MAIZE, Kan. — The Hutch High baseball team will play for a regional title this evening, following a 3-2 win over Hays High on Tuesday afternoon at Maize South.&nbsp; The Salthawks scored two in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead.

Hays scored one in the top of the sixth to tie the game.&nbsp; The Salthawks took advantage of two Indian errors in the sixth to plate the go-ahead and decisive run.&nbsp; Hutchinson will face either Maize South or Salina Central in the regional championship game around 6:30 p.m.&nbsp;

A complete recap of both games will be available after the second game is complete.&nbsp;

The game will be streamed with audio only on Hutch Post.&nbsp;

But first he's likely to enter a not-guilty plea as a formality during his arraignment Tuesday in federal court in Los Angeles. Authorities say there was no evidence that Ohtani was involved in or aware of Mizuhara’s gambling.

PARIS (AP) — Diego Maradona’s heirs want to stop the auction of a trophy he was awarded after the 1986 World Cup won by Argentina. It had been missing for decades and recently resurfaced. Their lawyer told The Associated Press he will launch an urgent request to have the Golden Ball withdrawn from the sale next month in Paris. He told the AP he will also request a judicial sequestration of the trophy and file a complaint for theft and concealed theft. Maradona died in 2020 at age 60. He captained Argentina in its 3-2 win over West Germany in the 1986 final in Mexico City. Maradona’s heirs say the trophy was stolen and claim the current owner cannot be entitled to sell it.

Kirby (4-3) had been bothered by a sore knee, but was terrific. He pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the first inning after hitting a pair of batters. He gave up Bobby Witt Jr.’s first inning single, then didn’t allow another hit until Dairon Blanco reached on an infield single in the fifth.

Kirby struck out six, walked none. It was the third time this season he pitched at least six innings and didn’t allow a run.

Raley's second homer of the season traveled an estimated at 432 feet and came after Cal Raleigh doubled on the first pitch of the second inning from Kansas City starter Brady Singer. Raley also&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/lindseywasson/status/1790214531387641891">appeared to break</a>&nbsp;– or have come unscrewed — the celebratory trident used by the Mariners to celebrate home runs.

Raleigh and Raley added an RBI singles an inning later. Raleigh's was a 410-foot shot that tipped off Blanco’s glove as he jumped at the fence. Julio Rodríguez scored, but Jorge Polanco had to wait near first base and could only advance 90 feet, leaving Raleigh with possibly the longest single of his career.

Ty France added a two-run homer in the eighth inning, his third of the season.

Kansas City's Michael Massey had a two-out, two-run double in the eighth, but closer Andrés Muñoz recorded the final four outs for his sixth save.

Singer (3-2) gave up a season-high nine hits and allowed more than two earned runs for only the second time this season – both losses. Singer needed 108 pitches to get through five innings and struck out six.

Royals: RHP Carlos Hernandez (shoulder) pitched 1 1/3 innings on Sunday as part of his rehab assignment at Triple-A Omaha, the first time he pitched more than one inning.

Mariners: Polanco left the game before the start of the sixth inning due to hamstring tightness in his right leg. ... SS J.P. Crawford (oblique) is expected to start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday.

The Bullpups edged out Andale by seven strokes, to claim the win with a total of 340 strokes. Buhler finished in seventh place with a score of 390.

McPherson junior Blaise Hoover was in first a majority of the day, but finished with a second place finish with a 7-over par 79 round. Freshman Hudson Krehbiel finished with a round of 82, good enough for fifth place.

Junior Drew DeMeyer was the top Buhler finisher, as he carded a 92, which earned him a trip to the state tournament and a 13th place finish.

The class 4A state tournament will take place Monday, May 20 and Tuesday, May 21 at Turkey Creek Golf Course in McPherson.

⛳ Trinity Catholic wins 2A regional in Syracuse

Hutchinson Community College Athletic Director Josh Gooch announced on Monday the hiring of Kyle Fisher to be the next head coach of the Blue Dragon men's basketball program, pending board approval.

