Bryce Harper shines as Phillies aim for second straight World Series

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bryce Harper has the Philadelphia Phillies on the brink of their second straight trip to the World Series. The National League champions host the Arizona Diamondbacks in Game 1 of the NL Championship Series on Monday. Harper hit three homers with a .462 batting average in a four-game NL Division Series win over Atlanta. Harper has nine postseason home runs in his two playoff appearances with the Phillies. Harper gave his team a scare when he clutched his right elbow late in Game 4. The slugging first baseman said he just stung his funny bone and was ready to play in Game 1. He turns 31 on Monday.

PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks are back in the National League Championship Series for the first time since 2007. Now they know who they're going to face. The Philadelphia Phillies are back in the NLCS for a second straight year after beating the Braves in four games of the best-of-five series. The D-backs know they'll face a hostile environment at Philly's Citizens Bank Ballpark. They feel prepared after facing tough road games in Milwaukee and Los Angeles. The first game of the NLCS is on Monday in Philadelphia.

Armed robbery at St. Louis Cardinals complex in Dominican Republic leaves players, staff 'shaken'

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — Authorities are seeking at least five people in an armed robbery of the St. Louis Cardinals complex in the Dominican Republic on Friday. Dominican Republic police spokesman Diego Pesqueira told The Associated Press that the suspects bound and gagged a security guard and stole watches, rings, necklaces and other items from athletes and personnel. Pesqueira said the suspects used the guard's shoelaces to tie his wrists and ankles together. No one was injured, and no shots were fired, he said. A statement from the St. Louis Cardinals said baseball equipment was also stolen. Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak says players and staff at the complex were shaken.

Lexi Thompson falls short in her bid to make PGA Tour cut in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Lexi Thompson looked to be on the verge of becoming the first woman in 78 years to make the cut on the PGA Tour. Two late bogeys stopped her. She missed a 6-foot birdie chance at the end and the 28-year-old American shot 69 in the Shriners Children's Open. She wound up missing the cut by three shots. Cameron Champ and Lanto Griffin shared the lead going into a weekend that will not include Thompson. Her 69 missed by one shot the record by a female on the PGA Tour. Michelle Wie twice shot 68 in the Sony Open.

Russian athletes won't be barred from the Paris Olympics despite their country's suspension

MUMBAI, India (AP) — The IOC says Russian athletes can be directly invited to next year's Paris Games despite the suspension of their country's Olympic committee. International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach commented on the issue a day after the Russian Olympic Committee was suspended for violating the territorial integrity of its Ukrainian counterpart by unilaterally adding sports councils in four occupied regions as members. Isolating Russian Olympic officials won't affect the process of evaluating individuals to compete in Paris as neutral athletes. Bach says "these will be direct invitations which we will manage."

Hornets' Miles Bridges turns himself in after arrest warrant issued over protection order

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Charlotte Hornets forward Miles Bridges has turned himself in after a warrant was issued for an alleged protection order violation stemming from a domestic violence case last year. Bridges turned himself in Friday morning in Lincoln County, a suburb of Charlotte. He was accompanied by his attorney. Bridges appeared before a district court judge and was released on $1,000 bond. The warrant had originally been issued on Jan. 2, but had not previously been served. Messages left with Bridges' attorney were not immediately returned. According to court documents made available on Friday, Bridges "unlawfully and willfully did knowingly violate valid protective order" and "continually contacted the victim via social media and telecommunication device."

Deep in the heart of Texas, Astros and Rangers set for Lone Star showdown for spot in World Series

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Everything is certainly bigger deep in the heart of Texas this baseball postseason. There is a Lone Star State showdown for a spot in the World Series. The defending world champion Houston Astros are in their seventh consecutive American League Championship Series. This time, they play the up-and-coming Texas Rangers. It will be the first time they have met in the playoffs. Game 1 is Sunday night in Houston, where the benches cleared the last time they played there in late July. The AL West rivals both won 90 games during the regular season, but Houston was 9-4 against the Rangers.

