NEW YORK (AP) — A person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press that first baseman Pete Alonso is staying with the New York Mets, agreeing to a $54 million, two-year contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement was subject to a successful physical. Alonso gets a $10 million signing bonus and gets salaries of $20 million this year and $24 million in 2026. He can opt out after the 2025 season to become a free agent again. New York also offered a $71 million, three-year deal with salaries of $27 million in 2025 and $22 million in each of the following two seasons, with the ability to opt out after each of the first two years, the person said.

Trump signs executive order intended to bar transgender athletes from girls' and women's sports

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order designed to prevent transgender athletes from participating in girls' or women's sports. The order gives federal agencies wide latitude to ensure entities that receive federal funding abide by Title IX in alignment with the Trump administration's view, which interprets "sex" as the gender someone was assigned at birth. It is the latest aggressive shift by the Republican president's second administration in how the government views transgender people and their rights. Trump has already ordered the government to define sex as only male or female.

President Donald Trump is ready to take his fight against transgender athletes to the International Olympic Committee. Trump wants the IOC to "change everything having to do with the Olympics and having to do with this absolutely ridiculous subject" ahead of the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles. Trump made the remarks while signing an executive order designed to keep men out of women's sports. The order empowers both the office of the Secretary of State and the Department of Homeland Security to take steps to attempt to prevent international transgender female athletes from competing in the United States.

Lakers land center Mark Williams in trade with Hornets for Knecht and Reddish, AP source says

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Lakers are acquiring center Mark Williams from the Charlotte Hornets in a trade for rookie Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish and two draft picks, a person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday night because the latest trade by the busy Lakers hasn't been finalized. The Hornets are also getting the Lakers' first-round pick in 2031 and a draft pick swap in 2030 in exchange for Williams, one of the NBA's most compelling young centers.

Baseball star Ohtani's ex-interpreter to appear in court for sentencing in betting case

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The former interpreter for baseball star Shohei Ohtani is expected to be sentenced for bank and tax fraud. He stole nearly $17 million from the Japanese athlete's bank account. Ippei Mizuhara is scheduled to appear Thursday in federal court in Santa Ana, California. Mizuhara pleaded guilty last year to bank and tax fraud. He stole the money to cover his growing gambling bets and debts with an illegal bookmaker as well as other expenses. Prosecutors are asking for a sentence of four years and nine months. His lawyer is asking for a sentence of one and a half years.

Deion Sanders says he "couldn't coach pro ball" in a recent episode of his television series

DENVER (AP) — Colorado coach Deion Sanders said in a segment of his new television series that he "couldn't coach pro ball." In his show, "We Got Time Today" that streams on Tubi, Sanders chatted with former Dallas Cowboys teammate and fellow Hall of Famer Troy Aikman about an array of topics. They reminisced about their Super Bowl experience and touched on Sanders' chat with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones concerning the Dallas head coaching vacancy. The team ended up hiring Brian Schottenheimer. Sanders pointed out the differences at practices from their time to now.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scores 50 points as NBA-leading Thunder rout Suns 140-109

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 50 points and the NBA-leading Oklahoma City Thunder routed the Phoenix Suns 140-109 on Wednesday night to improve to 40-9. Gilgeous-Alexander became the ninth player in NBA history to score at least 50 points three times in a seven-game span. He had a career-high 54 against Utah on Jan. 29 and 52 at Golden State a week ago. Phoenix's Kevin Durant sat out with a sprained left ankle. The 36-year-old All-Star forward remains 26 points short of 30,000 for his career. Oklahoma City's fans still got a show. Several times, they serenaded Gilgeous-Alexander with the "M-V-P! It was a winning combination in Fox's debut with the Spurs. Fox scored 24 points and matched his season high with 13 assists and Wembanyama's go-ahead free throw with 2.4 seconds remaining gave the Spurs a 126-125 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. Fox was acquired by San Antonio from Sacramento in a three-team trade Sunday. Fox fit in quickly with his new team.

Wizards trading Valanciunas to the Kings for Cissoko and 2 2nd-round draft picks

The Washington Wizards have agreed to trade center Jonas Valanciunas to the Sacramento Kings for Sidy Cissoko and second-round draft picks in 2028 and 2029. The Wizards announced the trade Wednesday night. Each of the young figure skaters killed in the DC plane crash had a story waiting to be told

The young figure skaters whose lives were cut tragically short when an American Airlines flight collided with an Army helicopter and crashed into the Potomac River on Wednesday night were just beginning their journeys to stardom. Some of them were quickly rising through the ranks of U.S. Figure Skating, while others were still learning the very basics. All of them were coming home from a development camp in Wichita, Kansas, some of them accompanied by their parents and coaches. And all of them had stories that were only just beginning, and just waiting to be told.