Fisher will become the 16th head coach in the history of the NJCAA's all-time winningest men's basketball program. He will be officially introduced at a news conference at noon on Wednesday, May 22, in the Hutchinson's Sports Arena's Multi-Purpose Room.

"Myself, my wife and our girls are beyond excited about getting to take over such a prestigious program like Hutchinson," Fisher said. "I have always admired the program and I look forward to getting to work to keep the Blue Dragons at the top of the junior college world."

Fisher is a veteran of the Jayhawk Conference coaching wars, first as an assistant at Coffeyville Community College and the last five seasons as the head men's basketball coach at Butler Community College.

"We are excited to welcome Coach Kyle Fisher as the Blue Dragons' next head basketball coach," Gooch said. "Coach Fisher's success in the NJCAA and KJCCC as an assistant coach and then as a head coach make him a great fit to lead the Blue Dragons.

"I look forward to welcoming his wife, Kathryn, and daughters, Grace and Rose, to the Hutchinson community and Blue Dragon Nation."

Over his five seasons as head coach at Butler, Fisher's teams posted an impressive 113-42 overall record.

Fisher's 2022-23 team went 26-9 and finished fourth in the KJCCC, but had a late-season surge that carried the Grizzlies to a Region 6 Tournament title and all the way to the NJCAA National Tournament Quarterfinals. His first team in 2019-20 finished 25-8 with a second-place finish in the KJCCC and a Region 6 Tournament runner-up finish.

Except for the Covid-affected season in 2020-21, Fisher's teams never won less than 23 games at Butler.

"The hard-nosed mentality and the grit my players have shown will always be a staple of my program," Fisher said. "We are going to recruit really good players who are good people. They are going to play hard and play for each other."

Before accepting the head coaching position at Butler, Fisher worked under Hall of Fame coach Jay Herkelman at Coffeyville.

Over his seven seasons with the Red Ravens, Fisher's time in Coffeyville helped produce a record of 179-55 and four trips to the national tournament - including three-straight national tournament appearances, along with a national semifinal finish in the 2018-19 season. Fisher was promoted to associate head coach with the Red Ravens before the 2017-18 season.

"With the experience and the success I have had in this league, that will put us in a good position to compete at a high level," Fisher said. "The Jayhawk Conference is unlike any other league in the country. I look forward to the challenge of representing our program and the community the right way."

Prior to Coffeyville, Fisher served as the top assistant at Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher, Arizona, for two seasons. Holthus, the Voice of the Kansas City Chiefs, is the longest tenured and most decorated play-by-play "Voice" in franchise history, on the call for Chiefs victories in Super Bowl LIV, Super Bowl LVII and Super Bowl LVIII. 

Holthus is a member of the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, Kansas State University Athletics Hall of Fame, and is a five-time Emmy award winner. 

A native of Smith Center, Kansas, and graduate of Kansas State University, Holthus was selected by the Kansas Society of Washington, D.C. board for being an exemplary ambassador for the state. Holthus began his legendary broadcasting career calling games for the Pratt High (Kan.) Greenbacks, before serving as Kansas State's "Voice of the Wildcats" for 13 years and earning six-time Kansas Sportscaster of the Year honors. In 1994, Holthus made his debut in the Kansas City Chiefs broadcast booth where he has exemplified the spirit of Chiefs Kingdom ever since. 

Holthus and his wife Tami, who is originally from McPherson, Kansas, have a son and daughter and two granddaughters.

The NFL will release the entire 2024 season schedule on Wednesday night on the NFL Network.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-ravens-score-afc-championship-2d7d4c43fe8fc614b27bf5fc7f4e94d1">Chiefs beat the Ravens 17-10</a>&nbsp;in the AFC championship game in January and went on to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-2024-score-chiefs-49ers-49b5dca51c05ab0f259cef0d7da76c2d">defeat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime</a>&nbsp;in the Super Bowl.

