Mondesi, 25, led the team in runs (22), hits (32), extra-base hits (14), RBI (20, tied) and on-base percentage (.408), and his 16 stolen bases led the Majors, seven more than anyone else. He became the eighth player in Major League history to record the combination of 14 extra-base hits and 16 stolen bases in a calendar month, and the first since José Reyes in April of 2007. Mondesi had a home run and a stolen base in three straight games from September 10-12, joining Bobby Abreu (May 12-15, 2004) as the only players since 1900 to accomplish that feat, according to Elias. He recorded a hit in nine straight at-bats from September 24-26, one shy of the club record set by Joe Randa from June 8-12, 1999. Mondesi walked twice during that stretch to mark 11 straight plate appearances reaching safely, matching the club record held by Randa, Steve Braun (August 7-17, 1978) and Amos Otis (April 30-May 2, 1970). Kansas State trailed by 21 points twice against the third-ranked Sooners, including a 35-14 deficit late in the third quarter. The Wildcats then scored 24 unanswered points en route to a 38-35 victory. It was K-State’s first road win ever over a team ranked in the top five of the Associated Press Top 25 poll.

The 21-point comeback tied with four other games for the largest comeback in school history, however the contest at OU was the latest to start the comeback as the Wildcats’ began their 24-point run with 1:36 left in the third quarter.

K-State now has a pair of top-five victories in Klieman’s two seasons as head coach after the Wildcats defeated the fifth-ranked Sooners, 48-41, last season in Manhattan. It marked the first time in school history that Kansas State defeated a top-five team in consecutive seasons.

The Wildcats, now 1-1 on the year and 1-0 in Big 12 play, will host its conference home opener this Saturday against Texas Tech. Kickoff is slated for at 2:30 p.m., and the game will be shown on FS1.

Just about everything Mahomes did worked against an overmatched Baltimore defense that had allowed only two touchdowns in its first two games. Mahomes threw four touchdown passes to help the Chiefs emphatically ended the Ravens' 14-game regular season winning streak while extending their own run to 12 games, including playoffs. Jackson is 21-4 as the Ravens' starting quarterback, with three of those losses to Mahomes and the Chiefs.

UNDATED (AP) — It took one week for the Big 12 to bring just a little more strangeness to the year 2020. Five-time defending conference champion Oklahoma opened league play with a shocking home loss to Kansas State, perhaps opening the door for another program to finally to step in and claim the title. Iowa State can put Oklahoma's season on the ropes Saturday when the Cyclones host the Sooners. Iowa State beat the Sooners in 2017 and lost to them by a point in 2019. &nbsp;&nbsp;

(AP) — The Kansas City Royals spent the 60-game season in 2020 saying farewell to longtime outfielder Alex Gordon, one of the linchpins of their back-to-back World Series runs, and welcome to the young core they hope will take them back there. Brady Singer nearly threw a no-hitter in his abbreviated rookie year. Fellow right-hander Kris Bubic made 10 starts and began to figure things out by the end of September. And their young bullpen, which was an abject failure last season, took massive strides from summer camp to the final out of the season Sunday with an eye toward the future.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Three years, three games, three defeats. The Baltimore Ravens just can't seem to beat Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, and after their latest loss Monday night, all they can do is hope for another shot down the road. Patrick Mahomes sliced up the Baltimore defense for 385 yards and four touchdowns in a 34-20 victory that really wasn't as close as it sounds. The Chiefs led 27-10 at halftime and let the margin shrink to seven points before Mahomes put together the clinching 13-play, 75-yard drive. Baltimore has lost to Kansas City in 2018, 2019 and this year.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — The Tampa Bay Lightning are the champions of bubble hockey. 

Brayden Point scored his playoff-best 14th goal, and the Lightning beat the Dallas Stars 2-0 to win the Stanley Cup and finish off the NHL playoffs staged in quarantine during the pandemic. 