Rangers get center J.T. Miller from Canucks in multiplayer deal

The New York Rangers have acquired veteran center J.T. Miller from the Vancouver Canucks in a multiplayer deal. The Rangers sent center Filip Chytil, defenseman Victor Mancini and a conditional draft pick to Vancouver. New York also received defensemen Jackson Dorrington and Erik Brannstrom. The Canucks were expected to trade either Miller or Elias Pettersson after a reported rift between the two stars. Miller was a last-minute scratch before Vancouver's game at Dallas on Friday night, and the teams announced the deal during the game. The 31-year-old Miller was drafted by the Rangers and played for New York for six seasons before being dealt to Tampa Bay in 2018.

Pelicans' Dejounte Murray suffers lower right leg injury and team braces for long absence

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans guard Dejounte Murray left the Pelicans' game against Boston in the first quarter with an injury to his lower right leg. Murray had driven into the lane and took a shot, then went to chase after his miss. But he fell to the court and grabbed at the area near his right foot. When he got up, he hobbled toward the nearby Pelicans bench. The Pelicans said Murray would not return to Friday's game. Afterward, coach Willie Green and Pelicans players made clear they expect to be without Murray for an extended period.

Mercury acquire Satou Sabally from Wings as part of 3-team deal, AP source says

Satou Sabally is heading to the Phoenix Mercury as part of a three-team trade. That's according to a person familiar with the deal who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Friday night because the deal hadn't been announced. The Dallas Wings received Ty Harris and Kiki Herbert Harrigan from the Mercury as well as NaLyssa Smith and the No. 8 overall draft pick from the Indiana Fever. The Fever will acquire Sophie Cunningham and Phoenix's second-round pick. The Mercury also will get Kalani Brown and Sevgi Uzun from the Wings.

Young among those with reactions after not getting selected for NBA All-Star Game

Atlanta guard Trae Young doesn't view not getting picked for the All-Star Game as getting snubbed. He has a new word. "It's getting 'Traed' at this point," he wrote on social media. Young, the NBA's assist leader this season and a three-time All-Star selection, obviously wasn't pleased about not getting picked for the Feb. 16 All-Star event in San Francisco. The league's coaches pick the reserves for the game, their selections getting revealed on Thursday. And a few notables didn't make the cut, including Young and Phoenix's Devin Booker.

Rory McIlroy had four bogeys in a six-hole stretch and salvaged his round of 70 with an eagle on the final hole. He was six behind. Scottie Scheffler saved par from the beach on the 18th hole and shot 70. He was seven back. Straka is coming off a victory in his last start in the California desert.

Tennis Hall of Famer Pam Shriver's trophies are back after being taken in stolen car amid LA fires

International Tennis Hall of Fame member Pam Shriver has her trophies back. Shriver said Friday that she regained the dozen or so pieces of hardware that were in a car stolen from the hotel where she was staying after evacuating from her home during the outbreak of the devastating wildfires in the greater Los Angeles area. Shriver won 21 Grand Slam doubles championships — all but one alongside Martina Navratilova — a gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics and a total of 111 doubles titles. Shriver, now a TV commentator, was inducted into the sport's Hall of Fame in 2002.

Saquon Barkley could be latest in line of free agents who helped deliver Super Bowl titles

The offseason addition of Saquon Barkley helped elevate a sluggish offense for the Philadelphia Eagles and lead the team to a Super Bowl. While building teams through the draft is still the most desirable avenue for success in the NFL, free agent additions have played a major role for several Super Bowl teams since unrestricted free agency came to the NFL in 1993. International Skating Union to honor athletes killed in plane crash when Boston hosts world champs

TALLINN, Estonia (AP) — International Skating Union President Jae Youl Kim has held back tears while announcing they will honor athletes and others killed in the mid-air collision near Washington, D.C., when the world championships are staged in Boston in March. Kim was visibly emotional telling media on Friday at the European championships in Estonia. Skaters, coaches and family members on their way back from a national skating camp in Wichita, Kansas, were among those who died when a passenger jet hit a helicopter on Wednesday. They included two teenage skaters, their mothers and two coaches who were part of the Skating Club of Boston. Kim also praised Dick Button, the two-time Olympic figure skating champion and broadcaster who died on Thursday at 95.

The Canucks were expected to trade either Miller or Elias Pettersson after a reported rift between the two stars. Miller was a last-minute scratch before Vancouver's game at Dallas on Friday night, and the teams announced the deal during the game. NORWOOD, Mass. (AP) — Two young figure skaters, two of their parents and two highly-regarded Russian figure skating coaches were among those killed after an American Airlines flight collided with an Army helicopter and crashed into the frigid waters of the Potomac River. Doug Zeghibe, the chief executive at the Skating Club of Boston, said Thursday that skaters Jinna Han and Spencer Lane were among those killed, along with coaches Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov. U.S. Figure Skating previously confirmed that several skaters, coaches and family members were on the commercial flight after attending a development camp that followed the national championships, which wrapped up Sunday in Wichita, Kansas.

