(AP) — An Illinois man unexpectedly won the Quad Cities Marathon this weekend when the two Kenyan runners who had far outpaced him were disqualified after being diverted off the course by a race volunteer bicyclist. The Quad-City Times reports that Tyler Pence crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 15 minutes, 6 seconds to become the first U.S. runner since 2001 to win the race. The head track and cross-country coach at the University of Illinois-Springfield, Pence logged his fastest time ever with the win. It came after Elijah Mwangangi Saolo and Luke Kibet diverted from the course a little more than halfway to the finish line when the bicycle rider leading them mistakenly went straight when he should have turned.

Prescott, Cowboys beat Eagles in 1st home game since injury

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott lost the handle on the ball while being rushed in the end zone, spotted the Eagles an easy touchdown and then proceeded to dismantle them. 

Prescott threw for three touchdowns in his first home game since he suffered an ankle injury on the same field almost a year ago, Trevon Diggs returned an interception 59 yards for a score and Dallas dominated Philadelphia 41-21 on Monday night. Except for the fumble, Prescott was efficient, going 21 of 26 for 238 yards without an interception in the first NFC East game for both teams. 

Ezekiel Elliott ran for a season-high 95 yards and two touchdowns, and tight end Dalton Schultz had the first two-TD game of his career.

Prescott's first game at AT&amp;T Stadium since the season-ending compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle in Week 5 last year against the New York Giants was also the return to full capacity, with 93,267 inside and the retractable roof open at the $1.2 billion facility.

UNDATED (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars are sending cornerback CJ Henderson, the ninth overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft, to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for tight end Dan Arnold.

The deal also includes a swap of draft picks in 2022: Jacksonville gets Carolina's third-rounder, the Panthers get a fifth-rounder in return from the Jaguars.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Giants first baseman and home run leader Brandon Belt has a broken left thumb and his availability for the final week of the regular season and playoffs is unclear. The Giants said an X-ray showed the broken bone and Belt will "continue to meet with doctors over the next couple of days to develop a recovery plan and timetable for his return." 

The injury is a big blow for the NL West leaders, who begin a home series with the Diamondbacks on Tuesday night still seeking to close out their first division title since 2012. The Dodgers are two games back to start the season's last week. 

Porter agrees to 5-year deal with Nuggets, worth up to $207M

NEW YORK (AP) — Forward Michael Porter Jr. has agreed to a five-year maximum extension with the Denver Nuggets that could be worth up to $207 million. His agent, Mark Bartelstein, confirmed the deal to The Associated Press. 

Porter's agreement would be worth at least $173 million over five years and could rise to the supermax level of $207 million over that span if he reaches certain criteria this season. 

He's assured of making at least $29.8 million in 2022-23, a figure that would rise if he qualified for more by being voted onto an All-NBA team or winning the league's MVP award this season.

— Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH'-nihs an-teh-toh-KOON'-poh) says he feels fine as he prepares for the Milwaukee Bucks' title defense but will be careful with the left knee that he hyperextended during the championship run. Antetokounmpo missed the final two games of the Eastern Conference finals after hurting his knee but returned to earn MVP honors in the NBA Finals. He scored 50 points in a title-clinching Game 6 victory over the Phoenix Suns. 

- Unable to attend the Brooklyn Nets' media day, Kyrie Irving asked for privacy when pressed about his vaccination status and availability for home games. The All-Star guard spoke via Zoom through a monitor set up in the interview room at Barclays Center. If a player is not vaccinated, he would be forced to sit out the Nets' home games. Irving says his status will be cleared up at a later date.

— The Minnesota Timberwolves are familiar with change. They're undergoing plenty of it with training camp about to start. The biggest shakeup came last week when president of basketball operations Gersson Rosas was fired. Star center Karl-Anthony Towns says he had just joked the day before the dismissal about the offseason being strangely quiet until then. There's also an ownership transfer taking place from Glen Taylor to partners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez. In the meantime, Chiefs coordinators Steve Spagnuolo and Eric Bieniemy ran the Monday film reviews. The 63-year-old Reid is expected to coach Sunday when the Chiefs visit Philadelphia.