Iowa State's Jack Trice Stadium remains only major college football stadium named for a Black man

George Trice is thankful that the tragic story of his cousin, Jack Trice, still is being told a century after he died from injuries sustained on a football field. Trice was trampled during a game at Minnesota on October 6, 1923. He died two days later upon his return to Ames, Iowa. After years of pressure from students, the school named its stadium for him in 1997, making it the first major college stadium to be named for a Black person. All these years later, Jack Trice Stadium remains the only major college football stadium named for a Black person.

Bjugstad and Schmaltz score in shootout as Coyotes beat Devils 4-3

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Nick Bjugstad and Nick Schmaltz scored in the shootout, and the Arizona Coyotes recovered after giving up a two-goal lead and rallied to beat the New Jersey Devils 4-3. Schmaltz also had a goal and an assist in regulation, and Matt Dumba and Sean Durzi also scored for the Coyotes in their regular season opener. Rookie forward Logan Cooley had two assists in his NHL debut and Karel Vejmelka made 33 saves. Jesper Bratt had two goals and an assist, Dougie Hamilton had a goal and an assist, and Jack Hughes had three assists for New Jersey. Akira Schmid finished with 30 saves. Bjugstad and Schmaltz scored on Arizona's two attempts in the shootout, and Vejmelka stopped New Jersey's Timo Meier and Bratt to secure the win.

ATLANTA (AP) — The 2020s are starting to feel like the 1990s for the Atlanta Braves. Another dazzling regular season. Another flop in the postseason. After tying a major league record with 307 homers, the slugging Braves went down meekly to their rival Philadelphia Phillies in the NL Division Series for the second year in a row. Other than a stunning Braves comeback in Game 2, the Phillies totally dominated the best-of-five series. Just like that, a historic season for the Braves is over — with clear reminders of their postseason misery from another era.

The last time the Andale football team lost was the 2018 Class 3A state semifinals. The Indians had gone 12-1 under first-year coach Dylan Schmidt in 2017, and were sitting at 11-0 before a 21-19 loss to Pratt. Entering Friday's game at Cheney, Andale had rattled off a nation-best 57-straight wins.

On paper, it appeared Cheney might be a match. The Cardinals entered Friday night with four-straight shutouts and just 21 points allowed all season. But Andale returned the opening kickoff 91 yards and jumped out to a 22-0 lead late in the first half. Cheney never wavered, forcing overtime and ending Andale's win streak at 57 games with a 36-30 win.

"You talk about 6 a.m. workouts in the summer," said Cheney coach Shelby Wehrman. "They show up, they work their tails off, they invest mentally, they invest physically. The community supports us. That's what Andale has been doing the last 20 years. That's why they're so great. I just can't believe we matched that level."

Cheney won the overtime toss and opted to play defense first. The Andale ground attack had been effective early in the game but struggled in the second half. The Indians moved just eight yards in the first three plays of the extra period. Facing fourth down from the 2-yard line, a halfback pass fell incomplete.

That set the stage for someone to be a hero in front of the standing-room crowd that bled out around the fence surrounding the field. Cheney's first play on offense went to senior standout Jackson Voth. He broke a pair of tackles and stumbled into the end zone from 10 yards out to secure the historical win.

"I knew who was getting the ball," said Cardinal quarterback Josh Burdick. "I knew it was going to No. 1, and I knew he would get it into the end zone."

The second half proved to be a wild one Friday night. The junior Burdick and senior Voth are one of the top quarterback-receiver combinations in Kansas this fall. The duo worked together to drive the field before Burdick connected with junior Jase Robertson on an 8-yard strike midway through the third quarter. A 2-point pass worked and Cheney made it a one-possession game at 22-14.