Dick Button, Olympic great and voice of skating, dies at 95

NEW YORK (AP) — Olympic figure skating great and authoritative commentator Dick Button has died at age 95. Button's son, Edward, says he died Thursday and did not provide a cause. Button won two Olympic gold medals and was the most accomplished men's figure skater in history. He also was the voice of his sport and one of its greatest innovators. He promoted skating and its athletes, transforming a niche sport into the showpiece of every Winter Olympics. His impact on his sport began in the 1940s and lasted until his death.

NFL says it will look into allegations by massage therapists about Justin Tucker's behavior

BALTIMORE (AP) — An NFL spokesman says the league will look into allegations that Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker behaved inappropriately toward massage therapists at four spas and wellness centers in the Baltimore area. The Baltimore Banner detailed the accusations in a lengthy report Thursday. The paper said it spoke to six massage therapists who recounted firsthand experiences with Tucker from 2012 to 2016. Several therapists said they ended Tucker's sessions early or refused to work on him again, and management from two spas said they banned him from returning. Tucker posted a statement on social media calling the allegations about him in the Banner story "unequivocally false."

Victor Wembanyama is an All-Star, 1 of 6 1st-time selections

NBA coaches are obviously convinced: Victor Wembanyama is one of the league's very best players. The San Antonio star and reigning rookie of the year is an All-Star for the first time, one of the 14 players announced Thursday night as members of the reserve pool for the Feb. 16 event in San Francisco. Wembanyama becomes only the fourth Spurs player to make the All-Star Game in his first or second season. The others were Alvin Robertson in 1986, David Robinson in both 1990 and 1991, and Tim Duncan in 1998.

Bronny James plays the whole 4th quarter -- with plenty of ups and downs -- in Lakers' blowout win

WASHINGTON (AP) — Bronny James scored a career-high five points while playing the whole fourth quarter in the Los Angeles Lakers' 134-96 win at Washington. He shot only 1 of 6 from the field, but he made a driving layup while being fouled and converted the free throw for a three-point play. James' night also included an air ball from 3-point range, two rebounds, two assists and two fouls. He came up with a steal and made a nice long pass to Dalton Knecht for a dunk. After his lone field goal, James drove to the basket again and lobbed an alley-oop to Christian Koloko for a dunk.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Scottie Scheffler looked every bit like the No. 1 player in the world even if he didn't make a hole-in-one during the exciting start to the AT&amp;T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Scheffler opened with a 67 in his first tournament of the year since puncturing his right hand over Christmas making ravioli. The thrills belonged to Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry. They each made a hole-in-one on different courses and each shot 66. The lead belonged to Russell Henley. He shot 64 at Spyglass Hill on what might be the last day of dry weather. Jordan Spieth shot 70 in his return from wrist surgery.

Max Scherzer agrees to a $15.5 million, 1-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, AP source says

Max Scherzer is joining the Toronto Blue Jays, agreeing to a 15.5 million, one-year contract, according to a person with direct knowledge of the deal. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not been announced and was pending a physical. The 40-year-old Scherzer was limited to nine starts with Texas last year, going 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA. The three-time Cy Young Award winner joins a rotation that is fronted by Kevin Gausman, José Berríos and Chris Bassitt.

MIAMI (AP) — Unusual betting patterns surrounding the play of then-Charlotte Hornets guard Terry Rozier in a game nearly two years ago are now under investigation by federal prosecutors, part of the same probe that led to the lifetime ban of Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter, the NBA confirmed Thursday. The Wall Street Journal first reported the investigation, noting that Rozier — who played for the Hornets on the date in question, and now plays for the Miami Heat — has not been charged with a crime, nor has he been accused of wrongdoing. The NBA said it looked into the matter at the time and did not find that any league rules were broken.

Nashville bids for WNBA franchise with Candace Parker and Peyton Manning among investors

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The chairman of the NHL's Nashville Predators and his wife want to bring the WNBA to Music City and have teamed up with a star-filled investor group including Candace Parker, Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning and entertainers Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. The group led by Bill Haslam, who is a former Tennessee governor, submitted its bid to the WNBA on Thursday for a franchise that would start playing in 2028. The team also would be named the Tennessee Summitt in honor of late University of Tennessee coach women's coach Pat Summitt. Haslam said they see how women's professional sports is emerging worldwide with a "void" in Tennessee.

He also was the voice of his sport and one of its greatest innovators. He promoted skating and its athletes, transforming a niche sport into the showpiece of every Winter Olympics. His impact on his sport began in the 1940s and lasted until his death.</p><p>NFL says it will look into allegations by massage therapists about Justin Tucker's behavior</p><p>BALTIMORE (AP) — An NFL spokesman says the league will look into allegations that Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker behaved inappropriately toward massage therapists at four spas and wellness centers in the Baltimore area. The Baltimore Banner detailed the accusations in a lengthy report Thursday. The paper said it spoke to six massage therapists who recounted firsthand experiences with Tucker from 2012 to 2016. Several therapists said they ended Tucker's sessions early or refused to work on him again, and management from two spas said they banned him from returning.