The Chiefs-Ravens opener at Arrowhead Stadium will be a Thursday night game on NBC. The Chiefs are favored by three points, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://sports.ia.betmgm.com/en/sports/football-11/betting/usa-9/nfl-35">BetMGM Sportsbook.</a>

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs will be going for an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl title and fourth in six years this season. Mahomes is 4-1 in his career against Lamar Jackson and the Ravens.

Kansas City will begin the season at home for the second straight year and is 9-2 in openers under Andy Reid. The Chiefs lost 21-20 to Detroit in their 2023 opener.

Haliburton also had six rebounds, five assists and four 3-pointers as the Pacers led by 43 points during a start-to-finish romp. They fell just short of their most lopsided playoff victory, when they beat Cleveland by 34 points in April 2018. Game 5 of the series will be played Tuesday at Madison Square Garden.

BOSTON (AP) — Aleksander Barkov slipped through three Bruins defenders to score the go-ahead goal and Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 16 shots to give the Florida Panthers a 3-2 victory over Boston and a 3-1 lead in their Eastern Conference semifinal series. One year after Florida knocked out the record-setting Bruins in the first round on its way to the Stanley Cup Final, the Panthers won their third straight to send Boston to the brink of elimination. Sam Bennett and Anton Lundell also scored for the Panthers. Florida scored three times in a row to rally from a two-goal deficit. The Panthers can advance to the Eastern Conference finals with a victory in Game 5 at home on Tuesday night.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Brock Boeser had two goals and an assist, Elias Lindholm also scored twice, and the Vancouver Canucks held on to beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 to take a 2-1 lead in their Western Conference playoff series. CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Rory McIlroy won the Wells Fargo Championship for a record fourth time Sunday, overcoming a two-stroke deficit to beat Xander Schauffele by five strokes. No other player has won the event more than twice. McIlroy closed with a 6-under 65, playing the final 11 holes in 6 under even with a double bogey on the 18th hole. He finished at 17-under 267 after four straight rounds in the 60s and won his second straight PGA Tour event after teaming with Shane Lowry to take the Zurich Classic two weeks ago in New Orleans. Schauffele shot 71. McIlroy also won the event in 2010, ‘15 and ’21.

CLIFTON, N.J. (AP) — Rose Zhang won the Cognizant Founders Cup on Sunday to end Nelly Korda’s record-tying LPGA Tour winning streak, rallying to beat Madelene Sagstrom by two strokes. Zhang birdied four of the final five holes to overcome a three-shot deficit in a thrilling final-round duel with Sagstrom after the two broke away from the field Saturday. Zhang shot a 6-under 66, birdieing Nos. 14, 15, 17 and 18 at Upper Montclair Country Club. Sagstrom bogeyed the 16th in a 69. Korda had a second straight 73 and tied for seventh at 7 under. Zhang, a two-time NCAA champion at Stanford, who won last year at nearby Liberty National in her pro debut. She finished at 24 under 264 total.

DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) — Brad Keselowski moved to the front when Chris Buescher and Tyler Reddick hit each other with nine laps left and held on to win the Goodyear 400 at Darlington Raceway on Sunday. It was Keselowski's first victory since 2021 and his first triumph since rejoining magnate Jack Roush as a co-owner at Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing. It was Keselowski's 36th career win and his second at Darlington. He snapped a 110-race winless drought since taking the checkered flag at Talladega in April 2021. Ty Gibbs finished second and Josh Berry third.

Andrew Cossetti&nbsp;brought home&nbsp;Alerick Soularie&nbsp;from third on a sacrifice fly to center in the bottom of the first inning. Grant Witherspoon tied the game for Arkansas with a no-doubt solo home run to right field against Wind Surge starter&nbsp;Jarret Whorff&nbsp;a half inning later.