Andale failed to move the ball on its next possession but a great punt pinned the Cards on their own 6-yard line. Burdick found senior Gavin Maass on the very next play, and he ran 83 yards deep into Indian territory before coughing up the ball. The Indians rolled the dice four plays later and turned the ball back over on downs near midfield.

This time, the Cardinals did not come up short. Burdick eventually hit senior Colter McDaniel on a 29-yard touchdown play. Burdick's 2-point pass to Voth leveled the score at 22 with 11:51 remaining in the game.

Andale answered on its next drive with junior Bo Kaiser hauling in a 29-yard yard touchdown pass from sophomore Sam Harp. The Indians pulled back ahead 30-22 with 10:11 remaining in regulation.

Cheney dropped a pass in the end zone on its next drive, but the Cardinal defense held and forced another Andale punt. Cheney needed to drive 48 yards in under four minutes to keep the dream alive. The Cardinals did just that on a 7-yard pass from Burdick to Voth. Burdick's 2-point pass to Maass also worked to again tie the score at 30-30 with just 1:53 left on the clock.

Still plenty of time remained for some dramatics. Out of timeouts, Andale fumbled on one play and ran out of bounds on another. Cheney used a timeout and got the ball back with 28 seconds left and a timeout in the pocket. Burdick was driving toward a potential win before throwing an interception in the final seconds of regulation.

Burdick also closed out the first half with a pivotal drive. Trailing 22-0, he founds Maass in the end zone from 13 yards out with just 13 seconds left in the second quarter to put the Cardinals on the board at 22-6 heading into the intermission. After a cool start in the second half, Burdick completed 12-straight passes at one point, finishing a huge night with 351 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception on 29-of-42 passing.

"My receivers and my O-line did such a great job," Burdick said. "I did not get hit very often. My receivers found open spots and we were able to pick them apart."

Voth caught 11 passes for 97 yards, and Maass finished with 111 yards on his five receptions. McDaniel spoke to both teams before a joint prayer at the conclusion of the game. He caught 10 passes for 143 yards.

"Our faith is first," he said. "We believe a team that puts God first, the doors will be open that no one can shut. We stay humble and trust in Him. We just do our job every single play, 100 percent, and leave the rest up to Him."

Andale needed just 14 seconds to end Cheney's big shutout streak when senior Gage Prosser returned the opening kick 91 yards for a touchdown. After a defensive stop, the Indians drove the field on their first drive with Harp punching it in from a yard out for a quick 14-0 lead just nine minutes into the game. Andale convered a pair of fourth downs and a third-and-long to take its 22-0 lead late in the second quarter. Senior Karson Butts went 34 yards on a Harp pass to cap that drive.

The Indians managed just 138 rushing yards on 49 carries. Harp threw for 123 yards on 5-of-10 passing with two touchdowns and an interception. He also netted 44 yards on 19 carries. Senior Owen Eck rushed for 58 yards on his 15 carries, mostly in the second half.

Cheney moves to 7-0 overall and claims the Class 3A, District 7 championship. Andale falls to 6-1 overall.