“Coach is doing well, currently resting &amp; in stable condition,” the statement posted on Twitter said.

The 63-year-old Reid was feeling ill but coached the duration of the game, a team spokesman said.

Assistant coach Dave Toub answered questions following a second straight fourth-quarter letdown.

“Coach just wasn't feeling well,"&nbsp;<a href="https://www.chiefs.com/video/dave-toub-it-s-not-about-effort-we-ve-just-got-to-clean-it-up-week-3-press-confe">Toub said afterward</a>. "He did talk to the team.”

In fact, quarterback Patrick Mahomes said his coach “seemed fine on the sideline as well” as the Chiefs (1-2) threw away an opportunity to beat the Chargers with&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/chargers-rally-beat-turnover-prone-chiefs-30-24-kc">four turnovers, several costly penalties and numerous missed assignments</a>.

Tucker set an NFL record with a 66-yard field goal, bouncing it past the crossbar as time expired to give the Ravens a 19-17 win over the Lions. 

After Baltimore wasted a 16-7 lead, Lamar Jackson threw a 36-yard pass to Sammy Watkins on fourth-and-19 to get the Ravens across midfield with 7 seconds left. Tucker topped the previous record of 64 yards set by Denver's Matt Prater (PRAY'-tur) in 2013.

— The Buccaneers' 10-game winning streak is over after Matthew Stafford passed for 343 yards and four touchdowns to send the Rams past Tampa Bay, 34-24. Stafford's best pass of the game came early in the third quarter, when he connected with a wide-open DeSean Jackson for a 75-yard score to extend Los Angeles' lead to 21-7. Tom Brady completed 41 of 55 passes for 432 yards and two scores.

— The Chiefs suffered their second straight loss as Justin Herbert's touchdown toss to Mike Williams with 32 seconds gave the Chargers a 30-24 win at Kansas City. The Chargers capitalized on four turnovers, including Patrick Mahomes' second interception in the closing minutes. Herbert finished with 281 yards passing and four touchdowns without an interception.

— The Bengals thumped the Steelers, 24-10 as Joe Burrow threw for 178 yards and three touchdowns. Burrow found rookie Ja'Marr Chase for 34-yard and 9-yard scores as the Bengals won at Heinz Field for the first time since 2015. Ben Roethlisberger (RAHTH'-lihs-bur-gur) completed 38 of 57 passes for 318 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for the Steelers. 

— Kirk Cousins threw three touchdown passes before halftime and guided three clock-draining field goal drives after that as the Vikings accelerated past the Seahawks, 30-17. Wilson was 19 of 34 and was picked off by Justin Simmons and Caden Sterns in the fourth quarter.

— Daniel Carlson's 22-yard field goal as time expired in overtime lifted the Raiders to a 31-28 victory over the Dolphins. Derek Carr found Bryan Edwards for 34 yards before Peyton Barber put together runs of 27 and 8 yards to set up the short field goal. Carr completed 26 of 43 pass attempts for 386 yards and two touchdowns.

— Josh Allen quieted his early season critics by throwing four touchdown passes and rushing for another in the Bills' 43-21 thrashing of Washington. James Conner capped two long drives with short TD runs, and Murphy delivered the game-changing play when he stepped in front of Jacob Hollister near the sideline and took it the other way for 29 yards. Kyler Murray completed 28 of 34 passes for 316 yards, with an interception. 

— The Falcons pulled out a 17-14 win over the Giants on Younghoe Koo's 40-yard field goal on the final play. Matt Ryan engineered two late drives and threw two touchdowns to rally the Falcons. It spoiled a day when the Giants retired the jersey of two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning. 

Chiefs coach Reid taken to hospital after loss

UNDATED (AP) — Kansas City coach Andy Reid was taken from Arrowhead Stadium to the hospital after the Chiefs' 30-24 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The Chiefs would only say that Reid was feeling "ill" after the NFL Network reports the coach was being hospitalized. 

