Bob Davis is a storyteller - and an outstanding one at that.

As told in "Bob Davis - The Dream is Real" manuscript, "for 48 years, Davis told his stories on a broadcast platform touching nearly every level of competition from high school, to small college, to large university, to minor league, to major league sports. With his distinctive deep voice tinged with passion and emotion, he told a story that made us feel like we were right there.".-&nbsp;

I knew Bob when he was at KAYS radio and was named the voice of the Fort Hays Kansas State College Tigers in 1968 in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; Fort Hays was renamed Fort Hays State University in the early 70's. Let me clarify, I knew Bob....but he didn't know me.&nbsp; I was a sophomore at Fort Hays assisting various athletic teams as a student trainer and manager but when the Tigers were on the road, I'd listen to Boy on KAYS Radio describe all the action! Little did we know we had a mutual friend.&nbsp; Dennis Franz worked with Bob at KAYS and was my room mate after he returned from Vietnam to Fort Hays to renew his academic studies.&nbsp; Dennis introduced me to radio sports casting in 1985.&nbsp; My other meeting with Bob was at various Kansas Association of Broadcaster meeting trough the years.&nbsp; Our paths have crossed by association with several coaches and athletes in both Hays and Lawrence as well as sharing a couple of KAB and KSHSAA awards.&nbsp; Bob was named the Hod Humiston Award for Excellence in Broadcasting in 1991.&nbsp; I received the award in 2017.&nbsp; Bob won the Oscar Stauffer award for High School Broadcasting twice.&nbsp; I received the same honor this past spring.&nbsp; Doubt I'll win another, but maybe.&nbsp; Bob has an amazing memory which is probably what made him such a great story teller.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — D.J. Carton scored a career-high 20 points, and Greg Elliott and Dawson Garcia combined for 23 of their 28 in the second half to lead Marquette past No. 9 Creighton 89-84. The Golden Eagles came back from a 12-point deficit to take a lead and then held off a couple of late comeback bids by the Bluejays. Mitch Ballock went 8 of 13 on 3-pointers and had a season-high 26 points to lead Creighton. Denzel Mahoney added 21 points. Marquette beat the Bluejays for the first time in four meetings.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — It is perhaps a strange argument to make that the Kansas City Chiefs have a problem with complacency. They have won 12 of 13 games after winning their first Super Bowl in five decades last season. Yet the Chiefs, who lead the AFC and are positioned for a first-round playoff bye, also have gotten into a dangerous habit of letting big leads slip away — or, put another way, failing to bury opponents when they have a chance. The latest example came Sunday in Miami, where a 30-10 lead became a grab-the-onside kick situation in the fourth quarter to escape with a 33-27 victory.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Free agent reliever Greg Holland is staying with the Kansas City Royals. The right-hander has signed a one-year contact for $2.75 million. The 35-year-old Holland was 3-0 with six saves and a 1.91 ERA this season for Kansas City. He made 28 appearances and didn't permit a run in his final 13 games Holland is a three-time All-Star who made his major league debut with the Royals in 2010 and spent his first six seasons with them. He later pitched for Colorado, St. Louis, Washington and Arizona before rejoining the Royals in 2020.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Brice Calip and Elle Ruffridge scored 18 points apiece and No. 20 Missouri State scored its last 12 points from the foul line to defeat Missouri 72-58. The Bears led by as many as 18 points in the first half but Mizzou closed within 53-48 entering the fourth. Missouri State missed its last six shots after a Ruffridge basket made it 60-52 with just under seven minutes to go. But Calip made eight free throws to lead a 12-for-12 team effort to secure the win. Ladazhia Williams scored 15 points for the Tigers

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs overcame a 30-yard sack, four turnovers and a 10-point deficit to clinch their fifth consecutive AFC West title by beating Miami 33-27. Mahomes was picked off three times, his first multi-interception game in more than two years, but threw for 393 yards and two scores to help the Chiefs earn their eighth consecutive victory. It was the Chiefs' second consecutive comeback at Hard Rock Stadium, where they won the Super Bowl in February. Kansas City reached 12 wins for the third consecutive season, and has the best 13-game record in franchise history.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Luka Garza scored 23 points and Joe Wieskamp added 20 to help No. 3 Iowa beat Northern Illinois 106-53 on Sunday. Garza, who came into the game leading the nation in scoring at 30.4 points per game, added eight rebounds while playing just 20 minutes as coach Fran McCaffery used his reserves for much of the second half. It was a season high in scoring for Wieskamp, who played just 19 minutes. Iowa had its third game of 100 or more points. Adong Makuoi had 14 points and Anthony Crump had 10 for winless Northern Illinois.