The Indians had gone 12-1 under first-year coach Dylan Schmidt in 2017, and were sitting at 11-0 before a 21-19 loss to Pratt. Entering Friday's game at Cheney, Andale had rattled off a nation-best 57-straight wins.On paper, it appeared Cheney might be a match. The Cardinals entered Friday night with four-straight shutouts and just 21 points allowed all season. But Andale returned the opening kickoff 91 yards and jumped out to a 22-0 lead late in the first half. Cheney never wavered, forcing overtime and ending Andale's win streak at 57 games with a 36-30 win."You talk about 6 a.m. workouts in the summer," said Cheney coach Shelby Wehrman. "They show up, they work their tails off, they invest mentally, they invest physically. The community supports us. That's what Andale has been doing the last 20 years. That's why they're so great. I just can't believe we matched that level."Cheney won the overtime toss and opted to play defense first. The Andale ground attack had been effective early in the game but struggled in the second half. The Indians moved just eight yards in the first three plays of the extra period. Cheney's first play on offense went to senior standout Jackson Voth. He broke a pair of tackles and stumbled into the end zone from 10 yards out to secure the historical win."I knew who was getting the ball," said Cardinal quarterback Josh Burdick. "I knew it was going to No. 1, and I knew he would get it into the end zone."The second half proved to be a wild one Friday night. The junior Burdick and senior Voth are one of the top quarterback-receiver combinations in Kansas this fall. The duo worked together to drive the field before Burdick connected with junior Jase Robertson on an 8-yard strike midway through the third quarter. A 2-point pass worked and Cheney made it a one-possession game at 22-14.Andale failed to move the ball on its next possession but a great punt pinned the Cards on their own 6-yard line. Burdick found senior Gavin Maass on the very next play, and he ran 83 yards deep into Indian territory before coughing up the ball. The Indians rolled the dice four plays later and turned the ball back over on downs near midfield.This time, the Cardinals did not come up short. Cheney ends Andale's nation-best win streak at 57

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Zion Burgess and Kade Smith each rushed for over 100 yards apiece, as the Hutchinson Salthawks beat the Maize Eagles, 36-17, for its third straight win on Friday night at Gowans Stadium.

Burgess (23 carries, 106 yds, 3 TD) and Smith (11 carries, 103 yds, 2 TD) helped lead the Hutchinson (5-2, 5-1 AVCTL-I) ground attack that rushed for 328 yards on 54 carries (6.1 yds/carry). The Salthawks as a team ran 63 plays for 392 total yards of offense (6.2 yds/play).

Maize (2-5, 1-4) got the scoring started in the first quarter, working into the strong wind out of the north. The Eagles went on an 18-play, 80-yard scoring drive that was capped on a one-yard rushing score from quarterback Drew Kemp with 5:52 left in the first.

After the Salthawks and Eagles traded punts on the next couple of drives, Hutchinson went on an eight-play 69-yard drive that was capped on a two-yard Smith touchdown run to tie the game at seven with 11:02 left in the first half.

The ensuing Maize drive only lasted three plays, as Hutchinson defensive back Terrell King intercepted a Maize pass in front of the Eagles' sideline. Two plays later the Salthawks scored, as Smith found the end zone from 36 yards out to put Hutchinson in front for the first time, 14-7 with 9:41 left in the half.

Maize drove the ball 12 plays in nearly four minutes that resulted in a 36-yard Mason Teague field goal to pull the Eagles within 14-10.

The Salthawks then marched the ball right down the field with an eight-play 80-yard drive that saw Burgess find the end zone from six yards out to put Hutch in front 21-10 with just over three minutes left in the half.

Maize responded in a hurry, as Kemp found Alan Hanna for a five-yard touchdown pass to pull the Eagles within 21-17 with 47 seconds left in the half.

Neither team found points in the third quarter, as Hutchinson held on to a four-point lead entering the final frame.

The drive that really sealed the deal for the Salthawks started with 37 seconds left in the third quarter. Hutchinson drove the ball 59 yards on 14 plays that took nearly eight minutes of game clock off. Burgess scored from three yards out to give the Salthawks an 11-point lead with 3:48 to play.

Burgess then scored on a one-yard run with two seconds left in regulation to put the icing on the cake.

Kemp finished 21-for-33 passing for 209 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while Robert Hunter finished 5-for-9 for 64 yards for the Salthawks.

King led the Salthawk defense with nine tackles, while Jax Heneha had eight.

Hutchinson will travel to Andover on Friday, Oct. 20 to close out the regular season, while Maize will finish the regular season at Haysville-Campus.

🏈 Burgess' three rushing scores lead Hutch High to third straight win

HESSTON, Kan. — The <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100088247426521">Mid-America Basketball Association</a>&nbsp;(MABA) has a new team.