Wichita responded with a pair of run-scoring doubles that gave the Wind Surge a 4-1 lead in the bottom half of the second.&nbsp;Jorel Ortega&nbsp;pulled the first to left field to allow&nbsp;Aaron Sabato&nbsp;to cross home plate. Soularie pushed the second one to the right center wall, letting&nbsp;Jake Rucker&nbsp;and Ortega tack on two more.

Five more runs followed for Wichita, who batted around two innings later in the last of the fourth. Rucker grounded into a fielder’s choice where&nbsp;Kyler Fedko&nbsp;trotted in after a Travelers infield throwing error. Soularie swiped home after committing to a double steal after&nbsp;Tanner Schobel&nbsp;took second.&nbsp;Kala’i Rosario&nbsp;drew a bases-loaded walk, and then Rucker singled in two more runs in Cossetti and&nbsp;Noah Cardenas.

⚾️ Wichita Wind Surge sweeps series with Travelers

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Seth Lugo racked up a career-high 12 strikeouts and allowed one run over eight strong innings, and Hunter Renfroe had a two-run single against his former team in the Kansas City Royals' 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.

Freddie Fermin and Michael Massey also had RBIs during the Royals' four-run fourth inning, and Lugo (6-1) made it stand up as Kansas City took three of four from the Angels.

Lugo allowed five hits while continuing his outstanding start to his first season with the Royals, winning for the AL-best sixth time in eight starts and lowering his ERA to an AL-best 1.66.

“To strike out 12 and only throw 112 pitches, that’s really remarkable,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “Just the confidence that you have when he’s out there. He just comes out and it feels like he’s in total control all the time.”

Lugo overcame slight early control issues, retired 11 straight at one point, and didn't walk a batter for the first time all season. The longtime Mets right-hander has allowed two earned runs or fewer in eight of his nine starts for Kansas City.

“We were counting on him to be one of the top couple of starters we had,” Quatraro said. “What he’s done so far, I don’t think anybody can bank on that run of starts, but the way he’s done it is really impressive, and he hasn’t wavered. ... I can’t even fathom having nine pitches to choose from, (and) the fact he uses them and they all do something and he can locate all of them.”

Willie Calhoun had an RBI double in the sixth and a solo homer in the ninth for the Halos, who have lost 17 of 23 with a major league-worst 14 players on the injured list.

Los Angeles has lost all six of its series at the Big A this season, failing to win consecutive home games at any point.

Patrick Sandoval (2-6) allowed 11 hits for Los Angeles, but pitched into the seventh inning and only allowed runs during the Royals' fourth-inning rally. Sandoval has lost five of his last seven starts.

“The takeaway from his start is he should be pleased,” Angels manager Ron Washington said. “One inning (was bad), and sometimes that happens to you. Sometimes you can recover, and sometimes not. You’ve got to give their pitching staff credit.”

The Royals got five consecutive hits to open the fourth inning. Renfroe, who batted .242 with 19 homers in 126 games for the Angels last season, drove in Nelson Velasquez and Fermin with his bases-loaded single before Massey drove in Dairon Blanco with a sacrifice bunt.

The Angels couldn't get to Lugo until Mickey Moniak singled in the sixth and Calhoun drove him home.

Calhoun capped his three-hit game with his first homer for the Angels, a solo shot off James McArthur in the ninth. McArthur got two more outs to complete his ninth save.

⚾️ Royals win over Angels Sunday

The Shockers (27-26, 13-11) extended their winning streak to a season-high-tying five games and completed their fourth sweep of the season (Utah Tech, Gonzaga, Rice, Charlotte).

The combination of Charlotte starter Chase Carson and reliever Ryan Degges limited Wichita State to just one run through the first six innings that came on a&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/dayvin-johnson/7596">Dayvin Johnson</a>&nbsp;solo homer in the bottom of the third.

The Shockers trailed 2-1 entering the bottom of the seventh but opened the inning with a walk and a single to put men at first and second with nobody out. That brought up Durnin, who twice squared around to bunt against Charlotte reliever AJ Wilson but took a strike and fouled off another to bring the count to 0-2. 