UNDATED (AP) — Minnesota and Wisconsin will try again to keep their rivalry streak alive. The Big Ten announced the undercard to Saturday's conference title game between Ohio State and Northwestern. Wisconsin is set to host Minnesota on Saturday, and Indiana hosts Purdue on Friday night. Rutgers hosts Nebraska in Friday's other game. The rest of the Saturday slate includes Illinois at Penn State, Michigan at Iowa and Michigan State at Maryland. Minnesota and Wisconsin were supposed to play Nov. 28, but the game was canceled because of elevated COVID-19 cases in the Minnesota program. The teams have played every year since 1907.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Lamar Jackson came back in the nick of time to possibly save the Baltimore Ravens' season.

Jackson led two scoring drives after the two-minute warning and Justin Tucker nailed a 55-yard field goal with two seconds left as the Ravens survived a 47-42 win over the Browns at Cleveland.

Jackson had to go to the locker room in the fourth quarter due to cramping. He returned to the field just as backup Trace McSorley was being taken off the field with a left knee injury. One play later, Jackson hit Marquise Brown for a 44-yard TD on 4th-and-5 with 1:51 remaining to put the Ravens on top.

But the Browns weren't done, tying it on Baker Mayfield's 22-yards scoring strike to Kareem Hunt just 47 seconds late. Tucker's long kick put Baltimore ahead for good before Cleveland lateraled the ensuing kickoff into a game-ending safety.

Jackson finished with 162 yards passing and carried nine times for 124 yards and two touchdowns.

The outcome keeps the 9-4 Browns two games behind first-place Pittsburgh in the AFC North. The Ravens are another game back at 8-5.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jalen Hurts will spend a second week as the Philadelphia Eagles' starting quarterback after helping them earn a stunning 24-21 win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. 

The rookie was productive in place of Carson Wentz, rushing for 106 yards and passing for 167 yards and a touchdown. With Hurts at the helm, the Eagles built a 17-0 halftime lead and ended the Saints' nine-game winning streak.

Hurts has appeared in 12 games this season, running for 188 yards on 35 carries and throwing for 309 yards, two TDs and one interception.

— Broncos kicker Brandon McManus says he's going on the reserve/COVID-19 list because he's been in close contact with someone outside the team facility who has the novel coronavirus. McManus will self-isolate at a hotel and says he hopes to play Saturday against the Buffalo Bills. 

Owner says Cleveland could still play 2021 as Indians

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians are changing their name. They just don't know to what or when. 

Owner Paul Dolan told the Associated Press in an interview Monday that the team will continue to be called Indians until a new name is chosen. That process is in its early stages and it's possible the team will play their entire 2021 season as the Indians.

After months of discussions with a variety of groups, including Native Americans who have long protested against the team's use of a moniker and symbols that many deem racist, the American League team is dropping the name it has been known by since 1915.

Cleveland's move follows a similar decision earlier this year by the NFL's Washington Football Team, previously known as the Redskins.

UNDATED (AP) — The Boston Red Sox have signed outfielder Hunter Renfroe to a one-year deal. 

Renfroe has batted .228 with 97 home runs and 226 RBIs over five seasons with San Diego and Tampa Bay. The former first-round pick hit 25 or more homers in three straight seasons for the Padres. But he struggled with the Rays in the pandemic-shortened season this year, batting .156 with eight homers and 22 RBIs in 42 games. He homered twice in the postseason this year. 

— Free agent reliever Greg Holland is staying with the Royals after signing a one-year contract worth $2.75 million. The 35-year-old Holland was 3-0 with six saves and a 1.91 ERA in 28 appearances for Kansas City this year. The right-hander didn't permit a run in his final 13 games, covering 13 1-3 innings.

— Dusty Baker isn't sure if he'd like to manage the Houston Astros beyond the upcoming season. The 71-year-old Baker was hired in January to replace AJ Hinch, who was fired by the team after he and general manager Jeff Luhnow (LOO'-now) were suspended for one year by Major League Baseball for their roles in Houston's sign-stealing scandal. Washington pulls out of Pac-12 championship

UNDATED (AP) — Washington is out and Oregon is in as Southern California's opponent for the Pac-12 football championship game on Friday.