The <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61550274668844">Central Kansas Twisters</a> of Hesston will join the professional basketball league that features teams in Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, New Mexico, Colorado, Texas and Missouri.

The Twisters are owned by Josh Lawton of Emporia and will be coached by Terry Stucky of Pretty Prairie. Stucky is familiar with the league, he coached the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063591338657">Wichita Wizards</a> for two seasons.

Stucky led the Wizards to consecutive championship game appearances.

The Wizards announced the hiring of Wichita native Johnny Murdock this offseason.

Fifteen central Kansas athletes will make the Twisters roster.

Tryouts are Oct. 14 at Haven Middle School from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Nov. 18 at Hesston College from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Early registration is $25. That fee is $40 the day of tryouts.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State was picked sixth in the Big 12 coaches preseason poll, as the conference office continued to release their preseason awards ahead of its annual media day on October 18. 

The Wildcats received 106 points in the poll, seven points behind fifth-place TCU (113) and 11 points ahead of seventh-place Iowa State (95). It is the highest placing for K-State since being picked second in the 2018-19 preseason poll, which the team won the regular-season title.

Reigning Big 12 champion Kansas was tabbed the favorite, earning 168 points and 12 of the 14 first-place votes. Newcomer Houston got the other 2 first place votes along with 153 points to place second followed by third-place Texas (143) and fourth-place Baylor (137).

After seventh-place Iowa State, the rest of the poll included Texas Tech (80), West Virginia (70), Oklahoma State (57), Cincinnati (55), Oklahoma (54), BYU (29) and UCF (14).

Last season, the Wildcats were picked for last place before winning 11 Big 12 games and tying for third place en route to winning 26 games and advancing to the Elite Eight for the 13th time in school history.

On October 12, the league office released its preseason team with junior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/arthur-kaluma/11226">Arthur Kaluma</a>&nbsp;and fifth-year senior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/tylor-perry/11222">Tylor Perry</a>&nbsp;each receiving Honorable Mention recognition.

🏀 MBB: K-State picked sixth in Big 12 Preseason Coaches' Poll

IRVING, Texas –&nbsp;For the 20th time in the 27-year history of the coaches’ preseason Big 12 poll, Kansas has been selected as the favorite to win the conference as the league announced the Big 12 Men’s Basketball preseason poll Friday.

Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team and a coaches’ preseason poll was not conducted in the Big 12’s first season in 1996-97.

For the 2023-24 poll, the Jayhawks collected 12 of a possible 13 first-place votes and finished with a total of 168 points. Houston received two first-place nods and was second with 153 points. Texas was third with 143 points, while Baylor was fourth 137 points and TCU fifth with 113 points to round out the top five. The remaining outcome went No. 6 Kansas State (106), No. 7 Iowa State (95), No. 8 Texas Tech (80), No. 9 West Virginia (70), No. 10 Oklahoma State (57), No. 11 Cincinnati (55), No. 12. Oklahoma (54), No. 13 BYU (29) and No. 14 UCF (14).

Head coaches and student-athletes from each team will appear at the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tip Off in Kansas City on Wednesday, October 18.

Kansas returns three starters – KJ Adams Jr., Dajuan Harris Jr. and Kevin McCullar Jr. – and eight letterwinners from last season’s 28-8 team which won the Big 12 regular-season title with a 13-5 league mark. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Nick Castellanos became the first player to hit multiple homers in consecutive postseason games, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-1 win in Game 4 of their NL Division Series that knocked the 104-win Atlanta Braves out of the playoffs for the second straight year. The Phillies head next week to the NLCS and will play the Arizona Diamondbacks, making their first trip 2007. Game 1 is Monday in Philadelphia. Trea Turner hit a solo homer in the fifth for a 2-1 lead as the Phillies make another run at the franchise's first World Series title since 2008.