The clock hitting zeros in an empty arena set off a wild celebration for a group that endured years of playoff heartbreak and two months in isolation. 

Goals from Point and Blake Coleman and a 22-save shutout by Andrei Vasilevskiy were enough to power the Lightning to their second championship in franchise history after winning it in 2004. 

Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. The playoffs became a showcase of the big Swede's skills on both ends of the ice. He also showed key leadership in the absence of injured captain Steven Stamkos.

Blackhawks acquire Pirri in trade with Golden Knights

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Blackhawks have acquired Brandon Pirri in a trade with the Vegas Golden Knights, reuniting the forward with his first NHL team. The Blackhawks sent Dylan Sikura to Vegas for the 29-year-old Pirri, who split last season between the Golden Knights and Chicago of the American Hockey League. The forward had two assists in 16 games with Vegas and 15 goals and 20 assists in 38 games with Chicago.

Pirri was selected by the Blackhawks in the second round of the 2009 draft and made his NHL debut with the club in 2010. 

Mahomes outplays Jackson to lead Chiefs past Ravens 34-20

BALTIMORE (AP) — Patrick Mahomes put on a scintillating show while outperforming Lamar Jackson, and the Kansas City Chiefs deftly played the role of defending Super Bowl champions in a 34-20 thumping of the Baltimore Ravens. 

Just about everything Mahomes did worked against an overmatched Baltimore defense that had allowed only two touchdowns in its first two games. Mahomes threw four touchdown passes to help the Chiefs emphatically end the Ravens' 14-game regular season winning streak while extending their own run to 12 games, including playoffs. 

Jackson is 21-4 as the Ravens' starting quarterback, with three of those losses to Mahomes and the Chiefs.

Doc Rivers out as Clippers' coach, after seven seasons

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Doc Rivers says he's out as coach of the Los Angeles Clippers, though did not specify if he chose to leave on his own or if he was fired. 

The Clippers say it was a mutual decision. 

Rivers announced in a statement posted to Twitter that he is not returning as coach. 

The move comes about two weeks after the Clippers wasted a 3-1 series lead and lost to the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference semifinals. 

Rivers spent seven seasons with the Clippers, making the playoffs in six of them — major success for a once-woebegone franchise. 

This season's team, with the summer 2019 additions of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, was expected to compete for an NBA championship.

NFL's Texans to allow fans for Vikings game

UNDATED (AP) — The Houston Texans will have up to 13,300 fans at NRG Stadium for their game Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.

The move comes after the Texans played without fans in their home opener on Sept. 20. The number of fans permitted is about 20% of stadium capacity. The team expects to allow the same number of fans at each of the remaining seven home games.

Fans age 10 and older will be required to wear masks while in the stadium unless they're actively eating or drinking. No tailgating will be allowed.

— Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy has confirmed Nick Foles will start at quarterback Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts. Nagy made the announcement today after hedging Sunday following the Bears' 30-26 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. Foles had come on in relief of an ineffective Mitchell Trubisky.

— After completing a winless September with their 28-10 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sunday, the Broncos will now be without defensive lineman Jurrell Casey for the rest of the year. After thinking about it overnight, Pederson changed his mind. Pederson said Monday he should've called a pass down the field on fourth-and-12 instead of punting.

Johnstone, 2-time WS champ and popular prankster, dies at 74

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jay Johnstone, who won World Series championships as a versatile outfielder with the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers while being baseball's merry prankster, has died. He was 74. 

His daughter, Mary Jayne Sarah Johnstone, says her father died last weekend of complications from COVID-19 and he also had suffered from dementia in recent years. 

In the 1981 World Series, Johnstone had a pinch-hit, two-run homer in Game 4 that rallied the Dodgers to an 8-7 win over the Yankees. 