The Huskies have pulled out due to COVID-19 issues in the Huskies program. The school has determined the Huskies didn't have at least 53 scholarship players available and did not meet the minimum number of scholarship athletes at specific positions.

Washington coach Jimmy Lake said his team did not expect to have any offensive lineman - scholarship players or walk-ons - available to play this week because of positive tests and contact tracing.

— Vanderbilt has hired Notre Dame defensive coordinator Clark Lea as its new head coach. Lea has helped the Fighting Irish go 10-0 this season and rank eighth in the nation in yards allowed per play. The Nashville native and former Commodores fullback will try to revive a program that is 0-9 this season.

— Vanderbilt's season finale at No. 10 Georgia has been canceled with the Commodores falling below both the number of scholarship players available and position requirements. Vanderbilt was a 42-17 loser against Tennessee on Saturday after deciding to play despite having only 49 scholarship athletes available. Interim coach Todd Fitch had hoped to get some players back this week, but COVID-19 issues, contact tracing and opt-outs left Vanderbilt thin. 

Marquette rallies past Creighton...Rutgers whips Maryland

UNDATED (AP) — Marquette won its Big East Conference opener by downing the nation's No. 9 team.

Greg Elliott and Dawson Garcia combined for 23 of their 28 in the second half to lead Marquette past No. 9 Creighton 89-84. Elliott and Garcia scored 14 points apiece for the Golden Eagles, who came back from a 12-point deficit to take a lead before holding off a couple of late comeback bids by the Bluejays.

Marquette took control by holding Creighton to one field goal over five minutes while using a 19-7 spurt to create a 75-63 cushion with 5 1/2 minutes left.

D.J. Carton scored a career-high 20 points to help the Golden Eagles pin Creighton with its second loss. 

Mitch Ballock went 8 of 13 on 3-pointers and had a season-high 26 points to lead Creighton.

— Ron Harper Jr. poured in 19 of his 27 points after halftime to lead 19th-ranked Rutgers to a 74-60 win at Maryland. Harper shot 10-for-17 from the floor, including 5-for-8 from 3-point range, while providing five rebounds and four assists. The Scarlet Knights led by just two until Myles Johnson supplied a pair of dunks during a 10-0 run that made it 50-38 with 11:24 remaining. 

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The University of Florida says forward Keyontae Johnson was "following simple commands" Monday after being transferred from Tallahassee Memorial to UF Health in Gainesville. 

School officials added that Johnson is undergoing further tests and remains in critical but stable condition two days after he collapsed on the court during a game at Florida State. The SEC's preseason player of the year crumpled to the floor coming out of a timeout and received emergency medical attention.

UNDATED (AP) — No. 12 Wisconsin and No. 23 Louisville have rescheduled their Big Ten/ACC Challenge men's basketball matchup.

The two teams will face off Saturday at noon at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin.

Wisconsin initially was supposed to host Louisville on Dec. 9, but that game got postponed after Louisville announced it was pausing team-related activities due to a positive COVID-19 test and contact tracing measures within its program.

UNDATED (AP) — Gonzaga and Baylor top the latest AP Top 25 men's college basketball poll. 

Iowa, Michigan State and Kansas round out the top five. West Virginia and Tennessee climbed into the top 10. 

No. 16 Missouri, No. 24 Clemson and No. 25 Michigan were new additions to the poll. No. 21 Duke took the biggest tumble by falling 11 spots. No. 13 Illinois also slid seven spots to fall out of the top 10. 

The Big Ten has a national-best seven teams in the poll. Virginia Tech, Richmond and Arizona State fell out of the Top 25.

Meanwhile, DePaul has called off two more men's basketball games because of positive COVID-19 tests, pushing back the start of the season until at least next week. DePaul has canceled or postponed 10 games. The Blue Demons were scheduled to open Nov. 25 against Western Illinois at home.

Women's NCAA tournament to have single site

UNDATED (AP) — The NCAA plans to host the entire women's basketball NCAA Tournament in a single geographic area and San Antonio is the likely host site. 

The move was made to help mitigate the risks of COVID-19. The move matches that of the men's tournament, which is expected to be played in its entirety in Indianapolis. 