Mahomes throws TD pass, Kelce has big game with Swift watching again as Chiefs beat Broncos 19-8

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw for 306 yards and a touchdown, Harrison Butker kicked four field goals, and the Kansas City Chiefs held off the Denver Broncos 19-8. It was the Chiefs' 16th straight win over their longtime AFC West rivals. Travis Kelce had nine catches for 124 yards for Kansas City with Taylor Swift again cheering him on from an Arrowhead Stadium suite. The Broncos' Russell Wilson was held to 95 yards passing with a touchdown and a pair of interceptions. Denver has not beaten the Chiefs since Sept. 17, 2015, the year Peyton Manning led the Broncos to the Super Bowl.

NEW YORK (AP) — Yehu Orland wore a shirt honoring a close friend who was killed two days earlier defending Israel, and cried a little when his country's national anthem played before a game in Brooklyn. But the coach of Maccabi Ra'anana believes continuing his team's tour against NBA teams while his country is at war was the right decision. The team from the Israeli National League was playing the first of three games during its tour Thursday night against the Nets. There was a police presence outside the arena, with barricades set up in the plaza.

Taylor Swift returns to Arrowhead Stadium to see Travis Kelce and the Chiefs face the Broncos

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pop superstar Taylor Swift was back at Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday night to watch Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Denver Broncos. Her return came one day after Swift walked the red carpet in Los Angeles for the premiere of her concert movie at The Grove. Swift and Kelce have been in a budding relationship the past few weeks, ever since the All-Pro tight end invited her to a game when he failed to meet her during her Eras Tour. Thursday night's game was the third that Swift has attended in four weeks.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers were left wondering why they can't win in October after they were swept out of the NL Division Series. They'll spend all winter searching for answers while reliving their quick exit for the second straight season. Three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw has a major decision to make on whether he returns for a 17th season or retires. He dealt with a lingering shoulder injury over the final months of the season and got lit up by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NLDS opener. The Dodgers' rotation could be bolstered next year by the return of Walker Buehler.

Colorado coach Deion Sanders calls late game times 'stupidest thing ever invented in life'

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — The Colorado Buffaloes will play another late game when they host Stanford on Friday night at sold-out Folsom Field. The game won't start until at least 8 p.m. Mountain and doesn't figure to finish until at least 11:30 p.m. Coach Deion Sanders isn't a big fan of the late kickoffs, calling it the stupidest thing ever invented.The only other time Colorado has played on a Friday the 13th was in November 2015, when the Buffs lost 27-24 to Southern California.

IOC suspends Russian Olympic Committee for incorporating Ukrainian sports regions

GENEVA (AP) — The Russian Olympic Committee has been suspended by the IOC for breaching the Olympic Charter by incorporating sports bodies in four regions in eastern Ukraine. Russian Olympic officials provoked the dispute last week by accepting the councils in Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia as its members. The suspension does not immediately affect any Russians who are returning to compete in international sporting events as neutral athletes. The Russian Olympic Committee can challenge the IOC decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Lexi Thompson holds her own on PGA Tour in Las Vegas. Beau Hossler sets the pace

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Lexi Thompson is holding her own on the PGA Tour. Thompson is the seventh woman to play the PGA Tour. She was 1-over par through 16 holes in the Shriners Children's Open in Las Vegas when the first round was halted by darkness. Thompson will have a 20-foot par putt when she resumes Friday morning. She's still at least one shot out of the cut line. Thompson says she played decently and had one bad hole. That was a three-putt from 12 feet on the seventh hole for double bogey. Beau Hossler set the pace in the first round with a 9-under 62.