— Slumping slugger Gary Sánchez will be benched in favor of Kyle Higashioka in the New York Yankees lineup for their wild-card opener. Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed Monday that Higashioka would catch ace Gerrit Cole to start the best-of-three series against the Cleveland Indians. With Giancarlo Stanton set to start at designated hitter, Sánchez — a two-time All-Star — won't crack the starting lineup and will instead be available to pinch-hit.

Notre Dame COVID-19 outbreak affects 39 players

UNDATED (AP) — Notre Dame says it has 39 football players in isolation or quarantine as it deals with the COVID-19 outbreak that forced the team to postpone last week's game at Wake Forest. 

The Fighting Irish are not slated to play again until Oct. 10 at home against Florida State. 

In a news release, Notre Dame said 18 football players tested positive last week, seven of which had already been quarantined after contact tracing had determined they'd been exposed to people who had already been infected. The school says a total of 25 players were in isolation after testing positive and another 14 were being quarantined after contact tracing. 

— Vanderbilt has changed its mind and will allow fans at sports events in October. The Commodores also will allow a limited number of students to attend Saturday night's football game with No. 20 LSU. Athletic director Candice Lee announced the reversal Monday, calling it a small step toward normalcy based on the guidance from the university's public health partners. Vanderbilt students are tested weekly with strict protocols on campus. The result is a low COVID-19 positivity rate. 

BALTIMORE (AP) — Kentucky Derby winner Authentic is the morning line favorite for Saturday's Preakness in Baltimore. Authentic is 9-5 on the morning line and drew the No. 9 post in a field of 11 horses. The race will be run without spectators.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Royals shortstop Adalberto Mondesi was named American League Player of the Week for the period of September 21-27, a stretch in which he hit a Major League-best .615 (16-for-26) in seven games.

Mondesi is the first Royals player to win the award since Jorge Soler from August 5-11, 2019, and he’s just the second Royals shortstop to earn American League weekly honors, joining Mike Aviles from July 28-August 3, 2008.

Mondesi led the Majors in runs (10), hits (16), stolen bases (5), batting average (.615), on-base percentage (.655), slugging percentage (1.154) and OPS (1.809) during the final week of the season, in which he led the Royals to a 5-2 record. Mondesi also tied for the American League lead with eight extra-base hits and his eight RBI were two shy of the American league lead.

Mondesi recorded a hit in nine consecutive at-bats over a three-game span last Thursday through Saturday, falling one hit shy of the club record of 10 straight hits held by Joe Randa from June 8-12, 1999. Mondesi also walked twice during that stretch to reach safely in 11 consecutive plate appearances, matching the club record previously done by Randa (June 8-12, 1999), Steve Braun (August 7-17, 1978) and Amos Otis (April 30-May 2, 1970).

Mondesi finished the season with multiple hits and at least one RBI in each of his last five games, matching the club record done seven times and last by Eric Hosmer from May 27-31, 2016. This stretch was tied for the second longest in the Majors this season, one game shy of Jared Walsh’s six-game run from September 10-16. Mondesi also had multiple extra-base hits in each of his last three games, matching the club record done eight times and last by Mike Sweeney from May 1-4, 2005.

On Thursday, Mondesi recorded his third career game with four hits and two steals, which are the second most such games in the Majors since 2010, one behind Ichiro Suzuki. He followed that up on Friday by falling a homer shy of the cycle with two stolen bases. In doing so, he became the first Royals player with three hits and multiple steals in consecutive games, and one of three players to do this in the Majors since 2010, joining Elvis Andrus (August 6-7, 2013) and Mike Trout (June 8-9, 2012). He also became the fourth player since 1901 to record at least three hits, two steals and an RBI in back-to-back games, joining Brady Anderson (July 11-15, 1999) and Davey Lopes (April 24-26, 1985) and George Sisler (July 15-16, 1920).

Mondesi homered on Saturday and Sunday to mark the fifth time he’s homered in consecutive games and second time this month (also 3 games from September 10-12). He finished the season-ending set vs. Detroit with 12 hits in 14 at-bats, matching George Brett (Sept. 12-14, 1975 vs. California) for the club record for most hits in a four-game series. In doing so, he became the first American League player to record 12 hits in a four-game series since Joe Mauer did it from August 1-4, 2016 at Cleveland.