The women's Final Four was already set for San Antonio. The NCAA has begun preliminary talks with the Texas city to hold the entire 64-team tournament in the area. 

UNDATED (AP) — James Harden is practicing with the Houston Rockets, and coach Stephen Silas says he'll make his preseason debut Tuesday night.

What the first-year coach wasn't able to answer were questions about whether the superstar wants to be in Houston as talk swirls that he wants to be traded. Harden missed Houston's first two preseason games as he went through the NBA's COVID-19 testing protocols. 

— The Pistons have waived guard LiAngelo Ball and forwards Louis King and Anthony Lamb. Ball is the brother of Pelicans guard Lonzo Ball and Hornets lottery pick LaMelo Ball. LiAngelo Ball entered the 2018 NBA draft and was not selected.

Kim ties comeback record to win Women's Open

HOUSTON (AP) — A Lim Kim made a U.S. Women's Open debut she won't forget. 

The 25-year-old South Korean birdied her last three holes and tied the record for the largest comeback to win the biggest event in women's golf. That makes nine South Korean winners in the last 13 years at the U.S Women's Open. 

Kim won by one shot over Amy Olson and Jin Young Ko in frigid weather at Champions Golf Club in Houston. The Women's Open concluded Monday because of rain.

Citing three people familiar with the decision, The New York Times reported Sunday night that the team is moving away from a name considered racist for decades. The Indians have been internally discussing a potential name change for months.

A team spokesman told The Associated Press the franchise has no immediate comment on the report.

The Times said the team could make a formal announcement later this week. It’s not known when the name change will take effect or if the team has settled on a new moniker.

Cleveland’s move away from Indians follows a similar decision earlier this year by the NFL’s Washington Football Team, which was previously known as the Redskins.

For years, Native American groups and others have protested against Cleveland’s use of Indians as its name as well as other imagery used by the American League charter franchise founded in 1901. Last year, the team removed the contentious Chief Wahoo logo from its caps and jerseys, but the smiling, cartoonish mascot has remained popular and merchandise is still sold bearing its image.

The Indians have dealt with a backlash from fans upset over Chief Wahoo’s removal and the club is certain to hear more with the decision to change its name.

In July, just hours after Washington’s plans became known after being pressured by several sponsors, including FedEx which holds naming rights to the football’s team’s stadium, Cleveland owner Paul Dolan released a statement saying the team would review “the best path forward with our team name.”

In the months since, the team has consulted players, front office members, coaching staff, community leaders, share holders and Native American groups.

A few days after Dolan’s statement, Indians manager Terry Francona said it was time to “move forward” with the name change.

“I’ve been thinking about it and been thinking about it before we put out that statement,” said Francona, who has been with the club since 2013. “I know in the past, when I’ve been asked about, whether it’s our name or the Chief Wahoo, I think I would usually answer and say I know that we’re never trying to be disrespectful.

“And I still feel that way. But I don’t think that’s a good enough answer today. I think it’s time to move forward. It’s a very difficult subject. It’s also delicate.”

Cleveland Indians changing name after 105 years

The Sun Belt’s breakout season just keeps getting better.

Coastal Carolina cracked the top-10 in the latest&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll">Associated Press poll Sunday</a>, setting a new standard for a conference that before this season never had a team ranked better than 19.

The very top of the rankings held steady again, with No. 1 Alabama leading the way. No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Clemson and No. 5 Texas A&amp;M also stood their ground during an idle week.

The failings of Florida and Miami opened up some space in the top-10 and Coastal Carolina jumped in at No. 9, another milestone for the Chanticleers.

The Sun Belt championship game is next and for the first time in its three-year history will be a matchup of ranked teams. Louisiana-Lafayette is No. 17, with its only loss to Coastal and a victory over No. 8 Iowa State.

In fact, the ranked matchup is the first in Sun Belt history at any time.

When it comes to non-Power Five conferences putting two ranked team in their league championship games, it’s pretty rare.

Conference USA has held 15 championship games and just one has matched ranked teams: No. 24 Southern Mississippi beat No. 7 Houston in 2011.

The Mountain West has played seven title games and only the 2018 game in which No. 25 Fresno State beat No. 19 Boise State featured to ranked teams.

The Mid-American Conference has been playing a championship game since 1997 and only twice (2003 and 2012) have both participants been ranked.