Walt Garrison, who played for Cowboys in college and NFL and was a real rodeo cowboy, dies at 79

DALLAS (AP) — Walt Garrison, who led the Big 8 in rushing for the Oklahoma State Cowboys, won a Super Bowl as a fullback with the Dallas Cowboys and competed as a rodeo cowboy, has died. He was 79. The NFL team said on its website Thursday that Garrison died overnight. It did not give a cause of death. A fifth-round draft choice out of Oklahoma State, the 6-foot, 205-pound Garrison played nine years in Dallas and retired in 1974 as the No. 3 rusher and No. 4 receiver in franchise history. But it was Garrison's rodeo career — which he called his first love — that made him the ultimate cowboy. He also was a longtime spokesman for U.S. Tobacco and its Skoal smokeless brand.

Climate change sees IOC aim to choose hosts of 2030 and 2034 Winter Olympics at same time next July

MUMBAI, India (AP) — The International Olympic Committee has cited concerns over climate change for its wish to pick two Winter Olympics hosts next July. That's putting Salt Lake City quickly into play for the 2034 edition. IOC president Thomas Bach says it aims to pick hosts for both the 2030 and 2034 Winter Games at its meeting on the eve of the Paris Games next year. Sweden, Switzerland and France are working on possible bids for 2030 and Salt Lake City officials have long targeted 2034. That would avoid the United States hosting back-to-back Olympics after the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes knows the Kansas City Chiefs' offense is still trying to put everything together.

It was evident in the way they struggled against Denver on third down Thursday night. The way they kept getting bottled up in short-yardage situations. And in how they failed time after time to turn red-zone trips into touchdowns.

“Luckily for us,” Mahomes said, “our defense is playing great."

So great that Mahomes' lone touchdown pass and Harrison Butker's four field goals were enough to squeak out a 19-8 victory over the Broncos, whose own woeful offense could only manage 197 yards behind a shaky performance from Russell Wilson.

“We have guys that are starters on other teams that are trying to find a way on the football field, and when they get on the field, they're making plays,” Mahomes said of the Kansas City defense. “And they're playing with confidence.”

Mahomes finished with 306 yards passing and an interception, and a big chunk of his production went to Travis Kelce, who had nine catches for 124 yards with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/taylor-swift-travis-kelce-chiefs-broncos-b08b0e53fdd232dc0a468b5fa43b5b04">Taylor Swift again cheering him on</a>&nbsp;from an Arrowhead Stadium suite.

Still, the inability of the Chiefs (5-1) to score touchdowns rather than field goals nearly proved costly.

Butker's first three field goals helped them to a 16-0 lead, but Wilson's touchdown pass to Courtland Sutton — ruled incomplete but overturned upon review — with about six minutes remaining kept the Broncos (1-5) alive. And when Javonte Williams bulled into the end zone for the 2-point conversion, what had been a one-sided shutout was a one-possession game.

The Broncos' league-worst defense couldn't make a stop, though. Mahomes converted third-and-2 with a 28-yard pass to Rashee Rice, and that put Butker in position for a 52-yard field goal with 1:55 left that put the game away.

“Our defense was incredible tonight, as it has been,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “But we have to take care of business in the red zone. We had a lot of yards, positive yards, but you can't stall down there."

The Broncos have not beaten the Chiefs since Sept. 17, 2015, the year Peyton Manning led Denver to the Super Bowl. That was six head and interim coaches ago, and nothing changed with Sean Payton leading them Thursday night. In a league built for parity, their losing streak is the fourth-longest for any team against another in NFL history.

“I'm disappointed but I'm not discouraged,” Payton said. “Offensively we struggled throwing the ball. Our third-down numbers were poor. The turnovers, against a team like this, it's going to be tough to win the game, and yet we were still in it going into the fourth quarter. Sometimes you don't know how a game is going to unfold.”

As bad as the Broncos' defense has been this season, it was Wilson and their offense that kept dragging them down. He had 37 yards passing in the first half, and the only drive Wilson led past midfield ended on fourth down.

The Chiefs weren't doing a whole lot better.

Their first three forays into the red zone netted three points, thanks to an interception by Justin Simmons and a failed tush push out of a field-goal lineup on fourth down. Mahomes, who has struggled by his standards all season, only found his rhythm once in the first half, when he ended a 62-yard drive with a short touchdown pass to Kadarius Toney.