The freshman followed with a blast to left that cleared the wall for a go-ahead, three-run home run and a 4-2 Wichita State lead.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.&nbsp;— An eight-run deficit proved to be too much for K-State to overcome, as West Virginia claimed a 12-5 victory Sunday afternoon and picked up the series win at Wagener Field at Kendrick Family Ballpark.

K-State (29-21, 13-14 Big 12) posted a four-run sixth that trimmed its deficit to four runs after the Wildcats earlier trailed 9-1, but WVU (31-19, 17-10 Big 12) scored three late runs to put the game away.

"Overall, speaking for our guys, we are disappointed," said head K-State baseball coach&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/coaches/pete-hughes/2461">Pete Hughes</a>. "Our approach was score early to neutralize an emotionally filled atmosphere. We were unable to create offense first and they did."&nbsp;&nbsp;

"I was proud of our fight mid-game, but we needed to string together a couple of big innings. They continued to take advantage of opportunities via the homerun and proved to be too much," Hughes said.

The Mountaineers pounded out 15 hits and scored eight runs with two outs, led by three-hit days from Logan Suave and Sam White, while the 2023 Big 12 Player of the Year JJ Wetherholt drove in a game-high four runs.

🎾 Buhler claims first state title in program history

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Jo Adell hit a three-run homer and Kevin Pillar had three hits and three RBIs in the Los Angeles Angels' 9-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night.

Logan O’Hoppe had a two-run double during a four-run seventh for the Angels, who won for only the sixth time in 22 games.

“We put some good at-bats together in some situations where we certainly needed it,” Angels manager Ron Washington said. “We just want to learn how to sustain it, and if they can sustain it, we can become a very consistent team because we've got some kids out there that are growing.”

Tyler Anderson (3-4) yielded three runs and seven hits over 6 2/3 effective innings for the Halos, ending his five-start winless skid. The left-hander retired 12 straight at one point.

“It's good (to get a victory), but it's a team game, and we're doing a good job staying in a lot of these games,” Anderson said.

Salvador Pérez had an early RBI double for the Royals, whose three-game winning streak ended.

Cole Ragans (2-3) allowed eight hits and seven runs over 6 1/3 innings for Kansas City, recording a season-low three strikeouts in his first loss in four starts.

“I think his delivery looked a little bit out of whack, and I think it affected his command,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. “His stuff was good. He got into a groove there after the third and kept us in the game. We felt good that he had plenty of pitches (left), but he just didn't execute as well as he would have liked there in the seventh.”

Bobby Witt Jr. singled, stole second and scored on Pérez’s double down the left field line in the first, but Pillar led off the Angels' second with a triple when MJ Melendez misplayed his drive to left.

Adell connected two batters later with a 419-foot shot. The long-hyped prospect could be finding a groove in the majors after a half-decade of false starts, hitting three homers in his last four games and seven this season.

“It all goes back to my decisions in the box and what I swing at,” Adell said.

Cole Tucker, Taylor Ward and Pillar then strung together consecutive singles in the third, and Ward scored on a wild pitch to put the Angels up 5-1.

“Obviously not the best,” Ragans said of his start. “Made some mistakes. Felt like a few times I made some good pitches (and) they hit them hard. A few times, left some pitches over the plate. Fell behind quite a bit, I felt like. Yeah, just not the best.”

After Witt singled home Maikel Garcia in the sixth, the Royals chased Anderson with Kyle Isbel's soft RBI single in the seventh. Angels reliever Adam Cimber escaped a tight jam for the second straight night, allowing no runs for the 15th time in his last 16 appearances.

“Cimber is the man,” Anderson said. “We all love him. If there's nobody on, if there's people on, we just like it when he's in the game.”

Pillar then dropped a bases-loaded, two-out single inside the line in right field in the seventh off reliever Nick Anderson, and O'Hoppe followed with a double to left.

Pillar was designated for assignment by the White Sox last month, and he made his Angels debut May 1, shortly after Mike Trout's knee injury.
