WICHITA, Kan. --&nbsp;Junior infielder&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/brock-rodden/7450">Brock Rodden</a>&nbsp;has been named a Third Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball, the publication announced Thursday. Rodden is the first Wichita State player to be selected as an All-American since Alec Bohm in 2018. Rodden authored a spectacular 2023 season as Wichita State's everyday second baseman, slashing .371/.474/.701 to lead the conference in both on-base percentage and slugging percentage. The switch-hitter hammered 18 doubles, two triples and 17 home runs, good for 155 total bases that tied for the top mark in the AAC. His .371 batting average, 62 runs scored and 64 RBI all finished second on the circuit. Rodden started all 55 games for the Shockers, leading the team with 26 multi-hit games and tying for the team lead with 18 multi-RBI games. Rodden was recognized as the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year and was a unanimous First Team All-Conference selection. The native of Oktaha, Oklahoma produced a pair of two-homer games (UMass on 3/25, Kansas State on 4/18) and compiled Wichita State's longest hitting streak of the season at 18 games. He also added 12 stolen bases in 15 attempts in addition to a keen batting eye that produced 39 walks to only 26 strikeouts. Rodden took his game to another level down the stretch. Over the final three weeks of the season, Rodden hit .556 (20-for-36) with four doubles and four home runs, notching three three-hit games and a career-best four hits against South Florida on May 13. Rodden is expected to be a high pick in July's MLB Draft. He returned to Wichita State in 2023 after he was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 10th round of the 2022 MLB Draft, one of just three players in the top 10 rounds who did not sign. PARIS (AP) — The group that runs the French Open tennis tournament has hired an artificial intelligence company to monitor players' social media accounts in a bid to try to protect athletes from cyberbullying. Several players say they receive death threats via apps after they lose matches. Some say the vitriol is also directed at their family members. Peyton Stearns, NCAA champ for Texas, beats Jelena Ostapenko, 2017 champ at French Open

PARIS (AP) — Peyton Stearns is playing in the French Open for the first time and now the 21-year-old American is into the third round after knocking off 2017 champion Jelena Ostapenko. A 2022 NCAA champion for the University of Texas, Stearns used her big forehand to put together the 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 victory on Wednesday. That leaves just one past Roland Garros champion in the women's field. The 17th-seeded Ostapenko's exit is also part of a series of early losses by seeded women that also included No. 5 Caroline Garcia's departure on Wednesday. More than half of the seeds already are out of the bracket. That's in addition to the No. 2 man, Daniil Medvedev.

Pistons reach agreement to hire former Suns coach Monty Williams, AP sources say

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Pistons have reached an agreement to hire former Phoenix Suns coach Monty Williams, according to two people familiar with the situation. One of the people told The Associated Press on Wednesday night that Williams agreed to a six-year contract. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not been announced. Phoenix fired Williams two-plus weeks ago, two years after reaching the NBA Finals and a year after he won the league's coach of the year honors.

Aaron Rodgers' tweaked calf is 'fine'; Jets hope QB will fully practice Friday

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Aaron Rodgers could be back fully practicing with the New York Jets on Friday after straining a calf last week. He was injured while participating in conditioning drills last Tuesday. Coach Robert Saleh said Wednesday that Rodgers' calf is fine and the quarterback is rehabilitating the injury. Florida beats Georgia Tech 3-1 to win 5th NCAA men's golf championship

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Individual NCAA champion Fred Biondi beat Hiroshi Tai 1 up with a par on the 18th hole and Florida won its fifth men's national golf title with a 3-1 victory over Georgia Tech on Wednesday. Florida's Yuxin Lin won the opener 4 and 3 over Christo Lamprecht, but the remaining matches went down to the wire in the strongest wind of the week at Grayhawk Golf Club. John DuBois closed out Connor Howe 1 up to put Florida up 2-0. Georgia Tech's Bartley Forrester then beat Matthew Kress on the second extra hole after blowing a 2-up lead with two holes left. Biondi became the first player to win individual and team championships in the same season since Oregon's Aaron Wise in 2016.

WICHITA, Kan. – Yunior Severino hammered a third inning grand-slam and the Wichita Wind Surge evened up the series with a 7-2 win.

The Wind Surge offense erupted with the six run third inning. The Surge sent ten batters to the plate with Yoyner Fajardo driving in two with an RBI double. Severino cleared the bases with his team leading twelfth home run of the season and the Surge led 6-0.

Carlos Luna dealt five and two third innings allowed two runs on four hits and earned his first win of the season. Kyle Hurt took the loss allowing six runs.

