Hutchinson Community College redshirt freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/franklin_aaron_5xfv">Aaron Franklin</a>&nbsp;was named the Jayhawk Conference Freshman of the Year on Thursday as well as being named to the first-team All-Jayhawk Conference and All-Region VI teams.

Franklin, a 6-foot-5 freshman from Kansas City, Missouri, is the first Blue Dragon to be named Freshman of the Year since Josh Baker in 2020. His inclusion on the first team means the Blue Dragons have had a first-team All-KJCCC selection for the eighth-straight season.

Franklin is the second-straight Blue Dragon to lead the Jayhawk Conference in scoring. Last season Angelo Stuart was the KJCCC's leading scorer.

Franklin led the Blue Dragons and the KJCCC in scoring at 22.0 points per game. That mark ranked 10th in the NJCAA in 2022-23.

Franklin became just the 12th Blue Dragon in program history to surpass the 700-point mark of the season with 703 points. His 80 3-point field goals were the third most in program single-game history.

Franklin shot 49.3 percent overall, hitting 32.8 percent from 3-point range and 62.8 percent from the free-throw line. Franklin was the Blue Dragons' leading rebounder and sixth-leading rebounder in the KJCCC with 8.2 boards per game.

Franklin posted 10 double-doubles this season and scored in double figures in all 32 games played. Franklin had 19 games of 20 or more points and five games with 30 or more points, including a career-high 38 points against Pratt on January 25.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Bill Self’s status for coaching Kansas in the NCAA Tournament is uncertain as he recovers from a heart procedure. Assistant coach Norm Roberts said the Jayhawks remain hopeful he’ll be on the bench for their opener against Howard on Thursday. Kansas’ Hall of Fame coach was discharged from a Kansas City-area hospital Sunday after having a procedure to treat blocked arteries in his heart. Self attended practice at Wells Fargo Arena on Wednesday morning but did not participate in his team’s media availability. Roberts said Self is day-to-day.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — TCU forward Chuck O'Bannon says the team has been motivated all season after coming so close to upsetting a No. 1 seed and getting to the Sweet 16 in last year's NCAA Tournament. The Horned Frogs are now making consecutive March Madness appearances for the first time in 70 years. They play Friday night in Denver against a First Four winner. TCU last year beat Seton Hall to get its first NCAA Tournament win since current coach Jamie Dixon was a guard playing for the 1987 team. The Frogs then overcame a nine-point deficit in the final eight minutes of regulation against Arizona before falling 85-80 in overtime.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) — Led by Tyreek Smith's 13 points, the Oklahoma State Cowboys defeated the Youngstown State Penguins 69-64 in the NIT.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Texas Longhorns have team chemistry as strong as any in this NCAA Tournament. The bonds they formed over the summer were tested when former coach Chris Beard was fired in December. Now the Longhorns have the No. 2 seed in the Midwest Region with the talent and depth to reach the Final Four for the first time since 2003. They face Colgate in the first round on Thursday. The other game in Des Moines, Iowa, is Texas A&amp;M against Penn State. Midwest No. 1 seed Houston plays Northern Kentucky in Birmingham, Alabama. Iowa faces Auburn in the other game.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Max Rice remembers the excitement he saw watching Northwestern win its first NCAA Tournament game six years ago. Now, Rice wants to do the same for his Boise State team that is looking for its first tournament win when the 10th-seeded Broncos take on the seventh-seeded Wildcats. In a West Region filled with powerhouses like defending champion Kansas, UCLA, Connecticut and Gonzaga, the Wildcats and Broncos are clearly lacking. Northwestern has made it to this stage for just the second time, advancing to the second round in 2017. Boise State is 0-8 all-time in the tournament.

(AP) — A season removed from reaching the Final Four for a 13th time under Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski, Duke not only is in the NCAA Tournament again, but appears to be peaking at the right time with first-year coach Jon Scheyer at the helm. The fifth-seeded Blue Devils face No. 12 seed Oral Roberts in the opening round of the East Regional on Thursday night in Orlando, Florida, eager to build on a rich March Madness legacy Krzyzewski fashioned over nearly four decades. In Thursday’s only other East Regional matchup, fourth-seeded Tennessee faces Louisiana-Lafayette, also in Orlando.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala, (AP) — Alabama has the No. 1 overall NCAA Tournament seed, one of the best players in college basketball and likely a couple of games in its own backyard. For a Crimson Tide team that’s been an easy target for opposing fans over the past two months, playing less than an hour from campus is no small matter. It means most of the taunts will be replaced by cheers in Birmingham, Alabama, especially for All-America freshman Brandon Miller. It will be an overwhelmingly crimson and white crowd at Thursday’s South Region game against Texas A&amp;M-Corpus Christi.