On defense, Mondesi was perfect in his 30 total chances at shortstop over the seven-game stretch last week and turned five double plays, third most among American League shortstops.

🏈K-State’s Thompson Honored Nationally Following Oklahoma Game

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana and his wife confronted a home intruder who attempted to kidnap their 9-month-old grandchild over the weekend, law enforcement officials confirmed on Sunday.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Montana told deputies that his grandchild was sleeping in a playpen on Saturday when an unknown woman entered their home in Malibu and grabbed the child. Montana and his wife, Jennifer, confronted the woman, whom authorities later identified as Sodsai Dalzell, tried to “de-escalate the situation” and asked her to give back their grandchild.

After a tussle, law enforcement officials say Jennifer Montana pried the child out of Dalzell’s arms.

“Thank you to everyone who has reached out,” the former San Francisco 49ers star tweeted. “Scary situation, but thankful that everybody is doing well. We appreciate respect for our privacy at this time.”

The sheriff’s office says that Dalzell fled the home but was later arrested. She faces kidnapping and burglary charges.

It wasn’t immediately known if Dalzell had a lawyer who could speak on her behalf.

The sheriff’s office declined to release anymore information, citing that the case was still ongoing.

Montana, 64, retired after the 1994 season, playing 13 years of his 15 year-career with the San Francisco 49ers, which won four Super Bowls with him as starting quarterback.

The Milwaukee Brewers got a playoff spot despite a losing record, and so did Houston. The St. Louis Cardinals also advanced with a win. The best-of-three wild-card round begins Tuesday with four American League games. In a marquee matchup, Shane Bieber of the Cleveland Indians faces Gerrit Cole of the New York Yankees. The National League games start Wednesday, when the Brewers play at Dodger Stadium. There will be no fans permitted in ballparks for the opening round.

LOUIS (AP) — Harrison Bader tripled and homered to help the St. Louis Cardinals clinch a postseason berth on the final day of the regular season with a 5-2 win over Milwaukee, and the Brewers also earned a playoff spot Sunday via help on the West Coast moments later. St. Louis will be the fifth seed in the NL and will open a three-game wild-card series at San Diego on Wednesday. By winning, the Cardinals avoided having to travel to Detroit for two makeup games Monday. The Brewers will be the eighth seed after the San Diego Padres beat San Francisco 5-4.

UNDATED (AP) — The 2020 baseball season began with Juan Soto testing positive for COVID-19. Now he's a 21-year-old batting champion. Perhaps it was fitting. Soto finished atop the National League with a .351 average Sunday, becoming the youngest person to win the batting title in the NL. The Washington outfielder outlasted Atlanta's Freddie Freeman, who hit .341. Freeman went through his own ordeal with the coronavirus before the season. The fact that he and Soto accomplished this much was emblematic of a regular season that felt chaotic and uncertain at times — but ultimately reached the finish line.

UNDATED (AP) — Trestan Ebner turned in a once-in-a-quarter-century performance for Baylor over the weekend. He became the first player in the 25-year history of the Big 12 to score three different types of touchdowns in a game, and the first FBS player since 1996 to score a rushing touchdown, a receiving touchdown and multiple return touchdowns in a game. Ebner finished with 272 all-purpose yards in the Bears' 47-14 win over Kansas. Florida's Kyle Pitts had one of the best receiving days by a tight end. Oklahoma's 21-point lead against Kansas State was the biggest the Sooners had ever blown in a loss.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brady Singer finished his rookie season with a stellar performance, Alex Gordon wrapped up his long Royals career with a fond farewell and Kansas City ended its season with a 3-1 win over the Detroit Tigers. &nbsp;Adalberto Mondesi and Ryan McBroom homered for the Royals, who finished just above the last-place Tigers in the AL Central in their first season under manager Mike Matheny.

