taking a 3-1 series lead against the Denver Nuggets. In another sense, the Nuggets have the Lakers right where they want them.

Anthony Davis scored 34 points and LeBron James had 26 in the Lakers' 114-108 victory over the Nuggets in the Western Conference finals. Davis made his first six shots before another Laker made a basket.

James added nine rebounds and eight assists for Los Angeles, which had 12 offensive rebounds for a whopping 25-6 advantage in second-chance points. 

Jamal Murray had 32 points and eight assists, but Nikola Jokic (nih-KOH'-lah YOH'-kihch) battled foul trouble and finished with just 16 points and seven rebounds. 

The Nuggets are in a familiar position down 3-1 heading into Game 5 on Saturday. They were in identical situations in the first two rounds, only to storm back to beat the Jazz and Clippers.

UNDATED (AP) — There's great news for West Coast football fans.

The Pac-12 has decided to play football this fall, reversing an August decision to postpone until spring because of concerns over COVID-19. 

The conference's CEO group of university presidents voted unanimously to resume football and basketball, lifting a Jan. 1 moratorium on athletic competition for Pac-12 schools. The football season will begin in early November and culminate with a championship game to be held on Dec. 18. 

The men's and women's basketball seasons can start Nov. 25, in line with the NCAA's recently announced opening date.

The Pac-12 is the latest Power-5 conference to reverse course after announcing the football season would be postponed. The Big Ten will open its season next month after initially deciding to delay or if necessary, cancel the season. The ACC and Big 12 began their seasons this month and the SEC starts up on Saturday.

UNDATED (AP) — The Cleveland Indians have rebounded nicely since an eight-game losing streak seemed to knock them out of contention for the AL Central title.

The Indians completed a four-game sweep of the White Sox by putting together a four-run seventh in a 5-4 victory against the former division leaders. José Ramírez delivered a go-ahead, two-run double in the seventh, giving him a .485 average with eight homers and 20 RBIs over his last 13 games.

Chicago scored three times in the top of the seventh to take a 4-1 lead before suffering its fifth consecutive loss. The latest setback leaves the White Sox one game behind the division-leading Twins and one game ahead of Cleveland for the fourth seed in the AL.

(AP) — NASCAR has fined Hendrick Motorsports $100,000 for exceeding the amount of wind tunnel testing allowed in a year. The organization has also been docked 10 hours of wind tunnel time for next year. The testing is defined as billable hours reported by the wind tunnel.