The Wind Surge bullpen dealt three and a third innings of scoreless relief. The Wind Surge snapped a two game losing streak and ended Tulsa’s seven game win streak.

🏀 K-State 2023-24 season tickets on sale June 5

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;<a></a>Kickoff times and television selections for four of K-State’s first five football games of 2023 have been announced as the Big 12 Conference and its television partners have made selections for the first three weeks of the season and special weeknight contests.

The Wildcats will open their Big 12-defending season on Saturday, September 2 against SEMO at 6 p.m., in a game shown on Big 12 Now on ESPN+, and they stay at Bill Snyder Family Stadium the next Saturday, September 9, with an 11 a.m., tilt against Sun Belt Champion Troy that will be aired on FS1.

K-State hits the road for the first time in 2023 with an 11 a.m., contest at Missouri that will be broadcast by SEC Network. It is the Wildcats’ first trip to Columbia, Missouri, since 2010 when the Tigers were members of the Big 12.

Kansas State will face Oklahoma State in a special Friday-night matchup on October 6 that will kick at 6:30 p.m., and be shown on ESPN.

🏈 K-State, Big 12 announce four game times

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;— The Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball team will get a chance to bond before the season starts when it will play three exhibition games in Puerto Rico from August 1-8.

The Jayhawks will play in the capital city of San Juan and will play an exhibition game on August 3, 5 and 7. Anthony Walton, proprietor of Houston-based event organizer Walton Sports &amp; Entertainment confirmed with the Lawrence Journal-World on Wednesday.

The opponents for KU have not yet been determined, but Walton said the Jayhawks will get the best Puerto Rico has to offer.

"So we're just picking and choosing which ones would be the best competition for Kansas," Walton said.

Kansas will have four incoming transfers and four freshman on the 2023-24 roster. The guys are set to report to Lawrence in July, before the team embarks on it's trip at the end of the month.

The award will be presented by the College Baseball Foundation later this year. Tolle was named First Team All-American Athletic Conference utility player after a breakout season as Wichita State's Saturday starter and designated hitter. The 6'6 lefty went 9-3 with a 4.62 ERA over 15 appearances including 14 starts. Tolle led the conference in wins and innings pitched, finishing the season with 97 strikeouts in 85.2 innings. He held opponents to a .245 batting average, racking up eight quality starts and four starts with 10 or more strikeouts.&nbsp; Offensively, Tolle hit .311 with 13 home runs and 50 RBI, including homers in the midweek against Kansas State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. He produced 20 multi-hit games and 18&nbsp;multi-RBI games this season, highlighted by a five-hit, six-RBI day against Oakland on March 4. The Harlem, New York native transferred to K-State after going from Monroe Community College to Chipola (Fla.) College. He announced in an interview with Stadium.

The Stanley Cup Final between Vegas and Florida will end with a first-time NHL champion

Stanley isn't just getting a tan. He's getting a new home. The Stanley Cup Final between the Vegas Golden Knights and Florida Panthers pits teams against each other who have never won the NHL championship. It's the first time that has happened since 2018 when Vegas made it in its inaugural season before losing to Washington. Nuggets run to the NBA Finals stirs up memories of wonderful wackiness in the ABA

DENVER (AP) — The Denver Nuggets are the last of the four ABA teams that merged with the NBA to reach the Finals. It's stirring up fond memories of the defunct league. Dan Issel, David Thompson and Bobby Jones helped guide the Nuggets to the 1976 ABA Finals. It was the last one before the league was absorbed by the NBA. But many of the ABA concepts still impact the game today. Up-tempo play. The 3-point shot. The first slam-dunk contest, hosted by Denver and included a concert. Browns' Watson makes pitch for DeAndre Hopkins to reunite with him in Cleveland

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (AP) — Standing a few feet from a golf green, Deshaun Watson made a pitch for DeAndre Hopkins to join him in Cleveland. The Browns quarterback said that he has spoken to Hopkins, his close friend and former Houston teammate, and encouraged the three-time All-Pro wide receiver to consider a reunion. Hopkins is a free agent after the Arizona Cardinals released him last week. Watson said he has been in contact with Hopkins, his teammate for three seasons. SEC coaches' opinions on schedule debate range from overrated to undecided to ambivalence

DESTIN, Fla. (AP) — The Southeastern Conference began four days of meetings on the Florida Gulf Coast for a second straight year, debating what to do with its football schedule. Texas and Oklahoma join the conference next year to make it a 16-team league that is abandoning divisions. The options are sticking with an eight-game slate, but shifting to one annual rivalry game instead of the current two, or going to nine games with three annual rivals. Georgia coach Kirby Smart called the great schedule debate the "most overrated conversation in the world." And there is still no guarantee a decision will be made this week.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Seth Brown scored on a fielding error by Atlanta third baseman Austin Riley in the ninth inning, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Braves 2-1 on Tuesday night, recording consecutive victories for the second time this season. Braves reliever Raisel Iglesias (1-2) walked three of the first four Oakland batters in the ninth. Jonah Bride hit a sharp grounder that Riley bobbled. Blue Jays' Bass apologizes for sharing anti-LGBTQ+ social media post