MIAMI (AP) — New York Mets fans began the year dreaming about a World Series closed out by Edwin Díaz. For now, they’re facing a nightmare scenario. In a startling scene, Díaz was taken off the field in a wheelchair after injuring his right knee celebrating Puerto Rico’s victory over the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic on Wednesday night. There was no immediate word on how severely Díaz was hurt. The Mets said he will undergo more tests Thursday. But the injury was exactly what big league teams and their fans fear the most when their high-priced stars go play for their countries. Díaz was swarmed by teammates after pitching a perfect ninth inning in a 5-2 win. The group was jumping together when Díaz collapsed to the ground.

MIAMI (AP) — The NBA has suspended Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant eight games without pay after determining that his holding a firearm at a club in suburban Denver earlier this month was “conduct detrimental to the league.” Morant will miss his sixth game when the Grizzlies play in Miami on Wednesday night. He will miss the next two games and be eligible to return on Monday when Memphis plays Dallas. The games he already missed will count toward the suspension. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver met with Morant in New York before announcing the league’s decision. He called Morant's conduct “irresponsible, reckless and potentially very dangerous.”

UNDATED (AP) — JIm Nantz and CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus agreed two years ago that this would be Nantz’s final tournament as the top announcer. Nantz started calling early-round games for CBS in 1986 and was the Final Four studio host for five years before taking over play-by-play duties from Brett Musburger in 1991. When Nantz signs off on April 3, he will have called 354 NCAA Tournament games, including 64 national semifinals and 32 championship contests. Nantz decided to step back from doing the tournament to devote more time to family.

The tournament generates hundreds of millions in revenue annually for the NCAA and its 1,100 member schools. Making significant changes to the tournament in the near term will be difficult, if not impossible. There are logistical, financial and even political obstacles. A major factor is the role of broadcast partners. The current $8.8 billion contract with CBS and Warner Bros. Discovery runs through 2032.

Linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson also faces charges of racing and reckless drive in a separate incident. Quarterback Stetson Bennett was arrested for public intoxication.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Ryan Redington has won the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, which his grandfather helped co-found. Redington’s dog team pulled him down Nome’s main street shortly after noon on Tuesday, sliding him under the iconic burled arch finish line. The 40-year-old Redington will pocket about $50,000 for the win. Redington’s grandfather, Joe Redington Sr., helped start the Iditarod, which had its first race in 1973. Ryan Redington, who is Inupiat, becomes the sixth Alaska Native musher to win the world’s most famous sled dog race. This is first Iditarod victory, but he won the Junior Iditarod in both 1999 and 2000.

Kansas will compete in the postseason for the second-straight season after reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2022. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jawaan Taylor has agreed to an $80 million, four-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs to replace Orlando Brown Jr. as the blindside protector for Patrick Mahomes, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Monday because the contract cannot become official until Wednesday, when the NFL's new year officially starts and free agents can begin signing contracts.

The 25-year-old Taylor started all 66 games he's played in since entering the league as a second-round pick of the Jaguars in the 2019 draft. While he primarily held down the right side of the line in Jacksonville, the expectation is that — much as Brown did when he arrived from Baltimore — Taylor will switch to the left side in Kansas City.

The Chiefs used the franchise tag on Brown a year ago, when they could not agree to a long-term deal with his new representative. He wound up playing the season for $16.7 million under terms of the tag, helping the Chiefs beat the Eagles in the Super Bowl, and the sides again worked on a long-term deal.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach expressed some optimism in a contract at the NFL scouting combine.

Yet it quickly became evident that the sides were still far from a middle ground, and the price tag to put Brown on the franchise tag for a second year would have cost about $20 million. So the Chiefs, who are expected to lose right tackle Andrew Wylie in free agency, opted to move quickly on Taylor to fill the left tackle spot.