Butker made it 13-0 at the break when he drilled a 60-yard field goal as time expired.

The Chiefs' red-zone woes continued in the second half. They began by swiftly marching downfield and setting up first-and-goal at the Denver 8, but that soon turned into fourth-and-goal at the 7-yard line and Butker had to kick another field goal.

That was all Kansas City could muster until his clinching kick in the final minutes.

Thanks to the defense, that was all the Chiefs needed.

“I thought we did a lot of good things, just obviously red zone and some third downs we didn't execute at a high enough level,” Mahomes said. “I still think there were a lot of good things we can take from it.”

Swift watched Kelce and the Chiefs for the third time Thursday night. The two began a relationship a few weeks ago, when he invited Swift to a Chiefs game after failing to meet her during her Eras Tour. Swift flew in from Los Angeles, where she walked the red carpet on Wednesday night for the premiere of her concert film.

Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones had a sack in his eighth straight regular-season game, which trails only his own 11-game streak in 2018 for the longest in franchise history. With at least one in his first five this season, Jones broke the club record to start the season held by Hall of Famer Derrick Thomas.

Broncos: TE Greg Dulcich, who had just come off injured reserve, left in the fourth quarter with a hamstring injury. It's the same injury that landed Dulcich on IR after hurting it in Week 1 against the Raiders.

Chiefs: S Justin Reid, who had an interception earlier in the game, briefly left in the second half. WR Justin Watson left in the fourth quarter with an elbow injury sustained while trying to make a diving catch.

Chiefs: Host the Los Angeles Chargers the same day.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Junior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/arthur-kaluma/11226">Arthur Kaluma</a>&nbsp;and fifth-year senior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/tylor-perry/11222">Tylor Perry</a>&nbsp;were each chosen as Honorable Mention selections to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team by the coaches, as the conference office released their preseason awards ahead of its annual media day on October 18.&nbsp;

Kaluma and Perry are the first Wildcats named to the Preseason All-Big 12 since&nbsp;Barry Brown Jr.&nbsp;and&nbsp;Dean Wade&nbsp;in 2018-19.

The Preseason All-Big 12 included Kansas'&nbsp;Hunter Dickinson&nbsp;and&nbsp;Dajuan Harris Jr., Houston's&nbsp;L.J. Cryer, TCU's&nbsp;Emanuel Miller&nbsp;and Texas'&nbsp;Max Abmas. The Wildcat duo was among those named honorable mention, along with Baylor's&nbsp;Jalen Bridges,&nbsp;RayJ Dennis&nbsp;and&nbsp;Ja'Kobe Walter, Houston's&nbsp;Jamal Shead, Kansas'&nbsp;Kevin McCullar Jr., Texas'&nbsp;Dylan Disu,&nbsp;Tyrese Hunter&nbsp;and&nbsp;Dillon Mitchell&nbsp;and West Virginia's&nbsp;Jesse Edwards.

Dickinson was named both the Preseason Player and Newcomer of the Year, while Walter was given the nod as the Preseason Freshman of the Year.A 6-foot-7, 225-pound forward, Kaluma transferred to K-State after an impressive 2-year stint (2021-23) at Creighton, where he helped the Bluejays to 47 wins, including 26 in BIG EAST play, a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances (2022, 2023) and the school's first trip to the Elite Eight in 2022-23.&nbsp; 

Kaluma averaged double-figure scoring both seasons at Creighton, totaling 758 points (11.1 ppg.) on 43.3 percent shooting (270-of-624), including 29.1 percent (68-of-234) from 3-point range, and 71.4 percent (150-of-210) from the free throw line in 68 games with 67 starts. As a sophomore, he averaged 11.8 points on 42.3 percent (146-of-345) shooting to go with 6.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists in starting all 37 games for the Bluejays.