TORONTO (AP) — Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Anthony Bass apologized for expressing support on social media for anti-LGBTQ+ boycotts of Target and Bud Light. Bass shared a post on his Instagram stories Monday urging others to spurn the American companies over support for they showed for the LGBTQ+ community. Both companies are dealing with fallout from those campaigns, which have included hostile and homophobic criticism and calls from LGBTQ+ activists not to cave to anti-LGBTQ+ groups. The right-handed reliever made a brief statement on the field but did not take questions before the Blue Jays hosted Milwaukee.

WICHITA, Kan. – The Tulsa Drillers scored nine unanswered runs and defeated Wichita 9-8 in the series opener.

The Wind Surge stormed out to a great start scoring four first inning runs. Patrick Winkle started the scoring with a two run triple and Alex Isola followed with a two run home run. Wichita added runs in second and the fourth to extend the lead to 6-0.

Blayne Enlow dominated early pitching four innings and allowed a hit and punched out nine hitters. The Drillers offense broke out in the fifth inning and knocked Enlow out after retiring one hitter. ⚾ Tulsa Drillers rally to defeat Wichita Wind Surge

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Miles Mikolas pitched eight shutout innings, Nolan Arenado hit an RBI double and Nolan Gorman drove in a run with a sacrifice fly as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Kansas City Royals 2-1 on Tuesday night to split the two-game set between the I-70 rivals.

Mikolas (4-1) matched a career high with 10 strikeouts and allowed three hits in working a season-high eight innings. The strikeout total matched the 34-year-old right-hander's effort against Milwaukee in 2019.

“It's one of the best feelings in sports, to show up when your team needs you,” Mikolas said. “Every game, there's someone who you kind of got to lean on. If you get to be that guy, it makes you feel good.”

Mikolas threw 102 pitches. He said he did not lobby to go out for the ninth inning.

“I got a little blister on my finger from a slider I threw there near the end,” Mikolas said. “It's not going to be a problem, but you don't want to force those things.”

St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol was impressed with Mikolas' showing.

“We needed him to go. It was a phenominal start,” Marmol said. “We knew we needed this game.”

The Cardinals needed a defensive gem in the fourth inning to keep the game scoreless. With two outs and MJ Melendez on second, Michael Massey singled to right. Brendan Donovan threw a strike to the plate and Willson Contreras applied the tag to Melendez.

“Two outs, Massey squared that ball up and it took a good one hop to the right fielder,” Kansas City manager Matt Quataro said. “We got to take a chance to score there every time. They made a good throw and a good tag. MJ did a good job to try and evade it. The way the game was going, you could tell it wasn't going to be a high-scoring game."

Gionvanny Gallegos replaced Mikolas in the ninth and gave up a double and single to start the inning. Vinnie Pasquantino scored on a fielder's choice by Bobby Witt Jr., cutting the deficit to a run. Gallegos went on to retire the next two hitters and record his seventh save.

The Cardinals got a run in the sixth with two outs against Carlos Hernández (0-2). Paul Goldschmidt reached first on an infield single. Arenado hit a run-scoring double to left-center. Arenado has a team-high 18 RBIs in interleague play this season.

“We didn't score many runs, but Mikolas didn't give up any so it's a good win,” Goldschmidt said.

St. Louis extended its lead to 2-0 in the eighth Gorman's sac fly off Aroldis Chapman, scoring Tommy Edman.

Zack Greinke started for the Royals but didn't figure in the decision. The 39-year-old right-hander pitched five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk with six strikeouts. He ranks first in starts (526) and innings pitched (3,309 1/3), second in wins (224) and third in strikeouts (2,929) among active pitchers.

“He's a really talented guy,” Mikolas said. “Anytime you go up against a guy like that, you want to do good. It makes you want to impress. I watched him on TV.”

After off days Wednesday and Thursday, the Cardinals return Friday, continuing a stretch of 13 of 15 games on the road between May 22-June 7.

Tommy Edman made his first career start and third overall appearance in center field in the regular season, previously appearing as a defensive replacement on July 12, 2019 verus Arizona (one inning) and May 21, 2022 at Pittsburgh (five innings). The 28-year-old Edman also appeared in center in Game 4 of the NLCS at Washington (one inning). This season, the former Gold Glove second baseman has appeared at shortstop (27 games), second base (21 games), and right field (seven games).