UNDATED (AP) — The relationship between Andy Reid and John Harbaugh grew roots in Philadelphia, and the two successful NFL coaches have remained friends despite competing against each other for supremacy in the AFC. Harbaugh used much of the knowledge he absorbed during his 10-year run as an Eagles assistant under Reid to become a successful head coach with the Baltimore Ravens. Although Reid and Harbaugh stay in close contact, communication was put on hold in the days leading up to the Monday night showdown between Reid's defending champion Kansas City Chiefs and the Ravens, who have won 14 straight regular-season games.

Heat dispose of Celtics to reach NBA Finals

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — The Miami Heat are going to the NBA Finals.

Bam Adebayo (ad-eh-BY'-oh) scored a season-high 32 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Heat closed out the Eastern Conference Finals in six games, rallying for a 125-113 win over the Celtics. Boston took its largest lead of the night at 96-90 before Adebayo and Tyler Herro (HEE'-roh) sparked a 26-6 run that put the Heat in control. 

Jimmy Butler scored 22 points in earning his first trip to the Finals. Herro finished with 19 points, more than half of it coming down the stretch.

Jaylen Brown had a team-high 26 points for the Celtics, who have been eliminated in the East finals three times in the last four seasons. Jayson Tatum had 24 and a career-high 11 assists in the loss, while Marcus Smart and Kemba Walker each scored 20.

The Heat square off against the Lakers on Wednesday. 

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Timberwolves guard Malik Beasley has been jailed on charges of drug possession and receiving and concealing stolen property. 

The Athletic first reported Beasley's arrest Saturday night at his suburban Minneapolis home. ESPN reported that police obtained a search warrant for the residence after a complaint that Beasley brandished a weapon at a person. Officers found marijuana and guns in the home. 

UNDATED (AP) — The Buffalo Bills improved to 3-0 this season despite blowing a 28-3 lead in the second half.

Josh Allen hit Tyler Kroft for a three-yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds left to give the Bills a 35-32 win over the Rams. Allen's fourth touchdown pass of the day came after Los Angeles scored 29 consecutive points to go ahead by four.

The Rams were poised to match the third-largest comeback in NFL regular season history after Jared Goff led the team to touchdowns on four straight drives, capped by Darrell Henderson's 1-yard run with 4:30 remaining. 

Los Angeles almost got the ball back on downs in the closing seconds, but a pass interference call gave Buffalo new life.

— Nick Foles replaced Mitchell Trubisky in the third quarter and tossed three touchdown passes over the final 6 1/2 minutes of the Bears' wild 30-26 comeback win over the Falcons. The Bears improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2013 after becoming the latest team to rally from a huge second-half deficit versus Atlanta.

— DK Metcalf made up for a huge first-half blunder by catching a 29-yard touchdown pass from Russell Wilson with 1:47 remaining in the Seahawks' 38-31 victory against the Cowboys. Wilson is the first NFL QB to throw 14 scoring passes in the first three games of a season after tossing five more versus Dallas.

— James Conner ran for 109 yards and the go-ahead touchdown midway through the fourth quarter as the Steelers rallied past Houston, 28-21. The Steelers improved to 3-0 for the first time in a decade by holding the 0-3 Texans under 60 total yards in the second half.

— The Packers are 3-0 after Aaron Rodgers passed for 283 yards and three touchdowns in a 37-30 win at New Orleans. Green Bay receiver Allen Lazard caught six passes for 146 yards and a TD, including gains of 48 and 72 yards on long throws that set up touchdowns.

— Nick Mullens threw for 343 yards and a touchdown to lead the 49ers to their second win at MetLife, 36-9 over the error-prone and winless Giants. Jerick McKinnon, Brandon Aiyuk and Jeff Wilson provided rushing TDs on a near flawless day for the Niners.