The American Athletic Conference, which likes to consider itself more P5 then Group of Five, has had three matchups of ranked teams in its five championship games, and will have another when No. 20 Tulsa faces No. 6 Cincinnati on Saturday.

Reality Check salutes the Sun Belt. Sure, not playing as many Power Five teams as normal has limited the conference’s exposure to losses, but it’s best teams have proved worthy of all the attention and been one of the best stories of pandemic-altered season that at times has been hard to get excited about.

Reality check: Alabama’s offensive line is almost always among the best in the country. Why is this one especially good? Experience to go with the talent in senior tackle Alex Leatherwood and fifth-year seniors Deonte Brown at guard and center Landon Dickerson at center.

Reality check: Irish have the third-best third-down defense in the country, allowing opponents to convert 26.4 percent of the time. Against Clemson last month, 26.7%.

Reality check: The Big Ten did not bend over backward to put the Buckeyes in the playoff. It bent over backward to make sure its league championship game was not relegated to the conference undercard as Ohio State played a regular-season game at Iowa.

Reality check: Conventional wisdom after the Notre Dame loss was QB DJ Uiagalelei was so good that not having Trevor Lawrence wasn’t as much of a problem for the Tigers as the absence of three defensive starters. There is some truth to that, but make no mistake Lawrence changes everything.

Reality check: Looks pretty simple for the Aggies to make the playoff: Beat the Vols, root like heck for Clemson to take another L and make sure the committee doesn’t suddenly fall in love with the Big 12 champion or an undefeated Cincinnati or USC — all of which seems unlikely.

Reality check: Bearcats are not traditionally built for style points, but they have been blowing teams out much of the season and any slim chance of making the playoff is contingent on hammering the Golden Hurricane.

UNDATED (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs turned the ball over four times, fell into an early 10-point hole and watched Patrick Mahomes (mah-HOHMZ') taken down for a 30-yard sack. None of that stopped the Chiefs from clinching their fifth consecutive AFC West title.

Mahomes threw for 393 yards and two scores to help the 12-1 Chiefs earn their eighth consecutive victory, 33-27 at Miami. He shook off three interceptions and led Kansas City to its team-record 10th consecutive road win.

Travis Kelce had eight catches for 136 yards and a touchdown, and Mecole Hardman scored untouched on a 67-yard punt return. 

Tua Tagovailoa (TOO-uh tuhng-ah-vy-LOH'-ah) passed for 316 yards and two scores to Mike Gesicki, but he also threw his first career interception as the 8-5 Dolphins lost for just the second time in nine games.

— The Packers wrapped up the NFC North as Aaron Rodgers tossed three TD passes and ran for the go-ahead score in a 31-24 downing of the Lions. The two-time MVP completed his first eight passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns before finishing 26 of 33 for 290 yards. The 10-3 Packers knocked Matthew Stafford out of the game with a rib injury in the fourth quarter and went on to win their third straight game and second straight division championship.

— The Eagles stunned the Saints behind Jalen Hurts, who ran for 106 yards and threw for 167 in Philadelphia's 24-21 victory. Hurts was 17 of 30 with a TD in his first career start after replacing Carson Wentz. Miles Sanders had 115 yards rushing and a pair of scores as the Eagles ended a four-game losing streak while dropping the Saints to 10-3. 

— Russell Wilson threw for 206 yards and four touchdowns before sitting out the fourth quarter of the Seahawks' 40-3 laugher over the Jets. Wilson hit Freddie Swain, DK Metcalf, Will Dissly and David Moore, giving him a career-high 36 TD tosses this season. Seattle stayed tied with the Rams for the NFC lead and handed the Jets their team-record 13th consecutive loss.

— Josh Allen threw for two touchdowns, Taron Johnson returned an interception for a score and the Bills allowed just 47 yards rushing in dealing the Steelers their second straight loss since an 11-0 start, 26-15. Allen was 24 of 43 for 238 yards, including scoring tosses to Stefon Diggs and Gabriel Davis. Diggs had 10 receptions for 130 yards to help the 10-3 Bills inch closer to the AFC East title. Ben Roethlisberger had a tough night, completing just 21 of 37 passes for 187 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. 

— Derrick Henry ran for 215 yards and two touchdowns as the Titans dealt the Jaguars their 12th consecutive loss, 31-10. Henry topped 100 yards rushing for the 10th consecutive road game and became the first player in league history with four games of at least 200 yards and two TDs. Tennessee took control by scoring 17 points in less than four minutes spanning the second and third quarters.