With a win, the Cardinals (15-13) achieved a winning month of May for the 16th time since 2000.

“We were in a deep, dark place earlier in the month, a team meeting kind of place,” Mikolas said. “We had to assess things. We've definitely turned it around. I think our best ball is still to come.”

Royals: OF Kyle Isbel (left hamstring strain) still undergoing a rehab process after getting hurt running out a bunt earlier this month against Baltimore. He is doing more baseball activity, but a rehab assignment is not in the immediate future.

Cardinals: OF Lars Nootbar (back spasms) is getting treatment and listed as day to day. Lindstrom, who hails from Halmstad, Sweden, is transferring to K-State after completing a successful one-year stint at Hutchinson Community College. "We feel like we have made a great addition with Alex," Robbins said. "We saw him play earlier this spring and were really impressed with his ballstriking and his calm and confident demeanor on the course. He came over to the U.S. last fall and quickly established himself as one of the best players in the country at the junior college level. He is passionate about the game and is an extremely hard worker. We are really looking forward to getting him here and working with him this fall." Lindstrom won the 2023 NJCAA Division I Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman Award and was a First Team PING All-American after collecting five top-10 finishes, including victories in consecutive KJCCC events that culminated with a conference championship. McKinney was a second team selection in 2022. The Norborne, Mo., native is leading the country in hits (103) and batting average (.520) for the second straight season, and is on track to become the first player in NCAA DI history to repeat as both batting average and hit champion in back-to-back seasons. She added 13 doubles, 7 triples, 5 home runs, 33 RBI and 76 runs scored to her impressive senior campaign. Her 7 triples and 76 runs scored all rank in the Top 10 nationally. McKinney is the career and single season record holder at Wichita State in batting average, hits, runs and on base percentage. A two-time American Athletic Conference Player of the Year and four-time First Team All-Conference selection, McKinney adds to a robust resume.&nbsp;McKinney&nbsp;finished her career with 378 career hits, fifth most in NCAA history. D1 Softball tabs McKinney first team All-America

ARLINGTON, Texas – TCU defeated Oklahoma State, 12-5, to win the Horned Frogs’ fourth Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball title in nine years. The Horned Frogs’ offense stayed hot as they scored the most runs (48) in the Big 12 Championship by a team since 2013.

TCU improved to 4-1 in the Big 12 Championship final (2014, 2016, 2021, 2023).

The attendance of 14,673 for the final is a Big 12 Championship record while the total attendance of 132,291 throughout the Championship was the second-highest in the league’s history.

TCU got on the board in the second inning after an RBI infield single by Anthony Silva that scored Tre Richardson. Luke Boyers followed up with a three-run home run to right center, which gave the Horned Frogs a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the third inning, Richardson hit a bases-clearing double that scored Brayden Taylor and Karson Bowen, but Cole Fontenelle was thrown out at home by Oklahoma State third baseman Tyler Wulfert. The inning continued with an RBI single from Austin Davis which scored Kurtis Byrne.

Oklahoma State responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own. A bases-loaded walk by Nolan Schubart and an RBI fielder’s choice by Wulfert cut the lead down to 8-2 after three innings.

TCU tallied a run in the top of the fifth inning from an RBI groundout by Davis, making it 9-2.

Both teams remained scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when Davis singled for the Horned Frogs, scoring Byrne. Oklahoma State tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning off a three-run home run by Schubart to make it a 10-5 game.

The Horned Frogs answered in the next half inning with Taylor’s two-run home run, to put TCU up 12-5 the rest of the game.

Taylor was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Championship.

Chase Hoover pitched the first two innings for TCU, giving up two hits, two runs, three walks and threw four strikeouts. He was relieved by Luke Savage (W, 3-3) who pitched four innings giving up two hits, no runs and one walk on two strikeouts. Garrett Wright closed out the game by striking out the side for the Horned Frogs.

Ben Abram started the game for the Cowboys (L, 8-3) going 2.0 innings, giving up four hits, four runs, no walks and adding three strikeouts.

During the game it was announced that Oklahoma State will host a regional in Stillwater June 2-5. Full selections for the 2023 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship will be revealed Monday, May 29 at 11 a.m. CT on ESPN2. TCU recieves the Big 12's automatic bid to the field.

 ST. LOUIS (AP) — Josh Staumont and Mike Mayers came within six outs of the first combined perfect game in major league history before Nolan Arenado lined a leadoff single in the eighth inning of the Kansas City Royals' 7-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday.