Reid coached the duration of the game and addressed the team in the locker room. But he sent assistant coach Dave Toub to speak to reporters. That is a job that Reid customarily handles. 

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes says Reid "seemed fine" when he spoke to the team after the game.

UNDATED (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers are the latest major league team to wrap up a playoff berth.

The Brewers clinched their second NL Central title in four years, beating the Mets, 8-4 behind Willy Adames's (ah-DAH'-mehs-uhz) two-run homer and three RBIs. Freddy Peralta won for the first time since Aug. 10, ending a skid in which he went 0-2 in five starts. He allowed four runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Andrus breaks leg scoring winning run for A's, goes on IL

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Athletics shortstop Elvis Andrus is done for the season after breaking his left leg while scoring the winning run in Saturday's game against the Astros.

He holed a 3-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole that assured the Americans at least the 14 1/2 points they needed.

Scottie Scheffler showed why he was selected as one of six Ryder Cup rookies on the United States squad, defeating top-ranked Jon Rahm by a 4-3 margin.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Denny Hamlin has earned his first career victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway by holding off Chase Elliott and kicking off the second round of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs.

Hamlin got his first victory of the season in the playoff opener at Darlington three weeks ago in his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. A breakthrough victory in Vegas proves Hamlin has emerged as a serious contender for his first Cup Series championship after a 17-year career filled with near-misses.

Kyle Busch finished third on his hometown track, followed by Martin Truex Jr. and Ryan Blaney as the 12 remaining playoff drivers began the second round and the final seven races of the season. Hamlin, Busch and Truex put Joe Gibbs Racing in three of the top four spots.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Cristian Roldan and Will Bruin scored after backend giveaways and the Seattle Sounders defeated Sporting Kansas City 2-1 in a first-place showdown. 

With their league-best eighth road win and first at Kansas City in more than eight years the Sounders (14-5-6) moved over Sporting (13-6-6) in the Western Division. 

Johnny Russell scored for Kansas City but couldn't convert another over the final 30 minutes.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Justin Herbert’s touchdown toss to Mike Williams with 32 seconds to go lifted the Los Angeles Chargers to a 30-24 victory over the Chiefs. 

The Chargers capitalized on four Kansas City turnovers, including Patrick Mahomes’ second interception in the closing minutes.  Herbert finished with 281 yards passing and four touchdowns without an interception, outdueling Mahomes in a matchup of two of the game's best young quarterbacks. 

Mahomes finished with 260 yards and three touchdown passes along with his two interceptions. Kansas City also lost two fumbles.

DETROIT (AP) — Kris Bubic kept up his mastery of the Tigers, pitching seven shutout innings and leading the Kansas City Royals over Detroit 2-1. Bubic gave up only two hits and a walk while striking out six. 

He allowed just three earned runs over 23 innings in four outings against Detroit this season. Scott Barlow survived a shaky ninth for his 16th save. Whit Merrifield had three hits and scored for Kansas City. 

Andrew Benintendi contributed two hits and an RBI. Tigers starter Wily Peralta carried a 16-inning scoreless streak into the game. The Royals halted it in the first inning on Benintendi’s RBI single.

Royals win over Detroit Sunday

Nickerson High volleyball participated in the Newton Invitational on Saturday.

The Panthers received the 5 seed out of pool play, which put them at the top of the silver bracket.

They held that position through tournament play, winning over Wichita Heights and Salina South to finish 5th.

DURHAM, N.C.- Gunnar Holmberg tied a school record with four rushing touchdowns and threw for a fifth as Duke overcame Kansas for a 52-33 victory Saturday, its third straight win.

The Blue Devils (3-1) struck for 21 points during a six-minute span of the third quarter, taking the lead on the way to eclipsing their 2020 win total.

Holmberg's scoring runs came from 4, 1, 3 and 13 yards. He threw for 328 yards, completing 22 of 29 passes.

Holmberg became the eighth Duke player with four rushing touchdowns in a game and the first since quarterback Brandon Connette ran for four in 2013.