— Tennessee and Indianapolis continue to share the AFC South lead after T.Y. Hilton caught two touchdown passes from Philip Rivers in the Colts' 44-27 shootout win against the Raiders. Jonathan Taylor rushed for a career-best 150 yards and two scores, including a 62-yard TD scamper. The Colts racked up 456 total yards while scoring on seven of their first eight drives in their fourth victory in five games. Las Vegas responded to the loss by firing defensive coordinator Paul Guenther.

— Tom Brady threw for 196 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Buccaneers to the first win in their last three home games, 26-14 versus the Vikings. Ronald Jones had a 1-yard TD run and Ryan Succop (SUK'-up) kicked field goals of 18 and 48 yards for the 8-5 Bucs. Tampa Bay sacked Kirk Cousins six times, the last producing a fumble that ended any chance of a rally. Dalvin Cook rushed for 102 yards on 22 carries for the 6-7 Vikings.

— Rookies Chase Young and Kamren Curl scored defensive touchdowns as Washington beat the 49ers, 23-15 to take over first place in the NFC East at 6-7, one game ahead of New York. Young returned a fumble 47 yards and Curl provided a 76-yard interception return in Washington's fourth win in a row. Washington's offense was limited after Alex Smith's right leg injury caused him to miss the second half.

— Haason (hah-SAHN') Reddick had a franchise-record five sacks and three forced fumbles for the Cardinals in a 26-7 win against the Giants. Kyler Murray threw for 244 yards and a touchdown as Arizona ended a three-game skid and moved to 7-6. Mike Nugent came off the practice squad and added four field goals for the Cardinals, who recorded eight sacks against Daniel Jones and Colt McCoy. Jones lost two fumbles and was sacked six times in his first game since missing last weekend's game with a hamstring injury.

— Mitchell Trubisky threw three touchdown passes and the Bears snapped a six-game losing streak with a 36-7 victory over the Texans. David Montgomery ran for an 80-yard touchdown on Chicago's first play from scrimmage, helping the 6-7 Bears stop their worst skid since the 2002 team dropped a team record-tying eight in a row. Allen Robinson caught nine passes for 123 yards, matching a season high and giving him 1,027 for the season. 

— The Broncos pulled out a 32-27 win at Carolina as Drew Lock threw for 280 yards and a career-high four touchdowns. Lock connected on touchdown throws of 49 and 37 yards to rookie KJ Hamler. Denver's Diontae Spencer returned a punt 83 yards for his first career score.

— Andy Dalton returned to Cincinnati and threw for two scores as the Cowboys ripped the Bengals, 30-7. Dalton was serviceable, going 16 for 23 for 185 yards as the 4-9 Cowboys stayed in contention in the weak NFC East. The Bengals fumbled the ball away on their first three drives, leading to 17 first-half points, including a fumble return for a touchdown. 

— Michael Badgley hit a 43-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Chargers past the Falcons, 20-17. Justin Herbert was 36 of 44 for 243 yards with two touchdowns and an interception to help Los Angeles move to 4-9. Austin Ekeler had 79 yars rushing and another 67 receiving as the Chargers stopped a two-game skid.

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Auburn is cutting ties with the last head football coach to lead the Tigers to a national championship game.

Gus Malzahn went 68-35 in eight seasons at Auburn and was 39-27 against SEC opponents. He led the Tigers to the 2013 conference title in his first season before losing to Florida State in the national championship game.

The Tigers weren't able to duplicate their first-year success under Malzahn. They are 6-4 this season, falling to struggling South Carolina and absorbing double-digit losses to Alabama, Georgia and Texas A&amp;M.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Illinois has fired coach Lovie Smith with a game left in its ninth consecutive losing season.

Smith became the school's first Black head football coach when he was hired by athletic director Josh Whitman in March 2016. The longtime NFL coach went 17-39 in five seasons with the Illini.

NEW YORK (AP) — Jared Porter is the 14th general manager in New York Mets history after the two sides hammered out a four-year contract. 

The 41-year-old Porter spent the past four seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks as senior vice president and assistant general manager. He also worked under Theo Epstein with the Red Sox and Cubs, winning three World Series in Boston's front office and another with Chicago before joining the Diamondbacks in 2017.