“You're definitely aware of it,” Mayers said of a perfect game. “I tried to keep it business as usual. The goal was to throw up as many zeroes as you possibly can and that's the mindset I stayed in.”

Staumont,, a 29-year-old right-hander, served as the opener in a planned bullpen game for the Royals. He made his first major league start in his 167th appearance and struck out two in a 1-2-3 inning, throwing 14 pitches.

“That was one of the most exciting moments for me of the year,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “For him to set the tone like that was unbelievable.”

Mayers, a 31-year-old left-hander who pitched for the Cardinals from 2016-19, made his third appearance for the Royals this season after eight starts at Triple-A Omaha. He retired 18 consecutive batters before Arenado lined a 1-0 slider to left on his 72nd pitch.

“He did a great job today,” Arenado said. “We just couldn't get anything going.”

Willson Contreras followed with a single to center that stopped an 0 for 29 slide.

“I can't say what I was thinking there,” Mayers said with a chuckle. “I made two very bad pitches in that inning and they're good hitters. They made me pay for them.”

Taylor Clarke relieved and retired Brendan Donovan, Paul DeJong and Alex Burleson in order. Amir Garrett pitched a perfect ninth to finish a two-hitter and Kansas City's second shutout this year.

St. Louis was shut out for the sixth time and has scored 13 runs in its last six games.

“It was just hard to get anything going offensively,” St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol said. “Today was a tough one.”

There have been 23 perfect games, the last by Seattle’s Félix Hernández against Tampa Bay on Aug. 15, 2012. All perfect games have been complete games.

Kansas City had not shut out the Cardinals since May 22, 2015, and had not blanked them in St. Louis since June 2, 2014.

In the opener of a two-game series, the Royals tied their season high with 16 hits and stranded 14 runners, one shy of their high.

Nicky Lopez matched his career high with four hits, and Nick Pratto and Vinnie Pasquantino had three each. Mike Massey hit a two-run homer and Bobby Witt Jr. added a solo homer.

Adam Wainwright (2-1) allowed three runs and nine hits in five innings for the Cardinals, playing their 18th game in a stretch of 19 days in a row. The Cardinals and the Royals have back-to-back days off Wednesday and Thursday.

“The stuff's OK. The location's OK,” Wainwright said. “Nothing great. We're in one of those funks right now. Baseball is a crazy game like that. I'm trying to take a big picture view. The little moments, I'm not winning right now."

Pasquantino hit an RBI double in the third.

“I'm feeling solid and ready to go tomorrow,” Pasquantino said. “It was kind of a weird game because it was tougher to score runs early and then we were able to break it opener later.”

MJ Melendez hit a run-scoring triple in the fifth and scored on Freddy Fermin's bunt down the first-base line for a 3-0 lead.

Pasquantino had an RBI single off Steven Matz, who turned 32 Monday, in the eighth, and Witt and Massey homered in the ninth against Drew VerHagen.

Witt snapped an 0-for-12 skid with the home run. He became the second Royal to hit 30 career homers before turning age 23.

CF Lars Nootbar left after Pratto doubled leading off the third inning, appearing to pull up near the wall. Nootbar has slammed into the wall catching a Massey drive in the second. The Cardinals said Nootbar had back spasms.

Royals: RHP Brad Keller (right shoulder impingement syndrome) is progressing well after throwing a recent bullpen.

Cardinals: OF Dylan Carlson (left ankle sprain) has been taking swings from the right side. On Monday, he took swings left-handed. Once he is comfortable, he will have short rehab stint in the minors.

RHP Zack Greinke (1-5, 4.55) starts Tuesday for the Royals and RHP Miles Mikolas (3-1, 4.23) for the Cardinals. Grienke is 13-7 with a 3.48 ERA against St. Louis. Mikolas pitched a four-hit shutout in his only game against the Royals on May 21, 2018.

Jonathan Marchessault also had a goal. Carrier, Marchessault and Karlsson were part of the inaugural 2017-18 Knights season that ended in their Cup Final. CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Ryan Blaney pulled away late to win the rescheduled Coca-Cola 600 on Monday at Charlotte Speedway, giving team owner Roger Penske a sweep of the Memorial Day weekend’s top races in the United States. Josef Newgarden won a record-extending 19th Indianapolis 500 on Sunday for Team Penske. It marked the first time Team Penske has earned a sweep of the two races in the same year. Like Newgarden, Blaney went into the crowd to celebrate with fans. Blaney took the lead from William Byron on a restart and led the final 26 laps to win his first Cup Series race since the 2021 Daytona’s Coke Zero Sugar 400. Blaney’s victory snapped a 59-race drought.