He gave up a league-leading 40 sacks from 2019 to 2021, but he experienced a breakout year protecting Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville last season. He allowed only six sacks and had one of the league's lowest pressure rates among tackles.

The Chiefs still would still have a hole at right tackle, but Lucas Niang could fill that role after dealing with a litany of injuries, and Veach has been successful in finding quailty offensive linemen in the NFL draft.

That includes center Creed Humphy and right guard Trey Smith, both of them draft picks two years ago, who along with left guard Joe Thuney have formed one of the most durable and successful interior lines in the league.

The Chiefs could be busy in free agency as they retool for a Super Bowl defense.

UNDATED (AP) — Dick Fosbury, the lanky leaper who completely revamped the technical discipline of high jump and won an Olympic gold medal with his “Fosbury Flop,” has died at age 76. Fosbury died Sunday after a recurrence with lymphoma, according to publicist Ray Schulte. Before Fosbury, some high jumpers cleared their height by running parallel to bar, then leaping over with a scissors kick, with their faces pointed downward. At the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, Fosbury took off at an angle, leaped backward and bent himself into a “J” shape to catapult his 6-foot-4 frame over the bar. By the next Olympics, 28 of the 40 jumpers were using Fosbury’s technique. Today, it is by far the most-used technique for elite high jumpers across the globe.

NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. Soccer Federation says Gregg Berhalter remains a candidate to stay on as men’s national team coach after a report by a law firm concluded he did not improperly withhold information about a 1992 domestic violence allegation involving the woman who later became his wife. The report also concluded that Berhalter’s conduct “likely constituted the misdemeanor crime of assault on a female” but that it was an isolated event. He can't be prosecuted because of the two-year statute of limitations for misdemeanors. The law firm Alston and Bird was retained after the Reyna family reported the 30-year-old incident to the USSF.

NEW YORK (AP) — Joe Pepitone, an All-Star and Gold Glove first baseman on the 1960s New York Yankees who gained renown for his flamboyant personality, hairpieces and penchant for nightlife, has died at age 82. Born in Brooklyn, Pepitone helped the Yankees to their second straight World Series title, a team led by Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris and Elston Howard. Pepitone gained attention for his off-the-field conduct. In a time when most players were staid and conformist, Pepitone was thought to be the first to bring a hair dryer into the clubhouse.

NEW YORK, New York-The blockbuster trade that would send future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets is reportedly a “done” deal, according to Trey Wingo.

Wingo&nbsp;<a href="https://packerswire.usatoday.com/2023/03/07/report-packers-qb-aaron-rodgers-talks-with-jets-is-open-to-playing-in-new-york/">first reported</a>&nbsp;the conversations taking place between Rodgers and the Jets last week.

Appearing live on NFL Network following the report, insider Ian Rapoport said a deal is “not done” and “nothing has happened,” refuting Wingo’s report. Colleague Mike Garafolo’s reporting echoed Rapoport’s during the same NFL Network segment.

A completed trade between the Jets and Packers ending Rodgers’ 18-year run in Green Bay would mirror the trade that once ended Brett Favre’s career with the franchise in 2008.

It’s unclear what compensation would be coming to the Packers or how the two teams adjusted Rodgers’ contract to make it all work.

A trade of Rodgers would clear the path for Jordan Love to be the Packers’ new starting quarterback in 2023.

Self missed the Big 12 Tournament after undergoing a heart procedure, but the school announced Sunday&nbsp;he will return to lead the third-ranked Jayhawks against Howard in Des Moines, Iowa, on Thursday.

Kansas (27-7) won its first two games at the Big 12 Tournament without Self before losing 76-56 to NO. 7 Texas&nbsp;in the title game.

The Jayhawks appeared as though they would slip to a No. 2 seed when top-ranked Houston got the top spot in the Midwest, but the NCAA selection committee still made them the No. 1 in a West Region that ends in Las Vegas on March 23-25.

Kansas faces a difficult road in its bid to become college basketball's first repeat champion since Florida in 2006-07.

The stacked West Region includes No. 2 UCLA, No. 9 Gonzaga, No. 11 UConn, No. 16 Saint Mary's and No. 22 TCU.

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — William Byron won his second straight NASCAR Cup Series race, taking advantage of a pair of late cautions to give Hendrick Motorsports a victory in overtime at Phoenix Raceway.
